5 What is a Centra Power Suppy System? A Centra Power Suppy System (CPS) is essentiay a arge set of batteries at a singe centra ocation. In the event of a mains faiure in the buiding, the batteries are used to provide power for emergency ighting purposes. The CPS comprises the battery set, battery charger, contro circuitry, aarms and instrumentation to ensure reiabe provision of emergency power when required. The CPS output wi typicay be 24V, 50V, 110V, or 220/230/240/380/400V, according to type. Output is usuay AC/DC for the ower votages, and AC when mains votage. The CPS wi be sized according to the oad required. The battery wi be rated to achieve a specified duration, typicay 1, 2, or 3 hours. A arger project may use one singe arge CPS, or a number of smaer CPS units. How does it work? The CPS effectivey stores energy in the battery set whist the mains suppy is heathy, and draws upon this reserve when required in times of mains faiure. If the faiure is imited to part of the buiding (oca), the CPS may provide power using its incoming suppy without discharging the battery. Mains faiures are detected by sub-circuit monitoring reays to ensure the automatic, fai-safe operation of the emergency ighting. These are situated around the buiding where required, or may be ocated within the CPS itsef. Power from the CPS is distributed to dedicated emergency uminaires and exit signs, or converted save 230V uminaires. Standard, unmodified save 230V uminaires can be used on a mains-votage CPS. Distribution cabes need to be fire protected, according to oca reguations and/or risk assessment. Who decides? The votage of the CPS is infuenced by the size and nature of the project. The fina decision may be taken by the consutant, end user, or contractor. The duration or autonomy of the CPS is often dictated by nationa Standards (eg BS 5266), or oca authority requirements. What are its benefits? A CPS system gives a higher ight output per point when compared to a sef-contained instaation, and therefore wi use fewer emergency ights per area. A CPS soution offers great savings in ongoing testing, maintenance, and repacement battery costs when compared to a sef-contained emergency ighting instaation. 3 Introduction

Principe types of emergency ighting system are sef-contained or centray fed In a sef-contained system, each emergency uminaire has an on-board battery and charger unit. A Centra Power Suppy System operates on the principe that the uminaires are fed, via sub-distribution, from a singe suppy source. A sef-contained system is economic for smaer instaations with a imited tota number of uminaires. A typica sef-contained emergency power pack has an operationa design ife of years, and wi require a repacement battery every 3 5 years. The instaation is straightforward and, by definition, each uminaire is instaed and maintained independenty of a others on the site. After this period the instance of battery faiures may increase, resuting in the possibiity of further unpanned maintenance visits to repace battery sets. After 5 years the incidence of such piecemea activity may cause the cient to consider a fu battery repacement programme. However, the fact that some batteries may have been repaced aready in recent times raises a diemma. Either, you can repace a batteries en masse ignoring the waste of potentiay good batteries and previous abour efforts, or you coud continue with the fragmented maintenance approach (causing irreguar future disruption to the buiding occupier). It can be considered that sef-contained products wi require 2 or more compete sets of repacement batteries during the first 10 years of operation. In ess than 15 years the ikeihood woud be that a sef-contained system woud be ife-expired eading to the need for a competey new set of uminaires. It shoud be noted here, that a more rigorous and beneficia panned maintenance schedue can be achieved, abeit at a higher initia product cost, utiising a suitabe automatic or controed test and monitoring system, to check the uminaires and their batteries ( Centre or IR2: avaiabe from Emergi-Lite). A Centra Power Suppy System has a design ife of 20 years or more, and woud typicay require battery repacement in 8 10 years (depending on battery type). Maintenance requirements are centraised, minimising costs and disruption to the occupier. Furthermore, when battery repacement is required, it is ony needed at the singe centra ocation and can be accompished in a singe visit with minimum disruption to the occupier. Taking a typica arge instaation it can be seen that the ower initia purchase and instaation cost of a sef-contained system is soon countered by the cost of maintenance requirements and frequent battery repacement, when compared to a Centra Power Suppy System. 7 Centra systems fa into two categories AC/AC static inverter systems and AC/DC power suppy systems. Both types of centra system operate on the same principe; that the uminaire is fed, via emergency sub-distribution, from a singe suppy source (the centra system). The term static inverter is derived from the ack of moving parts within the equipment, as opposed to rotary motor/generator converter designs. Centra systems aow a wide range of batteries to be used, which offer different ife expectancies against physica size and cost, ocaised battery/equipment maintenance, fexibe ighting design and greater ight output per uminaire. Static Inverter Systems (AC/AC) Static inverter systems operate in a simiar manner to AC/DC Centra Power Suppy Systems, with the exception that the system constanty gives a 230V AC output. The advantages of this approach are numerous. Firsty, uminaires do not need to be converted, as any save 230V uminaire can be used (there are some restrictions to this on the grounds of suitabiity for emergency ighting). Luminaires aso operate at fu ight output, as they are being fed from a fu mains votage suppy, meaning fewer uminaires are required for equivaent ight outputs. The battery votage seected wi depend upon the number of uminaires, the rating, their type and their distance from the centra system. Centra Power Suppy Systems require each emergency uminaire to be converted for use on the ow votage suppy. The cost of this conversion may be prohibitive on arger instaations. Another important factor is that converted uminaires ony provide a sma percentage of their norma ight output when running in emergency mode. 8 Choosing the right system 6 There are a variety of ways in which backup power can be provided. However, even though certain methods are suitabe for critica appications, they may not necessariy be suitabe for Emergency Lighting. This is because an Emergency Lighting system has unique oad characteristics. And since Emergency Lighting is a critica ife-safety instaation it is vita that a Centra Power Suppy System provided to power it is designed with these oad characteristics in mind. EMEX Power centra inverter systems are specificay designed to provide emergency power for ighting systems in a mains fai or evacuation situation. In choosing the right AC system to support emergency ighting it is important to consider the foowing questions: Overoad performance BS EN requires that an inverter must be abe to start the fu oad without the mains suppy present. How does the system perform in a tota power faiure (ie is the system abe to start the oad without the bypass suppy being avaiabe)? Repeat duty BS EN requires a Centra Power Suppy System to fuy recharge within 24 hours. Is the charger abe to recharge the batteries sufficienty quicky (80% in 12 hours or 100% after 24 hours)? Energy consumption and heat dissipation Is the inverter and charger permanenty running, reducing the battery ife, generating heat and wasting energy? Are cooing fans running continuousy, generating noise and reducing component ife? Maintenance Is the system easy to service and maintain? Is the system designed in a moduar format, or woud the faiure of even a minor component require the whoe system to be shut down and stripped for repair? Genera information on Uninterruptibe Power Suppy (UPS) systems, for guidance: Recharge period UPS systems which are designed primariy for computer back-up generay offer short back-up times, and consequentiay empoy sma chargers. To provide the onger durations specified for emergency ighting, a much arger capacity battery is fitted. However, if the charger is not uprated then the system wi not be capabe of recharging sufficienty quicky. Hence the battery rating is sometimes increased even further so that it is not fuy discharged at the end of the rated duration period (and is thus capabe of repeat duty with imited further recharge). This resuts in a much arger system that is actuay required for the oad, increasing both the physica space required and future battery repacement costs. Overoad and short circuit performance An emergency ighting oad imposes arge in-rush currents when starting amps from cod. However, UPS systems are often designed to shut down at ony 125% overoad and revert to the incoming suppy. During a tota power faiure situation, this coud resut in tota faiure of the emergency ighting system. Furthermore, a UPS may fai to cear a protective device on a ighting circuit, meaning that a singe short circuit faut coud resut in oss of the entire emergency ighting provision. Energy consumption and battery ife Most UPS systems operate in the on-ine mode, whereby the inverter runs constanty to suppy the oad, and power is taken from the battery with the charger running constanty. This paces an excessive rippe on the battery (in contravention of the advice given by most battery manufacturers). Aso, the system is constanty generating heat which has a further detrimenta effect on battery ife. There are energy cost impications to run an on-ine system, and dea with the heat generated. Neutra isoation Some UPS systems use the incoming neutra conductor as the output neutra, with no isoation. Quite apart from that fact that this does not compy with eectricity suppy reguations, shoud the input neutra be ost in some way (for exampe if it were broken due to a fire or other physica damage to the buiding) then the output neutra woud aso be ost, resuting in the faiure of the entire emergency ighting provision. The system has been designed soey for emergency ighting, and not modified from other ess essentia power suppy requirements. As such, the system has exceptiona overoad performance without the need to over-specify the rating of the inverter to ensure fauts can be ceared. Each modue has input and output protection and each modue measures and imits its own current, making it a sef-contained unit. Aarms and status indicators are provided on the front pane dispay, which provides cear and concise information, rather than a ong ist of parameters, which may be confusing. 13 The cabinet System modues EMEX Power utiises standard modues to give reiabe operation, reduces the need to carry extensive and costy spares and gives a ow mean time to repair. Both the inverter AND the charger utiise this moduar approach, aowing a much higher power density than simiar non-moduar systems. The number of modues fitted, together with the appropriate sized battery, determines the rating of the system. A modues connect to a common contro bus via IDC connectors. Main connections to modues are via five front pane terminas giving quick and easy access to terminations, aowing a modue to be changed in a matter of minutes. Each modue has two recessed handes to aid ifting. No side or rear access is required. The cabinet has been engineered to aow the housing of the inverter and charger modues, battery or a combination of both. A connections are in the top contro section of the cabinet. A top entry gand pate is provided for ease of instaation, as is inter-cabinet stee trunking to aow safe connection of battery cabes between contro and battery cabinets. A cabinets have an integra ifting frame and are suppied with ifting eye bots fitted to aow crane ifting. Cabinets aso have an integrated pinth for fork-ift or paet truck. Entry to equipment is via the front door ony, aowing the cabinet to be ocated directy against wa at sides and rear ie can be ocated in corner of room. These batteries are seaed for their design ife of 10 years. Lead Acid Panté and Nicke Cadmium batteries are avaiabe upon request, however, these batteries require a much arger physica area, and emit potentiay exposive gases, meaning the battery room must be adequatey ventiated. Luminaire specification To determine the size of CPS required, our engineers wi need the foowing information about the uminaires intended for the emergency ighting scheme: Luminaire type & manufacturer (incuding uminaire part numbers if avaiabe) Quantity of uminaires in the scheme (per type) Luminaire wattage for each uminaire type note: particuar attention shoud be given to ow wattage uminaires not operating to unity power factor Centra power unit specification Emergi-Lite EMEX Centra Power Suppy Systems are dua rated to aow seection of an appropriate system to either commercia or ICEL ratings. First consideration in system seection shoud therefore be to decide the preferred rating for the CPS ICEL or commercia. ICEL rated systems are de-rated by 20% from their commercia equivaent system. In effect, these systems incude 20% spare capacity to provide the system designer/instaer opportunity to incorporate additiona uminaires into the emergency ighting scheme at a ater date, without compromising the power suppy. Second consideration is to determine the size of centra power unit required. From the uminaire data suppied, Emergi-Lite s CPS department can advise the most appropriate size of CPS unit from our standard range of static inverters dispayed on page 14. Note, higher rated systems require mutipe cabinets to be instaed and therefore consideration shoud be given to the space these cabinets wi require. Cacuation of space requirements is straightforward as Emergi-Lite ony suppy one standard size of cabinet as shown beow. Finay, consider the additiona components required. Emergi-Lite offers two types of standard unit, EMEX Power or EMEX TS, as shown on page 13, pus a range of EMEX Test components on pages 21 & 22 for enhanced management and monitoring of the CPS. 14 Cabinet size Standard cabinet size is 750mm wide x 650mm deep x 1800mm ta. 30 System components Lamp Test Controer addressabe interfaces The LTC is designed specificay to contro uminaires with fuorescent or incandescent amps when working from a static inverter system. 35 Sub-circuit monitoring Hod-off/changeover reays It is a mandatory requirement that Emergency Lighting is energised in the event of a oca sub-distribution faiure, not just on tota buiding suppy faiure. Hod-off & sub-circuit monitoring reays are used to energise uminaires in the case of oca suppy faiure. They may be used to feed more than one uminaire on the same switched circuit and are avaiabe in 1 amp, 8 amp & 12 amp versions. Hod-off reays Hod-off reays are required to monitor the reevant ighting suppy circuits such that a faiure brings on the emergency uminaires automaticay in the event of oca suppy faiure. Non-maintained uminaires are connected to a ocaised sub-circuit hodoff reay fed from a maintained battery system. These uminaires are ony energised when the suppy to the hod-off reay fais. 5, 10, 15 and 20 way sub-circuit monitors (with 12 amp hod-off reay) are avaiabe. 44 EMEX Test detaied specification Genera The system shoud use EMEX Technoogy to provide fu addressabe monitoring of the compete emergency ighting system incuding the EMEX Power Centra Power Suppy System(s). The system must be capabe of monitoring fuorescent, cod cathode fuorescent, fiament, LED, or haogen uminaires. Software System shoud use EMEX Test software to schedue the automatic reguar testing of emergency ighting system components. The system shoud automaticay generate and coate test reports. These reports shoud be automaticay date-stamped and shoud be avaiabe in a notepad format such that engineer s notes can be added. Remote access Software and test reports must be accessibe remotey via a LAN or internet connection. The system must be capabe of exporting data to a BMS in LONWORKS or BACNET format. CPS capacity The system shoud support up to 255 Centra Power Suppy Systems (CPS). Each CPS must be abe to communicate with up to 4,000 uminaires. Communication The system must use data cabe to ink the contro computer to the CPS unit(s), and from each CPS to the associated uminaire interfaces ony. Data cabe must NOT be required direct to any uminaires. Up to 100 substations may be fed from the interna transmitter within the CPS. Luminaires must share the same suppy cabe with mixed mode of operation (maintained, non-maintained, switched maintained). LTC uminaire modue Luminaires for use with MXC each require a oca LTC modue. Each LTC must provide 1 no. switched and 1 no. unswitched oca monitoring input to act directy on the uminaire in addition to any communication received from the substation. A fu range of exit signs, bukhead uminaires, decorative uminaires, and twinspot units must be avaiabe ready fitted with LTC modues. LTC modues must aso be avaiabe oose and in remote encosures for the adaptation of standard save 230V uminaires to the MXC system. Each LTC must be capabe of switching up to 230 watts. The LTC modue must retain the existing mains baast in the uminaire. Fexibiity The system must permit both MXD4 and MXC soutions on the same system, controed from a singe PC. Test input nodes The system must offer test input nodes which aow the engineer to access test reports and contro the system using a aptop PC, from any point on the data cabe. Cabe specification Cabe must be 2 core with additiona earth or drain wire and must be a composite screened cabe. The conductor cross section must be a minimum of 1mm 2 and must be rated for 230V AC. 45 Spacing data In the UK, Buiding Reguation 2000 reguation B1 covers the provision of safe and effective means of escape from a buiding. Approved Document B (2000) (ADB) is a pubished guide to the Buiding Reguations, which specifies that standards for the instaation of escape ighting shoud be according to BS 5266 Part 1. BS 5266 Part 1:2005 is the umbrea standard which refers to BS 5266 part 7:1999 (EN 1838), defining emergency ighting eves of minimum 1.0 ux on the centre ine of an escape route, and 0.5 ux minimum for open areas arger than 60m 2. British Standards are recognised wordwide, or are commony used as the basis of oca standards. NFPA 101 Life Safety Code standards require an average of 10.8 ux with not ess that 1.1 ux at any point for escape routes. We recommend that a copy of reevant oca standards are obtained prior to any design work.
