1 ,i -' WRBCC - SERVICE SPECIFICATION SU-4549 STYLE PL-59 RELAY GROUPS FOR AUTOMATIC TRAIN CONTROL ***************** This specification covers shop adjustment and testing of the Style PL-59 Relay Groups as used in automatic train control. It is to be used when relay groups are shopped as the result of routine locomotive equipment testing, or periodic shopping. A. MECHANICAL INSPECTION OF INDIVIDUAL RELAYS. 1. The core of each relay within the group must fit tightly and squarely against the backstrap so that the axis of the core is parallel to the edges of the backs trap. 2. The copper washers (when used) and the relay coil should be held firmly on the core. 3. Soldered connections should be tight and all internal wiring should be securely supported in such a way that operation of the relays is not impeded. 4. Burned or pitted contacts should be smoothed with a contact cleaner (can be purchased from U.S. & S. as UJ39892) unless burned enough to require replacement. (Note - Mere discoloration or blackening of silver contacts does not indicate a need for cleaning). Contacts may be cleaned of dust by suction cleaning and/ or by a mild air blast. PRINTED IN U.S.A. 3 ..., 5. All screws should be drawn down tightly, particularly those holding the contact stacks. 6. The armature should be inspected for the following: Rivets holding the armature insulation plate to the armature should be tight. The arm:1.ture should rest squarely on the backstrap, and the rear edge of the insulation should be as nearly parallel to the surface of the backstrap as possible. The chromium plating should be in good condition, particularly on the hinge surfaces, with no tendency to flake or peel. ANVIL PC DWG. A2586- SH. 16 HIT LIGHTLY WITH HAMMER SWED GE PC DWG. A2586- SH. 95 SQUARE ARMATURE The armature stroke, measured at the rear edge of the insulation, should agree with the value given in the calibration table for each relay in the group. The air gap between the armature and core should agree w.i.th the value given Figure A in the calibration table for each relay in the group. It may be adjusted by bending the armature. (This should be necessary only when replacing arm.1.tures.) The method of bending the armature is shown in Figure A, together with references for the swedge and anvil to be used. Turn the armature over if necessary to bend in oposite direction. After bending arm:tture, check to insure that stroke is still correct. The armature stop should be adjusted so that the armature moves freely, with in. to in. end play in the axis of the hinge. With the armature in the de-energized position it should have vertical play of in. to in. at right angles to the hinge and a horizontal clearance of in. to in. between it and the back stop. B. CLEANING Each relay should have its armature removed and thoroughly cleaned, together with the pole face and backstrap ends, by the use of carbon tetrachloride (fire extinguisher grade), to remove all trace of dirt and sticky material. Wipe dry with chamois or clean lintless cloth. During adjustment, e:,.,_-treme care should be taken to insure that no foreign matter is carried to the assembly by tools or spacers. When the relays are assembled in the case, care should be taken to insure that all dirt or other foreign matter is removed from inside the case. SU-4549, p. 2

4 C. CONTACT ADJUSTMENT 1. General The use of a suitable gram gauge is recommended for measuring spring pressure (can be purchased from U.S. & S. as UJ62103). Measure contact pressure (initial tension of the contact spring against its stop) by applying the tip of the gram gauge just back of the contact buttons, with the contact spring not touching the heel spring. Measure heel spring pressure by applying the gauge just over the point of contact with the armature (de-energized), with all contact springs in normal position; but with any higher heel springs in the same stack slightly lifted. All contacts should be aligned so that they meet squarely. It is not required that all like contacts open or close simultaneously. Contact spril1gs must be free from kinks or sharp bends. Before making any adjustment, a preliminary check should be made to insure that the armature stroke has been correctly adjusted, that each lower heel spring has definite contact with the armature insulation, and that each upper heel, if any, has definite contact with the lower heel spring. Following this, all back contacts should be adjusted, then all heel springs, then all front contacts, as described in parts 2 and 3 of this section. Contact adjustment includes regulating both contact pressure and contact opening. To adjust contact pressure and heel spring pressure, the spring members may be bent slightly close to the stack insulating spacers, but a minimum of such bending should be done. To adjust contact opening, bend only the contact stop Contact Pressures Back contact springs should be adjusted to exert a pressure of 10 to 15 grams against the stop. Each heel spring should be adjusted to exert a pressure of 5 to 10 grams on the armature or on the heel below, in addition to compressing its back contact fully, with armature de-energized. Front contact springs should be adjusted to exert a pressure of 10 to 15 grams against the stop. 3. Contact Openings Measure the opening between each heel contact and its front or its back contact. Front contact openings are measured with the armature in de-energized position and back contact openings with it in fully energized position. The "bridging opening" is defined as the front contact opening measured with the armature near midstroke when the heel and back contacts are just touching. The values of front contact opening, back contact opening, and bridging opening for each individual relay are given in the Calibration Table. SU-4549, p. 3

5 Mv"" D. ELECTRICAL INSPECTION OF INDIVIDUAL RELAYS - (See Table of Group Components and Calibration Table.) 1., Resistance Each winding should have the resistance specified in the Calibration Table. A value appreciably different may indicate that a short circuit or other defect has occurred. 2. Insulation Each assembled relay should be given a megger test between each contact terminal or coil lead and the backstrap and should show at least 10 megohms at each point. 3. Calibration The Calibration Table shows the correct values of calibration for each individual relay in the group. E. ELECTRICAL INSPECTION OF CAPACITORS Certain PL-59 Relay Groups use electrolytic capacitors, which are mounted on the rear of the base. These capacitors have a life limited to several years, the number depending upon the condition of temperature and voltage under which they are used. It will be necessary, therefore, to remove and replace these capacitors at certain intervals, probably not oftener than every three or four years. The condition of the capacitors is indicated by the time measurements made in the operating tests outlined in Section F. If the time measured on the operating tests is not within the specified limits, the individual capacitors should be removed and their capacitance measured. Any on which the capacitance is found to be outside the limits given in the table below should be replaced. The capacitance should be measured with a capacitance bridge, but if a bridge is not available which will measure the high capacitance units, these may be measured by the impedance method shown in Figure B. 110 v. 60"' V A.C.VOLTMETER CAPACITOR UNDER TEST ' A A.C. The potentiometer shaft can be reached for adjustment by removing hex headed screw, UM137935, from the back of the relay base and inserting a screw driver into the tapped hole. Reduce the d-c. supply voltage to 58 volts and note that the lamp continues to flash but not necessarily at the same rate. If the lamp does not flash at this voltage, readjust the potentiometer until it does flash. Then change the d-c. supply voltage to 70 volts and check that the rate of flashing is still between thirty and forty times a minute. When adjusting the potentiometer, note that considerable force is required to turn the potentiometer shaft. If the shaft turns easily, the shaft lock nut should be tightened. SU-4549, p. 10
