2 Musik Stadt Region PCA New Member Mixer AT THE ALL NEW PORSCHE OF NASHVILLE LOCATED AT 1576 MALLORY LANE, BRENTWOOD, Musik Stadt Region PCA is hosting a New Member Mixer on October 8 th, starting at 6:30pm, to welcome our newest members who have joined Musik Stadt Region PCA this year, and to show appreciation to current members. We will be gathering in the new showroom of Porsche of Nashville to admire their new facility and see the latest in offerings from Porsche. Everyone is invited to take a tour through the new facility and to hear from the staff about all the new opportunities this new facility will bring to their customers. There will be Hors d oeuvres provided by the German and Austrian restaurant Viener Fest in Nashville. There will also be door prizes, food and fun for all. 3 A Message From The President The past several months have been a blast. The tour of the Frist Museum and the Lane Motor Museum were stunning, with such great and classic cars on display. If you missed us at Cars & Coffee on Sept 7, you missed seeing our new tent, along with our Porsche club banner flags on display and in use. We met with 8 non-pca members who pledged to join PCA and Musik Stadt Region. Last time I checked 2 had joined, and we sent a couple other folks back to the Porsche dealer for their free first year's membership. All in all, a great recruiting effort with thanks to Lynn Gratkowski, Kent Kersten and Rick Arnemann who helped with everything. Thanks also to Greg Morken for a great visit to Fall Creek Falls State Park. October will be no exception with the AACA Antique and Classic Car Show at Cool Springs Mall (Sears end) on Oct 5. The following Tuesday is our New Member Social at the new Porsche dealership. This event is open to all members and we will have tours of the facility, meet the staff that runs the place, and have some German food. On Oct 19, we tour down to Tullahoma and meet up with Heart of Dixie Region to visit the Beechcraft Fly-In and Museum. More information is elsewhere in this newsletter so please join us. Martin Foglman's in Madison, AL for tech talk, car talk and of course the brats on Nov 2. Contact Dan Martin if you want to drive down with our group to this event Nov 2. 6 Installing A Hydraulic Lift In Your Garage By Kent Kersten the lift in case I want to do any rearranging later on, but maybe in a few months I will take that next step. The lift is very stable when in operation and I have had no doubts or second thoughts about getting under it for extended periods to work on a car. It can take a few minutes of fiddling to get the arms adjusted just right if you use it for multiple vehicles, but this is no big deal compared to dealing with jacks & stands. Also you will want to buy yourself a few hockey pucks (yes, hockey pucks) to serve as cushions on the pads against the jack points or your vehicle. If you re really anal you can buy the special slotted pads that mate with your Porsche s jack points but there is really no need for that. A few years ago I started doing light work on my cars. Over time the jobs gradually ramped up in difficulty and I was spending more time in my garage on my knees, which didn t appreciate the extra attention. There was also only so high I could jack up a car and put it on jack stands, so some jobs were impossible or at least more difficult. Finally I knew I had to bite the bullet and invest in a hydraulic lift. This was not an easy decision as I have a small garage with a low ceiling. There is not room for the ideal lift, which to me is a large two-post system that leaves the entirety of the car s underside accessible. That limited me to a mid-rise lift and one that fit under the car, i.e. had no posts on the sides that would have eliminated one parking space in the garage (not a popular choice with any spouse). The lift I chose was a Bend-Pak model MD-6XP. I bought it from Automotive Service Equipment (ASE) of Torrington, CT. I paid $1,915 for the lift with free shipping. The thing weighs about 900 pounds. This lift is talked about frequently on forums like rennweb and most everyone who owns one really likes it. So far I have been using mine for about 8 weeks on several of my cars and it has worked flawlessly. Even though it is a scissor lift the majority of the underside of my cars, including my 911, are accessible. Several posts are available to mount on the adjustable arms which can give you an additional 5 of lift or clearance for areas of the car that are less accessible while on the lift. For extra space the horizontal bar can be cut out, which would be necessary if you were dropping the transmission on your 911. The lift is about 5 tall when flat and my 911 wouldn t clear that, so I had to build some wooden ramps to go over it. This was a simple project that just took an afternoon and about $150 of wood and parts from Home Depot. I decided not to jackhammer my garage floor and make a cutout for I will be happy to demonstrate the lift and talk you through installation and setup should you be interested. Where have all the Cayenne and Panamera owners gone? Sounds like a song, but have you noticed how many owners of these great cars show up a club events? Yes, very few. Come out and join the fun, as a Porsche is a Porsche, is a. Cayenne s have been around since 2003 and continue to out-sell any other model. Panamera has only been around since 2009 but total of 100,000 have been built so far. These are great cars and some of our members take their cars/suv s to DE s and enjoy their great handling and acceleration, Agree! Where ARE all the Cayennes and Panameras? I used to track my Cayenne S (3 track days), and now I track my Panamera 4S (8 track days so far.) I even autocrossed one season in the Panamera with SCCA, until I figured out that I can t compete with the rice rocket drivers who set up the courses. (Chicago boxes penalize long wheelbases and wide tracks.) With either car, I was the only one with that model Porsche at every one of 11 track days (and just as many autocrosses.) That was true even at the PCA sponsored events. Come on guys. They might have 4 doors, but they re all Porsches! Get those garage queens out on the track! Eric Berg, MD! PAGE 6

12 Death of Speed Channel By Mike Moody By now, we all know Speed Channel has been sacrificed in favor of Fox Sports 1 channel. If you are like me, you LOVED Speed Channel and after checking out the programming on Fox Sports 1, you have looked for other channels for car racing and generally decent car guy programming. Enter NBC Sports Network and Velocity Channel, owned by Discovery. Velocity is my new favorite channel, not for racing, but a good array of car guy programming. I have my DVR set for my favorites, including Chasing Classic Cars, Wheeler Dealers, Car Crazy and Mecum Car Auctions. There are other programs on rebuilding hot rods and such, but Wayne Carini who Chases Classic Cars is my favorite. I have found Mecum auctions to be much more interesting that Barrett-Jackson who focuses mainly on American antique and muscle cars. Mecum has more European sports cars, including 356 and 911 Porsches at every auction and they don t cut to a commercial when one comes up like Barrett-Jackson. But there is no racing on Velocity that I have found. For racing, you have to visit NBC Sports Network and set the VCR to record Formula 1 races. I am not sure which channel will carry the new Tudor United Sports Car Championship races starting in January. This is the new series created from former American Lemans (ALMS) and Grand-Am series races. My guess is it will not be on Fox Sports 1. I used to watch Indy Car Racing, but with so many oval NASCAR tracks on their circuit, I don t find them very interesting. I watch only the April race at Barber from the Porsche tent, and the Indy 500 on TV to see who gets to drink the milk. I also try to catch the Continental Tire races to see how Jade Buford does, but it isn t real time but delayed a week or two on ESPN. Of course I don t miss the 24 Hours of LeMans and our own Petit LeMans from Road Atlanta. Porsche by Design: Seducing Speed October 12, January 20, 2014 On October 12, 2013, the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh will bring together the largest and most diverse group of Porsche automobiles ever on display in a U.S. art museum. Porsche by Design: Seducing Speed will feature over 22 Porsche automobiles that trace the evolution of the marque s design from the 1930s through the present. The exhibition will be on view through January 20, Some highlights of Porsche by Design include the 1938/39 Type 64 Berlin-Rom racer designed by Porsche founder Dr. Ferdinand Porsche a handcrafted 1949 Gmünd coupe Steve McQueen s iconic Porsche Speedster Janis Joplin s psychedelic Porsche a hybrid race car prototype from 2010 I wanted to make sure you were aware of the exhibition, and I encourage you to spread the word among fellow Porsche enthusiasts. I have brochures of the exhibit, and would be interested in leading a group drive to the exhibit if enough interest. It looks like a great exhibit, and fun trip to Raleigh. 14 Falls Creek Falls Tour Recap By Greg Morken Musik Stadt's September trip was a day trip to Falls Creek Falls under perfect weather. Starting in Lebonon, 14 cars and 26 members wandered through scenic back roads onto the Cumberland Plateau to view several waterfalls within this Tennessee state park. After a group photo opportunity at Cassade Falls, the group had a southern style buffet lunch at the Inn's restaurant. After lunch, we continued on our drive to view Falls Creek Falls waterfall (at 256ft, its the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi). Several of the members hiked down a trail to catch the view from the bottom but the rest of the group continued their drive around the scenic park road to take in other sights like the Cane Creek Gorge area and Piney Creek Falls.!
