DESCRPTON OPERATON MANTENANCE NSTRUCTONS Type AM Relay Wth One Auxlary Swtch Unt TYPE AM PNEUMATC TMNG RELAYS are for general use where t s desred to open or close electrcal crcuts followng a defnte tme delay. The tmng perod s ntated by energzng PNEUMATC TMNG RELAYS Type AM Wth or wthout Auxlary Swtch Unts the col of the "on delay" Type AM Relay or by deenerg1zmg the col of the "off-delay" Type AM Tmng Relay. The swtch unt, whch has the alternatng and drect current ratngs shown n the table, contans a normally-open and a normally-closed contact. The relay may be suppled wth the tme delay swtch unt alone, or wth the tme delay swtch unt accompaned by one or two auxlary swtch unts. The unts are dentcal n ratng, but the auxlary swtch unts are operated drectly by the magnet wthout ntroduced tme delay. The magnet s desgned for operatng on alternatng current only. The operatng cols are rated for contnuous duty and wll operate the relays at from 85 per cent to 11 per cent of ther rated voltage. The cols are nsulated for 6 volts maxmum. NSTALLATON Mountng. The relay may be mounted on ether nsulatng or metal panels usng the three mountng holes n the base plate. The relay should be mounted n the vertcal poston wth the graduated regulatng valve dal at the top. OPERATON "Off Delay". The operaton of the "off delay" relay s as follows: When the magnet s energzed the armature moves upward actng through the da phragm pn to move the daphragm upward and exhaust the ar promptly from the lower half of the ar chamber through the check valve. At the same tme the man and auxlary contacts transfer. Reassemble the magnet assembly to the base plate wth the armature above the col. nstall sprng as per Fg. 3. Energze the operatng col wth the front plate mountng screws loosened. Ths permts the armature to seat tself squarely on the magnet. front plate mountng screws. These relays may be converted as descrbed above by orderng a new base plate whch wll have the angle bracket necessary to provde a seat for the compresson sprng. Base plate S# Requred MANTENANCE Falure to Operate. Falure of the armature to close may be caused by an open col crcut, a power falure, excessvely low voltage or mechancal nterference. The armature and armature frame should move freely when the daphragm pn s held up. The ar chamber should not be dsmantled for any reason. ntroducton of dust partcles nto the check valve wll cause a change n the tme settng or may cause complete falure of the tme delay mechansm. The proper return sprng must be used wth the "on delay" relay. Ths sprng exerts l. 75 lbs. at 1 nch ntal length and 2.55 lbs. at 11/rG nch fnal length. Operatng Lever. The operatng lever s accurately adjusted at the factory. Should further adjustment be necessary, however, proceed as follows: Loosen locknut on the adjustng screw, tum the adjustng screw slghtly, and check to see that swtch unt operates when operatng lever s 1h2 nch from the shoulder of the operatng pn. Cauton must be used when makng ths adjustment snce very lttle turnng of adjustng screw s requred to correct the acton of the operatng lever. After correct adjustment s made, lock adjustng screw n ths poston usng the locknut. Te-Plate. The te-plate s accurately adjusted at the factory when an nstantaneous swtch s provded on the relay. Should further adjustment be necessary, however, proceed as follows: Adjustment s accomplshed by nsertng a screw drver nto the slot at the bendable porton of the te-plate adjacent to the pushbutton of the swtch and bowng out ths secton n the drecton requred. Check the adjustment by movng the armature frame assembly to the end of ts travel n each drecton. The pushbutton of the swtch should have a mnmum overtravel of.2" beyond the trp ponts, and have approxmately.15" travel remanng to ts bottomng poston. Care must be exercsed n bowng out the bendable porton of the te-plate to avod bendng of the te-plate at the knfe edge. Col Replacement. n order to remove the col, frst remove the armature and front plate assembly by takng out the two screws securng the plate to the statonary magnet. On the "On Delay" relay t s necessary to remove one of the magnet mountng screws and tlt the assembly before the armature can be removed. Remove the col by compressng the col hangar clps, and pull col out. Replace wth the proper col and reassemble. Wth those relays havng two auxlary swtch unts, t s necessary to frst remove one of the swtch unts to expose the front plate mountng screws. The "on delay" relay s smlar to the "off delay" relay except that the magnet s nverted and an addtonal sprng s used to hold the armature open. To start the tmng perod, the col s energzed and the armature moves downward, actuatng any exstng auxlary swtch unts. Through the nfluence of the operatng sprng, actng through a lever, the daphragm pn s retracted downward. The movement of the latter s retarded by the rate at whch ar can enter the chamber through a restrcted orfce. The acton produces a prompt transfer of the contacts of both ON DELAY man and auxlary swtch unts. n ths condton s normally 5!16 nch. 1 --ARMATURE v.l 1234-D BRACKET l -SPRNG PN The armature gap Adjustment. Settng of the tme delay s afforded solely by turnng the dal whch controls the orfce of the regulatng valve. The tmng range s.2 to 2 seconds {except that the maxmum tme delay obtanable wth relays havng black anodzed alumnum ar chamber castngs s 9 seconds). To determne the dal settng for a desred tme delay, frst measure, preferably between 3 and 6 seconds, the tme delay produced by a random settng of the dal. Then determne from the curve the number of dal revolutons requred to gve the desred tme delay. and check the tme delay obtaned. Adjust the dal accordngly The tmng calbraton of the relay s unaffected by changes n humdty and ambent temperature. The nternal parts are kept free from dust by a wool felt flter through whch the ar enterng the chamber passes. Swtch Unts. The contacts of the swtch unts are of a modfed transfer type.
