Ancon manufacures a range of componens ha can be used o creae a variey of assemblies, from simple ie bars o complex bracing sysems involving several bars joined a one poin. 4 Tension and Compression Sysems Ancon 500 Tension Sysem The Ancon 500 Tension Sysem combines aesheic appearance wih high performance. I is available in various sizes from 8mm o 42mm in boh carbon seel and sainless seel. All componens of he sysem can be supplied in a variey of finishes o provide corrosion resisance and o mee he demanding aesheic requiremens of many archiecural applicaions. The bar used in his sysem has a minimum yield of 500MPa. Bars are available in nine diameers from 8mm o 42mm. Performance deails are shown on page 10. Bars are eiher unreaed, zinc plaed or ho-dip galvanised and are available in mos sizes up o 6 meres in lengh. The availabiliy of each size of bar is given on page 11. The sysem can be exended over he maximum bar lengh by he inclusion of couplers or anchor discs. Discs are supplied in he same range of surface finishes as he bars. All fork connecors and locking nus are zinc plaed as sandard o provide a basic resisance o corrosion. The fork connecors and couplers are designed o allow adjusmens o be made o he sysem lengh wihou he need for urnbuckles. Oher finishes, in addiion o hose menioned above, are available on reques. All sysems are suiable for paining, which Ancon recommends is carried ou in-siu raher han prior o insallaion o ensure hreads and oher recesses are unaffeced. Ancon 500 Tension Sysem Sainless Seel The sainless seel Ancon 500 Sysem is recommended for applicaions ha demand corrosion resisance and a mainenance-free life, or where an aracive, polished finish is required. Sainless seel bars can be supplied in nine diameers, in mos cases in lenghs up o 6 meres. Performance deails are shown on page 10 and he availabiliy of each size of bar is given on page 11. The sysem can be exended beyond he maximum bar lengh by he inclusion of couplers or anchor discs. The fork connecors and couplers are designed o allow adjusmens o be made o he sysem lengh wihou he need for urnbuckles. Surface finish is usually an imporan facor in applicaions using sainless seel. Ancon bars are brigh drawn as sandard bu can be hand polished if required. The sainless seel forks 4 Tel:

5 and locking nus can be supplied elecropolished, sain-polished or hand polished. The phoographs below provide a good indicaion of he available finishes; acual finishes may differ slighly. Couplers and anchor discs are supplied wih a smooh machined finish as sandard, and can be sain-polished or hand polished when required. All available finishes and order codes are shown on page 13. Isolaion Sysem Isolaion maerial is supplied as sandard wih he sainless seel sysem o enable is fixing o a connecing plae of a dissimilar meal. Each sainless seel fork connecor is supplied wih wo clear, self-adhesive, PET (polyeser) washers o be applied around he fixing hole eiher side of he srucure. Sainless seel pins feaure a PTFE coaing around he barrel. Elecro-polished sainless seel fork and locking nu wih brigh drawn bar Ancon 360 Tension Sysem Carbon Seel The Ancon 360 Sysem is available in wo sizes for applicaions requiring a bar diameer above 42mm. This carbon seel sysem exends he Ancon range o 56mm and a capaciy of 807.5kN. Similar in appearance o he Ancon 500, his sysem uses bar wih a minimum yield srengh of 360MPa. All echnical deails for he Ancon 360, including performance deails, dimensions and he available lenghs of each size of bar are shown adjacen o he Ancon 500 on pages 10 and 11. Ancon Compression Sysems To complemen he Tension Sysem range, Ancon designs and manufacures Compression Sysems. These sysems use he same fork connecors and locking nus as he Tension Sysem bu use high srengh ubes insead of bars. They are available in boh carbon and sainless seel in a variey of sizes and finishes. Fork Connecors & Locking Nus Ancon fork connecors are supplied wih a locking nu which provides a nea ransiion from bar o fork. Forks and heir locking nus have lef or righ hand hreads, and are supplied complee wih a pin. They are samped wih he size and eiher he leer R or L o idenify he hand of he hread. The locking nus firmly lock he bar o he fork and ensure ha he connecion remains secure. The inernally hreaded secion of he locking nu is recessed o allow he hreaded end of he bar o be hidden when he insallaion is complee. Adjusmens o he lengh of he sysem can sill be made afer insallaion wihou a urnbuckle, by loosening he locking nu and roaing he bar. The exen of his adjusmen depends on he size of he bar, bu will range from ±9mm for an Ancon 500/8 o ±45mm for an Ancon 360/56. Carbon seel forks and locking nus are zinc plaed as sandard. Sainless seel forks and locking nus are elecro-polished as sandard and can also be supplied sain or hand polished. Each sainless seel fork is supplied wih wo clear, self-adhesive, PET (polyeser) washers o isolae he sysem from a connecing plae of a dissimilar meal. Pins The pins are a wo-par consrucion and once insalled are flush wih he fork. The insallaion requires a win-pin driver. Two driver bis of he appropriae size are supplied wih each Ancon sysem. This ype of fixing, known as Snake Eyes *, allows a high orque o be achieved wihou damage o he pin. The female secion of he pin is locaed hrough he fork connecor and emporarily held in posiion. A second driver is hen used o wind he male secion ino posiion creaing a secure connecion. Sainless seel pins are supplied wih a PTFE coaing around he barrel, as illusraed, o isolae he sysem from a connecing plae of a dissimilar meal. Compression Sysems Ancon designs and manufacures Compression Sysems which comprise sandard fork connecors and pins wih bespoke high srengh ubes, raher han he ie bars shown on page 7. 7 Tie Bars Tie bars have a righ-hand hread a one end and a lef-hand hread a he oher. Flas are pressed ino he bar close o each end. These allow he bar o be screwed ino he fork connecors and adjusmens o be made a any ime afer assembly. Neiher couplers nor urnbuckles will be required for applicaions using a single bar beween wo forks. The bar is correcly insalled when all hreads are hidden wihin he locking nu. Unreaed bar Zinc plaed bar The availabiliy of each size of bar is given on page 11. All bars are cu o a olerance of ±2mm of he specified lengh. Carbon seel bars are available eiher unreaed, wih he elecrodeposied zinc coaing Fe/Zn12/A or are ho-dip galvanised. Ho-dip galvanised bar Sainless seel bars are brigh drawn as sandard or hand polished when required. Couplers Couplers have righ and lef hand hreads and are used in applicaions where more han one bar is required beween forks. They are supplied wih a locking nu for each end of he coupler. Adjusmens o he lengh of he sysem can sill be made afer insallaion, by loosening he locking nu and roaing he bar. Couplers are machined from bar and can have he provision for a hanger o be fied o limi he deflecion of bars of 16mm diameer or greaer. If a hanger is required a lug is welded o he coupler. Sainless seel couplers can be supplied wih a polished finish o mach he sysem. Anchor Discs Anchor discs allow up o eigh bars o be conneced ogeher. They can be used a he cenre of convenional cross bracing, or where several bars need o be conneced a one poin. Anchor discs are machined from plae and can be supplied polished or coaed o mach he surface finish of he ie bars. Ancon can design and manufacure plaes in special shapes o replace sandard anchor discs and sui he aesheic requiremens of an applicaion. Cross Couplers When forming a cross brace, a Cross Coupler offers a sreamlined alernaive o an anchor disc and minimises he number of fork connecors and locking nus required. Cross Couplers are available in zinc-plaed carbon and sainless seel o sui bar sizes from 10 o 24. 8 Tension and Compression Sysems Applicaions Ancon has supplied Tension Sysems o many srucures and buildings. The wide range of componens can be used o creae a variey of assemblies, from simple ie bars o complex bracing sysems involving several bars joined a one poin. The following applicaions demonsrae he variey of uses. Timber Consrucion A combinaion of imber and seel can use he bes properies of each maerial and achieve a cos-effecive and aracive design. Ancon Tension Sysems can be conneced o he imber compression members, and if high loads are involved, several bars can be used ogeher. Roof Srucures Trusses and laice frames which suppor roofs can benefi from he replacemen of ension members wih he Ancon sysem. This will allow generous sie adjusmens o be made o accommodae inaccuracies wihin he frame. This would no be possible wih a convenionally boled frame. Tension bars wih a high srengh, rolled hread are also available. Canopies Canopies are frequenly suppored from above o provide unobsruced access below. 9 Sainless Seel Sysems Sainless seel is used for applicaions where a mainenance-free life is imporan or where a high qualiy polished finish is required. This can be paricularly impressive when used in conjuncion wih large areas of glazing. Cross-Bracing The use of anchor discs or cross couplers form a cross brace, allowing bars o lie in he same plane. This removes he need o offse bars, wih he disc or coupler providing an ineresing design feaure for he panel. Glazed Srucures The passage of ligh is normally a vial consideraion in he design of glazed srucures. The small profile of he Ancon Tension Sysem ensures he maximum ransmission of ligh while enhancing he overall appearance of he srucure. 9

10 Tension and Compression Sysems Performance and Dimensions The loads indicaed below are based on he design mehod of AS 4100 and include a capaciy facor j of 0.9 where he bar governs he design and 0.8 where he fork and pin capaciy governs he design. An appropriae load facor will need o be applied o he characerisic loads in accordance wih AS/NZS Forks mus be correcly aligned, and posiioned in he same plane o ensure ha bending is no inroduced ino he ension sysem. Ancon Tension Sysems are no suiable for dynamic loads. 13 Connecing Plaes Connecing plaes should be designed o sui each applicaion. The criical dimensions are provided in he able and diagrams. In he examples shown here θ is 45. These plaes should be manufacured from eiher grade S355 carbon seel or grade sainless seel; users should consider he corrosion properies of he maerial seleced. Specifying and Ordering Ancon Tension Sysems are supplied as full sysems and are no available as individual componens. Sysem lenghs are measured beween he cenres of he pins in he forks. The maximum bar lenghs are shown in he able on page 11 and should be considered when deermining he sysem lengh. Elecrodeposied zinc coaing Fe/Zn12/A on bars and discs will provide some proecion agains corrosion, bu is only inended o be used for sysems which are inernal insallaions. Ho-dip galvanising will provide greaer proecion bu should be considered as only par of he overall proecion reamen. Sainless seel affords he greaes proecion and does no require any furher reamen. The Ancon Tension Sysem can be specified as follows: Sysem / size / sysem lengh / maerial / finish. A fully polished Ancon 500 sainless seel sysem using 16mm diameer bar, 2750mm beween he pins would be specified as:- Ancon 500/16/2750/SS/6. The maerial and finish codes are from he adjacen able. 14 Tension and Compression Sysems Insallaion Guidance I is advisable o assemble ension bars on he ground firs, before lifing ino posiion over he connecing plaes. The locking nus should be fully screwed ono he bar a each end and he bar screwed ino he forks, ensuring full hread engagemen, using an open-ended spanner of he correc size. The locking nus mus be urned back o he fork and ighened using sof ouch pliers for Ancon 500/8 o 500/12 or a hook spanner for Ancon 500/16 and above and he Ancon 360 Sysem. On a level surface as close as possible o he final fixing locaion, assemble he full sysem, wihou pins, o he required pin-o-pin dimension. The full assembly should be lifed over one connecing plae, avoiding excessive sag by using lifing equipmen or emporary props as appropriae. Secure he sysem in place wih he pin. Repea he process a he oher connecing poin. Final adjusmen/ensioning of bars can now ake place. Adjusmen should be shared beween componens o ensure adequae bar engagemen hroughou he sysem. Tighen he locknus agains fork ends (and couplers if used), ensuring no hreads are visible, o complee he insallaion. Oher Ancon Producs Wall Ties and Resrain Fixings In addiion o sandard caviy and veneer wall ies, Ancon manufacures ies in a variey of lenghs and ypes for resraining brickwork, blockwork and sonework. These ies can be fixed o concree and srucural seelwork, as well as any ype of masonry. Masonry Suppor Sysems Masonry cladding on concree or seel frames is normally suppored from sainless seel suppor sysems. Ancon MDC Sysems creae a coninuous angle o suppor he ouer leaf of masonry. Ancon Individual Brackes suppor masonry feaures such as curves and arches. A full design service is available o specifiers and users of Ancon sysems. Shear Load Connecors Ancon DSD and ESD Shear Load Connecors are used o ransfer shear across expansion and conracion joins in concree. They are more effecive a ransferring load and allowing movemen o ake place han sandard dowels, and can be used o eliminae double columns a srucural movemen joins in buildings. A Lockable dowel is also available for emporary movemen joins in posensioned concree frames.
