2 A Message From The President November was a great month for Musik-Stadt. Porsche of Nashville once again sponsored our New Member Mixer where we had 12 new members come out to enjoy a great evening. A total of 40 members feasted on a great assortment of sushi and other delicious items from Wild Ginger. PON really knows how to throw a great party! Thanks to General Manager Jeff Escue and his terrific staff for hosting and making us all feel so welcome. Our November driving event was organized and led by Joe Questel. This was an overnight weekend event with 14 cars making the trek into Kentucky to experience the Bourbon Trail. I believe there are some great photos from the tour appearing further in this issue. I hear everyone had a great time even though the weather wasn t nearly as agreeable as the bourbon. So we arrive at December. We have one more Musik-Stadt drive on December 9th and one more monthly meeting (Logan s, Cool Springs, 12/12). Seems like we re winding down the year fairly quietly but actually we re not! The board is in the midst of pulling together our annual Awards Banquet for Be sure and save the date of January 20 to attend the banquet which will once again be held at the Brentwood Country Club. We will begin registration soon via clubregistration.net so keep on the lookout for an enews announcement. Appalachian mountain roads in the first half of We re going to get busy very quickly. In addition to driving tours J.C. is also planning a Cigar & Bourbon tasting soon. Seems as though the Bourbon Trail tour really made a big impression on J.C. The Porsche Parade returns to our neck of the woods in We can drive to this Parade in a day! Yeah!! Parade will be held July 8-14 in southwest Missouri at the Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, Missouri. This is a great resort (formerly a Marriott property) with tons of great mountain roads and fantastic scenery. The property is on the Lake of the Ozarks, west of St. Louis and has a marina, golf course and spa. Visit their website tan-tar-a.com for a look at their facilities. I hope Musik-Stadt can be strongly represented! To close let me say thanks to all of you who helped me lead our region this year. It has truly been a great learning experience as well as a lot of fun. Thanks especially to Mike Moody for his assistance and guidance. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! 5 Oil Analysis: A Window Into Your Engine By: K. Maurer If you are anything like me, you like to try to keep as close an eye on the inner workings of your Porsche s engine as possible. For me, I experience this even more as my Cayman has Porsche s M97 flat six - an enjoyable engine to be sure, but one with some known shortcomings as well. And, in fairness, what engine doesn t have at least a few shortcomings or design challenges? In light of that, I recently decided to augment my maintenance strategy to include an engine oil analysis. If you ve never had such an analysis done before, as I had not, I can tell you it couldn t be much easier. There are a few options out there for labs that do this work, and a quick internet search should reveal to you the most popular options (I used Blackstone for mine, but I ve heard of other labs that do fine work as well). I simply went online and ordered a kit (free to order with this particular lab; you pay when you send in your sample). The kit included everything that was needed; a small clear plastic sample bottle, some absorbent material to wrap around the sample bottle, and a larger plastic shipping container complete with a pre-paid USPS shipping label. There are a few tips if you ve never done this before. First, if you can convince a friend or family member to crawl under your Porsche with you, it is nice to have one person there to remove the oil drain plug while you have the sample container in hand, ready to catch some of the oil. The instructions recommend that you don t take a sample in the first few seconds after the drain plug is removed; this is to ensure that any crude that may be in the immediate area of the drain plug, but not actually in the used oil don t end up contaminating your sample. The good news is with a Porsche that holds around 8 liters of oil, you ve got plenty of time to get a sample during the middle of the oil drain. I d also recommend you don t remove the lid to the sample container until you are in place where you want to be under the car. I thought I was, and removed the lid, and even though I was careful, when I went to move those last few inches toward the oil pan, I managed to whack the container against the bottom of the car, knocking a bit of dirt into it. It wasn t anything a paper towel couldn t remove, but it was one more hassle I could have easily avoided if I d thought ahead. Finally, have a few shop towels ready, as you ll need them to wipe off the sample container after you ve collected your sample (it holds just a few ounces). Once you ve got your sample, it s time to send it off to the lab. I read through the FAQs on the webpage of the lab that I picked, and noted a caution that sometimes the USPS may not want to allow you to ship the container, as they are concerned it is a hazardous material. The web site provided a letter for download which explains that is it not, and references the appropriate regulation. If you want to avoid any potential hassle, you can always ship via UPS, which is what I chose to do this time and I had no issues. Once the lab receives your sample, they run various tests on it to see what exactly is in it. When done, the lab I selected sent me a very interesting file by , showing a breakdown of the various metals, etc. in the oil, and what would be considered normal for my engine and the mileage on the oil. In addition, they provide a nice paragraph which gives the same information in easy to understand language. For me, the sample came back as showing normal wear, no oil or fuel contamination, and a viscosity in keeping with what it was when I first put the oil in the engine. For me, the roughly $30 price tag was fairly small for the extra peace of mind. Along with taking a good look inside the oil filter, and at the magnetic drain plug if you have one, an oil analysis may be an additional line of defense in identifying potentially abnormal engine conditions before they become terminal.
