2 Monthly Electrical Energy Overview il 216 Anincreasein gross consumption is observed on april, for the second consecutive month, because of lower temperatures. The difference in temperature is reflected in the increase of 6% in gross consumption. On average, april 216 was colder by 2 C compared to april 215. The biomass base expanded with the connection of the Provence 4 power plant in the PACA region with installed capacity of 15 MW. At the same time, in the Gard, two oil-powered units at the Aramon thermal power station were placed in Multiannual Guaranteed Stop, i.e. a withdrawal of capacity of 1,37 MW. Wind power generation fell by 3% due to less favourable weather conditions. Hauts-de-France region has the highest wind power density and PACA region the highest solar power density. ket prices again fell in Europe. The monthly average French price reached a particularly low level at 25.5/MWh. There was an overall monthly export balance this month. The instantaneous balance switched to imports on five occasions and reached 3,896 MW on aprilthe25th, the lowest level observed since the start of 216. In april 216, 9 installations were turned on. Monthly Overview - il 216 2
3 Monthly Electrical Energy Overview il 216 CONSUMPTION Gross consumption in april 216 increased by 6% compared to 215, the result of the average fall in temperatures of 2 C. The increase inconsumption, compared to reference temperatures, resulting from this totalled nearly 18. The total consumption trend corrected for weather effects stays stable. In the contrary, consumption from industrial sites falls slightly, partly explain by the industrial actions that occured in april. GENERATION Due to the weather that was not very favourable to solar and wind, and in order to meet an increase in consumption, generation of fossil and hydraulic origin increased this month compared to april 215 (respectively +44% and +13%). WIND AND SOLAR Because of less sunshine and less wind, wind generation fell and solar generation increased just slightly compared ton april 215 despite the growth of these kind of installations (+87 MW for wind-driven generation and +84 MW for solar generation in one year). Moreover, load factor for wind generation reached 21% which is a low level compared the average level of 24,3%. TERRITORIES AND REGIONS The area of the territories varies greatly from one region to another. To get round this bias and be able to compare each region s base, the base density is analysed. The PACA region is the one with the highest density of solar power with over 2 KW installed per km² on average. As regards the Hauts-de-France region, it has the highest wind density in the country with over 5 KW/km² on average. ELECTRICITY MARKETS The price on the European markets again fell in il: european consumptin falls in the spring while the cost of fuel for the power plants remains very low. The price in France was only 25.5 /MWh on average, against 39.5/MWh in il last year. The price is higher than in most other countries. Only United Kingdom and Italy have highest prices at respectively 42.2/MWh and 3.8/MWh (Northern Italy), but they are at historically low levels. INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGES This month, in each period recording below-normal daily temperatures, France s instantaneous exchange balance was in favour of imports. Even if France overall remains with an export balance over the month, two trend reversals are noteworthy: France has returned to becoming slightly exporting in relation to the CWE region for the first time since october 215 and importing in relation to Spain for the first time in a year. NETWORK DEVELOPMENT In april 216, 9 installations were turned onto strenghten the network mainly by renewing conductors : 4 underground cables, 1 transformer, 1 reactor, 1 overhead lines and 2 overhead/underground line. 7 Aperçu Monthly mensuel electrical sur l'énergie energy électrique overview tembre il Distribution of regional generation Distribution of regional consumption The regional density of the wind and solar base Regional density of the solar base The regional density of the solar base The density provides an understanding of the installed capacity per km² for each territory. In terms of solar density, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'azur region has the highest rate although its overall capacity is ranked third nationally. Conversely the Rhône-Alpes Auvergne region, with the fourth largest solar base nationally, has a rate below the national average at Regional density of the wind base The regional density of the wind base In terms of wind density, the Hauts-de-France region, whose installed base is the second largest, has the highest rate of density, ahead of the Grand Est region. With the third largest installed base, the Languedoc-Roussillon Midi-Pyrénées region is however in seventh place, slightly below the national average which comes to The four homogeneous wind areas identified by an RTE study can be used to distinguish the potential for each region. The Normandy and Pays-de-la-Loire regions benefiting from a favourable wind area, thus have the potential to increase their density. The technical feasibility of this must of course be placed alongside other factors such as population, urbanisation, etc 8 Monthly Overview - il
