5 PrtNde Start-Up Guide 1 INTRODUCTION PrtNde is an external, high perfrmance, Building and Industrial Autmatin multi-prtcl gateway fr OEMs wanting t prvide prtcl translatin between Serial and Serial, Serial-Ethernet and Ethernet-Ethernet devices using LnWrks 1, BACnet 2, Metasys 3 N2 by JCI, Mdbus, DNP3, and mre. This manual prvides installatin infrmatin fr 2 types f custmers: OEMs that have purchased the prduct t be used with their cntrllers and have nt dne a first time start with their cntrller. When the OEM cmpletes the prgramming f the PrtNde with their device, the PrtNde will be vitually plug and play at the OEMs custmer sites. The OEM fllws all the steps in this guide t cmplete the first time start up. End Users that have purchased the preprgrammed PrtNde frm ne f ur OEM custmers and need sme instructins t cnfigure the device. The PrtNde is always pre-cnfigured by the OEM, requiring the end custmer t nly set f DIP switches t lad a cnfiguratin file and set the specific netwrk setting f the device. NOTE: Technical Supprt fr the end user is prvided by the device manufacturer and nt Sierra Mnitr. 6 PrtNde Start-Up Guide 2 CERTIFICATION 2.1 BTL Mark BACnet Testing Labratry The BTL Mark n the BACnet Ruter is a symbl that indicates that a prduct has passed a series f rigrus tests cnducted by an independent labratry which verifies that the prduct crrectly implements the BACnet features claimed in the listing. Click here fr BACnet PIC Statement. 2.2 LnMark Certificatin LnMark Internatinal is the recgnized authrity fr certificatin, educatin, and prmtin f interperability standards fr the benefit f manufacturers, integratrs and end users. LnMark Internatinal has develped extensive prduct certificatin standards and tests t prvide the integratr and user with cnfidence that prducts frm multiple manufacturers utilizing LnMark devices wrk tgether. Sierra Mnitr has mre LnMark Certified gateways than any ther gateway manufacturer, including the PrtCessr, PrtCarrier and PrtNde fr OEM applicatins and the full featured, cnfigurable gateways. Recrd the infrmatin abut the unit. (Sectin 3.3) 2. Set the A, B, and S DIP Switch banks fr Field Prtcl baud rate, Nde-ID/Device Instance, and prper cnfiguratin. (Sectin 3.4) 3. Cnnect the PrtNde t the Field Prtcl prt and custmer s prt t the PrtNde s RS-485 interface. (Sectin 4.4) 4. Cnnect Pwer t PrtNde. After pwer up, the device is installed n BACnet MS/TP r Metasys N2. 5. Where the Field prtcl is BACnet/IP r Mdbus TCP/IP, refer t Sectin 4 t run the PrtNde Web GUI prgram t change the IP Address. N changes t the cnfiguratin file are necessary. 3.3 Recrd Identificatin Data Each PrtNde has a unique part number lcated n the side r the back f the unit. The number frmat is FPC-N34-XXX-XXX-XXXX. 8 PrtNde Start-Up Guide 3.4 Cnfigure the DIP Switches Setting the Nde/ID Device Instance (DIP Switch A0 A7) The A Bank DIP switches n the PrtNde allw users t set the Nde-ID/Device Instance n the Field RS-485. DIP switches A0 A7 can als be used t set the MAC Address fr BACnet MS/TP and BACnet/IP. End custmers will need t g back t the OEM f the device that they are installing t get the DIP settings fr the PrtNde. The PrtNde part number will need t be prvided t identify the unit. 11 PrtNde Start-Up Guide The tp 3 pin prt will always be R1, unless it s a LnWrks PrtNde in which case the prt designatin is LnWrks (and the prt is 2 pins). The bttm 6 pin prt will be R2. NOTE: The 6 pin prt can be RS-232, RS-485, RS-422 r KNX (and we use the left 3 pins fr this as currently shwn). Figure 6: R2 Prt 4.2 Device Cnnectins t PrtNde PrtNde 6 Pin Phenix cnnectr fr RS-485 Devices The 6 pin Phenix cnnectr is the same fr PrtNde FPC-N34 (BACnet) and FPC-N35 (LnWrks). Pins 1 thrugh 3 are fr Mdbus RS-485 devices. The RS-485 GND (Pin 3) is nt typically cnnected Pins 4 thrugh 6 are fr pwer. D nt cnnect pwer until Sectin 4.6. 12 PrtNde Start-Up Guide 4.3 Resistr and Pwer Jumper Infrmatin Bias Resistrs Bias Resistrs Figure 8: Bias Resistrs The PrtNde bias resistrs are used t keep the RS-485 bus t a knwn state, when there is n transmissin n the line (bus is idling), t help prevent false bits f data frm being detected. The bias resistrs typically pull ne line high and the ther lw - i.e. far away frm the decisin pint f the lgic. In the RS-485 carrier, the bias resistr is 510 hms which is in line with the BACnet spec. It shuld nly be enabled at ne pint n the bus (n the Brian field prt were there are very weak bias resistrs f 100k). Since there are n jumpers, many Brains can be put n netwrk withut running int the bias resistr limit which is < 500 hms. NOTE: See fr additinal pictures and ntes. Page 12 f 37

14 PrtNde Start-Up Guide Pwer Jumper Settings Pwer Jumper Switch in psitin A Figure 10: Pwer Jumper Switch The PrtNde Carrier Bard pwer jumper is set t psitin A by default, but can be changed t psitin B fr ther pwer supply requirements. Psitin A: The Carrier makes use f a full-wave rectifying bridge. Can be used fr VAC input r 9 30 VDC input. At 9 VDC this becmes marginal. Psitin B: The Carrier makes use f a half-wave rectifying bridge. Best psitin fr Grunded AC Transfrmers and fr using DC vltage dwn t 9VDC. Page 14 f 37

15 + PrtNde Start-Up Guide 4.4 Wiring Field Prt t RS-485 BMS Netwrk Cnnect the RS-485 netwrk wires t the 3-pin RS-485 cnnectr n PrtNde FPC-N34 as shwn belw in Figure 11. The RS-485 GND (Pin 3) is nt typically cnnected If the PrtNde is the last device n the RS-485 trunk, then the End-Of-Line Terminatin Switch needs t be enabled (Figure 12). PrtNde accepts either 9-30VDC r VAC n pins 4 and 5. Frame GND shuld be cnnected. 17 PrtNde Start-Up Guide 5 CONNECT THE PROTONODE S WEB GUI TO SETUP IP ADDRESS FOR ETHERNET NETWORK 5.1 Cnnect the PC t PrtNde via the Ethernet Prt Cnnect a CAT5 Ethernet cable (Straight thrugh r Crss-Over) between the PC and PrtNde. The Default IP Address f PrtNde is , Subnet Mask is If the PC and PrtNde are n different IP Netwrks, assign a static IP Address t the PC n the xxx netwrk. 18 PrtNde Start-Up Guide 5.2 Setting IP Address fr Field Netwrk After setting a lcal PC t be n the same subnet as the PrtNde (Sectin 5.1), pen a web brwser n the PC and enter the IP Address f the PrtNde; the default address is The Web Cnfiguratr will be displayed as the landing page. (Figure 16) NOTE: Belw the Active Prfiles heading are listed the prfiles fr cnnected devices. If n prfiles are present, then the wiring, baud rate, and DIP switch settings must be checked, because there is a prblem with device cmmunicatins. All the active prfiles must shw the crrect Nde-ID s befre prceeding. NOTE: If multiple devices are cnnected t the PrtNde and virtual server ndes are required, set the BACnet Virtual Server Ndes field t Yes ; therwise leave the field n the default N setting. 19 PrtNde Start-Up Guide Frm the Web GUI s landing page, click n Setup t expand the navigatin tree and then select Netwrk Settings t access the IP Settings menu. (Figure 17) Figure 17: Changing IP Address via Web GUI Mdify the IP Address (N1 IP Address field) f the PrtNde Ethernet prt. If necessary, change the Netmask (N1 Netmask field). Type in a new Subnet Mask. If necessary, change the IP Gateway (Default Gateway field). Type in a new IP Gateway. NOTE: If the PrtNde is cnnected t a ruter, the IP Gateway f the PrtNde shuld be set t the IP Address as the ruter. Reset PrtNde. Unplug Ethernet cable frm PC and cnnect it t the netwrk hub r ruter. Recrd the IP Address assigned t the PrtNde fr future reference. Page 19 f 37

20 PrtNde Start-Up Guide 6 LONWORKS (FPC-N35): COMMISSIONING PROTONODE ON A LONWORKS NETWORK Cmmissining may nly be perfrmed by the LnWrks administratr. 6.1 Cmmissining PrtNde FPC-N35 n a LnWrks Netwrk The User will be prmpted by the LnWrks Administratr t hit the Service Pin n the PrtNde FPC-N35 at the crrect step f the Cmmissining prcess which is different fr each LnWrks Netwrk Management Tl. If an XIF file is required, see steps in Sectin t generate XIF. Lst r Incrrect IP Address Ensure that FieldServer Tlbx is Laded n the PC that is currently being used, r dwnlad FieldServer-Tlbx.zip n the Sierra Mnitr webpage, under Custmer Care: Resurce Center, Sftware Dwnlads: Extract the executable file and cmplete the installatin. Ethernet Prt Figure 20: Ethernet Prt Lcatin Disable any wireless Ethernet adapters n the PC/Laptp. Disable firewall and virus prtectin sftware if pssible. Cnnect a standard CAT5 Ethernet cable between the PC and PrtNde. Duble click n the FS Tlbx Utility. Check IP Addresses frm the Device listings. Crrect IP Address(es) by right clicking the settings icn and changing the IP Address. Page 22 f 37

25 PrtNde Start-Up Guide Appendix A.4. LED Diagnstics fr Cmmunicatins Between PrtNde and Devices Please see the diagram belw fr PrtNde FPC-N34 and FPC-N35 LED Lcatins. Diagnstic LEDs Tag SPL RUN ERR RX TX PWR Descriptin The SPL LED will light if the unit is nt getting a respnse frm ne r mre f the cnfigured devices. Fr LnWrks units, LED will light until the unit is cmmissined n the LnWrks netwrk. The RUN LED will start flashing 20 secnds after pwer indicating nrmal peratin. The SYS ERR LED will g n slid 15 secnds after pwer up. It will turn ff after 5 secnds. A steady red light will indicate there is a system errr n the unit. If this ccurs, immediately reprt the related system errr shwn in the errr screen f the GUI interface t supprt fr evaluatin. If scket prtcl is serial, the RX LED will flash when a message is received n the hst prt. If scket prtcl is Ethernet, this LED is nt used. If scket prtcl is serial, the TX LED will flash when a message is sent n the hst prt. If scket prtcl is Ethernet, this LED is nt used. This is the pwer light and shuld shw steady green at all times when the unit is pwered. Figure 22: Diagnstic LEDs Page 25 f 37

The Admin accunt has unrestricted access t the PrtNde. The User accunt can view any PrtNde infrmatin, but cannt make any changes r restart the PrtNde. The passwrd needs t be a minimum f eight characters and is case sensitive. If the passwrd is lst, click cancel n the passwrd authenticatin ppup windw, and the Passwrd recvery tken t supprt@sierramnitr.cm t receive a temprary passwrd frm the Sierra Mnitr supprt team.
