3 A Message From The President Good grief it s cold! Looking at my Dark Sky app on my phone I see that the low temperature on Wednesday is expected to be 2 degrees. Yikes! That means two things to me. (1.) Be sure my battery tender is connected, and (2.) the Musik-Stadt Annual Banquet is just around the corner! If you haven t registered for our banquet yet it s time to get busy. There s a convenient link on our webpage musikstadtpca.org that will easily walk you through our banquet info and registration. Our banquet takes place Saturday, January 20th, at the Brentwood Country Club. Cost remains $50 per person. There will be a cash bar available. We hope to announce a speaker for the banquet during the first week of January so stay tuned. Join us to celebrate Musik-Stadt s Enthusiast of the Year on January 20th. Also due to the cold weather we are reviving our winter monthly Breakfast Meetings on January 6 at the Puffy Muffin in Brentwood at 8:00 am. JC Costarakis, AKA Breakfast Boy, will be hosting these cold weather Saturday morning breakfasts January through March. It s a chance to get out of the house and fight off the winter blahs. No reservation necessary. Puffy Muffin is located in the Hills Center at 229 Franklin Rd, Brentwood. While I ve been staying put inside during this cold snap I was thinking about how boring the winter months are if you don t ski or have a condo in deep south Florida, or Cabo San Lucas. Boring. Then I remembered that I m always thinking I should have trekked north to Detroit or Chicago for one of the big auto shows during the winter. When I worked I often arranged my calendar to go to the work in Detroit when the Detroit Auto show was at Cobo Center. This is a great show and this year it runs from January The Chicago Auto Show is also very good. It runs from February at McCormick Place. You can fly into both cities on Southwest Airlines. My first choice would be the Chicago show due to the city itself. It s hard to beat downtown Chicago and its hotels, restaurants and shopping. It s cold but this would be a fun weekend. Road trip anyone? Finally I want to let you know that Musik-Stadt is edging closer to have a real election for it s officers. In August I asked MSK members to volunteer to serve on committees or our board. We had nine members volunteer for service. That s great but we need more. We re making one more request now. A nominating committee will put the names of those interested in board positions on a ballot for on-line voting by our membership. We re hoping this will be completed by end of the first quarter. If you will serve let me know. If you have a specific area of expertise or interest let me know. Come to the banquet and we will attempt to describe the process put forth in our charter. PAGE 3

6 Of Freeze Warnings And Porsche Owners By K. Maurer Hopefully by the time you read this, we are through, or most of the way through, our first truly cold snap of this winter. According to reports I ve seen, it s not expected to be the last, and that prompted me to take a look through my garage to see what may need some winterization, both vehicle wise and garage wise. As what I found were many items I d forgotten about over the years, I thought it may make a good quick tip column for this month. First and foremost of course, make sure the coolant in your Porsche is protected to something below zero. A 50/50 mix usually does the trick around here, offering good protection to temps well below zero and inexpensive testers are available at any auto parts store. Also, if you intend to drive your Porsche in temperatures approaching or below freezing and you still have a set of summer tires mounted, be sure to drive with extra caution. The cold temps mean that summer rubber is less pliable and it s not going to get into the nooks and crannies of the pavement like it does in warmer temps. Don t lean on them too hard in the turns, and try to give yourself a little extra braking distance. Very aggressive rubber may even be made of a compound that can be damaged by temps near freezing - though if you have a set of these, you ve likely already taken proper precautions. Keep an eye on the tire pressure too, as these super cold temps will likely cause a pressure drop. If you store your Porsche in the winter months as opposed to driving it, you may want to consider putting more pressure in the tires than you would for driving (while being careful not to exceed the max pressure listed on the sidewall of course) just to help keep flat-spotting at bay. It needn t be a ton more, but a few more PSI over and above normal driving pressure can help. Also, as Mike Moody reminded us a couple of months back, if your Porsche is going to sit for any length of time, you re going to want to hook it to a battery tender. Something like Deltran s Battery Tender Plus is what you want - these will maintain the health of your battery without damaging it through overcharging. There are also other brands on the market. Finally, you may want to take a look through the interior of your car, and make sure you ve not left anything inside that could be damaged by cold temperatures. After I got my cars ready for the cold, I decided to look around the garage for anything that shouldn t be left to the cold temperatures, and I was amazed at what all I found. Various chemicals, in a variety of containers, all on garage shelves as I d used them over the summer and forgotten them, but that I relocated inside as they should not be allowed to freeze (typically there are warnings on the labels of any such products). I even decided to take some precautions with my exposed water main and water softener, covering both as best I could with old towels to hold in some warmth. Hopefully these tips help - most of them are things we all know but tend to forget about. I know I sure did PAGE 6
