2 Hello Everyone, A Message From The President I'm Harald Melson the new president of Musik-Stadt. My wife, Denair, and I have been a member of PCA since However, it was not until we moved to Franklin in 2012 we became active in a PCA club. Like so many of you, I am a car person. Having always appreciated German engineering, it wasn't until 2003 when I became a Porsche owner, with a Boxster S. We currently own a 2016 Cayenne Diesel and a Turbo. Trying to fill the shoes of the past two Presidents will be a monumental task. Their energy, knowledge, leadership and passion for Porsche and Musik-Stadt is amazing! We are fortunate to have had the untiring spirit and help of Dan, Mike, Randy, Rick, Ken, Kent, Craig, Erik and others. Fortunately all will continue to serve either on the board, committees or as mentors along with others! Here is the list of the new board and committee chairs: All of these individuals have already been very busy in their new positions. Their goal and the goal of the club : Making Musik- Stadt better. We welcome any input, ideas and suggestions. "It's more than the cars, it's the fellowship." 5 Partners In Performance - News From Porsche Of Nashville First off I would like to give a warm and sincere Happy 2019 to Musik-Stadt PCA! We here at Porsche of Nashville are very much looking forward to broadening our long time relationship with the club this year. I am hoping with this monthly column we can keep the club aware of all the exciting things happening at our dealership and with this wonderful brand we all love so much. A question I get quite a lot is, Does Porsche of Nashville work on older Porsche models? The answer to that question is an emphatic yes! We work on all Porsches, young and old. With that being said it is true that many of our techs have not had much experience working on the older cars. This can result in classic repairs taking longer than we would like due to that work needing to be done by only a couple of technicians. We are making moves to change that. In January we sent technician Josh Orner to California for Porsche Classic training. During the week long class he was trained specifically on service and maintenance operations for six-cylinder, air-cooled models up to and including the 993, as well as four and eight cylinder, water-cooled, tans-axle models to include 924, 944,968, and 928 models. We will be sending other technicians to this training in the future. In March we will be having our bi-annual Service Clinic. This is an opportunity to get a complimentary multi-point inspection on your out- of- Porsche- warranty vehicle. The dates of the clinic will be March 11 th -14 th from 2:00-5:00pm. We will have the usual refreshments available as well as a gift for those who attend. Any attendee who decides to get their car repaired or serviced as a result of the clinic will get 15% off the repair with a max discount of $200. We will be sending out invitations in late January/early February with instructions on how to register. Those of you who wish to attend and have not received an invitation please contact me and we will get you in! The Saturday following the Service Clinic, March 16 th, we will be hosting a tech session at 10:00am. We will be going over some of the new technology in the all-new 2019 Cayenne. This vehicle is really amazing and much of the technology will also be available in the 992 launching later this year. We also plan to have a 996 or 986 on hand to go over some of the things we see on those and answer all of your IMS bearing questions. We will have bagels and doughnuts and of course our coffee machine will be warmed up and ready to go! While this event is primarily for club members we will also extend the invitation to non-club members. We hope this will give the club an opportunity to do a little outreach and maybe gain one or two new members in the process. We are very excited about what this year has in store for our dealership and our brand. I would like to personally thank all of you for your patronage over the years. We will keep striving to provide the truly exceptional experience you deserve! Al Fortunato Service Manager Porsche of Nashville PAGE 5
6 2019 Is Shaping Up To Be A Busy Year! By C. Flamme WOW! Where did January go? Only about 6 more weeks then we ll be out having fun in our favorite marque but as I write this, they are saying it s going to be sunny and almost 70 the first weekend in February! I know I m thinking about dusting the old car off and going for a fun drive somewhere after the breakfast social at Puffy Muffin. Speaking of which starts at 8:00 am when they open their doors. If you missed February s breakfast social, you ll have one more chance on March 2! Join us if you can! This month s Dinner Meeting is going to be on February 12 at the Sportsman s Grille in Brentwood (1640 Westgate Circle, Brentwood, TN 37027, meeting starts at 6:30 pm). Be there to find out if Harald, our intrepid President, has recovered enough from his double knee replacement to attend the meeting. I ll have to miss out because I will be having my right knee replaced on Feb. 4 but should be ready for a fun filled March! Unfortunately, that s about all we have planned for this February but March is shaping up to be chock full of things to do! As you have (or will) read in this issue, Porsche of Nashville (PON) is hosting their Bi-Annual Service Clinic March 11 th -14 th from 2:00-5:00pm each day. On March 16 th they will also be hosting a tech session for Musik Stadt Region members at 10:00am. They will be reviewing the new technology in the all-new 2019 Cayenne. The new Cayenne s technology will be available in the 992 launching later this year. PON plans to have a 996 or 986 on hand to go over issues their Service Department solve and answer all of your IMS bearing questions. Bagels, doughnuts and their coffee machine will be warmed up and ready to go! While this event is primarily for Musik Stadt members an invitation will also be made to non-club members. This will give us an opportunity to conduct some outreach and maybe gain one or two new members! The March Dinner meeting will be held on March 12 at the Sportsman s Grille in Brentwood. Don Wirth and Dan Martin are planning our first drive of the season on March 30 th. The route is tentatively planned though Williamson & Maury counties that ends up at Circa Grill in Thompson Station. Don reports that this is a very scenic drive. They have also roughly charted out the following drives: Drive to Hohenwald restaurant TBD. Drive to Gainesboro via Hartsville, Lafayette & Willette. Lunch at Giovanni s in Gainesboro. Drive to Ashland City via White Bluff & Charlotte. Lunch at Riverview Restaurant in Ashland City. Drive to Manchester via numerous back roads in Rutherford & neighboring counties. Lunch at Willowbrook CC near Manchester. Stay tuned for dates and details. If you have any ideas or want to lead a driving tour event, please let us know. PAGE 6
7 Mike Moody is also looking to organize and lead a tour to Hagey s Catfish Hotel Restaurant & Shiloh National Cemetery. He says it s a nice drive over for the scenery, catfish and history. It's an all-day trip, but worth the drive. Look for more information down the road closer to the fall. There s also been some ramblings about a weekend trip back down to Atlanta for a visit to the Porsche Experience Center. That was a lot of fun. We left Friday for a nice tour through the north Georgia Mountains, staying over night and then a drive down to Atlanta Saturday morning. The Solis Hotel (located right next door to PEC) has been open for a year now! Kim and I stayed down there last year and thought it was a great hotel. It should be a lot better now that they ve had a year to work out any kinks. Does anyone want to look into organizing this weekend event? Let me know and we can start planning a fun filled weekend! Non-Musik Stadt events are also coming up soon! German Cars, Motorcycles n Coffee dates for 2019 have been planned for the following Saturdays: March 23, June 22, Sept 14 and Oct 22. All vehicles are staged in the parking lot in front of the Bavarian Bierhaus Opry Mills Mall. It all starts at 9:00 am and runs until 11:00 am. Brunch will be available in the restaurant s Jagerstube - $12 per person. As always, if you want to show up early and volunteer to help place the vehicles your efforts are appreciated! Let me know if someone wants to organize a parade over to the venue, there s nothing more impressive than a lineup of Porsches arriving at the same time! The Tennessee Baptist Children s Home is located off of Franklin Rd just south of Concord. More information is available at If there are enough people wanting to attend, we can parade over before the event. I m trying to arrange for a Porsche Platz parking area and it s easier to arrange if we all arrive together. They are also looking for volunteers to help out at the event. Contact me if you d like to attend and/or volunteer! Trissl Sports Cars just announced that registration will open for Uber Region Fest V on February 10. The event is scheduled for June 7 8, More information can be found at Trissl Sports Cars ( urf2019/) Also look for an upcoming for a link to a club survey. Since we have grown to more than 500 members the board is interested to know if we are meeting your expectations regarding the type of events you d like to see organized and participate in as a part of Musik Stadt Region. We want to continue providing the types of activities that keep our membership engaged! We d all love to see everyone involved and grow participation in club events. I think that s enough for now! Keep on pushing those pedals! Coming up on April 20 is the KARS4KIDS Cars/ Trucks/Motorcycles Show to benefit the Tennessee Baptist Children s Home. Registration is from 8:00 am to noon. $20 onsite registration fee if you d like to show your car. There will be awards for the Top 50 vehicles. PAGE 7
8 Porsche Pundit - Brand Loyalty By R. Turner One of my favorite things to do on the web is to go into a car company s web site, head straight to their configurator and build something. Sometimes it will be a stripper, just the basic car to see how cheap I can build it. And more times than not, I go all in adding every option to see how far I can take it to the other extreme. I try different colors, different interiors, different wheels and I spare no expense on the performance options. If you are going to build something, you may as well go big. Right? I love me some Porsches! Owned twelve of em (and counting). But you know what? I ve never bought a new one. The Turner master plan says I get to do that at some point in my short life on this revolving globe. Thinking back to the Brand Loyalty series I wrote a couple of months back, you know I ve got to get my boys out of college, propped up and on their own. Could take years. It s funny, I even remind them from time to time (like weekly), that they re holding me back. I am joking here, but just barely. Point is, I love the Porsche configurator. I build cars on it all the time, like maybe 2-3 times per month. OK, maybe 3-4 times per month. But that s all I m admitting here. I build Carrera s (mostly Turbos and GT3s), Boxsters, Caymans (especially Caymans; love em), Cayennes (just in case we end up needing a new one), Macans (because they are awesome), Panameras (have you read my actionadventure novels? They factor somewhat in the story line), and 918 s (cause they are stupid crazy and it s fun to see if you can configure one to $1,000,000 yes with reversed pinky held to mouth, Dr. Evil style). I will build one, giggle and say to my wife, Hey I built a new Porsche, wanna see it? She ll glance over at me, with a sideways look, glasses lowered to her nose, and ask if I went all in this time or not. No I will proudly exclaim that I built an inexpensive Cayenne - for her. Does she want to see it? Then she ll ask if it is like the other dozen I have built for her lately and not getting her sarcasm, I ll say this one is different. (Yeah, it s red.) Sometimes she looks, sometimes she doesn t and she reminds me (for like the thousandth time) that we re not doing anything before the aforementioned boys are out of school, cars paid off, bills paid off, ETC. Oh yeah heard that one before. So then, what the heck, I ll reconfigure the car as a Cayenne Turbo S with every option under the sun. $180K! Yeah, that ll show her! The mouse hovers over the get a quote from your dealer button and as usual, I do not press it. But man, I wish I could. I know that day will come, that perfect moment when I will be able to press that button and talk to the dealer, to build my dream Porsche. I can feel it coming in a three-to-four-year-off kinda way. See I have infinite patience when it comes to waiting for my ultimate car. I ve got to, I only get one shot. And on that exhaust note, see you all next time. RL Turner is the author of The Driver, a series of action adventure novels, available in both print and ebook on Amazon (more info at Having owned a dozen Porsches and driven hundreds of laps on racetracks throughout the southwest, author Turner knows a few things about going fast in a Porsche and then fixing them when he breaks something. 9 Musik-Stadt Annual Awards Banquet By D. Martin Our region celebrated its 2018 award winners at Brentwood Country Club on January 26. It was a great evening with 79 members and guests in attendance enjoying great food and lively Porsche-centric conversation. Outgoing MSK president Dan Martin welcomed all to the banquet and following dinner explained that newly elected president Harald Melson was recuperating from surgery at home. In his absence Josh Swayze, vice-president, was able to recognize our new leadership team of John Shaw (Treasurer), Mike Moody (Secretary), John Harbor (Membership Director), Cherie Beatty (Dealer Liaison), Alex Hollis (Communications Director), Craig Flamme (Major Events Director), Don Wirth (Driving Tours), and Jerry Fink (Safety Director). In addition Kent Kersten has agreed to continue as our webmaster and Ken Maurer will remain as our newsletter editor. Our annual awards to our top members came next. Dan presented our Enthusiast of the Year trophy to Don Wirth. Don was a constant fixture at our monthly meetings and events. He missed only one monthly meeting and one driving tour in Congratulations Don! Our New Member of the Year award recipient was Jackie Hardy. Jackie joined PCA in February and not only was a regular on drives and at meetings but also developed and led a tour through the back roads to Beacon Light in Lyles. It was one of the most enjoyable Saturday tours of the year. The final award of the evening went to Sharon Stewart for Track Enthusiast of the Year. Sharon completed a number of Porsche Driving Experience courses at Barber Motorsports Park as well as High Performance Driver Education events at Barber, Road Atlanta, Roebling Road and New Orleans. She also did a drive in a GT3 RS at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta. WOW! What a year. While three members won great trophies they were not the only ones to go home with a prize. Twenty-one great prizes were given away in a drawing from our 42 primary members present. Half went home with some form of prize! The Grand Prize as usual was a terrific Citizen watch donated by E.J. Sain Jewelers, 4009 Hillsboro Rd. Bruce Fitzpatrick was the lucky winner of this year s watch. Congratulations Bruce! Porsche of Nashville generously donated a $300 Certificate for service which was won by Matt Shaw. Our thanks to PON for the certificate and to Al Fortunato, PON Service Manager, and Chamdler Clay, PON Service Advisor, for attending the banquet. We also received two great prints from Bruce Sweetman (visit his website brucesweetman.smugmug.com), a copy of The History of Rennsport Reunion donated by Wicky Lawrie (Wicky s Porsche shop is Renntag Motorwerks at 319 Homestead Rd, Nashville). Items were also received from Pelican Parts, Griots Garage and members. Thanks to everyone for coming out to the banquet. We had a great group of Porsche owners and fans there with a number of new members in the crowd. I was also pleased to see three Musik-Stadt Charter Members in attendance, Jud Scott, Mike Gillespie and John Hudson who is moving back to Nashville next month. Finally Rick Arnemann presented Dan Martin with a beautiful custom-made shadow box featuring a PCA car badge as thanks for his work as president of MSK. PAGE 9
