2 1 Foreword In 2012 the Europen Technology Pltform (ETP) for the Electricity Networks of the Future hs presented its updted Strtegic Reserch Agend (SRA 2035) on SmrtGrids. With the SRA 2035 the SG ETP gives detiled descriptions of longer term reserch nd innovtion ctivities, necessry for electricity networks nd intelligent electric systems y 2035 nd contriuting to the EU s envisioned CO2 reduction of minimlly 80% y In the SRA 2035, mny reserch topics hve een defined in vrious reserch res. No priorities hve een defined yet. This document Priorities mong SRA 2035 reserch topics gives focus on those SmrtGrids reserch topics which re considered s key priorities mong group of SmrtGrids experts. This document serves s input to the EU Frmework Progrmme for reserch nd innovtion Horizon 2020 strting in 2014 s well s other SmrtGrids RD&D inititives oth on ntionl nd Europen level. 3 36 Executive Summry: Priorities for SRA 2035 Reserch Topics With this document the SG ETP wnts to move forwrd nd support the mny stkeholders in reching their gols even more. The SG ETP ims to identify those SRA 2035 SmrtGrids reserch topics tht re long term. The gol is the estlishment of common understnding mong stkeholders nd put priority on them. Gol: Determine long term SRA 2035 SmrtGrids reserch topics, estlish common understnding mong experts, put priority on them The SG ETP intends to work out n implementtion pln for the long-term nd urgent SmrtGrids reserch res, covered in the SRA As prt of this process, the SG ETP stkeholders need to determine, 1) wht type of urgent reserch questions need to e hndled y 2) wht type of reserch stkeholders in 3) wht type of coopertion project. The plnned result is long-term SmrtGrids reserch implementtion pln to e revised periodiclly. Initilly, the SmrtGrids reserch community together with dvnced industril nd SME reserch will hve centrl roles in setting up this reserch pln. The other stkeholders, prticulrly Network Opertors ssocitions (ENTSO-E nd EDSO for Smrtgrids) nd the consumer nd ncillry service relted new service providers will need to pronounce their needs. Some of these needs will come from the experiences of the erly EEGI nd ntionl SmrtGrids projects, currently or soon underwy in Europe. The coordintion nd coopertion etween the reserchers in cdemi (sic nd pplied), in the System-Developing-Industry nd -SMEs is importnt to ensure tht ll necessry new requirements concerning long-term grid-sed system questions re ddressed. In Oct. 2012, the SG ETP hs initited SmrtGrids stkeholder process for nswering the following questions: Question 1: Which of the SRA 2035 reserch topics need to e elorted mong the SmrtGrids stkeholders in more detil to get n improved common understnding of wht results, projects, types of collortion re needed? Which of the SRA 2035 SmrtGrids reserch topics re of longer term interest? I.e. which topics need to e covered y fundmentl nd pplied reserch? These priority topics could lter e used s prt of EERA, TSO nd TSO/DSO plns. Three priority levels re used for SmrtGrids reserch topics: DRAFT: Setting Priorities Among SRA 2035 Reserch Topics Pge 2 of 34

4 Ctegory 1 (long-term needs) SRA 2035 topic is only wekly or not covered y current reserch work (these re the long-term reserch topics) THIS RESEARCH IS VERY CHALLENGING, COMPLEX AND URGENTLY NEEDED; NOT YET ONGOING WITH ENOUGH INTENSITY. Ctegory 2 (medium-term needs) SRA 2035 topic is covered with minor gps y current reserch work (these re the medium-term reserch topics) THIS RESEARCH WORK IS ALREADY ONGOING TO LARGE EXTENT Ctegory 3 (short-term needs) SRA 2035 topic is mostly covered y current reserch work (i.e. these re short-reserch topics) THIS RESEARCH WORK IS ALREADY ONGOING Question 2: Wht is the priority mong the urgently needed long-term reserch topics? Answers to this question should help to find the most importnt topics mong those considered s ctegory 1 reserch topics DRAFT: Setting Priorities Among SRA 2035 Reserch Topics Pge 3 of 34

At the workshop the nswers to questions were used s input together with the expert opinions of those present t the meeting. The experts were divided into two groups: One group delt with the priority setting of the reserch res D (Distriution) nd RC (Retil nd Consumer), the other group determined priorities for the res IS (Integrted Systems) nd SE (Socio-Economic questions). Due to the fct tht ENTSO-E nd EDSO for Smrtgrids re undertking their own reserch gend nd in order to void duplicting efforts, res T nd T&D were not discussed t the meeting in Berlin.
