For use anywhere PCS Softstarters come in three different frame sizes. The smaest frame is from 3A...37A, the midde size is from 43A...85A and the argest frame size is 108A...480A. Over Temperature Protection The Softstarter monitors SCR temperature by means of interna thermistors. When the power poes maximum rated temperature is reached, the microcomputer switches off the PCS, a TEMP faut is indicated via LE, and the 97/98 faut contact coses. Phase Reversa Protection When enabed via a IP-switch, 3-phase input power wi be verified before starting. If input power phasing is detected to be incorrect, the start wi be aborted and a faut indicated. Phase Loss / Open Load The PCS wi not attempt to start if there is a singe phase condition on the ine. This protects from motor burnout during singe phase starting. Phase Imbaance The unit monitors for imbaance between phase currents. To prevent motor damage, the unit wi trip if the difference between the minimum phase current and the maximum phase current exceeds 65% for 3 seconds, and a faut wi be indicated. Shorted SCR Prior to every start and during starting, the unit wi check a SCRs for shorts and unit oad connections to the motor. If there is a shorted SCR in the PCS and/or open oad, the start wi be aborted and a shorted SCR or open oad faut wi be indicated. This prevents damage from phase imbaance. Push to Test The unit with contro wiring can be tested for faut conditions by using the Push to Test function. Hod down the Reset button for 7 seconds to activate the faut Aux (97, 98) and shut down the PCS. To cear, either push the Reset button or cyce contro power to the device. The motor is raised from an initia torque vaue to fu votage. Initia torque is adjustabe to 15%, 25%, 35% or 65% ocked rotor torque. The motor votage is graduay increased during the acceeration ramp time, which can be adjusted from 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 seconds. 100% Percent Votage Kickstart (when seected) Start Soft Start with Seectabe Kickstart Run uring the Soft Start phase, an initia kickstart or boost can be provided. This suppies a current puse of 450% of fu oad current and is adjustabe from 0.5 to 1.5 seconds. This aows the motor to deveop additiona torque for starting high inertia oads. Softstarters PCS Time (seconds) Current Limit Starting 450% Fu Load Amps 150% Start Time (seconds) This starting mode is used when it is desired to imit the maximum starting current (inrush). Soft Stop 100% Percent Votage Initia Torque Soft Stop Coast to stop Start Run Stop Time (seconds) Soft Stop can be used for appications requiring an extended coast-to-rest, such as frictiona type oads that tend to stop suddeny when votage is removed from the motor. When enabed, the votage ramp down time is equa to one, two or three times the start time seected. The motor is given an initia torque setting, which is user adjustabe. PFS Softstarters 100% Percent Votage Kickstart (when seected) Soft Start with Seectabe Kickstart The kickstart feature provides a boost at startup to break away oads that may require a puse of high torque to get started. It is intended to provide a current puse, for a seected period of time. 35 Softstarter Inteigent Controers Series PF Modes of Operation (Standard PFS) Fu Votage Start Linear Speed Acceeration This method is used in appications requiring across-the-ine starting. The PF controer performs ike a soid-state contactor. Fu inrush current and ocked-rotor torque are reaized. The PF may be programmed to provide fu votage start in which the output votage to the motor reaches fu votage in 1/4 second. With this type of acceeration mode, a cosed-oop feedback system maintains the motor acceeration at a constant rate. The required feedback signa is provided by a C tachometer couped to the motor (tachometer suppied by user 0-5V C, 4.5V C = 100% speed). Kickstart is avaiabe with this mode. PFS Softstarters Preset Sow Speed 100% Motor Speed Forward 15% - High 7% - Low Time (seconds) 10% - Low Start Run This method can be used on appications that require a sow speed for positioning materia. The Preset Sow Speed can be set for either Low, 7% of base speed, or High, 15% of base speed. Reversing is aso possibe through programming. Speeds provided during reverse operation are Low, 10% of base speed, or High, 20% of base speed. 20% - High Reverse Soft Stop ➊ The Soft Stop option can be used in appications requiring an extended stop time. Braking contro, with automatic zero speed shut off, is fuy integrated into the compact design of the PF controer. This design faciitates a cean, straight forward instaation and eiminates the requirement for additiona hardware such as braking contactors, resistors, timers, and speed sensors. 37 escription of Features Eectronic Motor Overoad Protection The PF Softstarter controer incorporates, as standard, eectronic motor overoad protection. This overoad protection is accompished eectronicay with an I 2 t agorithm. When coordinated with the proper short circuit protection, overoad protection is intended to protect the motor, motor controer, and power wiring against overheating caused by excessive overcurrent. The PF Softstarter controer meets appicabe requirements as a motor overoad protective device. The controer s overoad protection is programmabe, providing the user with fexibiity. The overoad trip cass consists of either OFF, 10, 15, 20 or 30 protection. The trip current is programmed by entering the motor fu-oad current rating, service factor, and seecting the trip cass. Therma memory is incuded to accuratey mode motor operating temperature. Ambient insensitivity is inherent in the eectronic design of the overoad. Sta Protection and Jam etection Motors can experience ocked-rotor currents and deveop high torque eves in the event of a sta or a jam. If the controer senses that the motor is staed, it wi shut down after the deay period has expired. Jam detection aows the user to determine the motor jam detection eve as a percentage of the motor s fu-oad current rating. To prevent nuisance tripping, a jam detection deay time, from seconds, can be programmed. This aows the user to seect the time deay required before the PF Softstarter controer wi trip on a motor jam condition. The motor current must remain above the jam detection eve during the deay time. Underoad Protection Utiizing the underoad protection of the PF Softstarter controer, motor operation can be hated if a drop in current is sensed. Controer set up can be performed quicky and easiy without the use of a reference manua. Parameters are arranged in an organized four-eve menu structure for ease of programming and fast access to parameters. Keypad Programming Programming of parameters is accompished through a five-button keypad on the front of the PF Softstarter controer. The five buttons incude up and down arrows, an Enter button, a Seect button, and an Escape button. The user needs ony to enter the correct sequence of keystrokes for programming the PF Softstarter controer. This soid state starter soution is designed to operate 3 phase standard squirre cage induction motors and can be connected to a 6 or 12 ead Wye-eta (Star-eta) or standard 3 or 9 ead motors. Through the use of LINE or INSIE- THE-ELTA contro, the soid state soution can provide utimate contro of the motor. The pre-wired contro harness (3 ft / ~1m fying eads) is suppied to simpify wiring into current instaations whie the mounting pate hoes are the same as many standard Wye-eta eectro-mechanica starter panes. To insure start up performance both the PCE controer and PCEC pane assemby are factory tested before shipping. Microprocessor contro provides precision operation PCEC softstarters are under fu microprocessor contro, which imits starting current to the preset adjustabe vaue. Current never exceeds the preset imit. Microprocessor contro aso provides finer increments of adjustment, faciitating smooth, repeatabe, and accurate starting characteristics, independent of component aging and varying environmenta conditions. This protection feature offers a user seectabe setting caed the trip cass, which can be used to accommodate different appications and motor types. When the motor draws more than the nomina vaue of current for a period of time, the device wi faut on a motor overoad faut. The product incudes a buit in sef monitoring method for detecting a SCR over-temperature condition. If the interna temperature exceeds a design threshod the device wi faut on a SCR Overtemp faut. The user can seect the phase reationship of the incoming power. If this phase reationship changes, the device wi faut indicating a probem. When any one of the incoming 3 phases are ost, the controer wi faut indicating a phase oss condition has occurred. When enabed, this motor protection feature wi detect if a phase imbaance condition exists and faut the unit. A phase imbaance is defined as a 65% differentia between the highest and owest phase for more than 3 seconds. Each time the PCEC initiates a start, it checks to see if the SCR s are operating correcty.
