Please read ths manual thoroughly. You wll fnd t worth your whle; even f you have cycled all your lfe and feel lke a veteran wth your new bke. Bcycle technology has developed tremendously over the past few years. For your enjoyment and safety when cyclng, please read the complete frst part of ths manual thoroughly and strctly follow the assembly nstructons gven n chapter Assembly from the BkeGuard. read chapter Before your frst rde and see chapter Intended use to read up on how to use your new bke and on the permtted overall weght (rder, clothng and baggage) and carry out the mnmum functonal check before every rde. Note that the nstructons and tps may requre further explanaton dependng on varous factors, such as the experence and sklls of the person dong the work or the tools beng used, and some jobs may requre addtonal (specal) tools or measures not descrbed n the manual. 4 4 INTENDED USE INTENDED USE 5 INTENDED USE To defne the ntended purposes for the dfferent types of bcycles, we have classfed our bkes n dfferent categores. The purpose of ths classfcaton s to defne the test requrements complyng wth the respectve stress as early as durng the development of our bkes. Ths s to ensure the hghest possble level of safety for the use of our bkes. It s therefore of major mportance that the bkes are not used under condtons beyond the ntended use, as ths bears the rsk that the bkes maxmum load s exceeded and the frame or other components are damaged. Ths can result n severe crashes. The rder s maxmum weght ncl. baggage should not exceed 120 kg. Under certan crcumstances ths permssble maxmum weght can be further lmted by the component manufacturers recommendatons for use. The frame of your bke s marked accordng to one of the followng symbols ndcatng the category your bke belongs to. If you are not sure about the category your bke belongs to, please contact our servce centre. Condton 0 Ths category s ntended for chldrens bcycles. Chldren should not rde near precpces, starcases or swmmng pools as well as on paths used by automotve mobles. In general, ths apples to bcycles wth wheel szes of 12 to 24 nches. Condton 1 Bkes of ths category are desgned for rdng on hard-surface roads where the wheels reman n permanent contact to the ground. These are n general road racng bcycles wth racng handlebars or straght handlebars, trathlon or tme tral bcycles. The rder s maxmum weght ncl. baggage should not exceed 120 kg. Under certan crcumstances ths permssble maxmum weght can be further lmted by the component manufacturers recommendatons for use. Condton 2 Bcycles of category 1 and bcycles desgned for well paved gravel paths and off-road trals wth a slght slope where a short loss of tyre contact wth the ground due to small steps can occur. Ths condton comprses urban and cty bcycles as well as cyclocross bkes wth road racng handlebars and cantlever or dsc brakes. Condton 3 Bkes of ths category comprse the bcycles of the categores 1 and 2 and are n addton sutable for rough and unpaved terrans. Sporadc jumps of a maxmum heght of approx. 60 cm are also ncluded n the feld of use of these bcycles. But nexperenced rders dong jumps of ths heght may land napproprately, thus ncreasng the actng forces sgnfcantly whch may result n damage and njures. Ths category s represented by MTB hardtals and full suspenson bcycles wth short suspenson travel. Condton 4 Ths category ncludes bkes of the categores 1 to 3. In addton, bcycles of ths category are sutable for very rough and partly blocked terran wth steep slopes and hgher speeds as a result thereof. Regular, moderate jumps by experenced rders are no problem for these bcycles. The regular and durable use of the bcycles on North Shore trals and n bke parks should, however, be excluded. Due to the hgher stresses, these bcycles should be checked for possble damage after every rde. Full suspenson bkes wth medum suspenson travel are typcal for ths category.

5 6 INTENDED USE BEFORE YOUR FIRST RIDE 7 Condton 5 Ths type of use stands for very challengng, hghly blocked and extremely steep terrans, whch can only be mastered by well-traned rders wth techncal sklls. Rather hgh jumps at very hgh speeds as well as the ntensve use of specfc, dentfed bke parks or downhll trals are typcal for ths category. In the case of these bcycles t must be consdered that a thorough check for possble damage s carred out after every rde. Prelmnary damage wth clearly nferor further stress can result n falure. A regular replacement of safety-relevant components should also be taken nto account. Wearng specal protectors s strongly recommended. Full suspenson bkes wth long suspenson travel as well as drt bkes are typcal for ths category. BEFORE YOUR FIRST RIDE 1. Have you ever rdden a mountan bke? Please note that rdng over rough terran requres concentraton, ftness and practce. Make yourself gradually famlar wth your new mountan bke n an unfrequented area and only approach the terran you want to bke on step by step. Attend a rdng technque course. For more nformaton vst www. canyon.com 2. Are you famlar wth the brake system? Canyon bkes are normally delvered wth the left brake lever operatng the front brake. Check whether the lever of the front brake s n the poston you are used to. If t s not, you wll need to tran to get used to the new confguraton, as nadvertent use of the front brake can throw you off your bke! Have the lever-to-brake assgnment changed by an expert. Too hard brakng wth front brake; do not mtate! Note that the assgnment of brake lever to! brake calper can vary from country to country. Check the brake assgnment. If t does not comply wth your habts, we recommend you havng an expert change the lever-to-brake assgnment!!! Canyon bkes are not approved for mountng chld carrers. Canyon bkes are not approved for towng tralers. Bkes wth carbon seat posts are not approved for mountng panner racks. The only way of rdng wth baggage s by usng a specal backpack. Due to the specfc ntended use, some drt bkes are ftted wth only one brake. Do not use the Canyon bke on a bcycle traner to whch t s attached n any way Canyon bkes are ntended to be only used! on free rollers (bcycle rollers wthout brake). Do not use the Canyon bke on a bcycle traner to whch t s attached n any way. Your new bke s equpped wth modern brakes whch may be far more powerful than those you are used to! Due to the specfc ntended use, some drt bkes are ftted wth only one brake. Be sure to frst practse usng the brakes off publc roads! Do approach the maxmum possble deceleraton gradually. For more nformaton about the brakes, read chapter The brake system. Deralleur gears 3. Are you famlar wth the type and functonng of the gears? If not, make yourself famlar wth the gears n a place clear of traffc. Make sure not to shft gears on the front and rear deralleur at the same tme and not to pedal wth too much force when shftng. For more nformaton about the gears, read chapter The gears. If you hold your MTB handlebars by the bar ends, you cannot reach the brake levers as quckly as you would from other postons, and your stoppng dstance therefore becomes longer. Look well ahead as you rde and be prepared for longer stoppng dstances.

Stand over the top tube of your bke and check whether there s enough clearance between the top tube and your crotch (at least one handbreath). If there s not, read the more detaled chapter of the manual further below or on the enclosed CD or contact our servce hotlne at +44 (0) Rdng wth a too bg frame may cause njures, when gettng off your bke quckly! Wth cross-country and marathon bkes the saddle should be set to a heght from whch you can just reach the pedal n ts lowest poston wth your heel. Check whether your toes reach to the floor when you are sttng on the saddle. Wth all mountan, enduro and freerde bkes the saddle s normally brought to a lower poston. A lower saddle poston s partcularly advsable when rdng downhll. For more nformaton about the saddle poston, read chapter Adjustng the Canyon bke to the rder. 5. Have you ever tred clpless or step-n pedals and the shoes they go wth? Before rdng wth clpless pedals for the frst tme, carefully practse lockng one shoe onto a pedal and dsengagng t whle the bke s statonary. Lean aganst a wall when practsng so that you do not topple over. Adjust the lockng and release mechansm, f necessary. Be sure to frst read the operatng nstructons that you wll fnd n the BkeGuard. For more nformaton about the pedals, read chapter The pedal systems. Checkng the clearance between top tube and crotch Shoes for step-n pedals 6. Note that you should only use your Canyon for ts ntended purpose! Mountan bkes ntended for cross-country and marathon use are not sutable for hard downhll rdes on blocked terran or jumps etc. For all mountan or enduro use we recommend our specal models. The Torque models are also sutable for freerdng. Please keep n mnd that though lookng easy the trcks of a professonal actually requre a lot of tranng and experence. For your own safety, do not overestmate your rdng abltes. In general, Canyon bkes are desgned for an overall load (rder and baggage) of 120 kg. Make sure not to exceed ths lmt. For more nformaton about the use, read chapter Intended use. 7. Are parts of your Canyon bke made of carbon? Please note that ths materal requres specal care and partcular use. In any case, be sure to read chapter Specal characterstcs of carbon. 8. If you have bought a suspenson bcycle, you should check the ar pressure of the suspenson fork. If necessary, use the pump ncluded n the Bke- Guard for the adjustment. An mproperly adjusted suspenson fork s lable to malfuncton or damage. In any case they wll mpar the performance of your bcycle as well as your safety whlst rdng. For more nformaton read chapters Suspenson fork and Full-suspenson. Rdng off-road Carbon Step-n pedal Full-suspenson bke A lack of practce when usng clpless pedals or too much sprng tenson n the mechansm can lead to a very frm connecton, from whch you cannot quckly step out! Rsk of an accdent! Canyon mountan bkes are hgh-end sports equpment, representng lghtweght constructon as pnnacle of engneerng. Also be a professonal when t comes to handlng of the materal. Msuse, unprofessonal assembly or nsuffcent servcng can render the racng machne unsafe. Rsk of an accdent!

7 10 BEFORE EVERY RIDE BEFORE EVERY RIDE 11 BEFORE EVERY RIDE CHECK THE FOLLOWING POINTS BEFORE EVERY RIDE: 1. Are the quck-release levers of the front and rear wheel, seat post and other components as well as of avalable thru axles properly closed? For more nformaton, read chapter How to use quck-releases and thru axles. 2. Are the tyres n good condton and do they have suffcent pressure? Spn the wheels to check whether the rms are true. Also look out for tyres wth ruptured sdes or broken axles or spokes whle you do ths. For more nformaton, read chapter The wheels - tyres, nner tubes and ar pressure. 3. Test the brakes whle standng by frmly pullng brake levers towards the handlebars. A pressure pont should be reached after the lever has only travelled a short dstance; the lever must, however, not touch the handlebars! Make sure no lqud leaks out from hydraulc (dsc) brakes. For more nformaton about the brakes, read chapter The brake system. Check the tyre pressure 4. If you ntend to rde on publc roads or n the dark, check the lghtng set, see chapter Legal requrements. 5. Let your Canyon bounce on the ground from a small heght. If there s any rattlng, see where t comes from. Check the bearngs and bolted connectons, f necessary. 6. Due to ther ntended use, freerde bkes, such as the Strve or the Torque, must wthstand partcular strans. If you are owner of such a bke, be sure to check t for mparments and materal fatgue, such as cracks, dents and bends, before every rde. 7. The major accessory for a successful cyclng tour s a small tool bag ftted underneath the saddle. The tool kt should nclude two plastc tyre levers, the most commonly used Allen keys, a spare tube, a tyre repar kt, your moble phone and a lttle cash. Do not forget a tyre pump mounted to the frame. 8. Take a sturdy lock wth you, f you ntend to leave your Canyon n a publc area. The only way to protect your Canyon aganst theft n a publc area s to lock t to an mmovable object! Never rde wthout lghtng n the dark Emergency kt You should not be able to pull the brake lever all the way to the handlebars Improperly closed quck-releases can cause bcycle components to come loose. Rsk of an accdent! Do not use your Canyon, f t fals on one of these ponts! To safe your Canyon from damage,! please observe the maxmum overall load and the regulatons regardng the transport of baggage and chldren gven n chapter Intended use. Furthermore, we recommend readng chapter Transport of your Canyon bke before transportng your Canyon by car or plane. Durng use your Canyon s undergong stress resultng from the surface of the road and through the rder s acton. Due to these dynamc loads, the dfferent parts of your bke react wth wear. Please check your Canyon regularly for wear marks as well as for scratches, dents, bent parts and ncpent crackng. Components that have passed ther normal servce lfe may suddenly fal. Have your Canyon nspected regularly so that components can be replaced, f necessary. 8 12 ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD 13 ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD Assemblng the bke from the BkeGuard s no wtchcraft, but you should proceed wth care and delberaton. Unprofessonal assembly can render the bke unsafe. CHECKING THE CONTENTS OF THE BIKEGUARD GENERAL INFORMATION ON MOUNTAIN BIKE AS- SEMBLY Your Canyon had been fully assembled at the factory and gven a test run. The bcycle s fully functonal wthout any further adjustments beng made once the assembly steps explaned below have been completed. After carryng out assembly work, always do a test rde n an unfrequented place or on a quet road. Frst we should lke to make you famlar wth the varous components of your Canyon. Unfold the front cover of your bcycle manual mountan bke. Here you wll fnd the llustraton of a Canyon bke showng all the essental components. Keep ths page folded out whle you are readng. Ths means that you can quckly fnd n the text the component that s beng referred to. The llustraton shows an arbtrary Canyon mountan bke ths s not what every bke wll look lke. Frst, open the BkeGuard. To do ths, only use a box cutter or a smlar knfe wth a very short blade. Never use any knd of knfe on the bcycle tself. The BkeGuard contans the assembled frameset wth the rear wheel mounted and all add-on parts as well as the front wheel that s sometmes packed separately n a wheel bag, the saddle wth seat post, whch may be connected wth a cable to a control unt to be mounted on the handlebars. In addton, the BkeGuard contans a box wth small parts (e.g. quck-release or thru axle, reflectors, possbly pedals) and the toolcase wth Canyon torque wrench ncl. bts, full suspenson pump, Canyon assembly paste and the bcycle manual mountan bke wth enclosed CD. If you have a bke wth 29 and 27.5 nch tyres, the box wth small parts and the toolcase may be stowed n uprght poston at one end of the BkeGuard. The followng secton gves you a concse descrpton of the assembly. In the event that you are nether sklled nor experenced n that knd of work, please read the more detaled chapters n your bcycle manual mountan bke; also observe the nstructons of the component manufacturers on the enclosed CD. Before your frst rde, carry out the checks descrbed n chapter Before every rde. It s best to use a workstand that holds the frame from nsde at three ponts or else ask someone to help whle you assemble your bke. Do not clamp a frame tube or a carbon seat! post of your Canyon n the holdng jaws of the workstand! Use a sutable alumnum seat post for clampng nstead. If you have a heght-adjustable seat post, do not clamp the bke on a movable part, but only on the bottom part whch s removed far enough. When nsertng or pullng out the heght-adjustable seat post, make sure to pull n or out the cable where t comes out of the frame to prevent any breakng of the cable. The easest and safest way to assemble the bke s when you use a workstand or ask someone to help you. Do not work on your Canyon wth a box cutter. You may damage the component or hurt yourself. Be sure to use scssors where needed. Share the pleasure that your new Canyon brngs and ask a helper to assst you n unpackng t from the BkeGuard and n assemblng t.

9 14 ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD 15 USING THE CANYON TORQUE WRENCH USING THE CANYON ASSEMBLY PASTE We regard the use of a torque wrench as essental so as to ensure the two parts can be fxed together securely and safely. Put the matchng bt nto the holder of the Canyon torque wrench. Insert the Allen key fully nto the screw head. Carbon fbre components are partcularly vulnerable to damage caused by excessve clampng force. Canyon assembly paste creates extra frcton between two surfaces, allowng the necessary torque value to be reduced by up to 30 %. It also retans ts effectveness n wet condtons and provdes maxmum protecton aganst corroson. Canyon assembly paste can be used for all carbon and alumnum connectons. It s deal for ths purpose, as t does not harden. Exceedng the maxmum torque at the clampng bolts (e.g. at the stem, seat post or seat post clamp) leads to an excessvely hgh clampng force. Ths can cause the component to fal and hence there s a hgh assocated rsk of accdents. In addton, the product guarantee would be null and vod n such a case. Screws or bolts that are too loose or are done up too tghtly can cause a falure and hence lead to an accdent. Always follow exactly the tghtenng torque detals from Canyon. Slowly turn the handle of the Canyon torque wrench. Once the bolt s gettng tght, the ponter moves over the scale. Stop the turnng movement as soon as the ponter reaches the number for the specfed torque. Assemble your Canyon usng the Canyon torque wrench enclosed wth the Bke- Guard. Ths s especally useful n the clampng areas of handlebars and stem, steerer tube and stem and seat post and seat tube,.e. three areas where too much clampng force can damage ether component, causng component falure or vodng the warranty. By reducng the clampng force, Canyon assembly paste releves stress on senstve carbon surfaces, preventng damage to fbres or frequent crackng of the carbon substructure. Make t a rule to use assembly paste on seat posts of mountan bkes to acheve a frm seat of the seat posts. Lowerng the seat post durng off-road use scratches the surface a lttle. Ths s normal wear and no reason for complant. If you want to adjust the seat post frequently, Canyon recommends that you mount a heght-adjustable seat post.

10 16 ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD 17 UNPACKING HOW TO MOUNT HEIGHT-ADJUSTABLE SEAT POSTS Pror to applyng Canyon assembly paste, remove drt partcles and lubrcant resdues from the surfaces to be treated. Apply a thn and even flm of Canyon assembly paste to the cleaned surfaces usng a brush or a chamos. Take out the box wth the small parts and put t asde. Remove the protectve cardboard at one end. Remove the toolcase wth the bcycle manual mountan bke and the tools from the small parts box. If your Canyon has a heght-adjustable seat post, mount the heght-adjustable seat post before lftng the Canyon out of the BkeGuard. The heght-adjustable seat post s ready-for-use connected by means of a cable runnng through the seat tube wth the control lever mounted at the handlebars. Undo the band wth Velcro fastener fxng the saddle and the seat post to the front wheel. Mount the components, as specfed. Use the Canyon torque wrench and never exceed the prescrbed maxmum tghtenng torque! Remove excessve Canyon assembly paste and re-seal the small sachet after use. Remove the protectve cap from the top end of the seat tube. Remove the protectve cardboard at the other end. In the BkeGuard the control lever of the heght-adjustable seat post s not necessarly mounted to the handlebars. Open the quck-release or the seat post bnder bolt at the seat tube. Read the chapter How to use quck-releases and thru axles n your bcycle manual mountan bke beforehand. Carefully place the seat post on the rear wheel. Take out the cardboard box wth the front wheel and put t asde. Carefully remove the protectve flm from the seat post. If you have a bke wth 29 and 27.5 nch tyres, the box wth small parts and the toolcase may be stowed n uprght poston at one end of the BkeGuard.

11 18 ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD 19 HOW TO MOUNT CONVENTIONAL SEAT POSTS Apply a lttle Canyon assembly paste to the bottom part of the seat post and nsde the seat tube or n the clampng area of the seat post. You should be able to nsert the seat post easly nto the frame wthout pressng or turnng. If you are not, loosen the seat post bnder bolt a lttle more. Brng the saddle nto algnment and close the quck-release or the seat post bnder bolt. Take care not to overtghten the seat post bnder bolt or quck-release. Remove the protectve flm from the saddle, f avalable. Remove the saddle and the seat post wth the front wheel packed n the cardboard box and put these parts carefully asde. Undo the band wth Velcro fastener fxng the saddle and the seat post to the front wheel and put these parts asde. Keep the seat post n one hand and take hold of the seat post cable where t comes out of the frame. Whle carefully nsertng the seat post wth one hand nto the seat tube, pull out the cable wth the other hand. Slde the seat post nto the seat tube to the desred mnmum saddle heght. Please note the MIN/MAX markng on the seat tube. Lft the frame carefully off the BkeGuard and make sure t stands safe. Ask your helper, f necessary, to hold the bke. Remove the toolcase wth the bcycle manual mountan bke and the tools from the small parts box. Make sure the cable of the heght-adjustable seat post does not break durng the! assembly. Be sure to read the notes gven n chapter! Adjustng the saddle to the correct heght as well as the permtted torques n chapter General notes on care and nspecton of your bcycle manual mountan bke and also follow the operatng nstructons of the component manufacturer on the enclosed CD. Keep the entre packagng materal as well as the BkeGuard n a dry place. If you ntend to shp your Canyon or to take t wth you on a trp, you wll have everythng at hand. The front wheel may be packed addtonally n a wheel bag.

12 20 ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD 21 MOUNTING THE HANDLEBARS Lft the frame ncludng add-on parts and rear wheel carefully off the BkeGuard and make sure t stands safe. Ask your helper, f necessary, to hold the bke. Slde the seat post nto the seat tube to the desred mnmum saddle heght. Please note the MIN/MAX markng on the seat tube. Brng the saddle nto algnment and close the quck-release or the seat post bnder bolt. Take care not to overtghten the seat post bnder bolt or quck-release. In packed condton the handlebars are not assembled, the stem s however assembled accurately. Do not make any changes to the stem. Undo the band wth Velcro fastener n the bottom area of the fork. Keep hold of the handlebars and undo the band wth Velcro fastener n the top area on the frame. Hold the handlebars tghtly whle dong ths so that they cannot drop and get damaged. Take the Canyon torque wrench and put the bt matchng the faceplate bolts nto the holder. Release the clampng bolts of the stem faceplate completely and remove the faceplate. Apply a lttle Canyon assembly paste to the bottom part of the seat post and nsde the seat tube or n the clampng area of the seat post. You should be able to nsert the seat post easly nto the frame wthout pressng or turnng. If you are not, loosen the seat post bnder bolt a lttle more. Remove the protectve flm from the saddle, f avalable. Be sure to read the notes gven n chapter! Adjustng the saddle to the correct heght as well as the permtted torques n chapter General notes on care and nspecton of your bcycle manual mountan bke and also follow the operatng nstructons of the component manufacturer on the enclosed CD. Turn the stem ncludng fork towards the front,.e. n drecton of moton. Make sure the cables and lnes are not twsted. Let the handlebars carefully hang down or ask your helper, f necessary, to hold the handlebars. Squeeze out some Canyon assembly paste and apply a thn layer of carbon assembly paste on the nner sde of the faceplate as well as n the clampng area of the stem body.

13 22 ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD Poston the handlebars by means of the markng accurately centred n the stem clamp. Make sure the bowden cables and the lnes are not twsted or bent, but run n a smooth curve to the cable stops or the brake. Screwng n the conventonal Aheadset -stem wth faceplate Make sure the upper and lower clampng slots between faceplate and stem body are parallel and dentcal n wdth. Release the clampng bolts, f necessary, and re-tghten them slghtly and evenly. Screwng n Canyon Aheadset -stems wth faceplate Tghten the lower bolt also to a tghtenng torque of 3 Nm. Once t fts, tghten the bolts evenly and n a cross pattern accordng to the marked torque (8 Nm) by usng the Canyon torque wrench. Please note that ths torque value only apples to the combnaton of the Canyon stem wth the Canyon handlebars. MOUNTING THE IMPACT PROTECTION UNIT (IPU) Make sure the stem ncludng handlebars shows n drecton of moton. Poston the IPU on the top tube wth the rounded sde pontng n drecton of moton and the bevelled part to the rear levellng off wth the top tube. Some Canyon models wth carbon frame are ftted wth an Impact Protecton Unt or IPU, whch s an end stop. Ths IPU prevents the handlebars or ts fttngs from touchng the top tube. Whether or not your Canyon has an IPU can be found out by the two thread holes on the top tube drectly behnd the headset. Poston the faceplate on the handlebars. Retghten the clampng bolts of the faceplate evenly n a cross pattern untl they lghtly hold the handlebars n place. Poston the faceplate on the handlebars. Brng the handlebars roughly nto the adequate poston so that the brake levers slghtly pont downwards. If your Canyon shows these holes, take out the Impact Protecton Unt wth the two Allen bolts from the box wth the small parts. Insert both bolts nto the holes and turn them wth your fnger by two to three turns. You should be able to turn the bolts nearly wthout resstance. Brng the handlebars roughly nto the adequate poston so that the brake levers slghtly pont downwards. At ths stage the mountan bke s not yet ready-for-use. Carry out the fnal adjustment and fxng of the handlebars, as descrbed further below n chapter Adjustng and mountng the handlebars. Tghten the two upper bolts to the tghtenng torque of 3 Nm by usng the Canyon torque wrench. The slot should be fully closed n the end, the faceplate should be flush wth the body. If necessary, you have to loosen the lower two bolts a lttle. Rdng wthout IPU can make the handlebars or the handlebar fttngs collde wth! the top tube. The frame can sustan damage. Once you have turned both bolts so far, take the Canyon torque wrench ncludng matchng bt. Tghten both bolts untl the bolt heads are flush n the countersunk surface of the IPU. Fnsh by tghtenng both bolts to a torque value of 3 Nm.

14 24 ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD 25 ADDITIONAL STEPS IN CASE OF A HEIGHT-ADJUSTA- BLE SEAT POST OPTION 1: SRAM or Avd brake and Shmano shft lever OPTION 2: SRAM or Avd brake and SRAM shft lever The control lever of the heght-adjustable seat post s already mounted to the handlebars or not mounted. If t s not yet mounted, remove the protectve flm from ths unt. The shft lever s mounted to the handlebars, the brake lever however not. Remove the protectve flm from the rght brake lever. Tghten the control lever together wth the rght brake lever to the handlebars. Nether the shft lever nor the brake lever s mounted to the handlebars. The control lever clamp s addtonally ftted wth a connectng pece named Matchmaker. The bolt for the assembly of the shft lever to the Matchmaker s ether n the Matchmaker tself or loosely screwed nto the shft lever. Tghten the bolt to the tghtenng torque of 5-6 Nm specfed by SRAM. Remove the protectve flm from the rght shft lever. Undo the fxng bolt from the shft lever. Take the matchng bt from the toolcase and release the Torx screw from the control lever. Brng the brake lever nto the same poston as the left brake lever assembled by the manufacturer. Tghten the bolt to the tghtenng torque of 5-6 Nm specfed by SRAM. Remove the protectve flm from the rght brake lever. Tghten the control lever together wth the rght brake lever to the handlebars. Assemble the shft lever to the Matchmaker. Tghten the bolt to the tghtenng torque of Nm specfed by SRAM. Brng the brake lever nto the same poston as the left brake lever. Use the Canyon torque wrench and do not exceed the maxmum tghtenng torque! Do not use brute force when changng the poston of the brake lever and the control lever of the adjustable seat post. There s only one poston whch allows easy reach of the bolt.

15 26 ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD 27 OPTION 3: Shmano brake and Shmano shft lever MOUNTING THE FRONT WHEEL Remove the front wheel from the protectve cardboard and from the wheel bag, f avalable. Front wheel wth quck-release The brake lever and the shft lever are mounted to the handlebars. Mount the control lever to the handlebars on the nner sde of the brake and shft lever clamps. Screw the bolt wthout tghtenng t, so that the control lever can stll be turned and shfted. Release the bolt of the adjacent brake lever clamp and turn the brake lever downwards. Remove the protectve flm from the fork, f avalable. It s recommended that you remove the protectve materal n general by hand. If that s not possble, t s best to use scssors. Do not use a box cutter. Take the quck-release for the front wheel out of the small parts box. Release the counternut and remove one of the sprngs from the quck-release. Remove the transport locks from the front wheel brake. Poston the lever wthn easy reach. Now you can tghten the bolt of the control lever wth the Canyon torque wrench. Insert the quck-release nto the hollow front wheel axle. Tghten the bolt to the tghtenng torque of 5-6 Nm specfed by SRAM. Turn the brake lever upwards and brng t nto the same poston as the other one. Tghten the bolt to the tghtenng torque of 6-8 Nm specfed by Shmano. If your Canyon has dsc brakes, check before mountng the wheel, whether the brake pads rest snugly n ther seats nto the brake callper body. Ths s the case, when the gap between the brake pads s parallel. Make sure there s one sprng on ether sde of the hub. When mountng the sprngs on ether sde of the quck-release, make sure ther small-dameter ends face the hub. The quck-release lever s mounted to the left sde,.e. opposte the chan drve.

16 28 ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD 29 Front wheel wth thru axle Tghten the counternut of the quck-release by no more than two full turns. Read up on quck-releases n chapter How to use the quck-releases and thru axles n your bcycle manual mountan bke; also observe the nstructons of the component manufacturer on the enclosed CD. Make sure the front wheel s accurately centred between the fork blades. Make sure the quck-release lever and the drop-out safety-tabs are properly closed. After mountng the wheel and tghtenng the quck-release pull the brake lever several tmes and spn the wheel subsequently. The rotor must not drag on the brake callper and normally not on the brake pads. Take the thru axle for the front wheel out of the small parts box. Rock Shox Maxle and Maxle Lte thru-axle system 15 or 20 mm (e.g. Revelaton, Reba, SID, Lyrk) Make sure the quck-release lever s completely open and les n the axle recess. As soon as the axle thread engages wth the thread of the left fork leg, close the axle by turnng t clockwse. Durng the frst rotatons you should be able to rotate the thru axle nearly wthout resstance. Mount the front wheel and make sure you gude the rotor between the brake pads carefully. Close the quck-release and verfy that the wheel s securely fxed. Read the chapter How to use quck-releases and thru axles n your bcycle manual mountan bke beforehand. New brake pads of dsc brakes have to be! bedded n, before they reach ther optmum brakng performance. For more nformaton read chapter The brake system n your bcycle manual mountan bke. If your bke s equpped wth a Maxle thru-axle system wth quck-release lever, put the front wheel nto the fork and mount the rotor nto the brake callper. Brng the front wheel nto the rght poston between the drop-outs and slde the axle wth open Maxle quck-release lever from the rght sde through the drop-out and the hub. Now turn the lever forcefully clockwse untl the axle s hand-tght. Make sure the quck-release lever does not slp out of the axle recess durng tghtenng. Fnsh by closng the Maxle thru-axle quck-release lever lke a usual quck-release lever. The quck-release lever should not stand out to the front and should ft snugly aganst the lower leg.

Close the Maxle thru-axle quck-release lever lke a usual quck-release lever. Put the front wheel nto the fork and mount the rotor at the same tme nto the brake callper. Brng the front wheel nto the rght poston between the dropouts and slde the axle wth open E-Thru quck-release lever from the left sde through the drop-out and the hub. Close the E-Thru quck-release lever lke a usual quck-release lever. From the start of the closng movement up to about the frst half of ts travel the lever should move very easly wthout clampng the wheel, whereas over the second half of ts travel the force needed to move t should ncrease consderably. Towards the end of ts travel the lever should be very hard to move. In ts end poston the quck-release lever should be tght so that t can no longer be turned. Make sure the quck-release lever does not stand out to the front or to the sde. The best closng poston s n nearly uprght poston n front of the lower leg. Rock Shox Maxle Lte thru-axle system 15 mm (e.g. Pke, from model year 2014) The new Maxle Lte system used at present only wth Pke dffers from the more known Maxle system n ts handlng. The handlng s nearly dentc to that of the Fox E-Thru system. Put the front wheel nto the fork and mount the rotor at the same tme nto the brake callper. Brng the front wheel nto the rght poston between the dropouts and slde the axle wth open Maxle Lte quck-release lever from the rght sde through the drop-out and the hub. To mount the front wheel open both quck-release levers n the bottom area of both fork legs. Put the front wheel nto the fork and mount the rotor at the same tme nto the brake callper. As soon as the axle thread engages wth the thread of the left fork leg, close t by turnng t clockwse. Durng the frst rotatons you should be able to rotate the thru axle nearly wthout resstance. Tghten the axle untl t s hand-tght. Re-fold the lever of the thru axle. Measure the saddle heght of your prevous bcycle from the mddle of the bottom bracket up to the top edge of the saddle n the mddle of the saddle. Then transfer the saddle heght to your new Canyon. Slde the seat post nto the seat tube to the desred saddle heght. Brng the saddle nto algnment and do not overtghten the quck-release or the seat post bnder bolt,.e. do not exceed the permssble maxmum torque. Use the Canyon torque wrench. Remove the protectve flm from the saddle, f avalable. Brng the front wheel nto the rght poston between the drop-outs and slde the axle from the rght sde through the drop-out and the hub. Unfold the lever from the axle. Check the tght ft of whatever wheel fastenng system after a few klometres (mles) or hours of use, at the latest however after 4 hours or 80 km (50 mles). A loose wheel fastenng can throw the rder off hs bke wth unforeseeable consequences for lfe and lmb. Close both quck-release levers. From the start of the closng movement up to about the frst half of ts travel the levers should move very easly wthout clampng the wheel, whereas over the second half of ts travel the force needed to move t should ncrease consderably. Towards the end of ts travel you should clearly feel resstance. Use, f necessary, the palm of your hand whle your fngers pull on an mmovable part, such as the fork leg, but not on a spoke or the rotor. Be sure to read the notes gven n chapter! 19 34 ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD 35 ADJUSTING AND MOUNTING THE HANDLEBARS Make the adjustments of the handlebars wth the front wheel mounted and the tyre nflated to the sutable pressure. The brake levers of a ready-for-use mountan bke pont slghtly downwards. When you st n the saddle wth your fngers on the brake levers the back of your hands should form a straght lne wth your forearms. Use the Canyon torque wrench and fnsh by tghtenng the clampng bolts n cross pattern. Do not exceed the maxmum tghtenng torques mostly prnted on the stem! MOUNTING THE PEDALS Before mountng the pedals, check the markng on the pedal axles frst. R stands for rght pedal and L for left pedal. Note that the left pedal has a left-handed thread that has to be tghtened contrary to the drecton you are accustomed to,.e. antclockwse. Screw each pedal manually nto the thread of ts crank by two to three full turns. Contnue by usng a pedal spanner to tghten the pedals frmly. Bar ends on mountan bkes are usually ftted slghtly angled. Your hands should rest on them wth your wrsts relaxed and not turned outward too far. Canyon mountan bkes can be ftted wth standard pedals of the major brands. Apply a thn layer of standard assembly grease on the pedal threads before screwng n the pedals. Some pedal types have to be tghtened wth an Allen key. Assemble your Canyon usng the Canyon torque wrench enclosed wth the Bke- Guard. Check the relable ft of the pedals after about 100 km (60 mles). The pedals can come loose, and ths can destroy the thread and throw the rder off hs bke. Also check the relable ft of the other bolts accordng to the prescrbed tghtenng torques.

20 36 ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD ASSEMBLY FROM THE BIKEGUARD 37 HOW TO INFLATE THE SUSPENSION FORK ADD-ON PARTS MAKING YOUR CANYON FIT FOR PUB- LIC ROADS Before transport the suspenson fork was completely deflated. The suspenson fork has to be flled wth the proper ar pressure. Remove the cap of your suspenson fork. Inflate the suspenson fork wth the specal pump enclosed wth the BkeGuard accordng to the recommendatons on the sprng rate of the fork manufacturer. You wll fnd the operatng nstructons of the suspenson fork manufacturer on the enclosed CD. Inflate the rear shock wth the specal pump enclosed wth the BkeGuard accordng to the recommendatons of the rear shock manufacturer. You wll fnd the operatng nstructons of the rear shock manufacturer on the enclosed CD. Fx the whte reflector to the handlebars and the red reflector to the seat post and mount a bell. Inflate both tyres to the maxmum pressure ndcated on the sde of the tyres. Fnsh the assembly by carryng out thoroughly the tests descrbed n chapter Before your frst rde. The rotor must not drag heavly on the brake callper and normally not on the brake pads. Spn both wheels to make sure they run true.! New brake pads of dsc brakes have to be bedded n. Check the proper functonng of the gears. Shft through all gears and make sure the rear deralleur does not collde wth the spokes, when the chan runs on the largest sprocket. Your seat post must go nto the frame as a mnmum to as far as underneath the top tube and up to the MIN/MAX markng of the seat post. Never rde your Canyon f the Mn/MAX markng of the seat post s vsble. After the assembly and the checkng, always do a test rde n an unfrequented place or on a quet road. Wrong assembly or mproper adjustments that become apparent n road traffc or durng off-road use can make you lose control of your Canyon! Check the relable ft of all bolts once agan accordng to the prescrbed tghtenng torques after 100 to 300 km (60 to 180 mles). 22 40 PACKING QUICK-RELEASES AND THRU AXLES 41 PACKING YOUR CANYON BIKE If you pack your Canyon, e.g. to send t n for servcng to our workshop, or f you want to take t wth you on holdays, you must bear n mnd a few thngs to brng your bke safe and sound to destnaton. Your BkeGuard contans the packng nstructons How to pack your mountan bke. Strctly follow these nstructons, whenever you pack your bke. Our packng nstructons that wll help you pack your Canyon step-by-step are also posted at our webste For travellng wth your bke by plane pack your bke ether nto the Canyon BkeGuard or use a sutable bke case, e.g. the Canyon BkeShuttle. For a transport by car be sure to secure your bke approprately n order to avod any shftng nsde the car. If you are n doubt or f you have any questons, read the more detaled chapter of the manual further below or on the enclosed CD or contact our servce hotlne at +44 (0) Always secure the bcycle or bcycle components when puttng t/them nto the nteror of your car. Parts shftng around can mpar your safety. The Canyon BkeShuttle The Canyon BkeGuard Most clamps of bke carrer systems are! potental sources of damage to large-dameter frame tubes! As a result thereof carbon frames may fal abruptly durng use, alumnum frames are susceptble to dents. Sutable, specal-purpose models are, however, avalable n the car accessory trade. HOW TO USE QUICK- RELEASES AND THRU AXLES Although the use of quck-releases s very easy, they have repeatedly been the cause of accdents as a result of a wrong handlng. Quck-release retenton mechansms essentally consst of two manpulable parts: The hand lever on one sde of the hub whch creates a clampng force va a cam when you close t. The tghtenng nut on the other sde of the hub wth whch to set the ntal tenson on the threaded rod. HOW TO SECURELY MOUNT THE WHEEL Open the quck-release. You should now be able to read OPEN on the lever. Move the lever back, as f to close t. Now you should be able to read CLOSE on the outsde of the lever. From the start of the closng movement up to about the frst half of ts travel the lever should move very easly,.e. wthout clampng the wheel. Over the second half of ts travel, the force you need to move t, should ncrease consderably. Towards the end of ts travel the lever should be very hard to move. Use the ball of your thumb whle your fngers pull on an mmovable part such as the fork or frame, but not on a rotor or spoke, to push t n all the way. In ts end poston the lever should be parallel to the bke,.e. t should not stck out to the sde. The lever must le close to the frame so that t cannot be opened accdentally. To check whether the lever s securely locked try to turn t whle t s closed. Open the quck-release lever Close the quck-release lever Improperly mounted wheels may throw you off your bcycle or result n serous accdents! Never rde a bcycle wthout havng frst checked whether the wheels are securely fastened! A wheel that comes loose whlst rdng wll throw you off your bcycle! In the event your Canyon has not been! packed for dspatch accordng to the enclosed packng nstructons, you have no rght to clam refund of repar costs for possbly occurrng transport damage from Canyon Bcycles GmbH. When takng your bke by car, make sure to remove all parts from your bke (tools, panner bags, chld carrers etc.) whch mght come loose durng transport and cause an accdent. If your bcycle s equpped wth quck releases, be sure to lock the frame to an mmovable object together wth the wheels when you leave t outsde.

23 42 QUICK-RELEASES AND THRU AXLES QUICK-RELEASES AND THRU AXLES 43 If you can turn the lever around, the wheel s not securely fastened. Open the lever agan and screw the tghtenng nut clockwse by half a turn to ncrease the ntal tenson. Close the lever agan and check t agan for tghtness. If the lever can no longer be turned, t s properly fastened. Fnally lft the bke a few centmetres from the ground so that the wheel s suspended and ht the tyre from above. If t s properly fastened, the wheel wll reman frmly fxed n the drop-outs of the frame. If your seat post s equpped wth a quck-release mechansm, check whether the saddle s frmly fxed by tryng to twst t relatve to the frame. Closng the quck-release wth the ball of your thumb HOW TO MOUNT THRU-AXLE WHEELS Thru axles are mounted when the bcycle has to wthstand hgh stress occurrng e.g. durng freerdng, downhll rdng etc. or jumps. They provde suspenson forks wth a sutable stffness. There s a wde range of thru-axle systems avalable now. Some systems are tghtened wth quck-releases. Other systems may requre specal tools for assembly or dsassembly. If you are n doubt or f you have any questons, please contact our servce hotlne +44 (0) For more detals on the dfferent thru-axle systems Rock Shox Maxle and Maxle Lte thru-axle system 15 or 20 mm Rock Shox Maxle and Maxle Lte thru-axle system 15 or 20 mm Fox E-Thru 15 mm Rock Shox Maxle and Maxle Lte thru-axle system 15 mm Fox 20 mm Fox E-Thru 15 mm Try twstng the saddle relatve to the frame see chapter Assembly from the BkeGuard further above n ths manual. Make sure the levers of both quckreleases are always on the left sde of your Canyon (opposte the chan sde). Ths wll help you to avod mountng the front wheel the wrong way round. Wth RockShox Maxle thru axle systems the Maxle quck-release lever s always on the rght sde. If your bke has dsc brakes, you should on no account replace the standard quck-release wth a lghtweght substtute. As an ant-theft measure you can replace the quck-releases by specal locks. They can only be opened and closed wth a specal, coded key or an Allen key. If you are n doubt or f you have any questons, please contact our servce hotlne +44 (0) ! To mount the axle use only the tools recommended by the manufacturer. Make t a! rule to use a torque wrench. Tghten carefully by approachng the prescrbed maxmum torque n small steps (0.5 Nm ncrements) whlst constantly checkng the proper ft of the component. Never exceed the maxmum tghtenng torque ndcated by the manufacturer! A too tght fxng of the axle can damage the axle or the fork leg. Fox 20 mm Manufacturers of thru-axle systems delver ther products usually wth detaled op- eratng nstructons. Read them carefully before removng the wheel or dong any mantenance work.

24 44 ADD-ON PARTS AND CHANGES CARBON 45 WHAT TO BEAR IN MIND WHEN ADDING COMPONENTS OR MAKING CHANGES? Canyon bkes are sport machnes whch are ftted accordng to the respectve usage. Please note that the mountng of mudguards or such lke may mpar the functonng and hence the safety whlst rdng. Before buyng and mountng any accessory, please check whether ths partcular accessory part matches wth your Canyon. Wth addtonal bells, horns or lghtng accessores, nform yourself thoroughly whether they are permtted and tested and accordngly approved for use on publc roads. Battery/accumulator-operated lghts have to be marked wth the wavy lne and the letter K (see chapter Legal requrements ). If you want to mount a panner rack or a chld seat or traler, please read chapter Intended use beforehand to make sure whether t s permtted. If a mountng s permtted, n general, please contact our servce hotlne at +44 (0) and ask for sutable models. Only perform jobs you are absolutely sure of. Handlebars, stems and forks should only be replaced by a sklled mechanc. Be sure to follow the operatng of the accessory manufacturer n any case. When mountng other components and accessores, t s your responsblty to mount the components approprately. Brng your Canyon to our servce workshop, f you have the slghtest doubt. Canyon wth mudguards Panner rack Retroftted accessores, such as mudguards, panner racks etc., can mpar the functonng of your Canyon. We therefore advse you to use accessores from our product range. Ths wll ensure you use matchng components. Components that come loose or break off as a result of mproper mountng can cause serous accdents. Safety relevant bolts must be tghtened to ther specfed torques. In case of any questons regardng com ponent assembly, compatblty or f you want to make any changes, read the more detaled chapter of the manual further below or on the enclosed CD or contact our servce hotlne at +44 (0) SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF CARBON Carbon fbre renforced plastc, also referred to as carbon (or CRP), has a number of specal characterstcs compared to conventonal lghtweght materals. Havng some knowledge of these characterstcs s mportant so that you can enjoy your hgh-qualty Canyon for many years and have full confdence n ts materal. Carbon fbre renforced plastc has proved ts value n road racng wth numerous wns. Components made of ths materal are extremely lghtweght and - presupposng proper desgn, processng and treatment - of outstandng strength and stress resstance. However, there s one partcular drawback of ths materal ts brttleness. Therefore, when subjected to stress t does not undergo permanent deformaton, even though ts nner structure may have sustaned damage. In the extreme case, the fbres may separate, thus resultng n the so-called delamnaton and reducng the strength propertes of the component. In contrast to steel or alumnum, carbon components that have sustaned damage to ther nner fbres as a result of excessve stress wll show no outwardly vsble deformaton. Carbon components that have been subjected to overstress are therefore lable to fal durng use, possbly causng an accdent wth unforeseeable consequences. If you have had a crtcal ncdent wth your bke, we advse you to have the relevant component nspected by our servce workshop, or better stll, the whole Canyon. Always park your Canyon carefully and make sure t does not topple over. Carbon frames and parts may already sustan damage by smply topplng over. Carbon Be attentve durng rdng. If your carbon component produces any creakng, ths may ndcate a materal defect. Stop usng your bke and contact our servce hotlne to dscuss the steps to be taken. For your own safety, never ask for CRP components to be repared! Damaged carbon components should be replaced mmedately and prevented from beng used by anyone else. Carbon components should never be exposed to hgh temperatures, as occurrng durng powder coatng or enamellng. The heat generated by these processes may destroy the component. Do not leave carbon tems n a car n drect sunlght for prolonged perods or near sources of heat. Most clamps of bke carrer systems are! potental sources of damage to large-dameter frame tubes! As a result thereof carbon frames may suddenly fal durng use. Sutable, specal-purpose models are avalable n the car accessory trade. Make sure the maxmum overall weght of rder, baggage (rucksack) and bcycle does not exceed 100 kg. Carbon wheels are generally not approved for traler towng!

25 46 CARBON FREERIDE BIKES 47 CARE INSTRUCTIONS Components made of carbon renforced fbre should be cleaned wth a soft rag and clear water, to whch a lttle dsh lqud may be added, f necessary. Tough stans of ol or grease can be removed wth a petroleum-based cleanng agent. Never use degreasng agents contanng acetone, trchloroethlyene, methyl chlorde etc., solvents or non-neutral, chemcal or solvent-contanng cleanng agents that could attack the surface! You can use car wax to protect the surface and make t shne. Polshng agents or varnsh cleaner contan sold consttuents that mght attack the surface. Do not combne carbon handlebars wth bar ends, unless they have been specfcally approved. Do not shorten carbon handlebars or clamp the brake levers and shfters further n the mddle than ndcated or needed. Rsk of breakage! Cleansng wth water and a soft rag Specal pads protect carbon from damage Protect the exposed areas of your carbon! frame (e.g. the undersde of the down tube) wth specal pads aganst rubbng cables or stone chps. SPECIAL FEATURES OF FREERIDE BIKES Freerdng, fourcross, dual slalom and downhll rdng are among the most challengng sports that you can perform. Jumps, rdng the stars, downhll races and sharp bends n dffcult or extremely rough terran etc. are an undue stress for rder and materal and requre a hghly durable bcycle wth full-suspenson. A cross-country, tourng or marathon mountan bke would fal under such undue stress and cause a serous accdent. Even though the above-mentoned specalzed types of bcycles are bult for sport cyclng and hard use, ther resstance to stress s lmted. In partcular the followng actons may cause an undue stress for the materal and result n a falure: Incorrect jumps on sharp edges, jumps wth a landng on the front wheel, too short jumps or trcks that are not completed before the landng Landng on the counter slope or between two slopes; on flat terran jumps wth rotaton crossways to the track or wth hands not on the handlebars/feet off the pedals Torque Playzone Always protect yourself wth sutable clothng Do not clamp a carbon frame or seat post! n the holdng jaws of a workstand! The parts may sustan damage. Mount a sturdy (alumnum) seat post nstead and use ths to clamp the frame, or use a work stand that holds the frame at three ponts nsde the frame trangle or that clamps the fork and bottom bracket shell. Lke all extremely lghtweght components, carbon components have a lmted servce lfe. The handlebars, the seat post, the carbon wheels and the stem should therefore be replaced at regular ntervals e.g. every 3 years or after 15,000 km (9,300 mles), dependng on frequency and ntensty of use even f they have not been nvolved n accdents or smlar ncdents. Avod greasng carbon components.! Grease would penetrate the surface of the carbon materal, reducng the coeffcent of frcton and hence mparng the stablty of the clampng jont when tghtened wthn the permssble torque range. Once greased carbon fbre may never ever be fxed n a secure and safe way agan! Check your carbon component regularly, e.g. when cleanng your bke, for external damage, such as notches, cracks, dents, dscolouratons etc. If the rag gets caught on somethng, ths area must be examned. Stop usng your Canyon. Contact mmedately our servce hotlne at +44 (0) Be sure to also avod the followng, as ths would put too much stress on the materal resultng n premature wear or falure: Undue stress for the chan by rdng wth too low chan tenson Inapproprate grndng (sldng on chan or chanrng) Undue stress for the wheels by rdng wth too low ar pressure Undue stress for the frame and bcycle parts by rdng wth a too soft suspenson or sldng on frame and drop-outs The components of freerde bkes are exposed to hgh stress. Check the components of your freerde bke annually and replace the components, f necessary. Drt, fourcross, dual slalom, downhll and freerde bcycles are true-bred sports bcycles. For your own safety, do not overestmate your cyclng sklls. Please note that though lookng easy the trcks of a professonal are hazardous to your lfe and lmb. Always protect yourself wth approprate and sutable clothng.

26 48 FREERIDE BIKES AFTER AN ACCIDENT 49 ADJUSTING THE SADDLE TO THE CORRECT HEIGHT Drt, freerde, dual slalom and downhll bcycles etc. requre dfferent saddle adjustments, accordng to the specfc use. The seatng poston cannot be capared to that on other bcycles; t s maxmum control and movablty that counts when rdng one of the aforementoned bcycles. When you set off for a long cyclng tour, the saddle should be set to a heght whch gves maxmum pedallng comfort and effcency. When pedallng, the ball of your bg toe should be postoned above the centre of the pedal spndle. Wth your feet n ths poston you should not be able to stretch your legs completely straght at the lowest pont, otherwse your pedallng wll become awkward. You can check the heght of your saddle n the followng, smple way. Ths s best done wearng flat-soled shoes. St on the saddle and put one of your heels on the pedal at ts lowest pont. In ths poston your leg should be fully stretched and your hps should reman horzontal. For freerdng, downhll racng etc. the saddle s set to a very low heght wth a rearward tlt. Ask your traner, a competent person n your club or contact our servce hotlne at +44 (0) for the correct seatng poston. For detaled nstructons on how to adjust the saddle, read chapter Adjustng the Canyon bke to the rder. Strve For freerdng etc. the saddle s normally adjusted wth a rearward tlt AFTER AN ACCIDENT 1. Check whether the wheels are stll frmly fxed n the drop-outs and whether the rms are stll centred wth respect to the frame or fork. Spn the wheels to make sure they run true. If the wheel vsbly wobbles, t must be centred. For more nformaton, read chapters The brake system and The wheels. 2. Check whether the handlebars and stem are nether bent nor ruptured and whether they are level and uprght. Check whether the stem s frmly fxed n the fork by tryng to twst the handlebars relatve to the front wheel. Also, brefly lean on the brake levers to make sure the handlebars are frmly fxed n the stem. For more nformaton, see chapters Adaptng the Canyon bke to the rder and The headset. 3. See whether the chan stll runs on the chanrng and sprockets. If your bke fell over to the chan sde, check that the gears stll functon properly. Ask somebody to lft the bke by the saddle, then gently swtch through all the gears. Pay partcular attenton when swtchng to the small gears, makng sure the rear deralleur does not get too close to the spokes as the chan clmbs onto the larger sprockets. If the deralleur or the drop-outs have been bent, ths can cause the rear deralleur to collde wth the spokes rsk of accdent! Check the relable attachment of the wheels Try twstng the handlebars relatve to the front wheel In the case of heght adjustable seat posts, such as the Reverb from RockShox, the heght s adjusted by pressng a button on the handlebars. Read the operatng nstructons on the enclosed CD. Heght adjustable seat post Look from the rear at the rear gear cluster and check whether the pulleys are perfectly algned wth the teeth of the adequate sprocket A lower saddle s advsable n partcular for steep downhll rdng by mountan bke. Prolonged rdng wth a low saddle may cause knee trouble. After only one season these types of mountan bke may be so worn that essental and/or supportng parts wll already need replacng. Have bcycles of ths type thoroughly checked at least every 3 to 4 months. Please note the partculars gven n chapter Specal characterstcs of carbon, as well.

27 50 AFTER AN ACCIDENT FRAMESETS ASSEMBLY 51 Ths n turn can destroy the rear deralleur, the rear wheel or the frame. Check the front deralleur, as a damaged front deralleur can throw off the chan, thus nterruptng the power tran of the bcycle (see chapter The gears ). 4. Make sure the saddle s not twsted usng the top tube or the bottom bracket shell as a reference. 5. Lft your bke up a few centmetres and let t bounce onto the ground. If ths causes any sort of nose, search for loosened bolts. 6. Fnally, take a good look at the whole bke to detect any deformaton, dscolouraton or cracks. Check that the rear deralleur keeps clear of the spokes FRAMESETS ASSEMBLY TECHNICAL DATA Canyon offers the hgh-qualty carbon and alumnum frames as bare frames for ndvdual fttng wth components. Forks for Canyon mountan bke frames must be selected wth due consderaton to sprng travel. If you are n doubt, please call our servce hotlne at +44 (0) Canyon Nerve frameset Only rde back very carefully by takng the shortest possble way, f your bke went through ths check wthout any doubt. Do not accelerate or brake hard and do not rde your bke out of the saddle. If you are n doubt about the performance of your bke, have yourself pcked up by car, nstead of rskng anythng. Back home the bke must be examned thoroughly. Damaged parts must be repared or replaced. Please read the more detaled chapters of the manual further below or on the enclosed CD or contact our servce hotlne at +44 (0) Carbon components whch have suffered from an mpact force as well as bent parts made of alumnum may brake wthout prevous warnng. They must not be repared,.e. straghtened, as the rsk of breakage would stll reman mmnent. Ths apples n partcular to forks, handlebars, stems, crank sets, seat posts and pedals. If n doubt, t s always the better choce to have these parts replaced, as your safety comes frst. Make sure the saddle s not twsted usng the top tube as a reference Replace lghtweght components after an accdent for your own safety The person completng and mountng the add-on parts must therefore ensure that all components are compatble and properly mounted. There s a vast varety of avalable add-on parts, makng t mpossble for Canyon to cover every concevable opton n ths manual. Canyon cannot be held responsble for any component combnaton possble. We strongly advse you to carefully read the component manufacturers operatng nstructons, as well. Falures n selectng bke components can, n prncple, result n your Canyon beng unsafe. We therefore advse you to have your bke assembled by a sklled mechanc or by our servce centre. For your own safety, never do any work unless you feel absolutely sure about t. Have your Canyon assembled at our workshop! Ths manual may requre further explana ton, dependng on the experence and/or sklls of the person dong the work, and some jobs may requre addtonal (specal) tools, such as specal dsmantlng tools or addtonal operatng nstructons. Do not clamp the frame onto an assembly! stand by ts tubes! Ths could cause damage to the thn-walled tubes. Frst mount a sturdy alumnum seat post and use ths to clamp the frame, or use an assembly stand whch holds the frame at three ponts from nsde or whch holds the fork and bottom bracket shell.

28 52 FRAMESETS ASSEMBLY FRAMESETS ASSEMBLY 53 Frames are delvered ready for assembly,.e. wth threads cut and bearng seats and seat tube faced. There s no need for any machnng on the frame. Do not modfy the frame or any of ts attachments, e.g. the adjustable cable gudes etc., by flng, borng or the lke. Mount all components onto the frame by usng hghgrade assembly grease (except for carbon seat posts, stems on forks wth a carbon steerer tube and all seat posts on carbon frames). Ths helps to avod corroson. If you omt the grease, you may fnd t mpossble to dsassemble your Canyon at a later date. Canyon bkes are delvered wth the headset and the fork already mounted. Always observe the tghtenng torques ndcated HEADSET All frames are delvered wth fully mounted bearng cups and an ntegrated headset. SUSPENSION FORKS Canyon mountan bke frames can be ftted wth a suspenson fork of your choce. Note that the effectve length of the fork must match the overall geometry of your frame. For the effectve length of your suspenson fork and for the sze of the nomnal dameter of the fork steerer tube please vst our webste at The fork crown must be freely rotatable wthout touchng the frame Tghten the bolts carefully by approachng the maxmum permssble torque n small steps. Check the secure seat of the component, as descrbed n the relevant chapters. For parts wth no torque range gven, tghten the bolts gradually to the maxmum torque and check n between regularly the relable ft of the component. Make t a rule to use a torque wrench Mountng another fork leads at least to a reduced rdng qualty. In the worst case however you could lose control of your Canyon bke, possbly causng an accdent! Make sure the fork crown can turn freely, passng below the frame. Please observe the effectve length of the suspenson fork! Do not mount any other than the delvered stem. Whoever assembles a Canyon bke frame from a bare frame carres the responsblty for ensurng that the components are selected and mounted n accordance wth the manufacturers gudelnes, generally accepted standards and the state of the art n scence and technology. In case there are any questons regardng compatblty of ndvdual parts, please contact our servce hotlne at +44 (0) All carbon fbres of the Canyon Lux und! Ultmate CF-frame were arranged n a way to meet the strength specfcatons for those drectons of force to whch they wll normally be subjected. For ths reason the rveted cable stops must only be subjected to forces as they are exerted by the gear or brake cable. Do not pull on them at an oblque angle or aganst the drecton of the cable,.e. away from the frame, e.g. n an attempt to alter the effectve cable length. Ths could otherwse cause damage to the frame. Some components have tghtetnng torque specfcatons prnted or labelled on them. Be sure to observe these specfcatons. Also follow the component manufacturers operatng nstructons enclosed wth the delvery! A wrongly dmensoned fork can change your bke s rdng behavour to the pont of you losng control of the fork.

29 54 FRAMESETS ASSEMBLY FRAMESETS ASSEMBLY 55 BOTTOM BRACKET BEARINGS SEAT POST All frames: BSA/BSC 1.370x24T, (Rght cup left hand threadng!) Wdth of bottom bracket shell: Mountan bkes Torque model Pressft 68 mm 73 mm 92 mm (or 89.5 mm wth 2.5 mm spacer) Common cartrdge bearngs can be mounted drectly nto the bottom bracket shell of all models wth hghgrade grease. Observe the torque specfcatons of the bottom bracket manufacturer. REAR FRAME WIDTH All mountan bke frames: Rear frame wdth wth X12: REPLACEABLE DERAILLEUR HANGER 135 mm 142 mm All frame models have a suffcently fastened replaceable deralleur hanger. Observe a tghtenng torque of 1.5 Nm. Do not exceed the maxmum torque of 1.5 Nm. Do not exceed the tghtenng torque of the bearng manufacturer Do not exceed the maxmum torque of 1.5 Nm when replacng the replaceable deralleur hanger When selectng a new seat post make sure t has the same nomnal dameter as the frame s seat tube. You should be able to slde t n easly wthout pressng or turnng. A msmatch between frame and seat post can cause falure of the seat post. Before mountng the seat post on the frame make sure the seat tube s absolutely free of sharp edges and burrs. If ether the seat post or the frame s made of carbon, then both parts have to be free of ol and grease. Clean and deburr the seat tube, f necessary. Take care not to overtghten the seat post bnder bolt or quck-release. Be sure to read the notes gven n chapter Adjustng the saddle to the correct heght as well as the permtted torques n chapter General notes on care and nspecton and follow the operatng nstructons of the component manufacturers, as well. Overtghtenng may cause a seat post falure, resultng n a crash and/or njury of the rder. Make sure the seat post matches accurately the frame Do not overtghten the quck-release lever Expect: Strve 6 Nm BOTTLE CAGE Use a maxmum torque of 4.5 Nm. Do not exceed the maxmum torque of 4.5 Nm. CABLE STOPS The cable stops rveted onto the Canyon Ultmate CF and Spectral frame must only be subjected to forces actng n the same drecton as the gear or brake cables. Forces actng at an oblque angle or aganst the drecton of the cable can cause damage to the frame. Do not exceed the maxmum torque of 4.5 Nm when tghtenng the bottle cage When replacng the deralleur hanger, make sure to apply a lttle grease between deralleur hanger and frame! Use Canyon carbon assembly paste to acheve a frm seat of the seat post. Observe the nformaton on seat post dameters gven under servce Even a slght msmatch between seat post and seat tube dameter can lead to a rupture of frame or carbon seat post. Ths can result n an accdent or njury to the rder. Never grease a carbon seat post or the seat tube of a carbon frame. The (seatng) poston s crucal for your well-beng and the development of your rdng performance on your Canyon. Therefore, be sure to adjust both saddle and handlebars of your Canyon as accurately as possble to your needs. In prncple, a mountan bke s sports equpment. For ths reason alone rdng a mountan bke requres certan basc precondtons of the trunk, shoulder and neck muscles. Your body heght s the decsve crteron when choosng the frame sze of your Canyon. By choosng a specfc type of bke you already roughly determne the posture you wll be rdng n. However, some components of your Canyon are desgned n a way that you can adjust them to your proportons up to a certan degree. These nclude the seat post, the stem and the brake levers. Never rde a bke wth a too hgh frame, resultng n a low crotch clearance when you stand over the bke. The Canyon Perfect Poston System system (PPS) offers you the possblty to select your Canyon perfectly tuned to your body wthout test rde. After carryng out assembly work, always make a short check (see chapter Before every rde ) and do a test rde n an unfrequented place or on a quet road. Ths wll allow you to safely check whether everythng s n good order. If you are unsure about how to do somethng, t wll be better just to check your seatng poston. If n doubt, ask an expert to adjust your Canyon. The correct saddle heght for cross-country, marathon and tour rders s the heght whch gves maxmum pedallng comfort and effcency. Attenton: When pedallng, the ball of your bg toe should be postoned above the centre of the pedal spndle. Wth your feet n ths poston you should not be able to stretch your legs completely at the lowest pont. If the saddle s too hgh, you wll have trouble passng through the lowest pont and your pedallng wll become awkward. If the saddle s too low, you may soon fnd your knees achng. You can check the heght of your saddle n the followng smple way. Ths s best done wearng flat-soled shoes. St on the saddle and put one heel on the pedal at ts lowest pont. In ths poston your leg should be fully stretched and your hps should not be tlted to ether sde. To adjust the saddle heght loosen the bnder bolt or quck-release lever (read chapter How to use quck-releases and thru axles beforehand). Use a sutable tool to release the seat post bnder bolt by turnng t antclockwse. Do not pull the seat post out as far as to let the mark on the shaft come nto vew. In the case of frames wth long seat tubes whch contnue beyond the top tube, the seat post should at least reach below the heght of the top tube! Ths can mean a mnmum nserton length of 10 centmetres (4.5 n.) or more. To adjust the saddle heght loosen the quck-release lever The leg must be fully stretched wth the heel on the pedal at ts lowest pont The mnmum nserton depths marked on! seat post and frame may dffer. Be sure to nsert the seat post to the deepest nserton depth. Wth chldren who are stll growng t s advsable to check the seatng poston every two to three months. Never apply grease or ol nto a seat tube of a frame made of carbon, unless an alumnum sleeve s nsde the frame. If you mount a carbon seat post, do not put any grease on t, even f the frame s made of metal. Once greased carbon fbre components may never agan ensure relable clampng!

Make sure the part of the seat post nsde the seat tube s always well greased. (Except: frames and seat posts made of carbon). Do not use brute force, f the seat post does not move easly nsde the seat tube. Contact, f necessary, our servce hotlne at +44 (0) Algn the saddle wth the frame usng the saddle nose and the bottom bracket or top tube as references. Clamp the seat post tght agan by turnng the seat post bnder bolt clockwse. You should not need much strength n your hands to clamp the seat post suffcently tght. Otherwse the seat post may be the wrong sze for the frame. If you are n doubt, please call our servce hotlne at +44 (0) Verfy that the seat clamp s suffcently tght by takng hold of the saddle at both ends and tryng to turn the seat post nsde the seat tube. If t does not move, the seat post s frmly seated. Does the leg stretch test now produce the rght result? Check by movng your foot and pedal to the lowest pont. If the ball of your bg toe s exactly above the pedal centre (deal pedallng poston) your knee should be slghtly bent. If ths s the case, the saddle heght s adjusted to the correct heght. Check whether you can balance safely on your bke whle sttng on the saddle by stretchng your feet to the floor. If not, you should lower the saddle a lttle. For drt bkng, freerdng, downhll racng etc. the saddle s set to a very low heght wth a rearward tlt. Ask your traner, a competent person n your club or contact our servce hotlne at +44 (0) for the correct seatng poston or read up on ths ssue n chapter Specal features of freerde bkes! In the case of heght adjustable seat posts, such as the Reverb from RockShox, the heght s adjusted by pressng a button on the handlebars. Read the operatng nstructons on the enclosed CD. Check algnment of saddle along top tube to make sure t s not twsted Try twstng the saddle relatve to the frame Tghten carefully by approachng the pre-! scrbed maxmum torque n small steps (0.5 Nm ncrements) whlst constantly checkng the proper ft of the component. Never exceed the maxmum tghtenng torque ndcated by the manufacturer! Do not overtghten the bnder bolt of the seat post clamp. Otherwse the seat post or the frame can be damaged. Rsk of an accdent! Never rde your bcycle wth the seat post drawn out beyond the lmt, maxmum, or stop mark! The seat post mght break or cause severe damage to the frame. If your bcycle has a long seat tube contnung beyond the top tube, the seat post should at least reach below the level of the top tube and the tp of the rear stays! ADJUSTING THE HEIGHT OF THE HANDLEBARS The heght of the handlebars determnes the nclnaton of the upper body. The deeper the handlebars, the more nclned the upper body. Ths means a more streamlned poston for the rder and more weght to bear on the front wheel, but the extremely nclned poston proves less comfortable, as the stran on wrsts, arms, upper body and neck wll ncrease. AHEADSET -STEMS OR THREADLESS SYSTEM (Aheadset s a regstered trademark of the Da- Compe company) On bkes wth an Aheadset, the stem also serves to adjust the headset bearng pressure. If you change the poston of the stem, you have to readjust the bearngs (see chapter The Headset ). The vertcal settng range s determned by the ntermedate rngs, also referred to as spacers. Wth flp-flop stem models t s also possble to mount the stem the other way round to alter the handlebar heght. Also follow the component manufacturers operatng nstructons enclosed wth the delvery. Aheadset -stem The heght of the handlebars determnes the nclnaton of the upper body. Make sure the handlebar-stem-combna-! ton s approved by the handlebar and/or stem manufacturer. The stem s one of the load bearng parts of your bke and changes to t can mpar your safety. Note that the bolted connectons of the stem and the handlebars have to be tghtened to specfed torques. Release the stem clampng bolts on ether sde of the stem and pull the stem off the fork. Now you can remove the spacers. Apply a ltte Canyon carbon assembly paste n the stem clampng area. Remount the stem entrely on the fork steerer tube and slp the spacers you have removed above the stem. Release the bolts on the sde of the stem Remove the spacers under the stem and place them above the stem If you want to turn around the stem, you have to addtonally remove the handlebars. To do so release the bolts of the stem front plate clampng the handlebars and remove them carefully. Apply a lttle Canyon carbon assembly paste n ths clampng area and retghten the handlebars after havng turned around the stem. Centre the handlebars accurately n the stem clamp. Retghten all bolts of the stem clamp wth a torque wrench by observng the correct tghtenng torques. Please note that when usng carbon assembly paste you normally need not use the maxmum tghtenng torque. It wll do already to tghten the bolts wth tghtenng torques that are 20 to 25 % below the maxmum tghtenng torques,.e. 6 Nm nstead of 8 Nm. That wll prevent the materal from damage. Readjust the bearng. Realgn the stem by makng sure t s n algnment wth the front wheel and at rght angle relatve to the handlebars and the drecton of moton. After realgnment of the stem retghten t and check whether the handlebars resst twstng and turnng (see chapter The headset ). Release the bolts of the front plate of the stem Retghten the bolts Stems come n very dfferent lengths and shaft and bnder tube dameters. A stem of napproprate dmensons can become a source of danger: Handlebars and stem may break, causng an accdent n the process. When replacng any parts be sure to only use parts that bear the approprate mark and, to be on the safe sde, orgnal spare parts. Make sure the handlebar clampng area s free of sharp edges. If you ntend to make any changes, contact our servce hotlne at +44 (0) Readjust the bearng and retghten the stem When removng the spacers you wll have to shorten the steerer tube. Ths change s rreversble. For ths reason, a shortenng should not be carred out untl you are absolutely sure about the seatng poston. Have ths job carred out by an experenced mechanc. We recommend that you contact our Canyon workshop through our servce hotlne at +44 (0) Verfy that the handlebar clampng area s free of sharp edges. 33 62 ADJUSTMENT TO THE RIDER FORE-TO-AFT POSITION AND SADDLE FORE-TO-AFT POSITION AND SADDLE ADJUSTMENT TO THE RIDER 63 FORE-TO-AFT POSITION AND SADDLE TILT The nclnaton of your upper body, and hence your rdng comfort and pedallng power, are partally nfluenced by the dstance between the grps of the handlebars and the saddle as well as by the tlt of the saddle. ADJUSTING SADDLE POSITION AND TILT Patent clampng wth two parallel bolts Wth so called patent seat posts two bolts fx the clampng mechansm, whch ensures the tlt and the vertcal poston of the saddle. Release both seat clamp bolts at the top of the seat post. Turn the bolts antclockwse no more than two to three turns to begn wth, otherwse the whole assembly can come apart. Tghten both bolts evenly and alternately wthout exceedng the permssble maxmum torque Ths dstance can be altered slghtly by changng the poston of the saddle rals on the seat post. However, ths also nfluences your pedallng. Dependng on whether the saddle s postoned more to the front or more rearwards, your legs wll reach the pedals to a greater or lesser extent from behnd. You need to have the saddle horzontal n order to pedal n a relaxed manner. If t s tlted, you wll constantly have to lean aganst the handlebars to prevent yourself from slppng off the saddle. The nclnaton of your upper body s nfluenced by the dstance between the grps of the handlebars and the saddle Move the saddle forth or back, as desred. You may have to gve t a lght blow to move t. Observe the markng on the saddle ral and do not go beyond. Make sure the seat of the saddle remans horzontal as you tghten the bolt evenly and alternately. The bke should stand on level ground whle you adjust the saddle. After fastenng the saddle check whether t ressts tltng by brngng your weght to bear on t once wth your hands on the tp and once at the rear end. Check the frm seat of the retghtened saddle Do avod a rearward tlt of the saddle SEAT POST MONORAIL Note that the bolted connectons of the seat post have to be tghtened to the specfed tghtenng torques. Use a torque wrench and never exceed the maxmum tghtenng torque! You wll fnd the prescrbed values n chapter Recommended tghtenng torques, drectly on the components and/or n the manuals of the component manufacturers. Never clamp the saddle n the curved sectons of the saddle ral, but always n the straght secton. The settng range of the saddle s very small. Replacng the stem allows you to make far larger changes to the fore-to-aft poston, because stems come n lengths dfferng by more than ten centmetres. In most of the cases the length of the cables must be adjusted. Be sure to have ths job done by a specalst workshop. The saddle s not ftted wth two saddle rals, as usual, but has a sngle carbon ral runnng underneath the centre of the saddle cover. Ths makes for a larger horzontal adjustment range of the saddle. After releasng both bolts at the seat post head you can move the saddle to the front and to the rear. These two bolts also allow the adjustment of the saddle tlt (e.g. lowerng the front end of the saddle). When you have found the perfect poston, tghten the bolts to a maxmum of 8 Nm. Seat post Monoral Check the bolts by usng a torque wrench! once a month accordng to the values ndated n chapter Recommended tghtenng torques, n the enclosed manuals or drectly on the components.

Move the saddle forth or back to adjust the horzontal poston. Tghten both bolts evenly so the saddle remans at the same angle. HANDLEBARS AND BRAKE LEVER ADJUSTMENT If you wsh to lower a lttle the nose of the saddle, turn the front bolt. It mght be that you have to loosen the rear bolt a lttle. To lower the rear part of the saddle, the rear bolt has to be turned. Havng found your preferred poston make sure both clamps are correctly algned wth the saddle rals before tghtenng the bolts to the correct torque settng as prescrbed by the seat post manufacturer. Please observe the recommended tghtenng torques n chapter General notes on care and nspecton. After fastenng the saddle check whether t ressts tltng by brngng your weght to bear on t once wth your hands on the tp and once at the rear end. Adjust the handlebars so that you can rest your hands on t wth your wrsts relaxed and not turned outward too far. ADJUSTING THE HANDLEBAR POSITION BY TURNING THE HANDLEBAR Release the Allen bolt(s) at the front sde of the stem. Turn the handlebars to the desred poston. Make sure the handlebars are accurately centred n the stem. Retghten the bolts carefully by usng a torque wrench. Observe the prescrbed tghtenng torque (see chapter General notes on care and nspecton ). After adjustng the handlebars you have to readjust the brake and shft levers, as well. Release the Allen bolt at ether grp bnder. Turn the brake and shft lever on the handlebars. St on the saddle and place your fngers on the brake levers. Check whether the back of your hand forms a straght lne wth your lower arm. Retghten the levers. Check the frm seat of the handlebar by standng n front of your Canyon and sezng the handlebars at both brake levers. The handlebars must be tght and wthstand any jerk. Gently retghten the clampng bolt(s), f necessary. Release the Allen bolt(s) at the front sde of the stem Retghten the bolts to the prescrbed torque Wth your fngers on the brake levers the back of your hands should form a straght lne wth your forearms Brng the saddle ral n a poston that the seat post clampng s wthn the marked area. If there s no markng, the clampng must be effected on the straght porton of the ral and on no account on the front or rear bend rsk of rupture! When replacng the saddle, bear n mnd that seat posts are normally desgned for a saddle ral dameter of seven mllmetres. Saddle rals of other dmensons may result n seat post falure, possbly throwng the rder off hs bke. Tghten the brake and shft levers to the prescrbed torques

They are usually fxed n a poston that gves the rder a comfortable grp when pedallng out of the saddle,.e. almost parallel to the ground or tlted upwards at an angle of about 25 degrees. Release the bolts, whch are usually located on the under or upper sde of the bar ends, by one to two complete turns. Turn the bar ends to the desred poston and make sure the angle s the same on both sdes. Retghten the bolts to the requred torque. Check the frm seat of the bar ends by tryng to twst them out of poston. Carbon handlebars wth bar ends requre specal end caps for sealng the handlebar ends. If you have carbon handlebars, be sure to read the manual, as the usage of bar ends s only allowed to a lmted extent by some handlebar manufacturers. Note that the bolted connectons of stem, handlebars, bar ends and brakes have to be tghtened to ther specfed torques. You wll fnd the prescrbed values n chapter General notes on care and nspecton or n the enclosed manuals of the component manufacturers. If you dsregard the prescrbed values, the components may come loose or break. Ths can lead to a severe crash. Bar ends gve you addtonal ways of grppng the handlebar Retghten the bolts to the requred torque Never fx bar ends n a vertcal poston or wth ther ends pontng towards the rear as ths would ncrease the rsk of njury n the event of an accdent. Note that the dstance you need to stop your bcycle ncreases, whle rdng wth your hands on bar ends. The brake levers are not n all postons wthn easy reach. ADJUSTING THE BRAKE LEVER REACH Wth many brake systems the dstance between the brake levers and the handlebar grps s adjustable. Ths gves rders wth small hands the convenence of beng able to brng the brake levers closer to the handlebar. The length of the rder s fngers also determnes how the lever poston for frst brake contact should be set. Check the pont, when the brake pads touch the brakng surfaces. If ths pont s reached after the lever has only travelled a short dstance, you have to readjust the brakes. For more nformaton on the adjustment of the brake lever reach, see chapter The brake system. Otherwse the brake mght drag after the adjustment. If ths pont s, however, reached after the lever has travelled half of ts way, there s a lttle play to reduce the grppng dstance of the levers. On most bkes there s a small (headless) bolt near the pont where the brake cable or brake lne enters the brake lever mount. Screw n the bolt and watch how the lever moves as you do so. Hydraulc brakes are normally equpped wth an adjustng bolt at the lever, by means of whch the poston can be altered. When you have set the levers to the desred grppng dstance, be sure to check whether there s stll enough slack for the brake levers to move a lttle before the brake pads ht the brake surfaces. Note that the dstance you need to stop your bcycle ncreases, whle rdng wth your hands on bar ends. The brake levers are not n all postons wthn easy reach. 36 68 PEDAL SYSTEMS PEDAL SYSTEMS 69 THE PEDAL SYSTEMS Not all shoes are suted for cyclng. Shoes used for cyclng should have a stff sole and provde a frm support for your feet. If the soles are too soft, the pedals can press through and cause foot pan. The sole should be not too broad near the heels, as the rear stays wll otherwse get n the way of your pedallng. Ths wll prevent your feet from assumng a natural poston and may cause knee pan n the long run. DIFFERENT SYSTEMS AT A GLANCE - HOW THEY WORK Pedals to be recommended are pedals whch provde a lock and release mechansm for your shoe, known as clpless or step-n pedals. The frm connecton between shoe and pedal prevents your feet from slppng off when pedallng fast or when rdng over rough ground. Besdes ths, t enables you not only to push but also to pull the pedals, whch makes your pedallng more fluent. A further advantage s that the ball of your bg toe comes to rest just at the rght place on the pedal spndle and that you do not block nadvertently the front wheel wth the tps of your feet durng steerng. Step-n pedal Shoes for step-n pedals Clpless of step-n pedals come wth a specal type of cyclng shoe whch locks onto the pedal smlarly to a sk bndng. To engage wth the pedal s to turn t to the horzontal usng the tp of the cleat (the plate on the sole of the shoe) and then rest your foot on t. Most mountan bkes are equpped wth a double-sded lock-n mechansm, so that you can step on the pedal wth ether face up. The shoe engages wth the pedal wth a clck whch you wll hear and feel clearly. Wth all commercally avalable systems the shoe s dsengaged from the pedal by twstng the heel outward. Lean aganst a wall or ask someone to hold you when you try to engage and dsengage the shoe from the pedal. Functonal dfferences between the pedal systems concern the shape of the cleat, the release angle and the rgdty of the connecton. Cyclsts predsposed to knee trouble should choose a pedal system that has some float, so that the heel can move sdeways a lttle whle the shoe s engaged wth the pedal. Some clpless pedals have cleats embedded nto the sole whch s a great advantage, as t ensures stable walkng. The clpless pedal dsengages by an outward twstng of the heel Cleats are recessed n cyclng shoe soles For clpless or step-n pedals you always need specal cyclng shoes. Read the operatng nstructons of the pedal manufacturers or call our servce hotlne at +44 (0) Takng up the pedals, engagng the shoes! and dsengagng them by turnng the heel outward should frst be practsed whle statonary. 37 70 PEDAL SYSTEMS BRAKE SYSTEM 71 ADJUSTMENT AND MAINTENANCE Current pedal systems can show consderable dfferences n desgn. Nevertheless, there are some general rules for adjustment whch apply to all of them: The cleat has to be fastened to the shoe n such a poston that the ball of the foot comes to rest on the pedal spndle. Your feet should assume a natural poston when pedallng. For most people ths means that the heels wll pont nward a lttle. Make sure the fastenng bolts are properly tghtened, as you wll fnd t almost mpossble to dsengage your shoe from a loose plate! Rsk of an accdent! Adjust the requred releasng force accordng to your needs. It s advsable to adopt a low releasng force settng to begn wth. Turn the small Allen bolt and examne the change n releasng force when you engage and dsengage the shoe from the pedal. Exposed sprngs and other components that attract drt have to be cleaned and regreased regularly. Squeakng or creakng cleats can often be slenced by applyng a lttle grease to the pont of contact between cleat and pedal. Regularly check the cleats for wear. If your shoe wobbles on the pedal, the cleat or the sole of your shoes mght be worn. Your feet should assume a natural poston when pedallng Adjust the requred releasng force accordng to your needs THE BRAKE SYSTEM In general the brakes of your Canyon are necessary to adjust your speed to the traffc stuaton. However, n an emergency the brakes must be able to brng your Canyon to a halt as quckly as possble. Such emergency stops are also a study n physcs. In the process of brakng, the rder s weght shfts forward, thus reducng the load on the rear wheel. The rate of deceleraton on a dry and grppy ground s prmarly lmted by the danger of overturnng and only n the second place by the road grp of the tyres. Ths problem becomes partcularly acute when rdng downhll. In the event of an emergency stop you have to try to put your weght back as far as possble. Actuate both brakes smultaneously and bear n mnd that, due to the weght transfer, the front brakes can generate a far better brakng effect on a surface wth good grp. The assgnment of brake lever to brake pad, e.g. left lever acts on front brake, can vary. Have the brakes changed, as you want them, before your frst rde. Wth dsc brakes too, prolonged brakng or permanent draggng of brake pads can overheat the brake system. Ths can result n a loss of brakng power, even to the pont of total brake falure, provokng serous accdents. Brake lever Dsc brake Make sure pedals and shoe soles are always clear of mud and other mpurtes and grease the lock-n mechansm wth lubrcant at regular ntervals. Only use clpless pedals that allow you to engage and dsengage smoothly. A defectve pedal or a badly worn cleat can lead to an accdent by causng the shoe to come off by tself or makng t harder to release. 38 72 BRAKE SYSTEM DISC BRAKES BRAKE SYSTEM 73 BRAKES HOW THEY WORK AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT WEAR Actuatng the hand lever on the handlebar causes a statonary brake pad to be pressed aganst a rotatng brakng surface, and the resultng frcton slows down the wheel. The rate of deceleraton s not only determned by the force wth whch the brake pad s pressed aganst the brakng surface, but also to a decsve degree by the coeffcent of frcton, whch depends on the two materals that are rubbed aganst each other. When water, drt or ol gets n contact wth one of the engagng surfaces, ths changes the coeffcent of frcton. Ths s why dsc brakes respond at a slght delay and less powerfully n wet weather. The frcton generated by brakng causes wear to the brake pads as well as to the rotors! Frequent rdes n the ran hasten wear on both engagng surfaces. Dsc brake CHECKING AND READJUSTING DISC BRAKES In the wet dsc brakes respond much faster than rm brakes. They also requre farly lttle mantenance and do not wear down the rms as rm brakes do. One drawback of dsc brakes s that they tend to be nosy when they are wet. Wth dsc brakes the brake levers can be adjusted to the sze of your hands, too, allowng you to operate them wth optmal effectveness. In most cases ths s done by means of a small Allen bolt located drectly at the hand lever. FUNCTIONAL CHECK Regularly check the lnes and connectons for leaks whle pullng on the lever. If hydraulc ol or brake flud leaks out, you should take approprate measures mmedately, as a leak can render your brakes neffectve. Contact, f necessary, our servce hotlne at +44 (0) Dsc brake Adjustng the grppng dstance of the brake lever Make sure that the rotors and brake pads! reman absolutely free of grease, lubrcant and wax. Brake pads, once contamnated wth ol cannot be cleaned, but have to be replaced! Wet condtons and/or a heavly clogged brake can lead to squeakng noses durng brakng. When replacng brake pads, be sure to only use marked orgnal spare parts matchng your brake. Leakages n the lnes of hydraulc brakes may render them neffectve. Remove such leakages mmedately, otherwse rsk of accdent! Check the pads for wear by nspectng the thckness of the brakng materal attached to the backng plate wthn the brake callper or vew through the wndow on the upper sde of the callper. If there s approxmately 1mm of materal left on each brake pad, remove the pads accordng to the manufacturer s operatng nstructons, check them thoroughly and replace them, f necessary. Manufacturers of dsc brakes delver ther products wth detaled operatng nstructons. Be sure to read these operatng nstructons carefully before you dsmount a wheel or do any mantenance work. When replacng any parts be sure to only use orgnal spare parts! Worn down dsc brake pads must be replaced Drty brake pads and rotors can lead to drastcally reduced brakng power. Therefore, make sure the brake remans free of ol and other fluds, especally when you clean your bcycle or grease the chan. Drty brake pads can under no crcumstances be cleaned, they must be replaced! Rotors can be cleaned wth warm water and mld soap. There are also specal brake cleaners avalable.

39 74 BRAKE SYSTEM DISC BRAKES GEARS 75 AVID, FORMULA, MAGURA AND SHIMANO BRAKES These brake models are equpped wth a mechansm whch automatcally compensates for the wear. Before every rde, check whether you get a clear-cut brakng response before the lever touches the handlebars. Check at regular ntervals, whether the brake pads are stll suffcently thck. The brake models of some manufacturers nclude transport locks wth cut-outs. The brake pads of these brakes must be replaced as soon as they ft nto these cut-outs. Only use orgnal replacement pads and follow the operatng nstructons of the brake manufacturers. If you have the slghtest doubt, leave ths job to a sklled mechanc. New brake pads have to be bedded n before they reach ther optmal brakng performance. Accelerate your Canyon 30 to 50 tmes to around 30 km/h (18 mph) and brng t to a halt each tme. Dsc brakes are susceptble to overheatng durng brakng. Therefore, do not touch the dsc or brake calper after extensve usage of your brake, e.g. after rdng downhll. Do not transport your Canyon wth saddle and handlebars upsde down rsk of brake falure. THE GEARS The gears on your Canyon serve to adjust your pedallng power to the slope of the road, wnd condtons, and the desred speed. The gears do not reduce the physcal work to be performed whch remans the same wth the dentcal dstance to be performed at dentcal speed, but the pedallng force per crank rotaton. In other words: A low gear allows you to clmb steep hlls wth moderate pedallng force. You have to pedal, however, relatvely fast. Downhll you swtch to a hgh gear. Every turn of the pedals takes you many metres forward at correspondngly hgh speed. To rde economcally you frequently have to swtch gears. As wth a motor vehcle, your engne wants to be kept wthn a certan speed range, f t s to gve ts best performance. On level ground your pedallng speed, also referred to as cadence, should be hgher than 60 strokes a mnute. Racng cyclsts pedal at a rate between 90 and 110 strokes a mnute on level ground. When clmbng uphll, your cadence wll naturally fall off somewhat. Your pedallng should always reman fluent however. Fnely graduated adjustments as well as an easy operablty of modern bke gears are the best precondtons for an effcent rdng. In addton, t reduces chan and sprocket wear as well as the stran on your knee jonts. About 97 to 98 percent of the pedallng force performed s transmtted to the rear wheel wth well-mantaned and greased deralleur gears. The control of the gear system as well as the brakng performance leave nothng to be desred. Wth specally desgned sprocket teeth, flexble chans and clearcut lever postons, shftng gears has become very easy. Most systems have an ndcator on the handlebars showng the currently used gear. THE GEARS - HOW THEY WORK AND HOW TO USE THEM Shfters n form of gear levers work n two dfferent ways. Wth most of them pressng the large shfter moves the chan to the larger chanrngs. The small shfter located n front of the handlebars, from the rder s vewpont, moves the chan towards the smaller chanrngs. Ths means that any gear shft made by pushng the large thumb shfter on the rght produces a lower gear, whle pressng the large thumb shfter on the left moves the chan to the larger chanwheel, thus producng a hgher gear. Press shfter from SRAM Press shfter from Shmano Shmano gear shfters are operated wth thumb and ndex fnger, whle SRAM gear shfters are exclusvely thumb-operated,.e. n ths case the bgger shfter shfts to a bgger chanrng, as well. The prncple of twst grps s dfferent. Twstng the rght-hand grp towards you moves the chan to a larger sprocket gvng you a lower gear, whle the same movement on the left produces a hgher gear by movng the chan to the larger chanrngs. The shftng drecton may vary n ths case, as well. The shftng of a gear lever s communcated to the rear deralleur va bowden cable. Then the rear deralleur swvels, causng the chan to clmb onto the next sprocket. It s therefore mportant when changng gears to contnue pedallng smoothly wthout force as long as the chan s movng between sprockets or chanwheels! There are, however, specal gudes n the chanrngs whch allow for changng gears under force. Shft levers from Shmano Twst grp shfter Keep on pedallng wthout force whle you shft. Ths wll lead to a smooth and quet gear change and reduce the wear. Practse changng gears n a place free of traffc untl you are famlar wth the functonng of the dfferent levers or twst grps. If you do so n road traffc, your attenton mght be drawn off from possble rsks.

Therefore, avod changng gears whle pedallng wth force, n partcular when changng gears wth the front deralleur. The front deralleurs of Canyon mountan bkes are usually equpped wth a very small chanrng. They have 24 or 27 gears. Some gears wth partcular chan run should be avoded. Gears wth an extremely oblque run of the chan enhance a hgher nner frcton, whch reduces the power transmsson effcency and hastens wear of the chan. An unfavorable run of the chan s when the smallest chanrng (front deralleur) s used wth one of the two or three outermost (smallest) sprockets (rear deralleur) or when the largest chanrng s used wth one of the nmost (largest) sprockets. Unfavourable run of the chan chan on the smallest chanrng and the outmost sprocket Unfavourable run of the chan chan on the bggest chanrng and the nmost sprocket CHECKING AND READJUSTING THE GEARS The deralleur gears were thoroughly adjusted by the Canyon team before delvery of your Canyon. The bowden cables may, however, gve way on the frst klometres makng gear changng mprecse. Ths wll result n the chan not wantng to clmb onto the next larger sprocket. REAR DERAILLEUR Increase the tenson of the bowden cable by turnng the adjustng bolt through whch t passes at the entry to the shft lever or rear deralleur. After tensonng the bowden cable check whether the chan readly clmbs onto the next larger sprocket. To do ths you ether have to turn by hand the cranks or rde your Canyon. If the chan readly clmbs onto the next larger sprocket, check whether t also readly shfts to the small sprockets when you change to a hgher gear. You may need several tres to get the deralleur system properly adjusted. ADJUSTMENT OF LIMIT STOPS BILD Retghtenng of the bowden cable at the adjustng bolt of the rear deralleur Look from the rear at the rear gear cluster and check whether the pulleys are perfectly algned wth the teeth of the adequate sprocket Do not shft under load, as ths wll shorten the durablty of the chan consderably. Furthermore, ths can lead to a chan-suck,.e. the chan can get jammed between chanstay and chanrngs. Avod shftng gears whle pedallng wth force, n partcular when shftng wth the front deralleur. Avod gears whch nvolve an extremely oblque run of the chan. Adjustng the front and rear deralleur! accurately s a job for an experenced mechanc. The lmt screws do not change ther poston durng normal use: If your Canyon topples over, the rear deralleur or ts attachment mght get bent. You should therefore check the swvel range after any ncdent or when mountng other wheels onto your Canyon. Shft the gear lever to the hghest gear (smallest sprocket). The nner cable s then totally relaxed and the chan wll automatcally run on the smallest sprocket. Look from the rear at the rear gear cluster and check, whether the pulleys are perfectly algned wth the teeth of ths sprocket. Lmt screws Ask a helper to lft the rear wheel. By turn ng the cranks and shftng through you can easly check the functon.

The lmt screws on rear deralleurs are often marked H for hgh gear and L for low gear. In ths case hgh gear stands for hgh transmsson rato,.e. wth the chan runnng on the smallest sprocket. If the screws are not marked, you wll have to fnd out by tral and error. Turn one of the screws countng the number of turns and watch the rear deralleur. If t does not move, turn the screw back to ts orgnal poston. Turn the screw clockwse to shft the rear deralleur towards the wheel and antclockwse to shft t away from the wheel. Change gears to the bggest sprocket. Be careful as you do so, as not to let the rear deralleur collde wth the spokes. When the chan runs on the bggest sprocket, see whether you can take the rear deralleur even further by movng the shft lever to the end of ts travel. Then press the rear deralleur further towards the spokes by hand. Spn the wheel. If the pulley cage touches the spokes or f the chan begns to move beyond the largest sprocket, you should reduce the swvel range. Turn the screw marked L, untl you are absolutely sure the rear deralleur does not collde wth the spokes. Check the poston of the pulley cage towards the sprocket. The gap between pulley and the largest sprocket should leave a clearance of one to two lnks at least. The rear deralleur s equpped wth a bolt located at the drop-out front whch serves the purpose of adjustng ths clearance. Screw n ths bolt untl the clearance s as desred. Turn the cranks backwards for checkng purposes. The pulley should not touch the sprocket durng ths movement, as well. Be sure to go on a test rde n a place free! of traffc, after adjustng the gears of your bcycle. Reduce the swvel range of the rear deralleur wth the lmt screws Check whether the rear deralleur remans clear of the spokes To adjust the clearance between pulley cage and sprocket, turn the bolt located at the front sde of the drop-out Improperly adjusted lmt stops or a bent rear deralleur mount can result n a severe damage to the bcycle and a rear wheel blockng. Rsk of an accdent! In case the clearance stll does not suffce, changng gears beng thus mpeded, you have to shorten the chan by one lnk. Ths means an ncreased tenson on the rear deralleur. It must, however, be ensured that the chan can run on the largest chanrng as well as on the largest sprocket. Due to the extremely oblque run of the chan, ths gear should however be avoded. FRONT DERAILLEUR Adjustng the front deralleur requres a great deal of experence. The range wthn whch the front deralleur keeps the chan on the chanrng wthout tself touchng the chan s very small. It s often better to let the chan drag slghtly on the deralleur than to rsk havng the chan fall off the chanwheel, whch would nterrupt the power tran of your Canyon. As wth the rear deralleur, the cable of the front deralleur s subject to lengthenng and hence to reduced precson n gear changng. Increase the tenson of the gear cable by turnng the adjustng bolt through whch t passes at the entry to the shft lever. Ths works manly, as descrbed n secton Checkng and readjustng the gears. Reduce the swvel range of the front deralleur wth the lmt screws. The ntal adjustment of the front and rear! deralleur s a job for an experenced mechanc. Maldadjustments may cause severe mechancal damage. For more nformaton be sure to read the operatng nstructons of the gear manufacturer. If the adjustments turn out to be mproper when rdng n road traffc, you may lose control over your Canyon. Always check after an accdent whether! the gude plates of the front deralleur are stll parallel to the chanrngs!

43 82 GEARS CHECK AND READJUSTMENT CHECK AND READJUSTMENT GEARS 83 SHIMANO D2 The D2 s the electronc verson of the hgh-qualty shftng groupsets from Shmano. Instead of cables the sgnal s transmtted by wres. The rear and the front deralleurs are moved by small electrcal motors. In case the chan runs too oblque, the D2 front deralleur s even readjusted automatcally to avod grndng noses and unnecessary wear. As rder you can choose among three modes of operaton. Two modes are the sem-automatc Synchro Shft opton. Ths means that the rear deralleur s shfted wth the rght shftng unt whereas the front deralleur shfts automatcally n the gven combnatons between the two or three chanrngs. In the thrd mode shftng of the front and rear deralleur s carred out as usually wth the control unts. D2 rear deralleur By tappng the upper, smaller shft swtch the chan moves to the smaller sprockets. In the case of the rear deralleur you can shft through several gears wth one movement. The number of gears depends on the programmng. On the system dsplay you can change to both Synchro Shft modes by smply pressng a button. These modes dffer n the graduaton of the gears. In the Synchro Shft mode you tap on the rght shftng unt the bg shft swtch for a lower gear and the shft swtch above for a harder gear. Rear and front deralleur are coupled to one another and shft to the correct sprocket or chanrng. The only thng you have to do apart from pressng the swtch for the correct shftng drecton s to lessen the force on the pedal that the chan can change wthout slppng through. The LED on the control unt ndcates the state of charge: - green lght s on for about 2 seconds: battery s state of charge 100 % - green lght blnks 5 tmes: battery s state of charge about 50 % - red lght s on for about 2 seconds: battery s state of charge about 25 % - red lght blnks 5 tmes: battery s state of charge empty Another new feature s that the gearset can be reprogrammed wth a servce tool. Ths feature allows programmng the number of gears that are shfted through as well as the shftng speed. Upon request, you can ask Canyon to reprogram and change the shft swtch functons n the system. For ths purpose you need a specal test devce from Shmano whch s also used for troubleshootng. The power supply s provded by a rechargeable battery mounted to the frame or n the seat post. CONTROL The XTR D2 comes, nstead of wth the classc Shmano shft levers, wth electronc shftng unts. In the manual mode you shft n prncple as n the mechancal verson. Instead of makng a wde swng wth the lower or upper shft levers, you only need to tap the shft swtches n the case of the D2. Shft to the larger sprockets by tappng the lower, bgger shft swtch. Shftng unt Before usng your new D2 shftng system, be sure to do a test rde n an area free of traffc. Change between the shft modes and test the unque shftng performance. You fnd more nformaton and vdeos on Shmano s XTR D2 Synchro Shft groupset under XTR D2 at Be sure to read the enclosed operatng nstructons of the gear manufacturer. BATTERY A new, fully charged battery allows you to rde approx. 800 to 1,000 km (500 to 620 mles). An about 25 % charged battery stll runs approx. 200 to 250 km (120 to 150 mles). Wth a weak battery the front deralleur s the frst component to stop workng, followed by the rear deralleur. In ths condton you can stll rde some more klometres and shft wth the rear deralleur. The battery should, however, be recharged as soon as possble. When the battery s empty, the rear deralleur remans n the prevously chosen gear. Shftng nto another gear s mpossble from that moment on! Over tme, the capacty of the battery wll degrade and so wll the dstance you wll be able to rde. Ths process s nevtable. When the achevable dstance you are able to rde no longer meets your requrements, you must replace the battery. You can check the battery s state of charge at any tme. Push one of the shft swtches and hold t 0.5 seconds at least. System dsplay D2 battery Recharge the battery only wth the charger delvered together wth the battery! Keep a nearly charged battery (50 % or more) that s not used for a longer perod of tme n a dry, cool place and out of the reach of chldren. After three months at the latest you should! check the state of charge. Mount the protectve cover on the battery s contact area pror to storage. Rechargng the (empty) battery wll take about 1.5 hours.

44 84 GEARS CHAIN CHAIN GEARS 85 CRANK GEAR CHAIN WEAR The SRAM Hammerschmdt allows two dfferent gear ratos. Shftng s performed wth a trgger shfter on the left sde. Pressng the bg thumb shfter makes for a lower gear rato. CHAIN MAINTENANCE It stll holds true that proper lubrcaton makes for enjoyable rdng. What counts s, however, not the quantty, but the dstrbuton and regular applcaton of lubrcant. Clean your chan from drt and lubrcant wth an oly rag from tme to tme. There s no need to use specal degreasers. Havng cleaned the chan as thoroughly as possble, apply chan ol, wax or grease to the chan lnks. To lubrcate the chan, drp the lubrcant onto the rollers whle you turn the crank. Ths done, pedal through several chan lengths and then let the chan rest for a few mnutes so that the lubrcant can dsperse. Fnally rub off excess lubrcant wth a rag so that t does not spatter around or attract drt durng rdng. SRAM Hammerschmdt crank gear Clean the chan from drt and ol wth a rag Although the chan s one of the wearng components of your Canyon, there are stll ways of nfluencng ts servce lfe. Make sure the chan s lubrcated regularly, especally after rdng n the ran. Try to only use gears whch allow a more or less straght run of the chan. Get n the habt of pedallng at a hgh cadence (more than 60 to 70 strokes/mnute). Wth mountan bkes, chans runnng on deralleur gears are often worn out as early as after about 800 km (500 mles). Heavly stretched chans mpar the operaton of deralleur gears. Cyclng wth a worn-out chan also accelerates the wear of the sprockets and chanrngs. Replacng these components s relatvely expensve compared wth the costs of a new chan. It s therefore advsable to check the condton of the chan at regular ntervals. For ths purpose run the chan on the large chanrng. Take the chan between your thumb and ndex fnger and try to lft t off the teeth. If you can lft t off clearly, t s serously lengthened and n need of replacement. There are accurate measurng nstruments for precse chan nspecton. Replacng the chan should be left to an expert, as most of the modern chans are not equpped wth a master lnk. Instead they have a contnuous desgn and requre specal-purpose tools for mountng. If you need help, ask a dealer to select and mount a chan approprate to your gear system. Check condton of chan Professonal wear measurement Clean the chan as thoroughly as possble and apply lubrcant For the sake of the envronment, only use bodegradable lubrcants. Bear n mnd that some of the lubrcant wll always end up on the ground, especally n wet condtons. Make sure the rotors and the brake pads reman clear of lubrcants, as the brakes wll fal otherwse! An mproperly rveted chan can break, possbly throwng you off your bke. Let your chan be replaced by an experenced mechanc.

45 86 WHEELS TYRES AND INNER TUBES TYRES AND INNER TUBES WHEELS 87 THE WHEELS - TYRES, INNER TUBES AND AIR PRESSURE The wheels of your Canyon create the contact to the road or track you are rdng on. They are subject to consderable stress through the weght of rder and baggage as well as through bumpy road surfaces or ground. Although wheels are manufactured wth great care and delvered accurately trued, ths does not prevent the spokes and npples from losng a lttle tenson on the frst klometres. For ths reason t may be that the wheels must be trued up as early as after you have run them n over about 100 to 300 klometres (60 to 180 mles). Check the wheels regularly after you have run them n. It wll rarely be necessary to tghten the spokes. The wheel conssts of hub, spokes and rm. The tyre s mounted onto the rm so that t encases the nner tube. There s a rm tape runnng around the base of the rm to protect the senstve nner tube aganst the spoke npples and the edges of the rm base, whch are often sharp. If you want to replace a tyre, you need to consder the actual sze of the old tyre. It s marked on the sde of the tyre. There are two desgnatons, the more precse of whch uses mllmetres. The number sequence means that the tyre s 57 mm wde when fully nflated and that t has an nner dameter of 559 mllmetres. The other desgnaton for ths tyre reads 26x2.25 whch refers to nches. By choosng a bgger tyre you rsk that the tyre drags along the fork or the rear frame. Therefore, please mount a tyre of dentcal dmenson. Wheel Dmenson and ar pressure range of the tyre Rm tape n the rm If you mount a new tyre wth another sze than the standard tyre mounted, t mght be possble that the clearance between the front of your shoe and the wheel wll be reduced when you rde at reduced speed. Durng compresson of the suspenson system a wheel can get jammed, as well. Rsk of an accdent! Tyres have to be nflated to the correct ar pressure n order to work properly. Adequately nflated tyres are also more resstant to flats. An nsuffcently nflated nner tube can easly get pnched ( snake-btten ), when t goes over a sharp kerb. The ar pressure recommended by the manufacturer s gven on the sde of the tyre or on the type label. The lower of the two pressure specfcatons makes for better cushonng and s therefore best for off-road cyclng. Rollng resstance decreases wth ncreasng pressure, but so does comfort. A hgh tyre pressure s therefore most sutable for rdng on tarred roads and smooth paths. Inflaton pressure s often gven n the old system of unts,.e. n ps (pounds per square nch). The table gves the most common pressure values n terms of three systems. The tyre and rm alone are not able to hold the ar. Except: Tubeless tyres wth mountan bkes. Therefore, an nner tube has to be placed nsde the tyre to retan the ar pressure. The tube s pumped up va a valve. Canyon bkes are equpped wth Sclaverand or race valves, whch are meanwhle used on nearly all types of bkes. Ths valve s provded wth a plastc cap to protect t from drt. Usng a wrong valve may cause a sudden loss of ar pressure and hence throw you off your bke. RIM TRUENESS, SPOKE TENSION Wth ths valve type t may happen that the valve body s not screwed n properly and that ar leaks out slowly. Check the seat of the valve body n ts stem. Hand pumps are often unsutable for nflatng tyres to hgh pressure. A better choce s a stand pump equpped wth a manometer whch enables you to check the pressure at home. There are adapters for all types of valves whch allow you to nflate any type of nner tube at the fllng staton. Wth race or Sclaverand valves the valve must be unscrewed The spokes connect the rm to the hub n the mddle of the wheel. An even spoke tenson makes for the true runnng of the wheel. If the tenson of ndvdual spokes changes, e.g. as a result of rdng too fast over a kerb or due to spoke breakage, the tensle forces actng on the rm become unbalanced and the wheel wll no longer run true. The functonng of your Canyon may even be mpared before you notce the untrue wheel by ts wobblng. Check the wheel trueness Valve adapter Trung stand Wth Sclaverand valves you frst have to undo the small knurled nut a lttle and press t n carefully untl ar starts to escape. Always rde your bcycle wth the prescrbed tyre pressure and check the pressure at regular ntervals, at least once a week. Make sure the valve dameter matches the! hole n the rm and the valve s always n uprght poston! Replace tyres wth a worn tread or brttle or frayed sdes. Dampness and drt penetratng the tyre can cause damage to ts nner structure. Replace spolt rm tapes mmedately. Except: Wth Mavc system wheels you do not need rm tapes. In the extreme case damage to the tyre may make the nner tube suddenly burst, throwng you off your bke! Loose spokes must be tghtened at once.! Otherwse the load on the other spokes and the rm wll ncrease.! Trung (retrung) wheels s a dffcult job whch you should defntely leave to an expert. Do not rde wth untrue wheels. Rsk of an accdent! It s therefore advsable to check the wheels for trueness from tme to tme. For ths purpose lft the wheel from the ground and spn t wth your hand.

47 90 WHEELS QUICK-RELEASES AND THRU AXLES PUNCTURE WHEELS 91 WHEEL FASTENING WITH QUICK-RELEASES The wheels are attached to the frame at the hub axles. Each axle s clamped tght n the drop-outs by means of a quck-release. Quck-releases requre no tools at all. Just release the lever, unscrew t a few turns, f necessary, and take out the wheel (see chapter How to use quck-releases and thru axles ). However, a thef wll fnd ths just as easy to do! As an ant-theft measure you can replace the quck-releases by specal locks. They can only be opened and closed wth a specal, coded key or an Allen key. Open the quck-release lever REPAIRING PUNCTURES Tyre punctures can happen to any cyclst. As long as you have the necessary tools for changng tyres and tubes and a spare tube or a tyre repar kt, ths need not mean the end of your cycle tour, however. For bkes wth quck-releases all you need for changng tubes are two tyre levers and a pump; f your wheels are secured wth nuts or ant-theft lock you also need a sutable wrench for removng the wheel. WHEEL REMOVAL Shft to the smallest sprocket before removng the rear wheel WHEEL FASTENING WITH THRU AXLE SYSTEMS There s a wde range of thru axle systems avalable now. Some systems are tghtened wth quck-releases. Other systems may requre specal tools for assembly or dsassembly. Check the fastenng after one to two hours n use and then every 20 hours of use. Always observe the enclosed operatng nstructons of the fork manufacturer. Never rde a bcycle wthout havng frst checked whether the wheels are securely fastened! A wheel that comes loose whlst rdng wll throw you off your bcycle! Close the quck-release lever Thru axle fastenng If your bcycle s equpped wth quck-! releases, be sure to lock the frame to an mmovable object together wth the wheels when you leave t outsde. Canyon mountan bkes are also ftted wth thru axle systems. For more nformaton read chapter How to use quck-releases and thru axles. If your Canyon has V-brakes you frst have to dsengage the brake cable from the brake arm. To do ths grp around the wheel wth one hand and press the brake pads and arms together. In ths poston t should be easy to dsengage the usually barrel-shaped npple or, n the case of V-brakes, the outer cable. Wth hydraulc dsc brakes make sure not to actuate the brake lever wth the wheel belongng to that brake beng dsmounted. When remountng the wheel, check that the rotor does not drag along the brake calper. Avod touchng the rotors mmedately after brakng, as they get very hot and you mght hurt yourself. If you have deralleur gears, you should shft the chan to the smallest sprocket before removng the rear wheel. Ths shfts the rear deralleur rght to the outsde where t does not nterfere wth the removal of the wheel. Open the quck-release, as descrbed n chapter How to use quck-releases and thru axles. If you cannot remove the wheel after releasng the lever or nut, t s probably stll beng held n place by dropout catches. They come as projectons whch jut nto the droup-outs. In these cases, just release the quck-release adjustng nut by a few turns and slp the wheel past the catch. Drop-out catches at the fork Do not pull the (dsc) brake lever wth a re-! moved wheel and make sure to mount the safety locks when removng the wheel! Rotors can become hot, so let them cool down before removng a wheel. Please read the operatng nstructons of the brake and the gear manufacturer, enclosed wth the BkeGuard.

48 92 WHEELS PUNCTURE PUNCTURE WHEELS 93 You wll fnd t easer to remove the rear wheel, f you pull the rear deralleur rearwards a lttle. Lft your Canyon a lttle off the ground and gve the wheel a lght blow wth your hand so that t drops out. REMOVING CLINCHER AND FOLDING TYRES Screw the valve cap and the fastenng nut off the valve and deflate the tyre completely. Press the tyre from the rm sde towards the centre of the rm. You wll fnd t easer to remove the tyre, f you do ths around ts entre crcumference. Apply the plastc tyre lever to one bead of the tyre about 5 cm left or rght from the valve and lever the tyre out of the rm. Hold the tyre lever tght n ts poston. Slp the second tyre lever between rm and tyre at a pont about ten centmeters beyond the frst one and lever the next porton of the bead over the edge of the rm. After leverng a part of the tyre bead over the edge of the rm you should normally be able to slp off the whole tyre on one sde by movng the tyre lever around the whole crcumference. Now you can pull out the nner tube. Take care the valve does not get caught, as ths can damage the nner tube. Pull the rear deralleur slghtly to the rear to remove the rear wheel Press the tyre towards the centre of the rm Apply the tyre levers and lft the tyre bead over the rm edge Repar the puncture accordng to the operatng nstructons of the repar kt manufacturer. After havng removed the tyre, you should check the rm tape. The tape should le squarely n the base of the rm coverng all spoke ends and should nether be torn nor brttle. In the case of rms wth double base known as double chamber rms the tape must cover the entre rm base. For ths type of rm only use rm tapes made of fabrc or durable plastc. In case you are not sure wth regard to your rm tape, please contact our servce hotlne at +44 (0) If necessary, you can remove the whole tyre by pullng the other tyre bead off the rm. MOUNTING CLINCHER AND FOLDING TYRES When mountng a tyre make sure no foregn matter such as drt or sand gets nsde the tyre and you do not damage the nner tube. Slp one bead of the tyre onto the rm. Usng your thumbs, press the bead over the edge of the rm over the entre crcumference. You should be able to do ths wthout any tools, regardless of the type of tyre. Stck the valve of the tube through the hole n the rm. Inflate the nner tube slghtly so that t becomes round and push t nto the tyre all the way round. Make sure not to leave any folds n the tube. To fnsh mountng the tyre start at the pont opposte the valve. Usng your thumbs, press the second bead of the tyre over the edge of the rm as far as you can. Make sure the nner tube does not get pnched and squashed between tyre and rm. Ths s prevented by pushng the nner tube nto the tyre hollow wth a fnger as you work along. Rm tape n the rm Put he valve nto the rm hole Press the tyre wth your hand onto the rm If the fabrc of the tyre s destroyed by the perforatng object, replace the tyre as a precauton. Replace spolt rm tapes mmedately. Remove the nner tube from the tyre

Towards the end you wll have to pull the tyre vgorously downwards to make the already mounted porton of the tyre slp towards the deepest part of the rm base. Ths wll ease the job notceably on the last centmetres. Check agan the proper seat of the nner tube nsde the tyre and press the last stretch of tyre over the edge of the rm by usng the balls of your thumb. If ths does not work, you wll have to use tyre levers. Make sure the blunt ends pont towards the nner tube and the nner tube does not get damaged. Press the valve deep nto the tyre so that the nner tube does not get caught between rm and tyre beads. Does the valve stand uprght? If not, dsmount one bead agan and reposton the nner tube. To make sure the nner tube does not get pnched between rm and bead, nflate the tyre a lttle and then move t sdeways back and forth between the sdes of the rm. Whle dong ths you can also check whether the rm tape has been dsplaced. Inflate the nner tube only to the desred pressure. The maxmum pressure s ndcated on the sde of the tyre. Check the proper seat of the tyre by means of the wtness lne on the sde of the tyre just above the edge of the rm. Make sure the wtness lne s even wth the rm edge all the way around the tyre. Press the tyre to both sdes to make sure the nner tube does not get caught between rm and tyre beads Wtness lne all around the sde of the tyre REMOVING TUBELESS/UST TYRES Deflate the tyre completely. Use your hands to press the tyre from the sdes towards the centre of the rm, untl both beads le slack n the centre of the rm. Start dsmountng the tyre at the pont opposte the valve and lft one tyre bead wth your fngers over the edge of the rm. Slp the entre tyre bead over the rm. Then pull the other bead off the rm, as well. REPAIRING TUBELESS/UST TYRES In the event of a puncture tubeless tyres also work wth an nserted nner tube. Frst remove the perforatng object from the tyre. Dsmount the valve from the rm, as well. Insert a slghtly nflated nner MTB tube nto the tyre. Mount the tyre as descrbed above and make sure t s properly seated n the rm and nflated to the specfed pressure. Tubeless tyres can be sealed on the nsde wth a conventonal repar patch. Follow the operatng nstructons of the repar kt manufacturer. Press the tubeless tyre towards the centre of the rm If you have a puncture en route, you can try to repar the tube wthout dsmountng the wheel and wthout removng the entre nner tube. Leave the valve stckng n the rm and frst look for the hole where the ar escapes. Pump up the nner tube. Brng the nner tube close to your ear and watch out for hssng noses. When you have found the hole, look for the correspondng place on the tyre and examne t. Often you wll fnd the foregn body stckng n the tyre. Remove t, f necessary. Improper mountng may cause malfuncton or even brake falure. It s therefore absolutely necessary to follow the manufacturer s operatng nstructons enclosed wth the delvery.

Wet both beads all around wth soapy water or wth tyre fttng lubrcant before mountng. Do not use tyre levers! Press the tyre onto the rm wth your hands only to avod damage to the beads. Press one bead over ts entre crcumference over one edge of the rm. Then press the second tyre bead over the rm edge. Centre the tyre n the rm. Make sure the tyre s properly seated n the rm base and the beads le symmetrcally on ether sde of the valve. Inflate the tyre to ts maxmmum ar pressure. The pressure s usually specfed on the sde of the tyre. Wet both beads all around wth soapy water before the mountng Mountng the wheel s done n the reverse of dsmountng. Make sure the wheel s correctly seated n the drop-outs and accurately centred between the fork legs or the rear and chanstays. Check the proper seat of the quck-release (see chapter How to use quck-releases and thru axles ) and connect, f necessary, the brake cable mmedately! Drop-out In dong so the tyre engages wth the rm. Check whether the tyre s properly seated by nspectng the fne wtness lne all around the tyre just above the sde of the rm. Ths wtness lne should be even to the rm all around the tyre. Fnsh by adjustng the ar pressure through the valve from the maxmum pressure. Please observe the recommended tyre pressure range. Ar pressure range on the sde of the tyre Make sure the quck-release lever s accurately closed Wtness lne to check the correct seat of the tyre Tubeless tyres must be mounted on UST! rms or UST wheels (Mavc and other manufacturers) only. Before you set off agan, make sure the dsc brake s not draggng. Make sure the wheel s correctly and frmly fxed n the dropouts. After mountng the wheel make sure the rotor s free of grease or other lubrcants. Be sure to do a brake test! Improper mountng may cause malfuncton or even brake falure. 51 98 HEADSET HEADSET 99 THE HEADSET The headset connects fork, stem, handlebars and front wheel to the frame, but allows them to turn freely as a unt. It must afford vrtually no resstance to turnng, f your Canyon s to go straght, stablzng tself as t runs. Shocks caused by uneven road surfaces subject the headset to consderable stress. It may therefore happen to become loose and maladjusted. CHECKING AND READJUSTING Check the headset for play by placng your fngers around the upper head cup. Brng your weght to bear on the saddle, pull the front brakes wth your other hand and push your Canyon frmly back and forth wth the wheel remanng on the ground. If there s play n the bearng, the upper head cap wll move notceably relatve to the lower cup. Another way to check the headset s to lft the front wheel a lttle off the ground and then let t drop. If there s play n the bearng, you wll hear a rattlng nose n ths area. To check the bearng for ease of runnng, lft the frame untl the front wheel no longer touches the ground. Move the handlebars from the left to the rght. The front wheel should turn very easly from far left to far rght wthout catchng anywhere. A lght tap on the handlebars should be enough to turn the wheel to the sde. Check the headset for play by placng your fngers around the upper head cup and by movng your Canyon back and forth wth actuated brake lever To check the bearng for ease of runnng, lft the front wheel and move t Adjustng the headset requres a certan! amount of experence and should, therefore, be left to a sklled mechanc. If you want to try t by yourself, be sure to carefully read the operatng nstructons of the headset manufacturer beforehand! THREADLESS HEADSET: AHEADSET The specal feature of ths system s that the stem s not encased by, but rather clamped onto the fork tube, whch n ths case s threadless. The stem s an mportant part of the headset bearngs. Its clampng force secures the bearng n ts set poston. Release the clampng bolts located on the sdes or rear sde of the stem. Gently tghten a lttle the countersunk adjustng bolt on the top by usng an Allen key. Realgn the stem wth the frame so that the handlebars are not slanted when the wheel ponts straght ahead. Retghten the clampng bolts located on the sde of the stem by usng an Allen key. Use a torque wrench and never exceed the maxmum tghtenng torque! You wll fnd the prescrbed values n chapter Recommended tghtenng torques, drectly on the components and/or n the manuals of the component manufacturers. Check the headset for play, as descrbed on the pcture on the rght. Be sure not to adjust the bearng too tght. To do the check stand n front of your Canyon and take the front wheel between your knees. Take hold of the handlebars and try to turn them relatve to the front wheel. If you are able to turn the handlebars, retghten a lttle the clampng bolt(s) of the stem. Adjust the bearng play by means of the countersunk adjustng bolt at the top after releasng the clampng bolts on the sde Retghten the clampng bolts located on the sde of the stem by usng an Allen key Try twstng the handlebars relatve to the front wheel Rdng the bke wth a loose headset ncreases the stress on fork and bearng. Ths may damage the bearng or lead to a fork break wth serous consequences! Check the secure seat of the stem after havng adjusted the bearngs, by holdng the front wheel between your knees and tryng to twst the handlebars relatve to the front wheel. Otherwse, a loose stem can throw you off your bcycle. Check the secure seat of the stem after you have adjusted the bearng! A loose stem may throw you off your bke!! Do not tghten ths bolt, as t s ntended for adjustng the play! Bear n mnd that by overtghtenng the bolts the stem can crush the steerer tube.

52 100 SUSPENSION GLOSSARY FUNCTIONING SUSPENSION FORK 101 SUSPENSION GLOSSARY - SUSPENSION THE SUSPENSION FORK Sprng rate or hardness: The force requred to compress the sprng a gven dstance. A hgher rate ndcates a hgher force requrement per unt of length. Wth ar sprng elements a hgher rate means a hgher pressure. Intal sprng tenson: The ntal sprng tenson of col sprngs and elastomers can be set wthn a certan range. Ths makes the suspenson respond only when exposed to a hgher load. The sprng rate remans, however, unchanged. Heaver rders cannot compensate a too soft sprng rate wth a hgher ntal tenson. Rebound dampng: Damps / slows down the rebound. Compresson dampng: Damps / slows down the compresson moton. Suspenson fork Rear-frame suspenson There s a clear trend n bcycle technology towards greater rdng comfort and safer handlng. For ths reason Canyon mountan bkes are ftted wth suspenson forks. The suspenson fork gves you better control of your Canyon when rdng cross-country or on rough road surfaces. It notceably reduces the stran on you and your bke caused by mechancal shocks. Whle there are varous desgns on the market, most suspenson forks belong to the category of telescopc forks, whch functon smlarly to the sprng elements commonly used on motorbkes. Suspenson forks dffer n ther sprng elements and n the way the dampng s realsed. Suspenson s provded by col sprngs, specal types of plastc known as elastomers or sealed ar compartments or combnatons of these optons. The dampng s usually done by ol or by the self-dampng propertes of the elastomers. Suspenson fork Lockout Sag: The dstance by whch the rear shock or fork compresses (should compress) when the rder assumes hs normal rdng poston whle the bcycle s statonary. Lockout: Devce blockng the fork or the damper from absorbng shocks thus ensurng a smooth rdng on tarred roads wthout vbratons. A lockout must not be actvated when rdng off-road or downhll. Platform dampng: Increases compresson dampng and helps elmnate bob. Compared to the lockout mechansm the suspenson s not nactvated entrely. Lockout HOW SUSPENSION FORKS WORK When the front wheel receves an mpulse, the lower fork tubes (also referred to as mmerson tubes) are forced upwards. The lower fork tubes travel on thnner upper fork tubes whch are fxed to the fork crown by means of a bolted connecton or a glued or compresson jont. The fork retracts as a sprng nsde s compressed. The sprng allows for the fork to extend agan and assume ts orgnal poston. An undamped sprng would nstantly extend agan, gvng a very uncomfortable rde. The fork s equpped wth an oscllaton damper whch prevents the fork from sprngng back uncontrolled and provdes a smooth return travel. The telescopc forks dffer n ther sprng elements and n the type of dampng. For elastcty these forks are provded wth steel or ttanum sprngs, specal types of plastc (also referred to as elastomers) or sealed ar compartments or combnatons of these optons. For more nformaton see the suspenson glossary headng ths chapter. Our Canyon mountan bkes are all desgned to be only used wth standard verson or comparable suspenson forks. The use of double brdge forks or of forks of dfferng effectve lengths s not permtted. Ths could cause serous damage to your Canyon, even to the pont of breakage, and n any case vods your guarantee. 53 102 SUSPENSION FORK ADJUSTMENT AND MAINTENANCE ADJUSTMENT AND MAINTENANCE SUSPENSION FORK 103 The dampng s usually afforded by ol whch s enclosed n specal chambers. Some models are equpped nstead wth frcton or ar dampng elements. For long uphll rdes nvolvng hard pedallng out of the saddle t s advsable to actvate the lockout mechansm. On the other hand, for downhll rdes on uneven ground t may be better to open the dampng system more or less completely. ADJUSTMENT AND MAINTENANCE To ensure an optmal functonng the fork has to be adjusted to the rder s weght and ts ntended purpose, even f your Canyon has been delvered wth sprngs matchng your weght. Adjustng the fork to your needs s easy, f you use a smple trck. Slp a cable bnder onto the upper fork tube so that t can stll shft easly along the tube. The fork should yeld n general when you st on the bke, n order to create a sag. Wth cross-country and marathon bkes we recommend a sag of approx %, wth enduro and freerde bkes a sag of approx %. If ths s not the case, you have to change the ntal sprng tenson. The ntal tenson of forks wth steel sprngs or elastomer fllng can be adjusted to a lmted degree by a turnng knob located n the top area of the fork head,.e. on the connectng pece of the upper tubes. Wth forks that use ol and ar, dampng s adjusted va the ar pressure n the fork. The pressure must be checked at regular ntervals wth a specal-purpose pump whch s normally made avalable by the fork manufacturer. Be sure to observe the manufacturer s recommendatons. Rde your Canyon on dfferent knds of surface and check afterwards how much of the fork s travel was used. If the cable bnder has only moved a few mllmetres, your fork s n too rgd adjustment and you need to reduce the ntal sprng tenson. If ths does not help, have the sprngs replaced. Slp a cable bnder over the upper tube Fnd out the sprng travel used by means of the dsplaced cable bnder Adjust the sprng rate wth a damper pump Almost all fork manufacturers nclude well-wrtten operatng nstructons wth ther delveres. Be sure to read these carefully before changng any settngs or dong any mantenance on your fork. If the cable bnder has moved along the entre travel range or f you can hear the fork bottom out, the sprng s too flexble and you have to ncrease the ntal sprng tenson. If the adjustment range s too small, have the sprngs replaced by an expert. The dampng adjustment mechansm s often located at the top and/or bottom end of the upper fork tube, near the drop-outs or on the other fork leg. Start wth maxmum dampng and approach the dampng deal for you n quarter to half turns. If the avalable adjustment range does not cover your needs, you have to replace the sprngs or shock absorbers. Many manufacturers delver tunng and retrofttng sets. Be sure only to use components approved by the manufacturer of your fork. Suspenson forks are comparatvely sophstcated components and requre a consderable amount of mantenance and care. Ths has led almost all suspenson fork manufacturers to establsh servce centres where customers can have ther forks thoroughly checked and overhauled at regular ntervals. The suspenson fork should be set up and! adjusted n such a way that t does not reach the end of ts travel (known as bottom out). A sprng rate whch s too soft (or too low an ar pressure) can usually be heard or felt as a clunk type nose. Ths nose s caused by the sudden complete compresson of the suspenson fork as t reaches bottom out. If the suspenson fork frequently reaches bottom out, t wll become damaged over tme, and so wll the frame. Adjustng devce of the dampng Actvaton of lockout mechansm! Actvate the lockout-system only on smooth lanes or paths. A fork wth a too soft dampng may brng the fork to the pont where t no longer rebounds when gong very quckly over a number of obstacles. 54 104 SUSPENSION FORK ADJUSTMENT AND MAINTENANCE FULL-SUSPENSION 105 The followng routnes are essental for suspenson fork mantenance: FULL-SUSPENSION Whatever type of fork you have, make sure the sldng surfaces of the upper fork tubes are absolutely clean. Clean the fork wth water and a soft sponge after every rde. After washng your bcycle, spray the stanchon tubes of the suspenson fork wth a lttle grease spray or apply a very thn flm of hydraulc ol. Do not use a steam jet or aggressve cleanng agents! Make t a rule to check all bolted connectons of your fork at regular ntervals. Keep the upper tubes of the fork legs always clean Full-suspenson bkes are not only equpped wth a suspenson fork but also wth a movable rear frame whch s sprung and shock damped by a shock absorber. Dependng on the system the rear shock has one or more suspenson axes wth at least two bearngs each. Shock absorpton s afforded by a steel or ar sprng, and dampng usually by ol. WHAT TO BEAR IN MIND WHEN ADJUSTING THE SADDLE Rear-frame suspenson Full-suspenson bkes yeld a lttle when the rder sts on the saddle. Ths causes the saddle to tlt a lttle backwards, an effect whch can be compensated by adjustng the poston of the saddle. If you have trouble sttng, try lowerng the saddle nose a lttle relatve to the usual poston. Suspenson forks are constantly beng sprayed wth water and drt from the front wheel. Clean them wth lots of water after every rde. Please read the enclosed manual of the fork manufacturer or vst the accordng webste. ADJUSTMENT AND MAINTENANCE The sprng characterstc of the shock absorber must be adjusted to the rder s weght and sttng posture. The rear shock of the rear swng arm should retract slghtly under the rder s weght to allow for a lttle sag. Wth cross-country and marathon bkes we recommend a sag of approx %, wth enduro and freerde bkes a sag of approx %. The O-rng on the damper n top poston Suspenson forks are desgned n a way to! absorb shocks. If the fork s too rgd and jammed, the terran nduced shocks pass drectly nto the frame wthout any dampng. The frame s normally not desgned to wthstand such undamped stresses. If your bcycle s equpped wth a suspenson fork ncludng lockout, you should keep n mnd not to actvate the lockout functon when rdng over rough terran, but only when rdng over smooth terran (tarred roads, smooth tracks). Suspenson forks are of sophstcated desgn. Leave all mantenance and repar work to a servce centre authorzed by the fork manufacturer. Use a sutable torque wrench and observe the manufacturer s torque settngs when checkng the bolted connectons on your suspenson fork! When buyng a new tyre for your front wheel, make sure t s not too hgh. Otherwse t mght drag along the fork crown wth a completely compressed fork. The front wheel mght get jammed. Rsk of an accdent! When the rear wheel passes over a hole, the sprng wll extend and the suspenson mechansm wll smoothen the uneven movement. If the ntal sprng tenson s set too hgh, ths effect s lost as the wheel wll already be fully extended. Ths means the loss of an mportant feature of safety and comfort. The O-rng dsplaced on the damper shows the sprng travel used Full-suspenson bkes have a markedly greater ground clearance than bkes wthout suspenson. If the saddle s adjusted to ts proper heght, you wll not be able to reach the floor wth your feet. Set the saddle a lttle lower to begn wth and practse gettng on and off the saddle.

55 106 FULL-SUSPENSION FULL-SUSPENSION 107 The sprng should be dmensoned and adjusted n such a way that the rear shock never bottoms out. A sprng whch s too plable makes tself felt and usually also clearly heard by the hard shocks caused by the sudden complete compresson of the shock absorber. If the rear shock frequently bottoms out, t wll sustan damage n the long term, as wll the frame. Adjust the ntal sprng tenson n a way that your Canyon yelds by approx % when you st on the saddle of a cross-country and marathon bke and by approx % when you st on the saddle of an enduro and freerde bke. The dampng s adjusted by valves nsde. These valves are desgned to modfy the flow rate of the ol and hence the speed wth whch the rear shock moves n and out. In ths way t s possble to optmse the response of your Canyon to obstacles. Furthermore, any oscllatory movement of the rear frame whle pedallng can be reduced. For long uphll rdes nvolvng hard pedallng n sttng t may be advsable to close,.e. to elmnate the dampng. On the other hand, for downhll rdes on uneven ground t may be better to open the dampng system more or less completely. Turn the small handwheel to adjust the dampng! Do not rde your Canyon, f the rear shock bottoms out. If your rear shock has steel sprngs, turn the knurled rng on the sprng clockwse (lne of vson from the adjustng rng to the sprng) to ncrease the ntal sprng tenson. If you cannot turn the rng on ts own, take hold of the sprng wth your whole hand and turn t together wth the knurled adjustng rng. Ar-cushoned rear shocks are adjustable va the ar pressure. Only use the pump provded for ths purpose by the rear shock manufacturer and observe the specfed pressure. On most rear shocks you can adjust the dampng externally by means of a handwheel. Ths enables you to change the secton of the valves n the ol bath and hence the ol flow rate and volume. Turn the handwheel n small steps and check the rear shock s response to these changes. Some models provde for separate adjustment of compresson and rebound dampng. Experence has shown that t s best to start wth compresson dampng entrely open and to vary rebound dampng frst. Rebound dampng s generally consdered satsfactory when the rear frame rebounds once after descendng from a hgh kerb. Fnsh by adjustng the compresson dampng. You wll notce the dfference by the speed wth whch the saddle retracts. Wth steel sprngs the sprng tenson s altered wth the knurled adjustng rng Ar dampers are adjusted by modfyng the ar pressure Try approachng the exact settng you need n half or quarter turns. Almost all manufacturers delver ther shock absorbers or rear shocks wth well-wrtten operatng nstructons enclosed. Be sure to read them carefully before changng any settngs or dong any mantenance work. For more detals on the adjustment of your rear shock vst the webstes of the followng manufacturers: Take your Canyon for a test rde on dfferent knds of surface. If the rear shock bottoms out several tmes, the sprng rate or the rato of the suspenson mechansm have to be changed: Steel sprngs come wth dfferent sprng rates. Replacng the sprngs s a job best left to an expert. On an ar sprng rear shock the ar pressure has to be ncreased. Be sure to observe the manufacturer s specfcatons. If you need to turn the adjustng rng of a steel sprng by more than three to four turns to adjust the ntal sprng tenson, read the enclosed manual of the rear shock manufacturer. There may be the need to replace the sprng by another model.! Actvate the lockout-system only on smooth lanes or paths. Rear shocks are constantly beng sprayed wth water and drt from the rear wheel. Clean them wth lots of water after every rde.

56 108 TRANSPORT TRANSPORT 109 TRANSPORT OF YOUR CANYON BIKE TAKING YOUR CANYON BY CAR There are several ways of transportng your Canyon by car. Canyon recommends puttng the bke nto the boot to take t wth you. Rear carrers are becomng more and more popular. Ther bg advantage over roof carrers s that you do not have to lft up the bcycles so hgh to attach them. Make sure the fastenngs do not create any damage to the fork or frame. Rsk of breakage! Whatever system you opt for, make sure t comples wth the relevant safety standards of your country! TAKING YOUR CANYON BY PLANE Bkes do take away a lot of space nsde a boot, but they are also better protected aganst drt, theft and damage. Transport by car If you ntend to take your Canyon wth you when you go on a trp by plane, pack t nto the BkeGuard or BkeShuttle. The Canyon BkeGuard Take, however, care that the cables, lghts and wres and n partcular the gears do not get damaged. Protect your Canyon wth paddng materal, such as blankets or the lke. Ths s also a good dea, when your bke s heavly soled, so that the drt does not wpe off on the seat upholstery. Make sure to secure your bke. Do not pull on the brake lever after dsmountng a wheel wth a dsc brake. Ths could cause the brake pads to come closer, makng t dffcult to remount the wheel at a later date. Push the transport fttngs nto the brake calpers. Fnsh by actuatng the brake levers and securng them wth a rubber band or a strap. If transportng the bcycle nsde the boot s mpossble, nearly every car accessory dealer and car company offers carrer systems whch allow bcycle transport wthout dsassembly. The usual desgn nvolves rals fxed to the roof of the car onto whch the bcycles are fxed wth clamps grppng the down tubes. Never transport bcycles wth dsc brakes upsde down. Ths could allow ar to enter the system, makng the brakes neffectve. Rsk of an accdent! Secure your Canyon when transportng t! nsde a car. In the event of an accdent unsecured loads nsde a car may be an addtonal rsk for the occupants. Often you wll fnd t necessary to dsmount one or even both wheels to load the bke nto the car. Be sure to read chapter The wheels, notably secton Reparng punctures, before removng a wheel. Do not use a carrer system on whch the bke has to be mounted upsde down,.e. wth the handlebars and saddle fxed face down to the carrer. Ths way of fastenng the bke exposes handlebars, stem, saddle and seat post to extreme stress durng transport and can lead to falure of these parts! Do not buy a bke carrer system where the front wheel has to be removed and your Canyon s secured by the fork. Suspenson forks are partcularly susceptble to breakage when fastened n ths manner. Transportng Canyon mountan bkes on! conventonal bke carrers wth clamps s not permtted. Most clamps are potental sources of damage to large-dameter frame tubes! Carbon frames are partcularly susceptble to beng damaged rreparably. Unvsble damage occurrng on ths occason may lead to severe crashes. Pack the wheels n specal wheel bags to protect them nsde the sutcase or cardboard box. Do not forget to take the necessary tools, a torque wrench, bts and ths manual wth you to be able to assemble the bcycle and to get t ready for use at your destnaton. In the event your Canyon has not been! packed for dspatch accordng to the enclosed packng nstructons, you have no rght to clam repar of possbly occurrng transport damage from Canyon Bcycles GmbH. Please make sure the lghts and the number plate of your car are not hdden from vew. For some carrers a second exteror rear vew mrror s requred by the road traffc regulatons. The Canyon BkeShuttle Read the operatng nstructons of your bcycle carrer and observe the maxmum load capacty and recommended or prescrbed drvng speed. Check whether your bcycle s properly fastened before and at regular ntervals durng the rde. A bcycle that detaches from the roof carrer may endanger other road users. Bear n mnd that your car has a greater! overall heght wth the bcycle on t. Measure the overall heght and place a sgn statng the heght somewhere n the cockpt or on the steerng wheel so that t can be easly seen.

Nevertheless, as wth other types of vehcles, you should stll see to t regularly and have an expert do the scheduled mantenance work. Lghtweght bkes need to have ther safety-relevant components replaced regularly (see chapter Servce and mantenance schedule ). Ths s essental to ensure the safe and sustaned functonng of all components and for your bke to gve you many years of rdng enjoyment and safety. WASHING AND CLEANING YOUR CANYON Cleanng the Canyon wth rag and water A much more gentle way of cleanng your Canyon s wth a soft water jet and/or wth a bucket of water and a sponge or large brush. Cleanng your Canyon by hand has another postve sde-effect n that t enables you to dscover defects n the pant or worn or defectve components at an early stage. After dryng your Canyon you should polsh ts coatng and metal surfaces wth hard wax (except for the rotors). Apply the hard wax also to spokes, hubs, bolts and nuts etc. Use a hand-held atomzer for parts wth small surfaces. Polsh waxed surfaces wth a soft cloth to gve them a nce shne and make them water repellent. Inspect the chan after you have fnshed cleanng and grease t, f necessary (see chapter The gears, notably secton Chan mantenance ). Polshng pant and metal surfaces wth hard wax Dred sweat, drt and salt from rdng durng the wnter or n sea ar harm your Canyon. You should therefore make a habt of regularly cleanng all the components of your Canyon and protectng them from corroson. Do not clean your Canyon wth a steam jet. Ths cleanng method s quck, but t entals serous drawbacks. As the water s ejected at hgh pressure n a narrowly focussed jet, t may pass through seals and penetrate bearngs. Ths leads to the dluton of lubrcants and consequently to greater frcton and onset of corroson. Ths destroys and mpars the functonng of the bearng races n the long term. Steam jet treatment also tends to abrade stckers. Check all lghtweght components When workng on your Canyon restrct! yourself to jobs for whch you are equpped and have the necessary knowledge.! Do not clean your Canyon wth a strong water or steam jet from a short dstance. Protect the upward facng part of the chanstay and any places where cables mght rub wth fol or the lke. Ths wll avod any unpleasant scratches and abrason marks. Before applyng any hard wax on the frame! of your Canyon, be sure to test t n a less vsble spot frst! Whle cleanng, look for cracks, scratches, dents, as well as bent or dscoloured materal. Fnsh cleanng your Canyon by lubrcatng the chan Keep the brake pads and the rotor free of cleanng agents and chan ol, as the brakes could fal otherwse (see chapter The brake system )! Keep carbon clampng areas, such as handlebars, stem, seat post and seat tube, free of grease and ol. Remove tough ol or grease stans wth! a petroleum-based cleanng agent. Never use degreasng agents contanng acetone, methyl chlorde etc., non-neutral, chemcal or solvent-contanng cleanng agents that could attack the surface!

58 112 CARE AND INSPECTION CARE AND INSPECTION 113 SAFEKEEPING AND STORING YOUR CANYON SERVICING AND INSPECTION If you regularly look after your Canyon durng the season, you wll not need to take any specal precautons when storng t for a short tme, apart from securng t aganst theft. It s advsable to store your Canyon n a dry and ary place. There are some thngs to bear n mnd when puttng your Canyon away for the wnter: Inflated nner tubes tend to gradually lose ar when the bke s not used for a long tme. If your Canyon s left standng on flat tyres for an extended perod, ths can cause damage to the structure of the tyres. It s therefore better to hang the wheels or the entre bke or to check the tyre pressure regularly. Clean your Canyon and protect t aganst corroson as descrbed above. Dsmount the saddle and allow for any mosture that may have entered to dry away. Spray a lttle fnely atomzed ol nto the seat tube (except for carbon frames). Store your Canyon n a dry place. Swtch the gear to the smallest chanrng and the smallest sprocket. Ths relaxes the cables and sprngs as much as possble. Hang your Canyon for an extended storng perod Store the bke wth the chan on outmost sprocket and smallest chanrng Check the tyre pressure at regular ntervals Frst servce: A specal mantenance schedule has been developed by our experenced techncans. On the frst klometres/mles, for example, the wheels may be subject to a certan beddng n process or bowden and brake cables may stretch, makng gear shftng mprecse. Dependng on how much you cycle, the repar of worn down parts may be necessary already. In ths case you wll be contacted by a servce techncan beforehand. Regular annual servce: Followng a long and challengng season we recommend that you have your bke thoroughly checked. Who could do ths better than those who have bult your bke? The annual servce wll be carred out by our sklled staff accordng to a mantenance schedule talored to your bcycle type. Canyon safety check: If you rde your Canyon clearly less than 1,000 km (620 mles) a year, t requres correspondngly less servcng. In ths case the Canyon safety check s exactly what you need. Our specalsts have developed an extra schedule for ths demand-orented mantenance. Ths schedule ncludes less routnes than an annual servce, however all safety-relevant ssues. We recommend that you have ths check carred out before settng off nto the new bke season or before gong on a bke trp so that you can take off wthout a care. Lghtng, rear lghts, reflectors: At nght the bcycle must be ftted wth the followng lghtng: - front lght, whte - rear lght, red - pedal reflectors, amber (for all bcycles manufatured after October 1, 1985) In addton, t should be ftted wth: - front reflector, whte - spoke reflectors [Law RVLR regs 13, 18 & 24)] It s not requred that the prescrbed lghtng s mounted upon sale of the bcycle. 63 122 WARRANTY AND GUARANTEE WARRANTY AND GUARANTEE 123 A NOTE ON WEAR Some components of your bke are subject to wear due to ther functon. The rate of wear depends on care and mantenance as well as on the way you use your bke (klometres travelled, rdes n the ran, drt, salt etc.). Bkes that are often left standng n the open may also be subject to ncreased wear through weatherng. These components requre regular care and mantenance. Nevertheless, sooner or later they wll reach the end of ther servce lfe, dependng on condtons and ntensty of use. Parts that have reached ther lmt of wear must be replaced. Ths apples to the followng parts: chan, cables, grp coverngs or bar tape, chanrngs, sprockets, pulleys, gears cables, tyres, saddle coverng (leather) and brake pads. Brake pads wth a wdth of less than a mllmetre must be replaced wth orgnal spare parts Bearngs are subject to wear GUARANTEE Over and above the statutory warranty we gve a voluntary guarantee of altogether 6 years on mountan bke frames (except for bearngs and rear shocks). Ths guarantee runs from the date of purchase and only apples to clams made by the ntal buyer. It does not cover pant damage. We reserve ourselves the rght to repar defectve frames or forks or to replace them wth the relevant successor model. These ssues can be clamed under guarantee only. Addtonal costs, such as assembly and transport costs etc, shall not be borne by us. The guarantee does not cover damage caused by mproper or other than the ntended use, such as neglect (poor care and mantenance), crashes, overloadng or resultng from changes made to the frame or fork or from the mountng or remountng of addtonal components. Damage resultng from jumps or other types of overstress are lkewse not covered by the guarantee. Sx-year guarantee The brake pads of dsc brakes are subject to wear due to ther functon. BEARINGS AND REAR SHOCKS OF FULL-SUSPENSION FRAMES Rear shocks and full-suspenson frames are to some extent subject to wear due to ther functon. Ths apples n partcular to the seals of the rear shock and the bearngs of the rear frame. Overtghtened rear shock fastenng bolts subject the frame to extreme stress and can lead to consequental damage. Therefore, observe the assembly nstructons and use a torque wrench.
