Various options such as soft-stopping and braking are aso avaiabe. The benefits of controed starting Soid state starting reduces the inrush currents and mechanica shock typica of conventiona eectromechanica motor starters, whie providing sient and smooth acceeration without arcing, chattering or vibration. Wear on bets, chains, gearboxes and bearings is reduced, thus minimizing production osses and ide times. Starting modes range from basic Current Limit starting to Soft Start with Seectabe Kickstart, and other advanced starting modes offered for the PF controer. Standard stopping modes are Soft-stop and coast- to-rest, other optiona advanced stopping modes are avaiabe in the PF controer such as Smart Motor Brake, Accu-Stop and sow-speed with braking. The PF Inteigent controer aso features a Pump Contro option designed specificay to reduce waterhammer in centrifuga pumping appications. Virtuay every controer in the ine provides a choice of starting and stopping combinations that aow you to create a custom motor controer suited for any appication. Larger softstarter frame sizes up to 480A The PCS Softstarter Controer is a Sprecher + Schuh s soid-state controers with rich features at an economica price. This softstarter is specificay designed to start 3-phase motors (up to 400HP@460V / 500HP@575V), but is very compact, easy to use and IN-rai mountabe for modes up to 85A. Four standard starting modes are avaiabe with the PCS Controer: Soft Start Soft Start with Seectabe Kick-Start Current Limit Starting Soft Start with Soft Stop A PCS are designed to contro either a standard 3-phase squirre-cage induction motor or a wyedeta motor 575V Y-). indicated via LE, and the 97/98 faut contact coses. Phase Reversa Protection When enabed via a IP-switch, 3-phase input power wi be verified before starting. If input power phasing is detected to be incorrect, the start wi be aborted and a faut indicated. PCS Sprecher + Schuh IN-rai mounted Controers can be direct connected to CA7 contactors to provide isoation or to KT7 Motor Circuit Controers for branch circuit protection (for modes up to 37A) For use anywhere PCS come in three different frame sizes. The smaest frame is from 3A...37A, the midde size is from 43A...85A and the argest frame size is 108A...480A. These units are avaiabe from 200V...600V - 50/60 Hz. This assures the devices can be used anywhere in the word. Many convenient features Easy Set-up igita rotary switches are quicky and easiy set to the exact vaue. LE indication of a fauts is standard. Buit-in Overoad Protection PCS are equipped with eectronic overoad protection, accompished with the use of current transformers on each of the three phases. Protection is programmabe, providing tota fexibiity. Overoad trip cass seection incudes OFF, 10, 15 or 20 seconds. In addition, either manua or automatic trip reset may be seected. Trip rating is 120% of dia setting. Bypass Contactor PCS controers are equipped with a bypass contactor on each phase. Once the motor is up to speed, the oad is removed from the SCRs, increasing their ife and reducing heat. Over Temperature Protection The Softstarter monitors SCR temperature by means of interna thermistors. When the power poes maximum rated temperature is reached, the microcomputer switches off the PCS, a TEMP faut is Phase Loss / Open Load The PCS wi not attempt to start if there is a singe phase condition on the ine. This protects from motor burnout during singe phase starting. Phase Imbaance The unit monitors for imbaance between phase currents. To prevent motor damage, the unit wi trip if the difference between the minimum phase current and the maximum phase current exceeds 65% for 3 seconds, and a faut wi be indicated. Shorted SCR Prior to every start and during starting, the unit wi check a SCRs for shorts and unit oad connections to the motor. If there is a shorted SCR in the PCS and/or open oad, the start wi be aborted and a shorted SCR or open oad faut wi be indicated. This prevents damage from phase imbaance. Push to Test The unit with contro wiring can be tested for faut conditions by using the Push to Test function. Hod down the Reset button for 7 seconds to activate the faut Aux (97, 98) and shut down the PCS. To cear, either push the Reset button or cyce contro power to the device. 5 Softstarter Inteigent Controers Series PCS Modes of Operation (Standard) Soft Start 100% Percent Votage Initia Torque Start Run This method has the most genera appication. The motor is raised from an initia torque vaue to fu votage. Initia torque is adjustabe to 15%, 25%, 35% or 65% ocked rotor torque. The motor votage is graduay increased during the acceeration ramp time, which can be adjusted from 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 seconds. Time (seconds) Soft Start with Seectabe Kickstart 100% Percent Votage Kickstart (when seected) Start Run uring the Soft Start phase, an initia kickstart or boost can be provided. This suppies a current puse of 450% of fu oad current and is adjustabe from 0.5 to 1.5 seconds. This aows the motor to deveop additiona torque for starting high inertia oads. Time (seconds) Current Limit Starting 500% Fu Load Amps 50% Start Time (seconds) This starting mode is used when it is desired to imit the maximum starting current (inrush). It can be adjusted for 150%, 250%, 350% or 450% of fu oad amps. Start times are seectabe from 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 seconds. If the motor is not up to speed after the seected time eapses, the controer transitions to fu votage. Soft Stop PCS 100% Percent Votage Initia Torque Soft Stop Coast to stop Start Run Stop Time (seconds) Soft Stop can be used for appications requiring an extended coast-to-rest, such as frictiona type oads that tend to stop suddeny when votage is removed from the motor. When enabed, the votage ramp down time is equa to one, two or three times the start time seected. The motor is given an initia torque setting, which is user adjustabe. From the initia torque eve, the output votage to the motor is stepessy increased during the acceeration ramp time, which is user adjustabe. Start Time (seconds) Run Soft Start with Seectabe Kickstart 100% Kickstart (when seected) Percent Votage The kickstart feature provides a boost at startup to break away oads that may require a puse of high torque to get started. It is intended to provide a current puse, for a seected period of time. Start Time (seconds) Run Current Limit Starting 600% Fu Load Amps 50% Start Time (seconds) This method provides current imit start and is used when it is necessary to imit the maximum starting current. The PF controer performs ike a soid-state contactor. Fu inrush current and ocked-rotor torque are reaized. The PF may be programmed to provide fu votage start in which the output votage to the motor reaches fu votage in 1/4 second. Linear Speed Acceeration With this type of acceeration mode, a cosed-oop feedback system maintains the motor acceeration at a constant rate. The required feedback signa is provided by a C tachometer couped to the motor (tachometer suppied by user 0-5V C, 4.5V C = 100% speed). Kickstart is avaiabe with this mode. 100% Motor Speed Forward 15% - High 7% - Low Time (seconds) 10% - Low Start Run Preset Sow Speed This method can be used on appications that require a sow speed for positioning materia. The Preset Sow Speed can be set for either Low, 7% of base speed, or High, 15% of base speed. Reversing is aso possibe through programming. Speeds provided during reverse operation are Low, 10% of base speed, or High, 20% of base speed. 20% - High Reverse PF Soft Stop ➊ The Soft Stop option can be used in appications requiring an extended stop time. The votage ramp down time is user adjustabe from 0 to 120 seconds. The oad wi stop when the votage drops to a point where the oad torque is greater than the motor torque. ➊ Not intended to be used as an emergency stop. The microprocessor anayzes the motor variabes and generates commands which contro the motor and reduce the possibiity of surges occurring in the system. The pump contro modue aso provides a buit-in anti-backspin timer. Time (seconds) PF Smart Motor Brake (Option "PF") ➊ ➋ Accu-Stop (Option "PF") ➊ ➌ Sow Speed with Braking (Option "PF") ➊ This option provides motor braking for appications that require the motor to stop faster than a coast to rest. Braking contro, with automatic zero speed shut off, is fuy integrated into the compact design of the PF controer. This design faciitates a cean, straight forward instaation and eiminates the requirement for additiona hardware such as braking contactors, resistors, timers, and speed sensors. The microprocessor based braking system appies braking current to a standard squirre-cage induction motor. The strength of the braking current is programmabe from % of fu-oad current. This option is used in appications requiring controed position stopping. uring stopping, braking torque is appied to the motor unti it reaches preset sow speed (7% or 15% of rated speed) and hods the motor at this speed unti a stop command is given. This overoad protection is accompished eectronicay with an I 2 t agorithm. When coordinated with the proper short circuit protection, overoad protection is intended to protect the motor, motor controer, and power wiring against overheating caused by excessive overcurrent. The PF Softstarter controer meets appicabe requirements as a motor overoad protective device. The controer s overoad protection is programmabe, providing the user with fexibiity. The overoad trip cass consists of either OFF, 10, 15, 20 or 30 protection. The trip current is programmed by entering the motor fu-oad current rating, service factor, and seecting the trip cass. Therma memory is incuded to accuratey mode motor operating temperature. Ambient insensitivity is inherent in the eectronic design of the overoad. Sta Protection and Jam etection Motors can experience ocked-rotor currents and deveop high torque eves in the event of a sta or a jam. These conditions can resut in winding insuation breakdown or mechanica damage to the connected oad. The PF Softstarter controer provides both sta protection and jam detection for enhanced motor and system protection. Sta protection aows the user to program a maximum sta protection deay time from seconds. The sta protection deay time is in addition to the programmed start time and begins ony after the start time has timed out. If the controer senses that the motor is staed, it wi shut down after the deay period has expired. Jam detection aows the user to determine the motor jam detection eve as a percentage of the motor s fu-oad current rating. To prevent nuisance tripping, a jam detection deay time, from seconds, can be programmed. This aows the user to seect the time deay required before the PF Softstarter controer wi trip on a motor jam condition. The motor current must remain above the jam detection eve during the deay time. Jam detection is active ony after the motor has reached fu speed. Underoad Protection Utiizing the underoad protection of the PF Softstarter controer, motor operation can be hated if a drop in current is sensed. The PF Softstarter controer provides an adjustabe underoad trip setting from % of the programmed motor fu-oad current rating with an adjustabe trip deay time of seconds. Undervotage Protection The PF Softstarter controer s undervotage protection wi hat motor operation if a drop in the incoming ine votage is detected. The undervotage trip eve is adjustabe as a percentage of the programmed ine votage, from %. To eiminate nuisance trips, a programmabe undervotage trip deay time of seconds can aso be programmed. The ine votage must remain beow the undervotage trip eve during the programmed deay time. Overvotage Protection If a rise in the incoming ine votage is detected, the PF Softstarter controer s overvotage protection wi hat motor operation. The overvotage trip eve is adjustabe as a percentage of the programmed ine votage, from %. To eiminate nuisance trips, a programmabe overvotage trip deay time of seconds can aso be programmed. The ine votage must remain above the overvotage trip eve during the programmed deay time. Votage Unbaance Protection Votage unbaance is detected by monitoring the 3-phase suppy votage magnitudes in conjunction with the rotationa reationship of the three phases. The controer wi hat motor operation when the cacuated votage unbaance reaches the user-programmed trip eve. The votage unbaance trip eve is programmabe from % unbaance. Excessive Starts Per Hour The PF Softstarter controer aows the user to program the aowed number of starts per hour (up to 99). This heps eiminate motor stress caused by repeated starting during a short time period. Keypad Programming Programming of parameters is accompished through a five-button keypad on the front of the PF Softstarter controer. The user needs ony to enter the correct sequence of keystrokes for programming the PF Softstarter controer. Auxiiary Contacts Four fuy programmabe hard contacts are furnished as standard with the PF Softstarter controer: Aux #1, Aux #2, Aux #3, Aux #4: N.O./N.C. Norma/Up-to-Speed/Externa Bypass/Faut/Aarm Ground Faut Input The PF Softstarter can monitor for ground faut conditions. An externa core baance current transformer is required for this function. This soid state starter soution is designed to operate 3 phase standard squirre cage induction motors and can be connected to a 6 or 12 ead Wye-eta (Star-eta) or standard 3 or 9 ead motors. Through the use of LINE or INSIE-THE-ELTA contro, the soid state soution can provide utimate contro of the motor. The advantages of a soid state soution incude the foowing: Provides smooth motor starting ecreases current surges on weak eectrica systems Reduced starting torque of the motor heps to reduce mechanica stress on system components Heps meet both oca and regiona eectrica codes when reduced votage starting is a requirement Eiminates votage and current spikes associated with traditiona Wye-eta (Star-eta) starters Maximizes motor ife due to reduced eectrica strain Lowers genera system maintenance requirements for improved uptime The PCEC pane soution provides a standard PCE controer and a factory coordinated faut contactor on a common mounting pate for ease of instaation. The PCE controer utiizes software optimized for the eevator industry aong with a buit-in seectabe Cass 10, 15 and 20 overoad reay and SCR bypass to contro a three phases. The pre-wired contro harness (3 ft / ~1m fying eads) is suppied to simpify wiring into current instaations whie the mounting pate hoes are the same as many standard Wye-eta eectromechanica starter panes. To insure start up performance both the PCE controer and PCEC pane assemby are factory tested before shipping. The resut is a quick and easy starter soution for the eevator and escaator industries. Microprocessor contro provides precision operation PCEC softstarters are under fu microprocessor contro, which imits starting current to the preset adjustabe vaue. Current never exceeds the preset imit. Microprocessor contro aso provides finer increments of adjustment, faciitating smooth, repeatabe, and accurate starting characteristics, independent of component aging and varying environmenta conditions. LE diagnostic dispay An LE dispay indicates operating status and faut condition (overoad, over temperature, phase reversa/ phase oss, phase imbaance, shorted SCR, start faut). This enabes speedy diagnosis and quick resoution of probems. Standard faut contactor The PCEC pane soution is equipped with a standard faut contactor which isoates one side of the motor windings from the ine power in case of softstarter faut or motor overoad. Current fow is prevented by this mechanica isoation in addition to the soid state SCRs. This type of motor contro produces a sow start and insures that the current does not exceed the programmed eve. This is standard configuration of the device and aigns we with traditiona appications. Soft Start 100% Percent Votage Initia Torque Start Run uring Soft start, the votage is ramped from an initia set point to fu votage over the programmed period of time. This type of motor contro produces a smooth start in ess time than the current imit setting, however the current is not restricted. The resut is a smooth stop. PCEC Overoad iagnostics The buit in motor overoad provides protection of the motor for over current conditions. This protection feature offers a user seectabe setting caed the trip cass, which can be used to accommodate different appications and motor types. When the motor draws more than the nomina vaue of current for a period of time, the device wi faut on a motor overoad faut. Over Temperature The product incudes a buit in sef monitoring method for detecting a SCR over-temperature condition. If the interna temperature exceeds a design threshod the device wi faut on a SCR Overtemp faut. Phase Reversa The user can seect the phase reationship of the incoming power. If this phase reationship changes, the device wi faut indicating a probem. Phase Loss/Open Load When any one of the incoming 3 phases are ost, the controer wi faut indicating a phase oss condition has occurred. Phase Imbaance When enabed, this motor protection feature wi detect if a phase imbaance condition exists and faut the unit. A phase imbaance is defined as a 65% differentia between the highest and owest phase for more than 3 seconds. Shorted SCR Each time the PCEC initiates a start, it checks to see if the SCR s are operating correcty.
