2 A Message From The President Time has really flown by in Didn't know they went faster as you and your Porsche aged. Porsche's are like fine wine, they improve with age even though you keep wanting to try the newer ones on the market. I hope yours is/are doing well and prepared for the winter. It is not good to put them up entirely for the winter, so enjoy them daily if yours is a daily driver or on sunny days if not. Consider a good trickle charger if it will not be driven much, and check those tire pressures monthly. Our 2014 Awards (and Fun) Banquet is coming up on Jan 18 at Brentwood Country Club. This will be our 3d year at BCC and they really do an excellent service of food, service and of course beverage. Please send Vic a check today before you forget. The ad is in this newsletter. 6 Member Spotlight: John Hudson Photos and Article By: John Hudson When is the moment you decide that Porsche is the marque you aspire to own someday? Mine was in 1964 when I was a senior at the University of Georgia. One of my Sigma Nu fraternity brothers got a new 64 Irish green Porsche 356 for graduation. I knew I wanted to have a car like that someday when I could afford one. Like most young men of that era, I reported to the army soon after graduation. It would be many years before I could buy my first Porsche. In 69, I was finally in a financial position to buy my fist Porsche. Found a new T at the local dealer and we worked out a deal to trade my MGB with payments of $120 per month for three years! That s the good news, but the bad news was that my wife at the time thought that 120 per month was just too much to pay for a sports car. To preserve peace, I reluctantly passed on the deal. I might add that I never let that happen again! In 1976 I finally joined PCA and began to meet some of the nicest people that shared my appreciation for the well engineered Porsche. In that same year, I took a job in Nashville and bought my first brand new Porsche-an India Red 911S coupe. Sold the car in 79 to a friend for $2000 more than I paid for it with 50,000 miles on the car. Boy, those days are gone forever! I replaced the coupe with a 73 Sepia T coupe that I kept until In 85, Jim Watson built an RS spec engine with Weber carburetors for me. Besides being quick, it won numerous trophies at PCA concours for several years until it was totaled while waiting for a traffic light to change on West End. Not a very dramatic end for a wonderful fun car. I kept the remains until 2001 with plans to rebuild it, but finally sold it to make room for a 356. One essential thing that Nashville lacked was a PCA region. So in 1981, Chuck Elder and I decided we would organize one. With the help of several like minded people, Musik Stadt Region was charted in I had the honor to serve as our first president and chaired our first Grand Old Weekend. My first 911 was a Irish green 70 E hydropneumatic suspension. For those not familiar with long hood 911 s, cars with that suspension system did not have sway bars! A 911 without sway bars and skinny tires will introduce you to something called OVERSTEER. Coming out of a turn backwards is what is called a teachable moment of which I had a few! PAGE 6

7 In 1987 I bought my second brand new 911-a Guards Red coupe that I still drive regularly with 258,000 miles on the clock. I ve made two trips to California in the car and am so confident in its reliability, I d leave tomorrow for another trip to the coast. Over the years, the engine has been up graded to 3.4 liters, a performance chip added, an early exhaust system with a sport muffler, it was lowered and corner balanced, has Koni adjustable shocks, Fuchs 7 and 8 wheels, and an oil filter and oil change every Miles. With the G-50 gearbox, the car is a great drive and my all time favorite! There is nothing like the power and sound of the air cooled six at 6000 RPM s! My last two Porsche purchases were a brand new 2001 Guards Red coupe with Tip and sunroof deleted and a Signal Red SC coupe. As you ve guessed, I like red cars! The 996 is my daily driver and now has 191,000 miles on the car and I drove it on an 11,000 miles trip around the USA in 04. The 356 is a wonderful car to own and drive and mine placed either first or second in every concours event in which it was entered and won the People s Choice Award twice. That s quite an accomplishment for a coupe as Speedsters or Cabs seem to always win. After owning the 356 for ten years, I decided to sell it this past summer and it now lives in Denmark with an avid Porsche owner who also appreciates it quality. leadership. I m looking forward to many more years of fun with my Porsches( have driven over 700,000 in Porsches to date) and Porsche friends. Being a PCA and 356 Registry member has given me the opportunity to meet and become friends with so many interesting and fun people from all sorts of diverse backgrounds. During my 37 years as a PCA member I ve had so many great experiences. I ve attended five Parades, three of the four Rennsport Reunions, had dinner with Peter Shutz former CEO of Porsche, numerous multiregional events, visited the factory in Zuffenhausen, and driven a Porsche 163 MPH on the autobahn, etc. It was great to return to Nashville in 2008 and find Musik Stadt Region with interested members who participate in activities regularly and good Editor s Note: Many thanks to John for the great article and pics! 8 Porsches Are His Life By: David Melson Jim Watson of Lewisburg -- a revered Porsche mechanic and retired race driver -- will be on hand at Calsonic Arena with his newest purchase, a red 1963 Porsche 1600 Super. He'll be glad to chat. But to Porsche enthusiasts -- and historic racing competitors -- he's a household word. Several years of attending races at Sebring -- and owning a series of Porsches -- led the former Shelbyville resident to take up racing in "I'd been going to Sebring every year and decided I wanted to race," Watson said. "I traded a coupe for a Speedster." The Sebring, Fla., track is one of the world's most famous road courses. "I won a race over George Barber (of the famed Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama). My car had 60 horsepower and his had 103. I just outdrove him. I'd been driving for years and he'd been driving six months." The wins were only beginnings. Climb to the top Watson, left, accepts his trophy for winning at Courtland, Ala., in 1963 from world-famous driver Stirling Moss. And he definitely has some stories to tell. Watson may be one of south Middle Tennessee's best kept secrets. He's won major races, sold Porsches and met the biggest names in sports car racing. Today, he repairs Porsches at Watson's Porsche Service in Lewisburg. The building bears only a small "Porsche mechanic" sign in the window, and Watson candidly admits most of his hometown's residents don't know what he works on. SOURCE: SHELBYVILLE TIMES-GAZETTE "The following week I went to Chimney Rock, N.C., for a hill climb. I'd never seen or been to one. An instructor pointed out a driver who was the Pennsylvania hill climb champ and no one could beat him. I decided that was a mark to shoot for. So I beat him Saturday and Sunday." Watson broke the course record later that year. That season of success ended with 10 firsts in 12 races and the Sports Car Club of America F Production class divisional championship. A broken valve spring kept him from a win at Daytona. The young man from the hills of south Middle Tennessee developed his interest in foreign sports cars early -- while living in Shelbyville in the mid-1950s. PAGE 8

9 Shelbyville roots "I've always been a car guy," Watson said. "Several people from Shelbyville including James Pack, Alvin Palmer and I were into sports cars. We went to Sebring for the races in I liked the Porsches and found a 1954 Cabriolet a year later." And, for Watson, a lifetime interest was born. "There were no Porsche mechanics in this area so I worked on it myself. Mr. (Bill) Mittwede's nephew went to Germany and brought back a Porsche 356C for him." Mechanic is born Many older Shelbyville residents fondly remember the late grocery store owner and his sports car. "I worked on it, word got around and I became a Porsche mechanic," Watson said. He has fond memories of taking his family -- his wife and two small children -- from Shelbyville to San Diego and back in 1958 in the '54 Cabriolet. Watson co-owned a Chapel Hill department store with a family member before opening a Porsche dealership in then-booming Huntsville, Ala., in the early 1960s. Many space industry workers were among his customers. But racing took equal importance at that point. Meeting the stars Watson's racing career allowed him to rub shoulders with some of racing's greats. That 1962 season was followed by a win in the 1963 Confederate Grand Prix at Courtland, Ala., where he was presented his trophy by racing great Stirling Moss. He took a Porsche 550A Spyder to the runner-up spot in Southeast Division competition the season. At that point Watson focused his energies largely on his dealership. But he kept one foot in racing, taking firsts at Courtland and Daytona in 1964's G. Production class in a 1300 Porsche, and winning first in class in that division at Daytona in 1965 and Watson ran vintage races from 1988 until retiring from competition at age 75 in And he went out on top, taking first in his class and third overall in his final race. Remembering "In 1965 I fueled Briggs Cunningham's car at Sebring. He asked for us specifically to fuel his car. He was a gentleman." One career highlight was giving some early training to driver Mike Brockman, known for appearing in several movies with fellow racer and actor Paul Newman. "He asked for a job at my Porsche dealership," Watson said. "He said, 'I'm not interested in money. The only thing I'm interested in is learning to drive." Watson took Brockman to the Courtland track. The lesson didn't last long. "I told him to take off and if there were any problems I'd kick him in the shin. He started out and 14 laps later it might as well have been me driving." Watson and Brockman later raced a Porsche 911 in a three-hour race at Daytona. Brockman raced on and off from , co-driving with Newman many times and NASCAR's Kyle Petty twice, among others. One eye And here's the amazing part: Watson only has one eye. "Well, I've only got one eye and everybody's afraid to pass me," Watson said. Watson sold the Porsche dealership in 1967 and opened the repair shop in Lewisburg -- within sight of his boyhood home -- and, at 83, still works as a driving instructor at Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, Ala. And he continues to enjoy every lap of the track and each roar of a Porsche engine. Life's interest "I've met so many good people. I've really been fortunate to enjoy Porsches," Watson said. "I've devoted my life to Porsches." Watson's appearance at Saturday's meet was arranged by organizer Jerry Clanton of Shelbyville, a longtime muscle car enthusiast who now owns a Porsche as well. 10 Porsche Years By Randy Leffingwell Review By: Ken Maurer The author weaves the story of Porsche the company (and family relationships, then the later non-family forces that ran the company) together with the spirit and substance of the 911. Included are, of course, the compelling stories of the 911 and how it was brought back from the brink by Peter Schutz and Helmuth Bott, but also told are other stories of which I was unaware. Although the book is focused on the 911, Randy Leffingwell does not ignore other models along the way, which helps to paint a far more complete picture both of Porsche the company, and the meaning the 911 caries within Porsche. Topping it all off is a separate section devoted just to the rich racing history of the 911. I think it s safe to say that both newcomers to the marque and those that have owned Porsches for years will find something new and compelling in this book. Looking for a gift for that Porsche enthusiast in the family? Or maybe you re looking for a gift for yourself after a long day of holiday shopping? Either way, Porsche Years by Randy Leffingwell is worth considering. In Porsche Years, the story of the 911 is told in great detail and in the context of both internal and external forces within Porsche at each period in time of the 911 s development. The book combines a robust discussion of the 911 itself from both a technical and design standpoint, and how the vehicle came to define and embody the company along the way. Covered from original concept to the current generation 991, the book is a complete and thorough review of the 911 in all it s guises over the years. Included are a variety of pictures that I have not personally seen collected in any one book. However, this is not simply a coffee table book. While it is not a coffee table book in the strict sense of the word, it nonetheless contains many interesting and intriguing photos along various stages of the 911 s life. After reading, I still found myself flipping back through the book over and over again, simply to take a second (and third) look at the photos. So weather you re still looking for that perfect gift, or if you re just looking for a book that collects and tells the complete story of the 911 in one place, in both words and pictures, this just may be the book for you. 11 Porsche Maintenance By: Jim Cambron Are you packing a spare? Do you really want you and or your family to be subject to the weather, traffic, and whelms of the drive-by rednecks on a remote country road? If you are driving a 2005 or newer 911, Panamera, Boxster or Cayman, you don t have a spare. The absence of a spare is due to a decision made by the German TUV (Technischer Überwachungs-Verein, English: Technical Inspection Association) which is four German organizations that work to validate the safety of products of all kinds to protect humans and the environment against hazards). This decision was made to reduce the weight of German cars (Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, etc.) which should also improve fuel economy with the rationale that we don t get as many flat tires today as we used to, and there is a bottle of goop and an air compressor to reinflate the flat tire and limp to the nearest dealer unless the hole exceeds 1/8 or is on the sidewall. However, as you probably know, flats still happen, ask me, or Bill Trevey, or most anyone else in our club who have had one lately. But there is a relatively inexpensive solution; procure and fit the spare tire kit from an early 986 Boxster ( model years) or (996) to your vehicle. With the addition of the appropriate spacers and/or lug bolts (if needed) these spares will bolt right up to your hub and you are on your way. Here s what I did for my Porsches (with the exception of the worthless center-lock hub on the 2010 GT3 RS). I bought a spare tire kit from Oklahoma Foreign (some have found them at LA Dismantlers) which includes the spare tire, aluminum jack and jack handle (lug bolt on one end), and the spare tire cover. You don t need the tool kit which also comes with this spare tire kit (cheap dual-tip screw-driver, etc.). Then add to this kit a pair of 55 gallon plastic trash bags, maybe a set of cotton gloves, and an 18 breaker bar and 19mm socket. All these items fit into the spare tire cover. If you procure these from the dealer, it is about $1,250 retail, but from one of these used parts dealers, I paid about $250 per kit. I had to have some spacers and longer bolts to fit the spare tire/wheel over the enlarged PCCB brakes and 19 hubs on my 07 Boxster S, but it fits perfectly on the 18 hubs/brakes of the GT3 RS, the 93 Turbo S 18 hubs/big Red brakes, and the 12 Cayman R. But, come to think of it, I need to check-out the new 6 piston calipers on the Cayman R now that it has the ITC package, under the worse conditions, I ll get another set of 5mm spacers (if you don t have wheel studs, then you would need 10mm longer wheel studs also). We tried these spares on several 18 and Boxsters/ Caymans and on 996 and s at last year s Tech Session and it fit all of them without spacers and using OEM wheel studs. The idea is when you have a flat, you remove the flat and place it into the doubled 55 gallon trash bags and then either into the rear seat of your 911, or into the hatch-back of your Cayman (and add a bungee cord to hold the hatch down while transporting it home or to the nearest tire store or dealer), or into the front seat of your Boxster, then if you have your lovely spouse with you, there is a decision to make: either she rides in her passenger seat and you hide the flat tire in the woods until you can deposit her somewhere and return for the flat, or you can deposit her in the woods while you take the spare in the passenger seat to the tire store and return for your spouse, depending on your and her preference, etc. PAGE 11

12 Our club s personnel with flats experience is that if you use the goop and air pump, 50% of the time the goop won t work (either the goop has lost its pressure, the hole is larger than 1/8,etc.) and be advised that when you use the goop, if you have a late-model car with tire pressure sensors, the goop destroys them, and the replacement price is more than you would have paid for the spare tire kit. 2 nd, if you call Porsche road-side-assistance, it takes them about two hours to get a truck there, then it took them another two hours to load Bill Trevey s Porsche and take it to a tire repair place, and at least 50% of the time, the tire can t be patched (Porsche will not patch any flat), then you have to wait until Monday to order a new tire, and it s a day or two later to get it delivered, etc. Get yourself a spare. I check my tire air pressure every 6 weeks, I just can t bring myself to check them monthly. And, every time there is a major weather temperature change, when I check the tires they are 6-8 lbs below the set pressure. By the way, get an accurate professional Long Acre tire gage. You spent nearly or more than $100,000 on a car, don t use a $10 tire gage. Google Long Acre and get their gage. If you are interested in fitting the 986 or 996 Spare Tire kit to your car, make sure it will fit in the front luggage compartment. My experience is that it will fit in all 987s and 997s with the only difficulty being with the C4S or turbo (also allwheel drive) with navigation. The spare will fit in the 997 all-wheel drive cars, but it is a VERY tight squeeze and may require removal of some of the trunk lining and the tool kit. Delta Pampers Elite Fliers with Porsche Rides to the Gate. Will Delta surprise you with a Porsche for your trip between gates on your next connecting flight? The airline just might if you're a "Diamond" level frequent-flier in the airline's loyalty program. And, now, the carrier is expanding the program it first began in 2011 to more of its key airports. Delta already surprises some of its most elite customers connecting in Atlanta with gate transfers via Porsche. Now Delta will expand that perk to three more airports: Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul and New York JFK. Delta says its program began in 2011 as a trial at its biggest hub in Atlanta. As part of the trial, Delta offered Porsche service to help "select high value customers" move between gates. "Diamond" level frequent-fliers "selected" for the service are greeted at the aircraft boarding door by a Delta Elite Services representative as they exit the plane. The representative then escorts the lucky passengers and their bags to a waiting luxury vehicle that whisks them to their connecting gates. So, who is eligible for the premium perk? Delta's "Diamond" level frequent-fliers are those who fly 125,000 miles or more in a calendar year. Beyond that, Delta says "each customer is selected for transfer based on a number of factors including flight operation, connection timing and member status." On average, the program currently is used on "more than 75" passengers per day in Atlanta. As Delta expands the service to the additional airports, it says passengers' luxury car transfers will be in Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid vehicles. "Delta is continuing to create new ways to recognize and enhance the travel experience for our most valuable customers," Mike Henny, Delta's director of Customer Experience, says in a statement. "By partnering with Porsche to offer unsuspecting pick-ups in an even more unexpected vehicle, we've found a unique opportunity to surprise and delight customers while assisting customers between connecting flights." 14 Drive To David Crockett State Park By: Kent Kersten On Saturday, 9-Nov-13, seven cars from Musik-Stadt drove to David Crockett State Park near Lawrenceburg, led by Mike Moody. Mike actually brought his cobalt blue 911 for a change instead of his yellow Cayman, but our confusion was short-lived and we had a pleasant drive to the park. The weather stayed cloudy but warmed up nicely during the day. was good. There was a large public swimming pool on the grounds which I m certain is very popular in the summer. They also had a small (35 acres) lake and 7 nice-looking cabins. The park also has several short hiking trails, which I did not get to try. With the fall colors coming out and the pleasant weather it was a nice drive. I will be going back to try out the cabins this winter. We met up with about 14 cars coming north from the Heart Of Dixie (HOD) region. We all met at the park s museum and had a nice tour of the various artifacts from Davy Crockett. Mr. Crockett lived near Lawrenceburg for about 4 years if I remember correctly. The park itself was very nice and seemed much newer than other state parks. The restaurant was large and the buffet lunch PAGE 14

15 Twas the Night Before Christmas. Porsche Style! Twas the night before Christmas, where all through the shop Not an engine was leaking, not even a drop. The tires were filled to their max PSI, In hopes that dreaded flat spots won t appear where they lie. The drivers were warm, all snug on the couch, Playing driving games in earnest so their skills would not slouch. With batteries slowly charging from electricity on tap, The Porsches were prepared for their long winter s nap. When from beyond the garage there arose such a roar, I sprang from my PS3 to the polished concrete floor. A click of a button and the garage doors did raise, I looked out into the dark my mind in a haze. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the luster of mid-day to the objects below. When what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a Porsche Turbo for a gift, is this a joke? I did fear! With a tap of the pedal the exhaust note sounds, I knew in a moment a flat six had been found. More rapid than a cheater in a Nissan GT- R, With a new Porsche Turbo I know I ll go far. Now Doctor! Now Hoffman! now, Carlson and Butzi! On, Elford! On, Patrick! on, David and Hurley! To the start of the race! we re off to the Ring! Through the corners and chicanes this Turbo we ll fling. If we meet with an obstacle, forced air is induced, Nothing feels quite the same as that twin turbo boost. Around and around the ring we did go, By holding the line we were anything but slow. Lap after lap the tarmac flew past, We knew from the start we d never be last. My foot on the gas, I m ready to shift, If you find the apex there s no need to lift. As we round the last corner the checkered flag in site, This unfair race wasn t even a fight. The marshals guide us toward victory lane, Where once again Podium is Porsche s to gain.
