3 A Message From The President Being a PCA fanatic, I often find myself pitching the benefits of PCA and Musik- Stadt Region membership to any nonmember I bump into at car events, in the Kroger parking lot, and so on. PCA membership is truly a bargain when you consider the great Panorama magazine, our Musik-Stadt Region newsletter and all the events we offer to all members. Besides our monthly dinner meetings, we have monthly drive and eat events, annual banquet, annual Concours, and breakfast meet-ups during the cold months. And best of all, I get to meet a lot of great Porsche owners who I otherwise would not have met. Without PCA membership, I would not have discovered the fun of HSDE (high speed driving events) at Barber, Road Atlanta, TX World Speedway and the new Corvette track in Bowling Green...and maybe the Nashville Superspeedway again if anyone buys it and reopens a track close to home. I have met a lot of Musik-Stadt Region members who are great friends and always fun to hang out with in the pits, as well as other new friends made who come to the tracks from GA, FL, AL, KY and so on. I get a new knee on Oct 6 so I can get back on the track next year. Consider coming out and find out how much fun your Porsche is on the track. And no, your car can take the track...after all, it is a Porsche Also without PCA membership, how would you find out about all the other car events going on in the area, like the AACA car show at the Factory in Franklin on Oct 4th. It is open to all classes of cars, including sports cars, antiques, customs and so on. It is a great show with lots of cars, and you can enter on-site and maybe win a prize. We also have a dinner meeting annually at Lane Motor Museum which is a fantastic car museum in downtown Nashville. If you think about all the benefits, think about becoming a PCA fanatic also. We belong to a great car club, in fact the largest single marquee car club in the World And if you were to sell your Porsche but wanted to stay a member until your next purchase, you can do that. Don't let your membership lapse and miss out on anything going on. As for those who purchased club polo shirts, you can pick up at either the club dinner meeting on Feb 13th or at the Drive to Tullahoma and the Beech Party on Oct 17th. Thanks to board member Rick Arnemann, we also have the benefit of a new shirt or jacket most years at very good prices. PCA membership matters Mike PAGE 3

6 Sports Car Renascence? By: Ken Maurer, Musik Stadt PCA It s been said before, but still I can t help but feel we ve been living in something of a performance car golden era. There are several sporty options out there, even if not all of them are outright sports cars, and the lines between muscle cars, pony cars and sports cars continue to blur. It amazes me to find muscle cars that can turn and stop, and sports cars that can run some impressive 1/4 mile times. Yet, over the course of the past couple of years now, I can t help but feel we re starting to see some tarnish on this golden era. A case in point, I was reading an article on the upcoming revision of the Chevy Camaro. Granted, this isn t a sports car, but it s certainly a performance car, and while I ve never driven one, I understand the handling isn t half bad. In the piece, the engineers had made mention more than once of the 200 pound weight savings they found. Yet, this beast was still shown to weigh almost 3700 pounds pounds Ditto on the new Mustang. Turning to the far East, the well known Nissan GT-R is nearly a whopping two tons. Two tons for a performance car. Well, I can t argue with the numbers these cars put down. All are faster than my 2007 Cayman. I m sure all would turn faster lap times than my Cayman at probably any track in existence. Yes, my poor 2.7 liter Cayman is hopelessly outgunned in today s horsepower war. But you know what, that just doesn t matter. You can throw sticky tires, fancy suspensions, tons of horsepower and more computer processing ability than it would take to send James Kirk at warp 9 on the Enterprise, but that won t make a car any more fun. Faster, probably, but not more fun. Worse, if you push such a vehicle on the street and overstep it s performance envelope, you re likely to find yourself in a truly frightening position, going way too fast with not enough control. To me, throwing all that weight around seems more like a white knuckle game of pitch and catch as opposed to the wonderful symbiotic relationship that should exist between a sports car, it s driver and the road. When regular production cars are coming loaded with more power than race cars in the GTLM and GT3 categories, I can t help but wonder if we ve gone just a tad overboard. Are we car enthusiasts in general really enjoying a oneness with the open road, or are we just trying to beat the road into submission and bend it to our will? That led me to think how lucky we are with our Porsches. Rarely the most powerful car in any given bracket, it seems to me Porsche has made an art out of making their vehicles far more than the sum of their parts; far more than a powerful motor, sticky tires or a trick suspension. Power delivery is more important that peak horsepower; balance more important than peak grip. Of course some models have all of those sticky tires, trick suspensions and powerful motors, but it all exists in a symbiotic relationship, instead of having one aspect simply overpower the rest. It s that balance that, to me, makes a Porsche truly special. I m certainly not trying to knock anyone who enjoys the other performance cars that are amiable to day. To each his or her own, and that is what makes this era truly special in my eyes. At the end of the day, the important thing is that we all get out there an enjoy what we have. In these days of cooling temperatures and turning colors, take the long way home; go for that back country road drive, or head to the mountains to see the turning leaves. Enjoy the drive, and listen to your Porsche as it communicates with you along the journey. It s hard to say how long such vehicles may be around, and the true shame would be if we were to miss out on enjoying them while they sit in our garage. PAGE 6

17 1995 PORSCHE 911 (993) OWNER: Guy Richie Contact Info: Cell: Many enthusiasts believe this is the best Porsche ever made I am the third owner of this 20 year old beauty. I purchased the car in April, 2004, and have put about 20,000 miles on it. Regular maintenance and service has been performed by the recognized local experts mentioned to the right. I have all service records. The car runs perfectly and looks very good. Original paint shows signs of normal wear. Originally sold from Porsche of Orlando, this car suffered a recall-related fire in the passenger compartment in 2001/2002. Repairs were performed by the second owner and included floor mats, carpet, door panel & passenger seat. I have photos of damage and repair info. At that time, the state of Florida issued a rebuilt title. Tennessee has no such designation so when I bought the car, a TN salvaged title, was issued. Thoroughbred Motorcars and Renntag Motorwerks have commented many times that they would have never known there d been any damage to the car until I told them, such is the quality of the repairs and subsequent upkeep. What this means for you is that you can own a very nice, 1995, 911, (993) well below normal market value. Have a look and see for yourself. Vehicle characteristics Black exterior Saddle leather interior 58,365 miles Air-cooled & Tiptronic Hard top w/ sunroof Michelin Pilot SuperSports and wheels have less than 1,000 miles Everything original except K&N air filter, stereo, & replica 997 turbo wheels.
