4 Convenience electronics Sensors nd hydrulic system The function of the CSC roof involves complex interction etween the roof hydrulics nd roof sensors. As descried ove, the entire roof movement sequence, with the exception of the sliding roof module, is crried out vi 8 hydrulic cylinders, which re ctuted in pirs y hydrulic unit. This ctution is crried out vi three solenoid vlves in the hydrulic unit's vlve lock. So tht the roof control system cn monitor the current positions of ll moving ssemlies, the roof system is equipped with 12 Hll senders. A microswitch in the luggge comprtment registers the correct position of the luggge cover. A temperture sensor on the hydrulic pump monitors the temperture of the pump drive. Timeouts, which indicte filure of the roof function due to - lek in the hydrulic system, - mechnicl dmge, - locked movements, - implusile convertile roof position messges or - communiction fults etween the linked control units re dditionlly integrted into the roof control electronics. These timeouts lso serve to protect the system, etc., y limiting convertile roof following continuous or stoppge in n intermedite position for 8 minutes. 6 Convenience electronics sensors The Eos is equipped with n extensive roof sensor system. The illustrtion shows the pproximte positions of the individul sensors within the overll convertile roof. An initil rekdown of the tsks nd instlltion loctions of the sensors is ville in the form of n overview in the following tles. More detiled informtion cn e found in the chpter entitled "Electricl components". With one exception, the sensors re ll Hll senders. Only the sensor which determines whether the luggge cover is in position is microswitch. This is the luggge cover contct switch F364, locted on the left-hnd luggge cover mounting. Three types of Hll sender re fitted: - Hll elements with integrted reference mgnet, - Hll elements with n externl reference mgnet nd - Hll elements with two externl reference mgnets. These do not register the entire course of movement, ut only one or more end points of the movements of individul components nd locks. The convertile roof ctution control unit cnnot therefore determine the intermedite position in which roof segment is locted t n ritrry point in time, only whether it is locted in one of the end positions. To gurntee mximum possile operting sfety, the mjority of sensors re fitted twice (1 sensor per side of the vehicle). These re lso referred to s redundnt sensors. S379_056 24

8 Convenience electronics Hll senders in the roof sensor system As in the cse of other vehicle systems, Hll senders re lso suitle for position detection. The roof sensor system in the Eos is equipped with three different types of Hll sender: - Hll senders with integrted mgnet - Hll senders with n externl mgnet - Hll senders with two externl mgnets. Exmple: Sender with integrted reference mgnet In this design, s e.g. in the cse of the senders for opening the roof side memer flps, the sender's signl voltge chnges when the roof side memer's crrier moves into the integrted mgnet's field. By positioning the sender ccordingly, the monitored component's reching defined end position cn e determined. Due to this structure, however, the sensor electronics re unle to distinguish etween whether the monitored component is locted in the other end position or etween the two end positions. The disdvntge of this design is tht the sender nd the sensed component hve to e positioned very precisely in reltion to ech other, so tht the sensed component is le to dequtely influence the signl voltge when it moves through the integrted mgnet's mgnetic field. 10 Convenience electronics Hydrulic unit The 8 hydrulic cylinders for the convertile roof nd the rer lid re supplied with hydrulic fluid y just one hydrulic unit. This is instlled eneth the floor cover in the luggge comprtment nd is encpsulted in fom jcket. Structure of the hydrulic unit The hydrulic unit is comprised, mongst other elements, of the reservoir, the pump drive (convertile roof ctution hydrulic pump ) nd the vlve unit with three 3/2-wy solenoid vlves. The hydrulic pump temperture sender G555 is integrted into the pump drive, nd monitors its temperture to prevent overheting. The convertile roof ctution hydrulic pump is initilised to the left nd right y the convertile roof ctution control unit. All hydrulic connections re mrked with numericl code, so tht they cn e esily distinguished during instlltion work. 11 Structure of the vlve unit The vlve unit is comprised of three 3/2-wy solenoid vlves, two mechnicl shuttle vlves, numer of non-return vlves, mechnicl dul pressure vlve nd n emergency cock screw. The solenoid vlves re clled: Power operted convertile roof vlve 1, Power operted convertile roof vlve 2 nd Power operted convertile roof vlve 3. An emergency cock screw * is used to open ypss which depressurises the system. In n emergency, the convertile roof cn therefore lso e moved mnully. If vlve is supplied with current, it llows the delivery pressure through. If it is not supplied with current, hydrulic fluid is le to flow in the opposite direction ck to the pump reservoir (return flow position). Due to the specil lyout of the vlves nd integrtion of the pump's operting direction, the four cylinder pirs cn e ctuted independently of one nother. In the following, the entire roof opening nd closing movement will e roken down into individul stges in order to clrify the vlve control system's interction. 12 Convenience electronics Opening the convertile roof 1. The pump is initilised to the right. The hydrulic fluid psses to solenoid vlves, nd vi the shuttle vlve (). These re supplied with current nd open. Vlve is supplied y the second shuttle vlve (). The hydrulic cylinders in the rer lid securing frmes (3) extend, ecuse the operting pressure eneth the plungers cts on lrger plunger surfce thn ove the plunger. Due to the hydrulic cylinders' movement, the rer lid is relesed from the ody nd the C segment. The securing frme is locked to the rer lid so tht the rer lid is le to pivot out to the rer during the further process. 3 S379_089 S379_ The pump's delivery direction chnges; the three vlves, nd continue to e supplied with current. In this position, the pump's delivery current is forced into the hydrulic cylinders in the roof side memers (1), so tht these re retrcted. Due to this movement, the upper C segment is relesed nd is then pivoted over the middle segment. The roof side memers re dditionlly relesed from the A-pillrs. The shuttle vlve () over the hydrulic pump closes versus the return flow from the roof side memers' hydrulic cylinders, with the result tht the remining cylinders re held in position. 1 S379_059 S379_012 30
13 S379_ The pump continues to deliver to the left. Vlve switches to the return flow position. The pump's delivery current now flows to the hydrulic cylinders in the rer lid hinges (4) nd moves the plungers into the cylinders. Due to this movement, the rer lid is pivoted open to the rer, nd the roof side memer flps open. The roof pckge cn now e stowed in the luggge comprtment. The hydrulic cylinders in the roof side memers remin under pressure, so tht they hold the C segment in position ove the M segment. S379_013 2 S379_ Now, vlve is lso switched to the return flow position. Only vlve is now supplied with current, nd llows the delivery current to pss. In this vlve position, the hydrulic fluid from the pump compresses the two hydrulic cylinders in the min hinges (2). The roof pckge is stowed in the luggge comprtment, wherey the roof side memers re compelled to move outwrds vi sliding guide ril. S379_015 31
14 Convenience electronics 5. Now, vlves nd re lso supplied with current y the convertile roof ctution control unit. The hydrulic pump continues to deliver to the left. The two hydrulic cylinders in the rer lid hinges (4) extend gin, so tht the rer lid nd the roof side memer flps re closed gin. S379_064 4 S379_ When the pump is operting to the left, vlve cuses the securing frme to e locked to the ody nd the securing frme to e relesed from the rer lid y compressing the hydrulic cylinders in the rer lid securing frme (3) gin. The C segment is locked in position in the luggge comprtment with the id of ruer uffers. When vlve is currentless nd the convertile roof ctution control unit's hydrulic pump is switched off, convertile roof movement is completed. 15 Closing the roof 3 S379_ The hydrulic pump strts up to the left nd vlves nd re supplied with current. The hydrulic cylinders in the rer lid securing frmes (3) extend, ecuse the operting pressure in the chmer elow the plungers cts on greter plunger re thn in the chmer ove the pistons. The securing frme locks move into the position for opening the rer lid. S379_045 S379_ The pump continues running to the left nd only vlve is supplied with current. In this mnner, the delivery current psses vi the second shuttle vlve () to the hydrulic cylinders in the rer lid hinges (4). As vlve is locted in the return flow position, the two cylinders re compressed gin, so tht the rer lid nd the roof side memer flps open. S379_046 33

As result of this, the two hydrulic cylinders in the min hinges (2) re extended. The min drive therey lifts the convertile roof pckge out of the luggge comprtment. In this mnner, the pump's delivery current is le to extend the hydrulic cylinders in the roof side memers (1). The C segment lowers nd is locked to the M segment. At the sme time, the roof side memers re locked to the A-pillrs. S379_050 3 S379_ When the pump is operting to the right, only vlve remins open. The hydrulic cylinders in the rer lid securing frmes (3) re compressed. The rer lid nd C segment locks close nd therey secure the roof's "closed" end position. The rer lid is relesed gin t the sme time. When the hydrulic pump is switched off nd vlves, nd re switched to currentless, the roof movement is ended nd the system is pressureless gin. S379_051 35
18 Convenience electronics Rer lid ssist If the Eos is fitted with Prk Distnce Control (PDC), this dditionlly contins the rer lid ssist function. This is convenience function nd serves to void dmge to the rer lid on movement of the convertile roof. Prk Distnce Control In chieving this, the rer lid ssist system mkes use of the vehicle's Prk Distnce Control sensors, which re instlled in the umper, the convertile roof control system sensors, the convertile roof ctution utton, plus the gong nd the disply in the dsh pnel insert. Rer lid ssist functions independently of Prk Distnce Control. Prk Distnce Control is only ctive when reverse ger is engged, whilst rer lid ssist is ctive s soon s the convertile roof ctution utton is pressed to move the convertile roof. If reverse ger is engged t the sme time, rer lid ssist tkes precedence over Prk Distnce Control. Rer lid ssist S379_165 Whilst Prk Distnce Control emits stop wrning in the form of continuous sound if n ostcle is locted pprox. 30cm ehind the vehicle, rer lid ssist opertes with n lrm distnce of pprox. 50cm to the rer of the vehicle. This ensures tht sufficient spce is ville to move the rer lid horizontlly (pprox. 38cm). Rer lid ssist detection rnge S379_166 Mx. horizontl trvel of the rer lid 36
19 If the convertile roof ctution utton is pressed, this lso simultneously ctivtes the rer lid ssist system. If n ostcle is locted within the detection rnge to the rer of the vehicle t this point in time, the opertor is provided with corresponding wrning messge vi the disply, nd corresponding coustic signl is sounded vi the gong. Depending on the convertile roof ctution control unit's coding, convertile roof is not strted. By pressing the utton gin for few seconds, convertile roof movement cn e commenced despite the wrning messge. Cse exmple: Ostcle rises fter T1 Strt of convertile roof movement End of convertile roof movement If no ostcle hs een detected in the rer re on requesting convertile roof movement, i.e. y pressing the convertile roof ctution utton (T0), clculted time intervl strts on relese of the rer lid (T1). Within this time intervl, rer lid ssist remins ctive nd wrning messge is issued if new ostcle is detected. The time intervl ends with the clculted point in time T2. This is the point of time s of which the rer lid moves into the rer lid ssist detection rnge.
