4 Descriptio Geeral iformatio OHB medium voltage circuit-breakers for outdoor istallatio use sulphur hexafluoride gas (SF6) to extiguish the electric arc ad as the isulatig medium. Breakig i SF6 gas takes place without curret choppig or geeratio of overvoltages. These characteristics guaratee a log electrical life for the circuit-breaker ad limited dyamic, di-electric ad thermal stresses o the istallatio. The ESH type of stored eergy ad free release mechaical operatig mechaism allows opeig ad closig operatios through local ad remote cotrol. The operatig mechaism, the activatig kiematics of the movig cotacts ad the ati-codesatio heater are located iside a tight metal eclosure which also acts as the support for the poles. The above-metioed structure is supported by a frame made of telescopic metal sectios which allow the height of the circuit-breaker termial to be adapted from 2800 mm to 3700 mm. The metal eclosure has IP 54(*) degree of protectio ad is fitted with a tight door with a ispectio widow. The circuit-breaker is compact ad esures a high level of sturdiess ad excellet mechaical reliability. The eclosure is made out of a steel plate with adequate surface protectio by a special metalisig ad paitig process. The support structures are hot dip galvaised. The gas caot escape through the ozzle because the hole is still closed by the fixed arcig cotact ad caot eve escape through the iside of the arcig cotact, because of the cloggig effect of the electric arc. at low curret values, the arc is extiguished whe the curret passes through its atural zero ad the gas flows through the cotacts. The low pressure level caot chop the curret ad the modest amout of gas which escapes is sufficiet to restore di-electric resistace betwee the two cotacts, prevetig restrikig o the risig frot of the recovery voltage. at high short-circuit values, the pressure wave geerated by the electric arc closes the valve betwee the two chambers so that the circuit-breaker starts to operate as pure self-blast apparatus. The pressure icreases i the upper volume due to the gas heatig ad molecular dissociatio due to the high temperature. The pressure icrease is proportioal to the arc curret ad esures arc extictio durig the first passage through zero curret. Circuit-breaker ope The arc has bee extiguished, the self-geerated pressure i the upper volume decreases because the gas is flowig through the cotacts. The valve re-opes ad a ew jet of fresh gas flows i ad washes the chamber. This meas the apparatus is immediately ready to close ad trip agai up to its maximum breakig capacity. 7

Tropicalisatio The OHB circuit-breakers are maufactured i compliace with the strictest regulatios for use i hot-humid-salie climates. All the importat metal compoets are treated agaist corrosio. The sheet metal compoets are metalised with zic ad paited to esure protectio agaist corrosio. The support structures are hot dip galvaised. These costructio characteristics mea the OHB circuit-breakers ad their accessories comply with climate graph 8 of the IEC ad IEC (Test B: Dry Heat) / IEC (Test Bd: Damp Heat, cyclic) Stadards. All this is due to the medium voltage apparatus maufacturig facility evirometal maagemet system, certified by a exteral idepedet orgaisatio. Assessmet of the eviromet impact durig the life cycle of the product (LCA - Life Cycle Assessmet), is carried out durig the desig stage itself ad materials, processes ad packig methods are selected to miimise the same. Productio techiques which prepare the products for simple dismatlig ad separatio of the compoets are used durig maufacture of the circuit-breakers. This is to allow maximum recyclig at the ed of the useful life cycle of the apparatus. Ati-pumpig device The ESH operatig mechaism o OHB circuitbreakers (i all versios) is fitted with a mechaical ati-pumpig device which prevets reclosig due to either electrical or mechaical commads. Should both the closig commad ad ay oe of the opeig commads be active at the same time, there would be a cotiuous successio of opeig ad closig operatios. The ati-pumpig device avoids this situatio, esurig that each closig operatio is oly followed by a sigle opeig operatio ad that there is o closig operatio after this. To obtai a further closig operatio, the closig commad must be released ad the relauched.
