2 A Message From The President March was a blur for me! Not sure how I could have managed a job besides all my Porsche events and trips, plus I have now joined SCORE, Service Corps of Retired Executives, and will now mentor & counsel new business start-ups, small business owners needing help and any referrals from SBA, Small Business Administration. Shirley has always maintained I am a compulsive volunteer. March winds (and cold) weren't too bad as I managed to spend 4 days at Amelia Island Concours d' Elegance, register for the Parade at Traverse City, MI, participate in the Garage Crawl, and finally drive in a Rezoom DE at Barber MSP. Yes, it was a busy but fun month, except of course when Shirley's dad passed away and we spent a week in Johnson City, TN, and then came back to take Shirley to Huntsville to spend a week with our daughter who was having medical issues. Seems I kept a travel bag ready to go all month. April promises to have some fun events also with another trip back to Barber MSP April 6-7 for the Porsche 250 Grand Am race, Continental Tire series race, and Indy car race. Porsche will again have a Porsche Corral parking area (no rain please) and a hospitality tent next to the track. Then our regular club meeting at Sportsman Grille in Cool Springs on April 9, followed by a tour led by Mike Gillespie to Marcy Jo's Mealhouse somewhere near Columbia, TN on April 13. Then don't forget the Master's golf tournament that same week-end, and Spring Thing April put on by Smokey Mt Region in Townsend, TN. I want to offer a special thanks to Wicky Laurie of Renntag Motorwerks, Andrew Heath of Music City P & A, and Bob Percell of Fritz's Garage for opening their doors on Saturday, March 16 for our Garage Crawl. We had a great time, and learned more about these local garages. If you know of others we could visit, let me know. Thanks for your membership and participation in club activities and I hope to see you in April. Mike Moody! PAGE 2

7 Sensuous Steel, on display from June 14-September 15, 2013 will celebrate the Art Deco influence on automobile design. Inspired by the Frist Center s historic Art Deco building, this exhibition will feature spectacular automobiles and motorcycles from the 1930s and 40s that exemplify the classic elegance, luxurious materials, and iconography of motion characterizing vehicles influenced by the Art Deco style. Fascination with automobiles transcends age, gender, and environment. While today automotive manufacturers often strive for economy and efficiency, there was a time when elegance reigned. Influenced by the Art Deco movement that began in Paris in the early 1920s and propelled to prominence in 1927 with the success of the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, automakers embraced the sleek new streamlined forms and aircraft-inspired materials, creating memorable automobiles that still thrill all who see them. The exhibition will feature 18 automobiles and three motorcycles from some of the most important collectors and collections in the United States Sensuous Steel is organized for the Frist Center by guest curator Ken Gross, former director of the Petersen Automotive Museum. Gross served as guest curator for The Allure of the Automobile, a nationally acclaimed exhibition displayed at Atlanta s High Museum of Art in 2010; additionally, he developed a revised version of the exhibition for the Portland Art Museum the following year. Most recently, Gross curated Speed: The Art of the Performance Automobile exhibited at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts in Salt Lake City and the opening exhibition for LeMay America s Car Museum in Tacoma, Wash. A highly respected automotive journalist for over 40 years, Gross writes for numerous publications including AutoWeek, Playboy, Hagerty s Magazine, Sports Car Market, Motor Trend Classic, Popular Mechanics, msnautos.com, Old Cars Weekly, and The Rodder s Journal. A noted authority on automobiles, he has judged at the Pebble Beach Concours d Elegance for 24 years. Gross also judges at the Amelia Island Concours and was the Chief Judge at the Rodeo Drive Concours d Elegance. Additionally, Gross has received many awards including the 2009 IAMA Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2009 Lee Iacocca Award, the 2008 Washington Auto Press Golden Quill Award, the Society of Automotive Historians Cugnot Award, and The James Valentine Memorial Award for excellence in automotive historical research. CAR CLUB SUNDAY At Sensuous Steel On Sunday August 4 th, the members of the Musik Stadt Region PCA will gather at the Frist Center to enjoy Car Club Sunday. During Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles, one car club each Sunday will be able to make reservations to drive their cars to the Frist Center parking lot before it opens to the general public at 11:30am. The parking lot and building open at noon. At noon, we will enter the Frist Center to enjoy a pre-ordered boxed lunch in the Frist Center dining hall. After lunch, car club members will be the first visitors that day to see this one of a kind exhibit. Cost for the boxed lunch and exhibit will be $23 per person. Reservations and prepayment will be made to the Musik Stadt PCA. Parking is a separate fee and is $2 first two hours and $1 every hour afterwards and paid to the parking attendant. Payment and reservation must be made no later than July 13th. If you have any questions, contact Joe Questel at joe@questel.net. 12 Member Spotlight -- Ed Rufo Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan with a joint proclamation commending the organization for its support of military members and families, and by extension, the larger community outside of Fort Campbell. Taking flight CLARKSVILLE, TENN. As Fort Campbell troops were deploying to Iraq in late February and early March 2003, a new organization called Operation Eagle s Nest was being born out of that deployment. Ten years later, as the 101st Airborne Division once again has troops in harm s way overseas, the organization continues in its mission, which has never changed. The formal mission statement, written by then-maj. Gen. David H. Petraeus shortly before he deployed in March 2003, reads, Operation Eagles Nest is a community initiative of the Military Affairs Committees of Clarksville, Oak Grove and Hopkinsville to assist soldiers and their families assigned to the 101st Airborne Division and other units at Fort Campbell Kentucky. The informal mission statement, however, is truer to the heart of the organization and what it does: Taking care of the nest while the Eagles are away. On Tuesday, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of Operation Iraqi Freedom, OEN was honored by both Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers and OEN began when Argentine-born local business leader Ed Rufo was at a Chamber of Commerce function in early The Adopt-a-Unit program was asking for volunteers to take a unit, and Rufo chose the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, little knowing how massive a task an aviation brigade represented. When he found out how big a project he had taken on, he was overwhelmed to the point of making what seems like a counterintuitive decision. I couldn t take on something like that myself, Rufo deadpanned, so I thought I would just adopt the whole post and raise money to help the soldiers and families of the 101st. I called Gen. Petraeus. He was the CG (commanding general) at the time, and we knew each other from my work on the Code of Ethics program and the Better Business Bureau on behalf of soldiers. 13 Garage Crawl - March 16, 2013 By: Mike Moody Saturday morning was warm and beautiful, and a great day to visit 3 independent garages in Nashville specializing in Porsche services. We began with Renntag Motorwerks run by Wicky Laurie in north Nashville. We had an estimated Porsche s make the Crawl, which was an excellent turn-out. Wicky gave us a tour of his shop and some service hints and explained his service offerings. After a short visit at Renntag, we headed to our next stop in mid-town. Next stop was Music City P & A owned by Andrew Heath. Again, Andrew spoke to our group and explained his service offerings and showed us around the shop. After a short visit, we headed south. Our final stop was to Fritz s Garage owned by Bob Percell in Franklin. Bob spoke to the group and showed us an almost restored wide-body 993 owned by one of his customers. It was a beautiful car and the perfect end to our morning. After a short visit, we headed to the Bunganut Pig for lunch.! PAGE 13
14 Garage Crawl Continued We want to thank our hosts at these 3 shops that many of our members use, and thank everyone for coming out for a beautiful day and showing off their beautiful cars. Wicky Laurie Andrew Heath Bob Percell Free Stuff Mike Moody has plenty of Panorama s from the past two years if you are new to PCA and would like these old issues to catch up on your reading. He also has factory 911 posters of the new 991 model looking for a good home. 16 United SportsCar Racing Explained What's in a name? In the case of United SportsCar Racing, everything. On March 14, 2013 United SportsCar Racing was unveiled as the new premier series beginning in The name was chosen as a result of the specific meaning each word has. United is powerful and universally recognized for its true meanings; unity, collaboration and synergy. In the short term it represents the uniting of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón. However, long term it represents the uniting of fans, partners, teams, drivers and sportscar racing as a whole. The meaning of the word is intended to follow a similar evolution as it has for the United States. Originally it stood for uniting the colonies and today is just as relevant because it stands for uniting the people. The words SportsCar and Racing were chosen because they are descriptive words that allow existing and potential fans to easily understand what we do. United SportsCar Racing also unveiled a new logo a modern interpretation of a helmet. The goal of the logo was develop a mark that was unique and has the potential to stand on its own, like the Nike swoosh and the Apple logo. The helmet was chosen because it s an unowned icon of racing. Drivers are recognized by their helmet designs but also have an emotional connection to their helmet. As Emanuele Pirro once said How can you expect it to protect you, if you don t protect it. The design of the helmet combines signature elements of tracks on which the series competes. The sweeping middle section represents a road while the upper portion represents tracks such as Daytona International Speedway, a combined oval and infield road course or roval. The lower portion represents the road and street courses the series will race on such as Sebring International Raceway and Road Atlanta. In addition, IMSA was announced as the sole sanctioning body moving into 2014 and the logo was refreshed to align with the new brand ecosystem. IMSA was originally created in 1969 by John Bishop and NASCAR s Bill France Sr., to produce high-level, professional sportscar racing in North America and has now come full circle as a result of the merger. Some of the world s best and most popular drivers have competed under the IMSA banner for more than 40 years. The goal of the logo refresh was to remain true to the brands heritage but update it to fit the modern and aspirational goals of the new brand. As part of the refresh, the colors were changed from the current blue, red and white to red, black and white, the original colors from 1969 and current colors of the new brand. In 2014, IMSA will sanction United SportsCar Racing, Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, Cooper Tire Prototype Lites, IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge, Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada, Ferrari Challenge and Lamborghini Super Trofeo. To learn more about United SportsCar Racing and enter for a chance to win 2 tickets to the 2014 Rolex 24 At Daytona and officially licensed merchandise, visit Editors Note: Thanks to Mike Gillespie for the stories on United SportsCar Racing, Frist Center s Sensuous Steel Art Deco Automobile display and the Car Club Sunday at the Frist.!
