1 Monthly Electrical Energy Overview February 218 February 218
2 Monthly Electrical Energy Overview February 218 February 218 was characterised by extremely low temperatures, 3.5 C below normal, and consequently higher demand compared to February 217. Peak demand reached 96.6 GW during the intense cold spell at the end of February. Production increased compared to February 217 for all electricity sources. Gross demand increased by 13.4% compared to February 217. Corrected for climate factors, demand was slightly lower (-.2%). Demand by industrial sites connected to the public transmission network record increased by 1.4%. Production was on the rise for all electricity sources compared to February 217, particularly for hydraulic generation, which was up by 56.3%. Wind generation increased by 9% and solar generation by 16.6%. Cold temperatures in February hit the whole of the country and their impact on demand trends appears in all regions. Market prices rose again in February. For France, trade was globally in favour of exports over all its borders except with the CWE area. Three facilities went into service in February 218. Monthly Overview - February 218 2
3 Monthly Electrical Energy Overview February 218 DEMAND Gross demand reached 49.8 TWh, up 13.4% compared with February 217, due to a monthly average temperature down by 4.8 C. Corrected for climatic factors, total demand fell slightly (-.2%). The increase in demand by large industry has continued to slow down since January (+1.4%). GENERATION Production increased for all electricity sources compared to February 217. Fossil fuel generation was up by 1.1% and nuclear generation by 8.1%. Hydraulic generation was up compared to February 217 in many European countries such as Germany (1.96 TWh, + 44%), Spain (2.6 TWh, + 18%) or Italy (2.5 TWh, + 17%) (data from the Transparency platform). In France, hydraulic generation increased by 56.3% compared with 217 to reach more than 7.1 TWh. WIND AND SOLAR Wind generation increased by 9% compared to February 217, reaching 2.77 TWh, due to an increase in installed capacity of 14.2%. Solar production increased by 16.6% reaching.5 TWh, with an increase in installed capacity of 13.6%. TERRITORIES AND REGIONS Cold temperatures during the month led to a sharp increase in demand in all regions. Daily regional demand was between 61 and 329, while it was between 56 and 275 in February 217. Regional demand on Wednesday, 28 February represents between 132% and 163% of the minimum daily regional demand. ELECTRICITY MARKETS Prices were fairly stable in France in the first three weeks of the month. They then rose sharply during the cold spell at the end of February, reaching as much as 159.4/MWh on Tuesday the 27th at 7: p.m., due to significant demand resulting in the use of more costly means of production. INTERNATIONAL TRADE The balance in favour of exports was 2.76 TWh for the whole of February. The balance was notably in favour of imports from 27 to 28 February, reaching a maximum import value of 1 GW on the 28th. The balance in favour of imports from the CWE zone increased and reached almost 2.67 TWh. The balance in favour of exports to Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Great Britain decreased compared to January, while remaining at a relatively high level. NEW INSTALLATIONS The aim of the 3 installations commissioned in February 218 is to electrically strengthen the Arbois region. Monthly Overview - February 218 3

7 Aperçu Monthly mensuel electrical sur l'énergie energy électrique overview Septembre February Distribution of regional generation Distribution of regional consumption Trend in daily regional demand during February 218 Cold temperatures in February hit the whole of the country and their impact on demand trends appears in all regions. For example, regional demand on Wednesday, 28 February represents, depending on the region, between 112% and 135% of the demand of the previous Wednesday and between 132% and 163% of the minimum daily regional demand. This regional demand is much higher than that of February 217, during which temperatures had been warmer. Daily regional demand was then between 56 and 275 and the maximum daily regional demand accounted for between 126 and 15% of the minimum daily regional demand. Monthly Overview - February
