1 Monthly Electrical Energy Overview December 217 December 217
2 Monthly Electrical Energy Overview December 217 The weather in December 217 experienced rainfall and three winter storms. Wind generation reached the highest ever monthly level. The overview of December 217 appears at the same time as the 217 electricity review. There, you can find the analysis for the full year. Total demand corrected for climate contingencies remained stable. Demand by heavy industry continued its downward trend. Monthly nuclear generation increased by 2% compared to December 216. The rainfall conditions lead to a rise in hydraulic generation of 18.1% compared to 216. Wind generation posted two new records: instantaneous power reached 11,75 MW and monthly production 3,348. The effects of storms on wind generation were particularly present. The rate of coverage of demand by wind generation exceeded the 3% threshold in the Grand-Est and Hauts-de-France regions on four occasions. Market prices fell in Europe, particularly during the end-of-year season. The monthly trade balance for France was once again positive in December new installations went into service in December. New: National register of electricity production and storage installations as of 31 October 217 This register, which is available on the RTE Open Data site ( presents the electricity generation and storage facilities connected directly or indirectly to public electricity grids in metropolitan France and in non-interconnected zones (ZNI). Monthly Overview - December 217 2
3 Monthly Electrical Energy Overview December 217 DEMAND The average temperature in December 217 was greater than the normal monthly average by.2 C and up by.4 C compared to December 216. Gross demand, which amounted to 51,549, was up compared to 216 by 1.7%. The recovery in demand by heavy industry continues and total demand adjusted for climate contingencies was slightly up by.4%. GENERATION Nuclear generation increased by 2% compared to December 216 due to the start-up of the reactors at the Tricastin nuclear power plant. The rainfall conditions in December enabled monthly hydraulic generation to increase by 18.1% compared with 216. Conventional thermal generation decreased by 17.5%. WIND AND SOLAR The weather conditions in December, with disruptions including the Ana, Bruno and Carmen storms, led to a very sharp increase in monthly wind generation.monthly wind generation reachesa record value of 3,348, with an average load factor of more than 33.8% and record instantaneous power of 11,75 MW on 3 December at 1:3 p.m. Photovoltaic production fell by more than 25% compared with 216, to reach a value of 275. TERRITORIES AND REGIONS The effects of storms on wind generation were particularly present in the Grand-Est and Hauts-de-France regions. In these two regions, which account for almost half of the monthly wind generation, the rate of coverage of demand by wind generation exceeded the 3% threshold on four occasions. ELECTRICITY MARKETS The French price exceeded 1/MWh on certain hourly periods in early December, but it declined in terms of monthly average. Indeed, demand was lower during the end-of-year period and nuclear availability increased compared to November. INTERNATIONAL TRADE The monthly balance of trade returned to being positive in December 217, standing at 683. The balance of trade to the CWE zone is still increasing, reaching a new record value of 2,913 of imports. The export balance to the United Kingdom and Spain once again became positive, reaching the respective values of 295 and 169 of exports. Lastly, the balance of exports to Switzerland and Italy increased to reach the respective values of 1,68 and 1,451 of exports. NEW INSTALLATIONS The installations commissioned in December include structures provided for in the context of the projects to secure the electricity supply of the Arles, Bazas and Langon areas near Bordeaux, Mauges in the Pays de La Loire and structures forming part of the 2Loires and Bretagne safety net projects. Monthly wind production was particularly high in the Grand-Est (82 ), Hauts-de-France (829 ) and Occitanie (353 ) regions. Effect of storms on wind generation in the Grand-East and Hauts-de-France regions In the Grand-East and Hauts-de-France regions, unlike in December 216, the demand coverage rate exceeded the 3% threshold on four occasions, due in particular to the passing through of storms Ana (11 and 12 December), Bruno (26 and 27 December) and Carmen(31 December). 8 Monthly Overview - December
