2 FROM THE PRESIDENT S GARAGE Your Newsletter Editor has been very busy this late summer and early fall so this Newsletter will be more of a photo sharing issue than a content loaded item. Many car shows, Fillmore Glen flea market and show, and my almost 60 year old kitchen is getting a total makeover. After Hershey I sure hope that busy turns into put yer feet up! All for now, Jim September 13, 2016 Meeting was called to order by President Jim Morris at 7PM. Sixteen members were present. Secretary s report was read from the May meeting. Motion to approve by Don, second by Bruce. Motion carries. Treasurer was not at meeting so there was no report. Jim reported that the auction brought in $ Communications: MAFCA regarding upcoming elections. MAFFI requesting a donation, thank you from Adam and Allison regarding their use of Sullivan Trail website and a donation request from Haggerty Insurance. Discussion regarding donations will be held at the Oct meeting. Bill has patches for the 2016 International Model A Day available. They are $3.00 each. Ginny reported that there will be a cruise in at the Lindley Roadhouse on Oct 1. Free lunch to those driving classic/antique cars. See website calendar of events for more information. The MARC tour will be held Sept 19 th thru 22 nd. We will discuss IMAFD tour at the Oct meeting. Elections will be held soon and anyone wishing to run for office should let the President/Vice President know what position they are interested in. We could use some volunteers to help with information/pictures for the website. Bev had information about the Yellow Dot program. Anyone wishing the brochure can pick them up at the next meeting. Doug told about the show he attended in Williamsport. Approximately 600 cars. Bruce talked about the Model T tour with 293 cars. Also, the Snapper Tour held in Ithaca with about 35 cars. Donations would be appreciated for the use of the site at Fillmore. Jim has reserved the spot for Jim and Monty talked about the fascinating tour they took to Rose Hill Mansion and the celebration of the Mansion s 1916 Model T. Don said the recent show at Appleridge was very nice. Monty won $21.00 in the 50/50 raffle. Bev provided refreshments and Taylor volunteered to provide refreshments for the Oct meeting. 4 The Sullivan Trail A s News Did (or do) you know.. some basic history of gas/filling stations? Here s some information to fill your info tank part way up. The increase in automobile ownership after Henry Ford started to sell automobiles that the middle class could afford resulted in an increased demand for filling stations. The world's first purpose built gas station was constructed in St. Louis, Missouri in 1905 at 420 S. Theresa Avenue. The second gas station was constructed in 1907 by Standard Oil of California (now Chevron) in Seattle, Washington at what is now Pier 32. Reighard's Gas Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania claims that it dates from 1909 and is the oldest existing gas station in the United States. Early on, they were known to motorists as "filling stations". The first "drive--in" filling station, Gulf Refining Company, opened to the motoring public in Pittsburgh on December 1, 1913 at Baum Blvd & St Clair's Street (Walter's Automotive Shop was located here on the 100th anniversary). Prior to this, automobile drivers pulled into almost any general or hardware store, or even blacksmith shops in order to fill up their tanks. On its first day, the station sold 30 gallons of gasoline at 27 cents per gallon. This was also the first architect-designed station and the first to distribute free road maps. GOOD GULF GASOLINE (read carefully and you ll see it!) Unlike earlier simple curbside gasoline filling stations, an architect purposefully designed the pagoda-style brick facility offered free air, water, crankcase service, and tire and tube installation.
