Especially since I was recently down-sized and now officially retired.i guess. Dan and Vic say I should just relax and enjoy the freedom. Thing is I can t remember when I had so much freedom, which feels more like boring, so am trying to find another job to fill my available time. If you haven t been to Cars & Coffee lately, you are missing a lot of really nice cars, great car enthusiasts and good conversation. On May 19, I counted about 20 Porsche s from Musik-Stadt plus another 17 showed up from Huntsville, led by HOD president Jim Cambron. It is every Saturday now so come join us. Dan is working on more events for the coming months so let he or I know if you have any suggestions on where to tour and eat. We welcome your ideas! I don t know if you have had to buy tires lately for your chariot, but prices are going up. Even better now that you should select the proper tire for your driving conditions, and get the most mileage out of them. We will have a Bridgestone tire engineer at our July meeting so don t miss out on his presentation on performance tires. 4 Page 4 Tail of the Dragon/Deal s Gap/Fontana Village June 22 24, 2012 Mark your calendars and make your hotel reservations. Dan Martin has planned a trip to Deal s Gap NC by way of the Cherohala Skyway for a week-end visit to Tail of the Dragon, and maybe a Saturday trip to Biltmore or Biltmore Village in Ashville. Mike Moody made this trip with PCA Huntsville 6 years ago and said it was a blast. This has to be on someone s bucket list so make your reservations now with more details to follow. Call Fontana Village at and use code MUSIK STADT for special room rate of $115/night (Friday + Sat night). Dan is working on special dinners for both nights. A few years later I met my wife, Sharon, and we headed north for a job working on the White House staff as a computer programmer.

After a few years of that hectic lifestyle and seeing many unique places around the world, we headed out to New Mexico.

After a few years of that arraignment, we finally decided to move back to Florida where we ve lived for the next 20-some years.

We were hooked. It took 2 years to find the right challenging senior IT position within Tennessee and Page 2 neither of us had ever seen Nashville until the day of that interview.

6 Page 6 Our long journey to Tennessee is similar to the long journey of our current Porsche 944 project. I grew up on southern California beaches and, after joining the Air Force to see the world, found myself traveling east to Florida. A few years later I met my wife, Sharon, and we headed north for a job working on the White House staff as a computer programmer. This job also included 150 days traveling in support of the President and VP setting up their Communication Centers and Press Offices. After a few years of that hectic lifestyle and seeing many unique places around the world, we headed out to New Mexico. Albuquerque was selected as a compromise for my family being in California and my wife s family in the Florida panhandle. After a few years of that arraignment, we finally decided to move back to Florida where we ve lived for the next 20-some years. But in all those years of traveling, we had never visited Tennessee before. It was a random selection of Mayors Mansion B&B in Chattanooga that showed us the beauty that Tennessee can offer. We were hooked. It took 2 years to find the right challenging senior IT position within Tennessee and Page 2 neither of us had ever seen Nashville until the day of that interview. We accepted the position the next day. That was 6 months ago and it was by, far, the best move we ve ever made. So how does this long personal journey to reach Nashville relate to our current Porsche project? Best as we can determine from Carfax and previous owners, our Porsche has traveled 322,000 miles before possibly making her first trip to see the Volunteer State. Her 27 years on the road also started in southern California as we found her in the desert community of Quartz Hill, California. But I m getting ahead of myself. I ve never owned an old car before. Every car purchased over these past 30 years was bought new or almost new. But over a breakfast with my brother-in-law one winter day, he decided that I needed a new hobby to expand my horizons - like restoring an older Porsche. I should have known better with this suggestion coming from a guy who has driven a 917 for a partial season and spent many years cruising in his beautiful early 300hp RSR. CONT D NEXT PAGE

The smart move would have been to buy a low mileage late model Porsche and simply enjoy the drive But this Porsche project was found sitting in the backyard of a house a few miles from that California desert restaurant. We later learned that it had been sitting there for 6 years under that hot California desert sun. We settled on a price of $1 with the owner s sister as the owner s job had transferred him back east and no one had any interest in the car. The rust-free car was then put on a trailer where it made the 2,500 mile journey to Florida where we spent 18 months of replacing or repairing what seemed to be every part possible. The work included a rebuilt engine from EBS Racing, a new A/C compressor and condenser, alternator, sunroof motor and cable system replacement, what seemed to be every piece of rubber was replaced, new paint job, windshield, many of the interior parts, a new clutch, new front/rear struts, and so much more. Clarks-Garage.com, Rennlist, Pelican Parts and my brother-in-laws extensive long distance mentoring helped turned this project into a daily driver. It s been a great pleasure to meet several of you on these recent PCA day trips and meetings. Thanks for allowing this old water cooler within your beautiful cars. This is my 3 rd Porsche since 1977 (924, 911 Targa, & now the 944 project car) but it s the first Porsche to actually get me to join PCA. See you on the road!

Page 9 The Performance Garage is Hosting a Musik-Stadt PCA Tech Session for a Dyno Run: July 14 We will be meeting on Saturday, July 14 at the Cracker Barrel, 2697 Highwood Boulevard Smyrna, TN 37167

Please be there around 7:45 till 8:00 am, as we will depart from there 8:45 to The Performance Garage, meeting with Chris Berkey, owner.

Please keep in mind it will take a while to bring a Porsche in and strap it down, then each car will get 2 to 3 runs.

For example, once the cars is strapped in and the rear driven wheels are secured on the dyno rollers, the cars is started and slowly accelerated in first gear, the second gear, then third gear, then

The Cracker Barrel is just of Exit 67, I24 East. Please be there around 7:45 till 8:00 am, as we will depart from there 8:45 to The Performance Garage, meeting with Chris Berkey, owner. The Performance Garage 531 Huntley Industrial Blvd Smyrna, TN Chris intends to dyno 4-5 of our cars, at a max he can do 14. Please keep in mind it will take a while to bring a Porsche in and strap it down, then each car will get 2 to 3 runs. Basically the car will be strapped down with the driven set of rear wheels, the car is accelerated to optimum torque and speed/ RPM. For example, once the cars is strapped in and the rear driven wheels are secured on the dyno rollers, the cars is started and slowly accelerated in first gear, the second gear, then third gear, then fourth gear (test will be typically in forth gear). Now in forth gear the driver, either you or Chris, will settle at around 2500 RPM, then the go ahead is given to floor it (approx 5-10 seconds). Keep in mind you are already probably around mph (depending on your equipment). At this time then the computer/ dyno will slow down the car, breaking it, nothing you have to do. That brake force is ultimately translated back to HP. Of course several other valuable feedback results in such test, like optimum ignition, air/ fuel ratio to name a few. Now the car is allowed a cool down and we go again. 4 wheel drives can only be tested if front wheels are disconnected Cost: USD per car, including (2-3 runs for average and printout). Optional: Monitor air and fuel ratio, additional USD per car. (The cost is usually USD 85.00) First come, first run you must prepay so mail your check now.
