2 A Message From The President Couldn t make it to the huge Sports Car Together Day at Porsche of Nashville on June 9? You missed a great party! We all had a great time celebrating Porsche, visiting with old friends and making new ones. Musik-Stadt had seven new members join PCA within four days of the event who came by our club tent. Thanks once again to Porsche of Nashville for their great hospitality. The past month has seen heat and rain in huge amounts. It makes me pause and think about those of us with convertible tops. Those torrential downpours can quickly remind one of neglected maintenance. I m a convertible guy. I love em. But I have had major problems due to soft-tops over the past 3-4 years. Here s how you can avoid some of the problems I ve experienced. First of all check your drains. Leaves and other debris can easily and quickly clog your drains. This can mean much more than damp carpet. Late model cars install a lot of electronic control modules in the floors. They are very susceptible to drowning and corrosion. It s quite easy to inspect and clean your drains. I refer you to the Porsche workshop manual I use youtube.com. There are a number of video clips devoted to this process and the damage clogged drains can cause. I have personally had two major issues with my Audi and a Boxster I owned. Trust me. The repairs were expensive. Thank goodness the Porsche was a warranty job but it had to have major electronic module as well as power amplifier replacement. Both had to have seats and carpet removed to assure total drying. Both spent weeks in the shop drying out and waiting on parts from Germany. CHECK YOUR DRAINS! Another area to focus on is of course your top itself and its seals. Tops need to be cleaned and sealed. There are a number of products available for this job. The most highly recommended is the RAGGTOPP Convertible Top Care Kit. It has a cleaner and protector spray. RAGGTOPP also sells a great brush for your top. I apply this to our 12 year old Audi top annually. It s great stuff but let me warn you to use painters tape to adhere newspaper over the adjacent glass and bodywork. The protectant is extremely difficult to remove from unintended surface overspray. You also will want to use a rubber cleaner and conditioner on your seals. Our Audi developed a leak at the top right corner where the convertible roof bow meets the windshield top. It only took me 30 minutes to clean and condition the entire area. That was two years ago and I haven t had a leak since. Now if you can t repair your top or if it simply needs professional help I suggest you visit AutoStyle, 1651 Mallory Ln. They are a block away from Porsche of Nashville at the intersection of Mallory Ln and Commerce Way. They can handle anything from small repairs to top replacement. As you might guess convertible top replacement is expensive. Do your maintenance and save a bundle of cash! PAGE 2

6 The Asterisk This year, Toyota became only the second Japanese manufacturer to win overall at Le Mans - in history. Think about that for a moment; Toyota, despite a large budget, despite some very fast prototype race cars over the years, despite many attempts, has only managed a single win. That speaks volumes to how difficult it is to win at Le Mans, and it provides even greater context if one thinks of Porsche s Le Mans history in the same light. Truly competition does improve the breed. Yet, I sort of feel for Toyota. I can t help but wonder if this years win, even given the technological marvel their car is, and regardless of how fast and dominant it was, won t come with an asterisk behind it something along the lines of only manufacturer entry in LMP1. Indeed, with Porsche and Audi now absent the LMP1 grid, the real headline would likely have been if Toyota hadn t won. It must put an auto maker in a difficult position; wanting badly to win yet understanding that the only real news to be made would be if they did not. In contrast, the other Japanese manufacturer to win overall at Le Mans was Mazda, in This victory came against the likes of factory efforts from Peugeot, Jaguar, Mercedes and a multitude of privateers with 962s (which it must be said, had seen their better competition days by then). Still, this win was truly and underdog effort, and while it did require the breakdown of the Peugeots and Mercedes which were both blindingly quick, that nevertheless is part of Le Mans. And this brings us back to Porsche. With overall wins approaching 20 now, Porsche is one of the most decorated marques at Le Mans. And while the days of buying a sports car off the showroom floor and taking it to your local racetrack and being competitive in semiprofessional racing are gone, much of the technology that is sussed out in racing does, in some fashion, find it s way to road cars. Honestly it has to. I can t think of any company that could afford to spend the insane amounts of money a modern FIA LMP1 hybrid entry demands if it did not. And so it will be with Toyota, I would imagine. Already some of the technology of the LMP1 effort is, no doubt, finding it s way, in small doses, into the Lexus line. As we continue to hybridize and electrify our transportation, I can only see this continuing. That is, if other manufacturers see it as beneficial to compete. This, is the true question, and at the moment, the answer appears to be no. Thus, new competition rules are imminent. Therein lies the rub. The real asterisk does not belong to Toyota, but to the sanctioning bodies who, perhaps inadvertently, draft rules which essentially freeze participation to the manufacturers who were sitting at the table on day one. The technology now builds on itself in such a way that any new manufacturer would be all but doomed to spending millions of dollars only to be relegated to also ran status. It s just too hard and too expensive to catch up. We then are left with something of a game of musical chairs. In the latest round, Toyota was the last one standing when the music stopped; Audi and Porsche having achieved their goals and leaving the sport first. And so a new rule set is being drafted, to once again lower costs and attract new manufacturers. If you are a sports car and prototype racing fan, enjoy it while it s here. If history is a guide it will be good, but it won t last. The only real question is who will be left standing when this rule set has reached its nadir? PAGE 6
