5 Ceaning containers Optimum container ceaning requires targeted harmonization with the customized appication. Lecher offers a wide range of rotating nozzes and wi support you in finding the right arrangement. System and arge tank ceaning High impact tank ceaning machines can be used in this appication. These traverse a precisey defined path with gearcontroed soid stream nozzes. This gives them a great range. In smaer containers and systems, the precision jets can remove even persistent dirt. Nozzes for air cooing and humidification The thermodynamic processes of evaporation is normay appied in air cooing and humidification. This requires fine dropets that are injected directy into the air / gas fow by hoow cone or custer nozzes. Producing the suitabe dropet size and even distribution over the intake channe are particuary important here. 5

The narrowest cross section of the nozzes shoud be 6 mm (DIN 14495). Tonguetype nozzes and fu cone nozzes are frequenty used. Dropet separators Dropets can be carried aong in the gas fow during the absorption process. Lecher dropet separators remove dropets from the gas fow in order to prevent downstream measuring devices from being affected. Specia fu cone nozzes are avaiabe for ceaning dropet separators. Gas cooing (Quenching) In gas cooing, a iquid is added via nozzes that, under some circumstances, evaporates competey and thereby absorbs the therma energy of the gas. Compete evaporation requires very fine dropets which can be produced with hoow cone or twinfuid nozzes. 6

7 Absorption (Gas washing) If the waste gas is to undergo absorption, Lecher fu cone, hoow cone, or custer nozzes are used. It is of crucia importance here to create a arge specific reaction surface. The efficiency of the process can be decisivey enhanced by making the right nozze seection and having an optimum nozze arrangement. Materia separation in centrifuges Centrifuges are used to separate materias. Fu cone and fat fan nozzes are used for that in order to spray on water to wash out the materia that is to be removed. 7

This makes them suitabe above a for owviscosity (e.g. water, acohos) to sighty viscous (e.g. oive oi) fuids and, depending on the jet shape, pressure and fow rate, they produce fine to very coarse dropets. Since ony one fuid fow must be handed, singefuid nozzes are comparativey easy to insta and use. The typica pressures are between 0.5 and 20 bar. In most cases, higher differentia pressures than 20 bar are used in singefuid nozzes ony for atomizing viscous products or in ceaning technoogy. Figure 1: Different spray characters Twinfuid nozzes atomize the iquid with the aid of a compressibe medium, in most cases compressed air or steam. They work in the range of very sma to medium fow rates and are preferred for particuary fine misting or the atomization of highviscosity iquids. A distinction is made between twinfuid nozzes with interna mixing and those with externa mixing. The combining of two different fuid fows makes the instaation and operating compexity greater than is the case with comparabe singefuid nozzes. 2 Fow rate, spray pattern/ange, spraying behavior Uness otherwise stated, the fow rate information for our nozzes aways refers to water. The conversion of differing iquid densities is expained in our standard cataogue. Depending on the version and appication, we suppy singefuid nozzes with differenty stepped spray anges from 0 (soid stream nozzes) to 360 (tank ceaning nozzes). The quoted spray anges appy in cose vicinity to the nozze orifice and without externa infuences. Gravity and air fows infuence the spray pattern. Depending on the version, singefuid nozzes can spray the fuid as a hoow cone, fu cone or fat fan. The soid stream nozze does not spray, but rather produces a cosed jet that hits at a concentrated point. The jet ony Height of the nozze position mm begins to break up after some distance. Twinfuid nozzes have a narrow spray ange of due to the high speed at which the compressibe medium exits. However, as the distance from the nozze increases, the spray pattern becomes increasingy ess sharpy deimited. Twinfuid nozzes normay produce fu cone or fat fan spray patterns. 9 3 Liquid distribution 4 Viscosity However, due to the compressibiity and ower density, the spray pattern of gases can not be formed in the same manner as iquids. An even iquid distribution is crucia to processes such as coating. This requires severa nozzes to be arranged next to each other. This is because whereas a singe nozze woud produce a paraboic iquid distribution, severa nozzes arranged next to each other aow an amost even distribution via overapping. Increased viscosity of the fuid can reduce the fow rate, changes the spray pattern (narrower spraying ange) and aows the dropet spectrum to become coarser. Depending on the fuid properties, it is possibe to counteract this to a certain extent by means of higher pressure. For very viscous substances, it is recommended to use twinfuid nozzes in most cases. It can aso be hepfu to take account of the fuid's rheoogy. The turbuences that cause the discharge noise are significanty reduced by appying mutichanne nozzes with speciay shaped nozze openings. This nozze geometry aso increases the bowing force whie at the same time reducing the air consumption. In some circumstances, the veocity of gases can be very high. If a certain pressure difference is appied to a nozze, veocities of around 320 m/s can often arise in the narrowest cross section. This veocity can even increase briefy after the nozze. The chart beow shows the veocity curve in a fow situation. 6 Narrowest cross section The risk of a nozze bocking depends greaty on its narrowest cross section ( ). xperience has shown that for smooth operation, the maximum partice size in the fuid shoud not exceed one third of the narrowest cross section. The fiing eve of the individua cyinders is determined fuy automaticay. This measuring process can aso record the iquid distribution of a nozze over a moving measuring pane. This enabes conveyor bet spraying to be simuated, for exampe. 5 Gases Fundamentay, the deivery of gases (e.g. air) must be regarded in a differed way to that of iquids. Gases are compressibe fuids, whereas iquids are incompressibe fuids. Gases can be deivered with amost a nozzes with which iquids are aso atomized. Incompressibe Compressibe Hoow cone and fu cone nozzes with axia fow have an interna swir. Hoow cone and fu cone nozzes with infow at the side (tangentia or eccentric design) do not need a swir and are, therefore, much ess prone to bockages. In the fied of fat fan nozzes, our tonguetype nozzes represent a specia design that is ess susceptibe to bockages. 10 W H AT Y O U S H O U L D K P I N M I N D W H N P L A N N I N G 7 Dropet sizes The foowing generay appies: Within a series and at a given pressure, nozzes with a ower fow rate produce finer dropet spectrums than nozzes with a higher fow rate. Twinfuid nozzes can produce very fine to extremey fine dropets. The size depends mainy on the fow rate ratio of the compressibe medium used (m 3 /h) to the atomized fuid (/min): The greater the ratio, the finer the atomization. In the case of singefuid nozzes, however, the decisive factors are pressure, nozze type and fow rate across the dropet spectrum. Increasing pressure resuts in finer atomization, but mosty ony up to a certain eve. Hoow cone nozzes produce very fine to fine dropets at the same pressure and fow rate. Fu cone nozzes produce sighty coarser dropet spectrums, and finay fat fan nozzes have the coarsest dropet spectrum. 8 Ambient conditions The environment being sprayed into is a decisive criterion for which spray ange, pressure, materia or dropet size shoud be seected for the process. If the surrounding gas circuates around a nozze, this can have a direct infuence on the trajectory of the dropets and therefore on the process. Infuencing factors in the environment incude, for exampe pressure and temperature, gas type (e.g. air or SO 2 ), dimensions (e.g. in the case of containers) or other parameters. X Aso for exampe, when ceaning containers it is essentia to pay attention as to whether a fammabe mixture can form in the tank. If this is the case, Lecher tank ceaners with ATX approva can be used. 9 Materias k Materia wear Our standard materias for metaic nozzes are brass and the stainess stees (AISI 303, AISI 316L and AISI 316Ti). Standard nozzes made of pastic are mosty made of PA, PVDF or POM. For specia mechanica, therma or chemica oads, we suppy a wide variety of specia materias, for exampe acidresistant or heatresistant stainess stees, specia aoys, ceramic materias or pastics such as PP, P00 or PTF. It is aso necessary to seect the optimum materia for the seas. Viton, PTF, PDM or WP are used, depending on the appications. However, seaing materias such as Incone or Centeen are aso used for specia cases. Connections Nozzes are mainy manufactured with threads conforming to ISO 228, DIN 2999 (N 2261) and NPT. A distinction is made here between seaing and nonseaing threads. In the case of nonseaing threads, Tefon strip or a thread paste is used to provide the sea. Nozze wear depends greaty on the conditions of use and on the nozze materia. Normay, the nozze's fuid dis charge opening wears as a resut of materia abrasion. The foowing conditions of use can speed up wear: n Amount and hardness of the partices in the fuid n Operating the nozze above the recommended pressure range n Using aggressive substances As wear increases, the spray pattern quaity becomes continuousy worse. In most cases, this can be seen very easiy with the naked eye. At the same time, a change occurs in the spraying parameters, for exampe an increased fow rate. Wear eads to a worse production resut and higher costs. Fig. shows an exampe of a heaviy worn spray ba. For these reasons, reguar maintenance intervas and nozze repacement are particuary important for achieving constant process capabiity. 11 Mechanica ceaning Ceaning effects Rotating ceaning nozzes deiver the greatest possibe impact in order to cean the container wa. To achieve this, arge dropets must strike at high speed. This even aows the ceaning of persistent dirt that woud usuay not dissove. Important infuencing variabes are the distance between the nozze and wa, and the operating pressure. Neither must be too great or the fuid wi break down into smaer dropets (see Figs. 11 and 12) and the impact wi be reduced. esides the impact, the fuid running down the container wa aso has a significant ceaning effect. If the formed fim is thick enough, the resuting shear stresses can remove ight to moderate dirt. In that case, unsprayed patches are ess of an issue than is the case during impact ceaning (see Fig. 5). Rotating ceaning nozzes or spray ba? Due to their simpe construction, spray bas are economica and are resistant to fauts. Whereas rotating ceaning nozzes spray the entire container wa in a fanike pattern, the jets from spray bas strike ony in concentrated spots. The remaining surface is simpy ceaned by the shear stresses of the fuid running off (see Fig. 14). The ceaning process can aso take much onger, depending on the type and degree of dirt. Cost reduction via efficient ceaning processes This is precisey where our nozzes and rotating ceaning nozzes come into pay, having been speciay deveoped for deivering a high mechanica ceaning action.
