INTRODUCTION Ths specfcaton covers the requrements for applcaton of Standard Rng and Spade Termnals, Flanged Spade Termnals, and Insulaton Percng Rng and Spade Termnals. These requrements are applcable to hand or automatc machne crmpng tools. When correspondng wth TE Connectvty Personnel, use the termnology provded n ths specfcaton to facltate your nqures for nformaton. Basc terms and features of ths product are provded n Fgure 1. REQUIREMENTS 3.1. Storage A. Ultravolet Lght Prolonged exposure to ultravolet lght may deterorate the chemcal composton used n the termnal materals. B. Reeled Termnals When usng reeled termnals, store col wound reels horzontally and traverse wound reels vertcally. C. Shelf Lfe The termnals should reman n the shppng contaners untl ready for use to prevent deformaton to the termnals. The termnals should be used on a frst n, frst out bass to avod storage contamnaton that could adversely affect sgnal transmssons. D. Chemcal Exposure Do not store termnals near any chemcals lsted below, as they may cause stress corroson crackng n the termnals. 3 3.3. Wre Sze and Preparaton The termnals wll accept a wde range of stranded wre szes. Contact the Product Informaton Center at the number at the bottom of page 1 for specfc wre sze ranges avalable for your producton needs. A. Standard and Flanged Spade Wre Preparaton Insulaton shall be strpped as ndcated n Fgure 2 and s based on wre barrel length whch may be found on the product customer drawng. DO NOT nck, scrape, or cut the wre conductors durng the strppng operaton. Flaments of nsulaton materal remanng after strppng should be avoded and shall never extend among the bare conductors. B. Insulaton Percng Wre Preparaton Wre shall be trmmed cleanly and squarely. Due to the nsulaton percng technque employed n crmpng the termnal, t s not necessary to strp the nsulaton from the wre. See Fgure 2. See Secton 5, TOOLING, of ths document for detals on toolng optons. The appled crmp dmenson (wthn the functonal range of the product) s dependent on the termnaton toolng beng used. Refer to the documentaton (applcator logs and nstructon sheets) suppled wth the termnaton toolng for the appled crmp heght. Wre nsulaton shall NOT be fully cut or broken durng the crmpng operaton, nor shall the nsulaton be crmped nto the termnal wre barrel. Reasonable care should be taken by toolng operators to provde undamaged wre termnatons. A. Wre Barrel Crmp The crmp appled to the wre porton of the termnal s the most compressed area and s most crtcal n ensurng optmum electrcal and mechancal performance of the crmped termnal. The termnal wre barrel crmp heght must be wthn the dmenson provded on the applcaton toolng documentaton. 3 of 7

4 B. Effectve Crmp Length For optmum crmp effectveness, the crmp must be wthn the area shown n Fgure 3 and must meet the crmp dmensons provded n the applcaton toolng documentaton. Effectve crmp length shall be defned as that porton of the wre barrel, excludng bellmouth(s), fully formed by the crmpng tool. Instructons for adjustng, reparng, and nspectng tools are packaged wth the tools. C. Bellmouths Front and rear bellmouth shall be as shown and conform to the dmensons gven n Fgure 3. D. Cutoff Tab The cutoff tab shall be cut to the dmensons shown n Fgure 3. Fgure 3 4 of 7

5 E. Burrs The cutoff burr shall not exceed the dmensons shown n Fgure 3. F. Wre Barrel Flash The wre barrel flash shall not exceed the dmensons shown n Fgure 3, Secton X-X. G. Insulaton Barrel Crmp The nsulaton barrel shall grp the nsulaton frmly wthout fully cuttng nto t. Care must be taken to prevent cuttng, nckng, or scrapng of the nsulaton. Insulaton crmp shall comply to wdth dmensons provded n the applcaton toolng documentaton. H. Wre Locaton The wre conductor and nsulaton must be vsble n the transton area between the wre and nsulaton barrels as shown n Fgure 3. I. Conductor Extenson The conductor may extend beyond the wre barrel to the maxmum shown. No strands may extrude over the heght of the conductor crmp. See Fgure 3. J. Wre Barrel Seam The wre barrel seam must be closed wth no evdence of loose wre strands vsble n the seam. See Fgure 3. kk. Straghtness The force appled durng crmpng may cause some bendng between the crmped wre barrel and the matng porton of the termnal. Such deformaton s acceptable wthn the lmts provded n Fgure The up and down bend of the crmped termnal, ncludng cutoff tab and burr, shall not be bent above or below the datum lne more than the amount shown. 2. The sde-to-sde bend of the termnal may not exceed the lmts provded. Damaged termnals may not be used. If a damaged termnal s evdent, t must be removed from the wre and replaced wth a new one. Perodc nspectons must be made to ensure crmped termnal formaton s consstent as shown. 5 of 7

TOOLING Because of the large amount of product varatons and applcaton toolng avalable, t s not feasble to lst all the toolng on ths document. Lubrcaton s requred when termnatng any steel or stanless steel termnals. Tool lfe may be sgnfcantly reduced when crmpng comparable stanless steel/steel/nckel plated steel termnals. Ths secton provdes nformaton on tools for varous applcaton requrements. Crmpng De Assembles Crmpng De Assembles for crmpng the termnals are avalable for the full wre sze range. They are desgned for easy nstallaton and removal n hand crmpng tool frame assembles or applcators. Hand Tools Hand crmpng tools are desgned for prototype, low-volume applcatons, and repar. Applcators Applcators are desgned for the full wre sze range of termnals, and provde for hgh volume, heavy duty producton requrements. The applcators can be used n bench or floor model power unts. Each applcator s shpped wth a metal dentfcaton tag attached. DO NOT remove ths tag or dsregard the nformaton on t. Also, a packet of assocated paperwork s ncluded n each applcator shpment. Ths nformaton should be read before usng the applcator; then t should be stored n a clean, dry area near the applcator for future reference. Some changes may have to be made to the applcators to run n all related power unts. Contact the Toolng Assstance Center number at the bottom of page 1 for specfc changes. Power Unts A power unt s an automatc or sem-automatc devce used to assst n the applcaton of a product. Power unt ncludes the power source used to supply the force or power to an applcator. Tool Engneers have desgned machnes for a varety of applcaton requrements.
