The normal armature is in the front and the reverse armature is to the rear of the relay. Each armature is connected to its own independent operating arm and contact bar, and operates its own set of contacts entirely independent of the other armature. With no energy applied to the coil, the normal armature stands to the right, closing its two back contacts, and the reverse armature stands to the left, closing its two back contacts. Fig. 1 shows the arrangement of the two separate sets of armatures, contact bars and operating arms. There is a clearance of at least 1/16 inch provided between the normal and reverse armatures, contact bars and operating arms to insure independent operation. This relay operates from direct current, and operation of the normal or reverse armature depends upon the polarity of the direct current applied tu the relay coil. The reverse armature will not operate, but will remain to the left, keeping its two back contacts closed. With energy of opposite polarity applied to the coil, the reverse armature will move to the right, opening its two back contacts and closing its two front contacts. n this instance, the normal armature will not move, but will remain to the right, keeping its two back contacts closed. This provides for three-position operation and is the equivalent of two polar biased relays so connected that their back contacts are closed with no energy applied to the relay, but the front contacts of one relay are closed for one polarity of applied energy and the front contacts of the other relay are closed when energy of the opposite polarity is applied.

3 u. s. & s U-5474 When the Style CDD relay is operated on code of positive polarity, (i.e., polarity in agreement with top plate marking) the reverse back contacts will be closed continuously, the normal front contacts will be closed during the "on" period, and the normal back contacts will be closed during the "off" period of code. When operated on code of negative polarity, the normal back contacte" will be closed continuously, the reverse front contacts will be closed during the "on" period, and the reverse back contacts will be closed during the "off" period of code. t is possible to apply a "polar code" to this relay which is of positive polarity during the first half of the code cycle, and is of negative polarity during the second half of the code cycle. Under this type of operation, the normal front contacts and the reverse back contacts are closed during the first half of the code cycle, and the reverse front contacts and the normal back contacts are closed during the second half of the code cycle. This provides for continuous response to both positive and negative code so that an additional indication is obtainable. Excellent mechanical life of the Style CDD relay will be obtained because of the fact that it contains no trunnions for its moving parts. The moving parts are all suspended by springs, which have no wear, and all engaging parts except the contacts themselves, are chromium plated to obtain long life. This relay is the same size as our Style CD code following relay and most of the detail parts are identical. 4 u. s. & s U-5474 minimum distortion. The code reproducing characteristics of this relay are the same as that obtained in our Style CD relay. Two permanent magnets are used on this relay, which provide a high degree of efficiency and stability. The Style CDD relay operates on the same power as a single Style CD relay. ( Both Line and Track relays. ) n order to s~mplify the use of this relay when making case wiring plans, markers are applied to each active terminal post. Fig. 2 shows the termi nal arrangement and the marking applied to each active terminal post. The Style CDD relay has numerous circuit applications where it may be used as a polarized normal code following relay or as a polarized reverse code fallowing relay. t is not the intent of this pamphlet to show these circuit applications. However, when this relay is shown in circuit diagrams, the symbol shown in Fig. 3 is used. REFERENCES Fig. 3.". Circuit symbol. The references for the Style CDD relays are found on Plate W-23 of the U. S. & S. catalog. APPLCATON Style CDD relays are provided with two normal-front and back, and two reverse-front and back contacts. These relays, like the Style CD relays, are available in a variety of resistances and may be divided into two classes as described below: 1. Track Relays n d-c. track circuits, the track relays are connected across the rails at one end of the track circuit and will operata at the code frequency corresponding to that applied at the other end of the circuit. The relay will operate in a manner corresponding to the polarity of the code as described previously. 2. Line Relays The line relays, like the track relays, are d-c. relays which operate in accordance with the applied polarity and code frequency as described previously These relays may be operated from line circuits, the length of which is determined by the relay resistance, size of line wires, and operating supply voltage. This relay when used in line circuits must have the coil snubbed with a resistance to provide for proper code reproduction and to provide arc suppression for the contacts feeding the relay coil circuit. SELECTON AND DENTFCATON OF CONTACTS The type of service determines the type of material for the contacts. n general, when the voltage is less than 25 volts, silver-platinum contacts should

5 u. s. & s U-5474 be specified. For voltages in excess of 25 volts, or for highly inductive circuits at any voltage, tungsten contacts should be specified. The relay terminal posts have been fitted with contact marking tags to designate the type of contact used in that particular position. A red tag designates high-voltage or tungsten contacts, a green tag designates low-voltage or silver-platinum contacts, and a white tag designates a coil terminal. A heel terminal is tagged with the same color tag as the corresponding front and back contacts. Where the front and back contacts are not tagged with the same color tags, then the heel post tag is white. This information appears on the name plate as Green-Silver Platinum and Red-Tungsten. MANTENANCE AND NSPECTON n service operation, the relay contacts should be observed at frequent intervals to see that they are operating with adequate compression, and that all contact tips are in good condition. The contacts should not show excessive pitting or loss of material, although a certain amount of roughening is to be expected, and is not harmful. Every two years the calibration values of the Style CDD code following relay should be measured, and if they are not within the field limits as specified in the calibration tables, the relay should be removed from service and repaired to meet the shop limits specified. f at any time the front contact "On Time" of the track relay is greater than 65% or less than 30%, the circuit should be checked for adjustment. f the circuit adjustment is satisfactory, the track relay calibration should then be checked to determine whether it is within the field limits. The track circuit adjustments and testing of these relays can be facilitated greatly by the use of the Union Style PD-20 Code Meter described in nstruction Pamphlet U NSTRUCTONS FOR SHOP REPARS About the only need for shop repairs is that of dressing or replacing badly worn contacts, and making slight adjustments to the relay. f it is necessary to replace the contact springs, extreme care must be taken to prevent twisting or distorting of the hinge springs which support the contact bar. MECHANCAL AD1USTMENTS The following mechanical adjustments are intended primarily for use in case it is necessary to replace any parts in the relay. 1. Length of armature core pins is inch on one side and inch on the other. 2. n assembling the armatures, the normal armature should have th~ long core pin to the left, and the reverse armature should have the long core pin to the right. 3. The total travel of each armature, as measured at the core pins, is O. 074 inch. This travel i_s adjusted by moving the upper pole pieces. U it should become necessary at any time to move the upper pole pieces to read-

6 u. s. & s U-5474 just the total armature travel, it should be noted that the air gaps for both the normal and reverse armatures are exactly equal. This can be checked by inserting a inch spacer on both sides of the armatures between the core pins and the pole pieces and moving the pole pieces in against the spacers. f there is a difference in the air gaps, it can be corrected by rotating one or both of the pole pieces using a screw driver in the..slot at the shank end of the pole piece until the two air gaps are the same. The calibration of the relay depends greatly upon the two air gaps being exactly the same, therefore, this should be checked whenever the upper pole pieces are moved or replaced. 4. The bias force for each armature is measured in grams with the permanent magnets removed, and with the relay deenergized. This force is measured separately on each armature, near the point where the armature engages the operating arm. For the normal armature, this is the force, to the right, required to hold the core pins of that armature equidistant from each pole face. For the reverse armature, this is the force, to the left, required to hold the armature core pins of that armature equidistant from each pole face. This armature bias force is: grams for all track relays grams for all line relays. # The bias force may be adjusted by bending slightly the proper branch of the armature support bracket. The armature spring itself should not be bent. 5. At any position of the armature, there should be not less than inch nor more than O. 003 inch clearance between the armature and the two bearing points of the operating arm on the contact support bracket. 6. t is necessary that the free position of the normal and reverse contact bar and operating arm assemblies be approximately in the center position. To check this position, place a inch spacer between the left-hand pole piece and the core pins on both of the armatures and check that the left-hand button on each operating arm touches the respective armature. With a inch spacer between the right-hand pole piece and the core pins on both of the armatures, check that the right-hand button on each operating arm touches the respective armature. This adjustment may be obtained by bending slightly the hinge springs. Extreme care must be taken to assure that no sharp bends or kinks are introduced in the hinge springs. 7. The initial pressure of the front and back contact springs should be adjusted to a value of grams. 8. At this time, a check should be made to make certain that the contacts make absolutely flat and that the surfaces of the contact tips align properly. 9. The contacts should be set so that they Just close with a inch spacer between the core pin and the pole face on the same side of the armature as the contact that is being measured. The contacts should open when a inch spacer is used as described above. Whenadjusting the contacts with the spacer, the armature should be brought 1p against the spacer with d-c. current of the proper polarity or by an equivalent force against the armature and not against the operating arm.

7 u. s. & s U To make sure that silver-platinum contacts are absolutely clean and that there is no surface contamination, all silver-platinum contacts should be cleaned by filing with a clean #4 contact file. After filing, the contacts should be further cleaned by drawing a clean piece of bond paper between them. 11. When the relay is assembled, a check should be made to insure that there is a clearance of at least 1/16 inch between normal and reverse armatures, contact bars and operating arms. PERMANENT MAGNETS The permanent magnets should be handled carefully, and if they are removed from the relay for any length of time, a soft iron bar or "keeper" should be applied across each magnet. The permanent magnets should be applied to the relay with the north poles to the left of the relay. A check should be made to insure that the magnets have been applied properly. This check is made as described under "Calibration". The strength of each permanent magnet can be measured by applying it to the testing device, Pc , described in nstruction Pamphlet U-5456 entitled "Testing of Permanent Magnets for Style CD Relays". Each magnet should be calibrated to have the strength as given in Table m. The permanent magnets can be calibrated by using the magnet charger described in nstruction Pamphlet U CALBRATON When the relay is being calibrated with the glass cover removed, it should be standing level and resting on its steel base plate. This will prevent the calibration values from changing when the base plate and glass cover are assembled to the relay. - To check that the permanent magnets have been correctly applied, energy of a polarity which is in agreement with the top plate marking should be applied to the coil and it should be noted that only the normal armature moves from right to left. With the energy on the coil reversed, it should be noted that the reverse armature moves from left to right. The lower air gaps should initially be set approximately to the values given in Table n. The calibration values for each relay should then be taken and the values should agree with those given in Table m for "Shop Adjustment Limits". t is permissible to change the lower air gaps to obtain the proper calibration values, but this changes the calibrations for both the normal and reverse armatures at the same time. The change in calibration of one armature without changing the other may be accomplished by changing the individual armature bias as described previously. The pick-up value is the current at which the front r.ontacts just close; the full stroke vaj.ue ts the current at which the front core pin strikes the pole piece; the release value is the current at which the front contacts just open; and the full release value is the current at which the back core pin strikes the pole piece.

8 u. s. & s U-5474 Before taking the release values, the relay should be charged to the value of current given in the table. Before taking the pick-up and full stroke values, the circuit should be opened momentarily. DYNAMC TEST All new and reconditioned relays should meet the dynamic operating characteristics as specified below. t is permissible to adjust slightly the lower air gaps and also the armature bias to obtain proper dynamic operation, but the relay must be rechecked to make certain that the calibration of the relay is still within the limits as shown in Table ll under "Shop Adjustment Limits". 1. When checking the dynamic operating characteristics of the normal set of contacts, switch #1 is closed and switch #2 is open. The "on time" of the relay should be compared with the front contact "on time" of the 180 code transmitter. When checking the dynamic operating characteristics of the reverse set of contacts, switch #2 is closed and switch #1 is open. The "on time" of the relay should be compared with the back contact "on time" of the 180 code transmitter. With steady energy applied and switch #3 closed (switch #4 open), vary Rx until track relay current is equal to the value in Table under "Max. O. T. Loss". With the code transmitter operating at 180 code frequency, the "on time" loss of the track relay should not exceed the value given in Table.

The line relay should be tested for "on time" operation by connecting it in the circuit shown in Fig. 5. The voltage and snub resistor should be as specified in Table. A 180 code transmitter having silver-platinum contacts should be used. Do not use any resistance in series with the relay. Voltage Relay Winding Volts % Volts Ohms % 135 8/ / / FNAL NSPECTON After any repairs other than readjusting the lower pole piece, the completed relay should be given a breaking-in run for 16 hours on 180 code, energized at approximately twice the charge value given in Table. The polarity shc.,jld be alternately changed so that both the normal and reverse armatures will be operated. The completed relay, with glass shield and base assembled and properly tightened to the mechanism, should be checked to make sure that all calibration values are within the "Shop Adjustment Limits" given in Table.
