Meet at O Charley s, 100 Eastpark Dr. in Brentwood at 9:15AM for the Safety Meeting (all participants must attend). The tour will depart at 9:30 and proceed through Kingston Springs, White Bluff, Charlotte and Ashland City ending at the new Bavarian Bierhaus, Opry Mills for lunch. 2 A Message From The President The 2017 Porsche Parade is history and according to PCA it was the most well attended Parade in history. For me and most members of Musik-Stadt there was never a thought of making a round-trip of 4,372 miles to attend. According to Mapquest it was a 30 hour drive to get there. Of course with my two Valentines (Donna and my radar detector) I m sure I could have beat their predicted time. Oh well, wait until next year and next year s Parade should be great. And within reach for Musik-Stadt! On a recent PCA leadership conference call it was revealed that the 2018 Porsche Parade is going to be held at the Tan-Tar-A Golf and Spa Resort in the Missouri Ozarks. At one time this was a premier Marriott resort but has recently been absorbed into Jimmy Buffet s Margaritaville hotel group. While the resort will not be operating as a Margaritaville property at the time of Parade there will still be some activities with a Margaritaville theme. It should be a terrific Parade especially when you start drooling over driving some new mountain roads. Their should be something for everyone. Driving, spa treatments, fishing, hiking. Start planning now. There are bound to be some Musik-Stadt members going. Staying with the Porsche Parade theme the 2019 Parade will be held at one of the Waldorf Astoria resorts in Boca Raton. South Florida in July? It will be toasty to be sure but the hotel rates should be affordable. The drives and rallies? I think it could be a challenge to find some interesting roads in an area where the highest hill is the land-fill. It might be an opportunity for some of us to reward our navigators with some well-deserved pampering in a Waldorf spa. I m just saying. Locally we have some fun drives coming up. August 12 is a drive west of the city on some fun roads we drove last year through White Bluff, Charlotte and Ashland City. Our drive will end at the Bavarian Bierhaus for lunch at noon. Can t make the drive? Come out and join us for lunch at the Bierhaus. Just call my cell ( ) the morning of the drive and tell me if you re meeting us for lunch. There s also a terrific tour to Gainesboro this fall led by Don Wirth. Don and I scouted this route last week and there are a couple of roads that were just made for a Musik-Stadt tour. Thanks for volunteering to develop and lead this drive Don! Do you have a suggested drive that you want to lead? Let me know and it will happen. I believe Joe Questel is still working on a Bourbon Trail overnight trip into the Bluegrass state and Mike Moody is considering a drive to include the Cherahola Skyway and Tail of the Dragon. 5 The Sands Of Time By K Maurer Humans are funny creatures. We give objects various attributes and sometimes become irrationally attached to them. We assign personalities to creations that have no such thing; yet it is very real in our psyche. Cars are probably one of the biggest areas where we do this. I know I have and at times it s caused me to make less than rational decisions. First to purchase something my head says is a bad idea, then to hold on to it even when my head continues to tell me it s a bad idea. The battle between the head and the heart is ages old, yet I was again reminded of this during my return home recently. Not too long ago my mom passed away, and my dad is now going through the process of restructuring his life, and as one can imagine it s not so easy. One of the items on the list recently was cutting back from two vehicles to one. My dad has taught me a lot over the years, and while with a family of a wife and six kids there wasn t any room in the budget for more frivolous expenses like sports cars, he nonetheless did manage to pass down a love of automotive things. He taught me the basics; how to change oil, air filters, fuel filters and the importance of routine maintenance and care. Moreover, he taught me, both by his words and his example, to take pride in what I had no matter what it was. With this in mind, it was with difficulty that I watched my dad teach me another one of life lessons - know when to let go and move on. And a second, while moving on may be tough, it doesn t mean that what me move on to can t be enjoyable. You see, for the past decade or more really, my dad has typically had some sort of pickup truck that he liked, and a separate car to use around town that was more comfortable and would get better gas mileage. While my mom was in good health, it was usually easier for her to get in and out of the truck, substituting climbing up into then strategically (and slowly) falling out of the truck for scrunching down into, and struggling up out of, a car. But, as my mom s health worsened, the improved ride of the car became more important, and the scrunching and climbing out became easier than trying to climb up into a truck. Thus after my mom passed, I was a bit surprised to see my dad not driving the truck like he used to. As we talked, he told me he d reached a point that he just starting to feel more comfortable driving a car rather than a truck, and he thought it was time to sell both and move on to one, new vehicle. Yet, the more we talked, the more I realized (and he even directly told me) this wasn t something he really wanted to do, but something he felt he had to do for now and his future. That really struck me, as I tend to be of the mindset of avoiding things I do not want to do like the plague. Not only that, but heaven forbid I get rid of something that is still entrenched firmly in my heart. But I have to admit, the plane logic of my dad s argument struck home with me, as I see areas where I should make similarly clearminded decisions. I m still not sure what all this really means, but it s funny how even when time passes and we are in adulthood, our parents are still teaching us lessons through the decisions they make and the way they live their lives. I have to thank my dad, not only for instilling in me the seeds that became a passion for automobiles for me, but also now for teaching me that there are times to follow the heart, and times to follow the head. I only hope that I can walk the line as delicately and successfully as he. PAGE 5
