1 Orientation and Conferencing Plan Stage 1 Orientation Ensure that you have read about using the plan in the Program Guide. Book summary Read the following summary to the student. Everyone plays with the remote-control car except the owner but guess who has to fix it when things go wrong? Introduction Foster interest and activate the student s background knowledge. Be concise focus on motivating and involving the student. Encourage prediction by using the text and illustrations on the cover of the book. Discuss new vocabulary and remind the student to use the glossary (when applicable). Also remind the student to ask him/ herself questions before, during and after the reading. Look through the book together and make sure that the student understands what a remote control is and what mag wheels are. Discuss how the student would feel if their property were used and broken by other people before the student had used it and how they feel when they have fixed something. Conferencing Check how well the student reads When you are conferencing, the student reads all or part of the book to you. Then: praise, pause, and prompt appropriately; check for accuracy (by counting mistakes) and fluency; check for understanding by using one or more of the following methods: asking the comprehension questions provided and any others that seem necessary; asking the student to retell the story in their own words; asking questions about and discussing aspcts of the story, such as the theme, plot, main ideas, sequence and characters; encouraging the student to confirm the predictions they made during the orientation. Decide what the student does next Next recommend that the student: practices some more on the same book, with or without the audio; completes one of the activities provided that is related to the book; practices with another book from the same level; or is assessed for promotion to the next level. Comprehension questions 1. What kind of car did Dad buy? 2. Who played with the car before the owner had a turn? 3. when the owner played with the car? 4. Where might they have been playing with the car? 5. What was wrong when the car didn t go? Answers to the Comprehension questions 1. He bought a remote-control car with mag wheels. 2. Accept any of the following: Dad, little sister, friend, and big brother. 3. It didn t go. 4. Answers will vary. 5. The batteries were flat. Supporting English Language Learners The following are suggestions for optional lessons to take with your English language learners. See the overview chart in the Program Guide for a summary of the text features of this book. Purpose Writing simple instructions explaining how to carry out a task Introduce the concept and practice Understanding and using written instructions provides the student with essential skills for independent classroom work. When the student is familiar with the book, show them some examples of simple instructions, for example, how to fly a kite or play Snakes and Ladders. Discuss how diagrams are used to illustrate an instructional text. Together, write a list of instructions about how to operate the car in the book. Encourage the student to think about things not discussed in the text, such as how to make the car turn, how to check the battery, and the best places to use the car. Provide a template for the student to record the instructions, and encourage them to use both words and pictures.
