Spray depth When fat fan nozzes are used, the impact that can be achieved depends greaty on the quaity of the spray. For exampe, using specia jet geometries (Lecher highpressure fat fan nozzes) or a high fow quaity, a narrower spray depth can be obtained. Assuming that the other parameters (pressure, fow rate, spray ange and medium) remain the same, a narrower spray depth resuts in a higher impact. The jet ony begins to break up after some distance. Twinfuid nozzes have a narrow spray ange of approximatey 20 due to the high speed at which the compressibe medium exits. However, as the distance from the nozze increases, the spray pattern becomes increasingy ess sharpy defined. Twinfuid nozzes normay produce fu cone or fat fan spray patterns, and some versions can be changed over accordingy. The main temperature behaviour of nozze materias In coating processes, for exampe, it is attached to the homogenous distribution of the sprayed iquid. In order to obtain an even iquid distribution, severa nozzes must be arranged next to each other because one nozze aone woud produce a paraboic iquid distribution as standard. The arrangement of severa nozzes enabes an amost even distribution to be obtained by overapping. Twinfuid nozzes can produce very fine to extremey fine dropets, this being mainy dependent on the fow rate ratio of the compressibe medium being used (m³/h) to the atomized iquid (/min). The greater this ratio, the finer the atomization. In the case of singefuid nozzes, the dropet spectrum is determined primariy by the pressure, the nozze design and the fow rate. Increasing pressure resuts in finer atomization, but mosty ony up to a certain eve. A distinction must be made here between owtemperature behaviour and hightemperature behaviour. Appications with temperatures up to 140 C are very common, because this is the range within which for exampe most ceaning appications and steriisation processes fa. Appications with higher temperatures are rare, and appications at very ow temperatures are even more rare. The genera temperature information from materia data sheets must aways be scrutinised for every singe factors that infuence the suitabiity of a nozze materia at higher temperatures are: Pressure and the associated mechanica stress type aong with chemistry and time. Chemica processes can be more aggressive at high temperatures. A materia may be abe to withstand them if this temperature occurs for a short period ony. In a materias, high temperatures resut in reduced strength vaues. The mechanica stress type must therefore aso be taken into account in highpressure appications, in particuar. In addition, vibrations in the system can cause premature faiure. Chemistry (acceerated by high temperatures) Pressure and mechanica stress (e.g. vibrations) Measuring the distribution The iquid distribution in a measuring pane is determined by coecting the voume of iquid in a combination of Pexigas cyinders. The fiing eve of the individua cyinders is determined competey automatic. Provided that the pressure and fow rate are the same, hoow cone nozzes produce very fine to fine dropets, fu cone nozzes produce somewhat coarser dropet spectrums and fat fan nozzes have the coarsest dropet spectrum. If we compare nozzes of one series at a particuar pressure, nozzes with a ower fow rate produce finer dropet spectrums than nozzes with a higher fow rate. 17 6 Materia and wear Signs of nozze wear Nozze wear depends primariy on the conditions of use and the nozze materia. Normay, the nozze's iquid discharge opening wears as a resut of materia abrasion. The foowing conditions of use can speed up wear: n Operating the nozze above the recommended pressure range n Soids in the iquid and aso hard partices n The use of chemicay aggressive substances (see figure) Nozze wear becomes apparent from a noticeabe increase in fow rate. The cause of this is the enarged cross section of the iquid opening that resuts from materia abrasion. This means that if a pressure is permanenty set, more iquid is discharged than it was originay intended. The resut of this is higher fresh water and waste water costs. Fig. 1 shows an exampe of a heaviy corroded spray ba. The diagram beow shows the factors that infuence nozze wear. Materia wear In most cases, excessive wear can be counteracted by seecting a different materia. One of the most common cases is the atomization of a iquid with a soid component. Such particeaden iquids cause significant wear if the partices have a greater hardness than the nozze materia (Fig. 2). The tabe shows different materias and their average Vickers hardness.
