6 What is a Ceanroom? An Introduction to Ceanrooms A "ceanroom" is essentiay a controed environment in which the eves of particuate, microbes, and contamination of a kinds are reduced. The appication of ceanrooms has increased and diversified as technoogy advances. More susceptibe the product is to contamination, stricter the standard. Ceanrooms are used extensivey in semiconductor manufacturing, biotech, the ife sciences and other fieds that are very sensitive to environmenta contamination. The air entering a ceanroom from outside is fitered to excude dust, and the air inside is constanty recircuated through highefficiency air fiters to remove internay generated contaminants. Staff enter and eave through airocks (sometimes incuding an air shower stage), and wear protective cothing such as hoods, face masks, goves, boots and coveras. Equipment inside the ceanroom is designed to generate minima air contamination. Ony specia mops and buckets are used. Ceanroom furniture is designed to produce a minimum of partices and to be easy to cean. Common materias such as paper, pencis, and fabrics made from natura fibers are often excuded, and aternatives used. Ceanrooms are not sterie (i.e., free of uncontroed microbes) ony airborne partices are controed. Partice eves are usuay tested using a partice counter and microorganisms detected and counted through environmenta monitoring methods.
