The followng pages descrbe the standard desgns and common optons that are avalable. Some specal desgns and optons may requre addtonal engneerng, factory coordnaton, unusual applcaton requrements, or specal manufacturng needs. Hgher mpedances lmt secondary fault currents such that coordnaton wth secondary LV molded case crcut breakers s usually possble. Applcaton Lmtatons The transformers descrbed heren are desgned for the applcaton condtons normally encountered on electrc power dstrbuton systems. As such, they are sutable for use under the usual servce condtons descrbed n ANSI Standard C..00 general requrements for lqud-mmersed dstrbuton, power and regulatng transformers. Consult Eaton for unusual servce condtons such as: Abnormal envronmental condtons. Unusual transent voltages present on the source voltage. Frequent or planned throughfault duty. Planned overloadng unless n strct accordance wth the ANSI loadng gude (C.). Motors whose horsepower ratng s greater than half the transformer kva ratng. Unusual frequency of mpact loadng may occur when supplyng weldng apparatus, electrc arc furnaces, or motors wth cyclcal loads. Loads nvolvng abnormal harmonc or dc current whch may result where apprecable load currents are controlled by sold state or smlar devces. Prevent or mnmze damage to equpment.. Improve the contnuty of servce by selectvely controllng outages. Factors whch affect the protecton scheme are:. Industry standard.. Customer s specfcaton.. Customer s system confguraton (avalable fault current, system voltage, system connecton, etc.). Avalablty of equpment. The frst consderaton n determnng the ampere ratng of a fuse s to verfy that the fuse n queston s capable of wthstandng typcal nrush currents wthout element damage. When a transformer s energzed, t s exposed to very large currents for very short perods of tme, these currents are known as magnetzng nrush (or fuse wthstand), and cold load pckup and are a result of the transformer s magnetc crcut, the electrcal system confguraton, and the connected load. The second consderaton for selectng the fuse ampere ratng s the maxmum load current the fuse s expected to carry wthout damage. Transformer fusng tables avalable from the manufacturer normally lst the range of overload provded. If the longtme mnmum melt current for a partcular fuse sze s known, t can be compared to the transformer rated current to determne the exact amount of overload permtted. An ambent of 0ºC s generally assumed for applcaton tables. Care should be taken when fuses are appled n hgher ambent condtons, whch wll reduce the amount of overload permtted. An example of a hgh ambent condton used frequently n dstrbuton transformers s that of current lmtng fuses n dry-well cansters. To accommodate the overload and deratng factors referred to, the followng ratos are used on general-purpose CL fuses. Nameplate current ratng of fuse/nameplate current ratng of transformer =. for enclosures surrounded by ar (EFD, Clp mount, Arc-Strangler) or =. for enclosures surrounded by ol (cansters). Deratng factors are not appled to expulson or backup CL fuses snce hgh temperature has mnmal effect on ther operaton. Fnally, t s necessary to verfy that the fuse current ratng under consderaton wll, n fact, operate pror to the transformer sustanng any permanent thermal damage (conductor or nsulaton burnng or meltng). Ths s done by comparng the total clearng characterstcs of the fuse n queston wth the ANSI (I t) damage lne. It s mportant that the total clearng characterstcs of the devce under consderaton le to the left of the damage lne for all expected values of fault current. Note that most all fuse characterstcs wll cross the damage lne at some pont. It s mportant to make ths occur at the lowest possble value of the current. The nterruptng ratng of a devce s a measure of the maxmum symmetrcal fault current at whch the devce can successfully clear a fault condton wthout excessve damage to tself, the equpment t s protectng, or the surroundng envronment. It s extremely crtcal that the nterruptng ratng of a devce be greater than the maxmum avalable symmetrcal fault current. For devces appled to the transformer prmary, the maxmum fault current must be suppled by the utlty snce ths value s dependent on the electrcal system confguraton. Avalable wth ether overloadsensng or fault sensng. 00 AIC at. kv, 00 AIC at. kv. Bay-O-Net fuse assembles are used to protect transformers and dstrbuton systems. They are desgned for use n pad-mounted or sub-surface dstrbuton transformers flled wth transformer ol or approved equvalent. The assembles combne the ease of hotstck operaton wth the safety of deadfront constructon. Removal of the fuse holder from the assembly ndcates that the apparatus s electrcally dsconnected. It also allows convenent fuse element nspecton and replacement. When typcal safety practces are followed, the assembles can be load-break operated for workng on the transformer secondary; changng dstrbuton voltage wth dual voltage swtches or tap changers; or dsconnectng the apparatus from the lne. The optonal Flapper Bay-O-Net Assembly (avalable as sdewallmounted only) ncludes a flapper valve nsde the housng, whch closes when the fuse holder s removed, thus mnmzng ol spllage. Table.0-. Hgher contnuous current ratngs can be acheved by connectng two fuses n parallel. The current-lmtng fuse s used n transformers to protect and solate faulted equpment. When connected n seres wth a low current prmary protecton devce, the fuse becomes an element of a two-part protecton system that fves a full range of fault protecton.
