INTRODUCTION Ths specfcaton covers the requrements for the applcaton of AMPLIMITE HDP--22 Crmp Snap--In Contact Connectors wth all--plastc contact retenton and the 22DF Contacts used n the connectors. These connectors wll mate wth any sze 22 Submnature D connector that has dmensons complyng wth MIL--C AMPLIMITE HDP--22 Connectors are avalable n shell szes 1 through 5. These connectors are desgned wth cavty dentfcaton and features for easy polarzaton and matng. See Fgure 2. The connectors have centerlnes of 2.29 x 1.98 mm [.090 x.078 n.] for shell szes 1, 2, and 3; 2.41 x 1.98 mm [.095 x.078 n.] for shell sze 4; and 2.41 x 2.08 mm [.095 x.082 n.] for shell sze 5. The contacts wll accept a wre sze range of 28 to 22 AWG wth an nsulaton dameter range of mm [ n.]. The wre strp length shall be 3.97 mm [5/32 n.] f hand strpped and 3.56 mm [.140 n.] f dgtal strppng equpment s used. AMPLIMITE HDP--22 Connectors have a varety of shelded and unshelded cable clamps, covers, mountng hardware, retaners, lockng posts, screwlocks, slde and sprng latches, and latchng blocks to choose from for your mountng requrements. Contacts, nner and outer ferrules can be appled by hand or machne, dependng on your termnaton requrements. REQUIREMENTS 3.1. Storage Due to the desgn of the connector, some corroson may occur on the metal shell near the crmp tabs and on the ends of the shell. Ths condton does not affect the aesthetcs, form, ft, or functon of the connector or adjacent components and s consdered to be acceptable by Tyco Electroncs. A. Ultravolet Lght Prolonged exposure to ultravolet lght may deterorate the chemcal composton used n the housng materal. B. Reel Storage When usng reeled contacts, store col wound reels horzontally and traverse wound reels vertcally. C. Shelf Lfe The contacts and housngs should reman n the shppng contaners untl ready for use to prevent deformaton to those components. The components should be used on a frst n, frst out bass to avod storage contamnaton that could adversely affect sgnal transmssons. D. Chemcal Exposure Do not store contacts, housngs, or accessores near any chemcals lsted below as they may cause stress corroson crackng n the components. Specal Characterstcs AMPLIMITE HDP--22 Connectors come n a varety of szes for your producton needs and are adaptable to a varety of mountng and hardware requrements. See paragraph 3.4 for contact postons. Usng a keystone matng face confguraton, these connectors ncorporate multple polarzaton and matng algnment features, allowng flexblty n system desgn. The plug connector has an ntegral hood whch protects the nserted pn contacts. See Fgure 2. Crmped DF--22 Contacts, wth retenton shoulders, are nserted nto the cavtes n the BACK of the connector housng and snap nto place. The cavty rows are number--coded for your convenence. If your desgn does not requre the use of all cavtes, the contacts should be dstrbuted evenly throughout the connector. Rev H 3 of 17

Some of the nstructons were wrtten for the AMPLIMITE HDP--20 Connector product lne, however, HDP--22 connectors use the same outer shell sze, enablng the same accessores to be used wth both product lnes. Refer to Paragraph 2.5, Instructonal Materal, for procedures on usng the followng assembly and mountng hardware. Before securng cable clamp halves, make sure you have suffcent slack n the wre to prevent the wre from beng taut. A. Plastc Cable Clamp Cable clamp assembly kts are avalable n straght/45_ and straght/90_ versons. The clamp assembles can be mated usng sprng latches and latchng blocks, or usng screwlocks and retaners. B. Metal Cable Clamp Metal RFI/EMI Shelded Cable Clamp Assembles come n two--pece kts, and are avalable n both straght--ext and 90_--ext versons. The straght--ext sheld s attached to the connector usng saddle screws. The 90_--ext sheld s attached usng slde latches and screws. C. Unversal Cable Clamp Unversal cable clamp kts are avalable for sze 3 connectors ONLY. 9 3.5. Wre Selecton and Preparaton A. Types The contact wll accept dscrete copper sold, fused--stranded, or stranded conductor wre wthn the range of 28 through 22 AWG. B. Preparaton Poston the crmp ferrule over the cable jacket before strppng wre. The wre must be strpped to the dmenson provded n Fgure 6. CAUTION! Do not nck, scrape, or cut the wre conductor durng the strppng operaton. Fgure 6 provdes nformaton on nsulaton strp lengths as determned by the sze contact used. Also lsted are acceptable wre nsulaton outsde dameters for the contacts, crmp wdth, and crmp heght. 10 3.7. Crmped Contact Requrements A. Axal Concentrcty The axal concentrcty of a crmped contact shall be wthn an area defned by the dameter of a crcle that has the same center as the centerlne of the contact. The dameter of the crcle wll depend on the wre sze. The contact, ncludng the cutoff tab and burr, shall pass through a mm [.625 n.] long, straght tube wth an nsde dameter of 1.60 mm [.063 n.]. After nsertng the matng end of the crmped contact nto the tube, the contact shall pass through the tube wthout nterference between the nsde dameter of the tube and the contact nsulaton barrel or the cutoff tab. 11 Perodc nspectons must be made to ensure crmped contact formaton s consstent as referenced n Fgure 10. C. Crmp Locaton For optmum crmp effectveness, the crmp must be wthn the area shown and must meet the crmp requrements provded n Fgure 6. Effectve crmp length shall be 2.06 mm [.081 n.] mnmum, and s defned as that porton of the wre barrel, excludng bellmouth(s), fully formed by the crmpng tool. Instructons for adjustng, reparng, and nspectng tools are packaged wth the tools. D. Conductor Extenson The conductor may extend beyond the wre barrel to the maxmum shown. E. Wre Barrel Seam The wre barrel seam must be closed wth no evdence of loose wre strands vsble n the seam. F. Conductor/Insulaton The conductor and nsulaton must both be vsble n the area between the nsulaton barrel and the wre barrel. G. Bellmouths Front and rear bellmouths shall be formed and adhere to the dmensons gven. H. Cutoff Tab The cutoff tab shall not be longer than 0.25 mm [.010 n.]. I. Burrs The burr on the cutoff tab shall not exceed 0.13 mm [.005 n.]. 12 J. Flash The wre barrel flash shall not exceed the dmensons shown n Secton X--X. See Fgure 10. K. Straghtness The contact, ncludng the cutoff tab and burr, shall not be bent above or below the datum lne more than the amount shown. Fgure 11 5_ Max Do not over -tghten, or use excessve force n matng connector housngs or mountng hardware. Push testng s not recommended as t could damage the lockng tnes n the housng. Do NOT re -use damaged contacts. Contacts are not reparable once a termnaton has been made. Any defectve contact should be removed and replaced wth a new one. Damaged contacts can be removed from the housng by usng Inserton/Extracton Tool Refer to Instructon Sheet for extracton procedures. 4. E28476, and Certfed by CSA Internatonal n Fle Number LR These connectors are also Ml--Spec Qualfed wth MIL--C TOOLING A lstng of toolng recommendatons coverng the full wre sze range s provded n Fgure 12. The lstng ncludes sem--automatc and automatc machnes for power asssted applcaton of strp form contacts. Modfed desgns and addtonal toolng concepts may be avalable to meet other applcaton requrements. S Applcators Applcators are desgned for the full wre sze range of strp--fed, precson formed contacts, and provde for hgh volume, heavy duty producton requrements. 13 Each applcator s shpped wth a metal dentfcaton tag attached. DO NOT remove ths tag or dsregard the nformaton on t. Also, a packet of assocated paperwork s ncluded n each applcator shpment. Ths nformaton should be read before usng the applcator; then t should be stored n a clean, dry area near the applcator for future reference. Some changes may have to be made to the applcators to run n all related power unts. Contact the Toolng Assstance Center number at the bottom of page 1 for specfc changes. S Power Unts A power unt s an automatc or sem--automatc devce used to assst n the applcaton of a product. Power unt ncludes the power source used to supply the force or power to an applcator. The Model K AMP -O -LECTRIC Termnatng Machne PN has been superseded by the Model G Termnatng Machne PN for new applcatons. For exstng applcatons, the Model K s stll recommended because of the large number of nstalled machnes. S Hand Tools Hand crmpng tools that accommodate the full wre range are desgned for prototype and low--volume applcatons such as repar of damaged contacts. S Crmpng De Assembles Crmpng De Assembles for crmpng the contacts or ferrules are avalable for the full wre or cable sze range. They are desgned for easy nstallaton and removal n hand crmpng tool frame assembles or applcators. S Expanson Tools Expanson tools are recommended for expandng the cable ext hole n the sheldng enclosure to ease nserton of the jacketed cable nto the enclosure. S Inserton/Extracton Tools Inserton/Extracton tools are desgned for contacts crmped to small fragle wre. They are desgned to stablze the contact durng nserton. The extracton tp s used to release the contacts nsde the connector housngs wthout damagng the housng or contacts.
