OVERVIEW LeafSpy extracts and displays infrmatin frm the Leaf thrugh a user supplied OBDII adapter plugged int the Leaf's OBDII cnnectr lcated under the Leaf's dash. OBDII adapters cme in three basic types depending n the methd used t cmmunicatins with yur Andrid device. The three types are standard Bluetth (requiring a pairing step), Bluetth 4.x LE (n pairing needed) and WiFi. See the OBDII Hardware sectin fr recmmendatins. Leaf Spy cnsists f frm 2 t 5 main infrmatin screens depending n the versin f Leaf Spy yu have installed. Leaf Spy Lite has tw main screens. The Battery Status screen and a secnd screen that can be tggled between displaying the variatin in vltage levels between the 96 cells that make up the High Vltage battery pack (the less variatin between cells the better balanced and the mre energy the pack can hld) and a display f the fur ( MY) r three (2013 n up MY) battery pack temperature sensrs. Leaf Spy adds three additinal graphs t the secnd screen and adds tw additinal screens (3 and 4). In additin t the vltage histgram and temperature chart the secnd screen can als display a graph f charging pwer, %SOC, %Gids and if quick charging battery temperature during a charge and an elevatin/speed graph. Just tap n the secnd screen t cycle thrugh these fur graphs/charts. The tw additinal screens (3 and 4) are a simple summary screen shwing key infrmatin in a large fnt and a mre detailed summary screen shwing much mre infrmatin such as estimated driving distance remaining, tire pressures and energy usage per functin (mtr, accessries, heater, A/C). Leaf Spy Pr adds a Service screen (5) that allws viewing and changing service infrmatin nrmally nly available t the dealer such as reading/clearing Diagnstic Truble Cdes (DTC) and an experimental Brake mnitr/mtr Pwer screen. Overview f Screens Lcated in the lwer left crner f each screen is an indicatr that shws hw many screens are available (2,4 r 5) and which screen is currently displayed. Swipe left r right t change t the next r previus screen. Yu can als tap the bttm center f the screen t select the next screen r d a lng tap t select the previus screen. First and last screens wrap. In the upper right crner f mst screens are three dashed line. If yur device des nt have a dedicated key r key sequence t bring up the applicatin's menu then tap this area t bring up the LeafSpy Menu. The Menu has ptins t select the OBDII adapter LeafSpy shuld use (g here the first time yu start LeafSpy), access the Settings menu, view the trip lg, bring up the Abut screen (frm which yu can access the change histry and built-in LeafSpy help screens) and exit the applicatin. Pressing and hlding dwn n the three dash lines in the upper right crner f a screen will display an verlay f "ht" areas n that screen that can be tapped alng with a shrt descriptin f their assigned functin(s). 1

2 The 12 vlt battery vltage is displayed in the lwer left area f the first fur screens. Battery current (amps) will als be displayed fr mdel years 2011/2012. Depending n screen size yu may need t be in landscape mde t see the 12 vlt battery's current (amps) reading. Screen 1 is the Battery Pack Status screen. The tp f the screen shws the battery AHr rating (which will slwly decline with age), State f Health (SOH), battery pack vltage and current, VIN/pack serial number, Hx (% f new battery cnductance), dmeter, Quick Charge cycles and L1/L2 charge cycles/cnnectins. The center f the screen shws a bar chart f the vltage f each f the 96 cell pairs making up the High Vltage battery pack. In the upper right crner is the vltage difference between the highest and lwest cell in millivlts(mv). Tap the tp f the chart t zm ut and bttm t zm in. A Red clred vltage bar indicates a small bleeder lad is being applied t that cell in rder t drain energy frm it t better balance it with the ther cells. The bttm area belw the x axis lists the minimum, average, maximum cell vltages and delta between the minimum and maximum cell vltages as well as the temperature readings frm the 3 r 4 sensrs mnitring the battery pack. The delta between lwest t highest temperature sensr is als displayed. Alng the left edge is the selected mv scale with 50 mv being the smallest. Zming In and Out changes this scale. Screen 2 displays ne f five graphs. Tapping the center f the screen selects the next graph and a lng tap selects the previus graph. The number f the current graph is displayed n the bttm left f the screen. Graph 1 is a battery cell Histgram that displays the variatin in cell vltages. Less variatin between cells is a sign f a better balanced pack that can hld mre usable energy. Graph 2 displays the battery pack temperature sensrs. Graph 3 displays the active r last charge cycle mnitred by LeafSpy. The graph plts the SOC%, Gids% and charge pwer as the battery is being charged. During a Quick Charge the battery pack temperature is als graphed. The graph is autmatically saved at the end f a charge fr later review. Graph 4 recrds the elevatin and speed during a drive and aut resets at the start f each drive. The graph can be saved fr later review. Nte: The Andrid device must have GPS fr this functin t wrk. Graph 5 is the "Efficiency" graph that displays the last 32 samples f efficiency which ccur at 1 km intervals while driving. The mst recent sample appears n the right. Swiping up r dwn selects a Wh/mile(Wh/km) r miles/kwh(km/kwh) display. Screen 3 is a table shwing State f Charge, available battery energy in kwh, current battery Ah, battery vltage, a Wh cunter that shws energy used during a drive, battery temperature, estimated distance remaining and Gids. At the bttm f the screen is a displays f the Climate Cntrl state including HVAC mde, pwer used, fan speed, air flw directin and set temperature. Screen 4 is the Summary screen. It displays battery and energy usage infrmatin, pwer used per functin (mtr, accessries, PTC heater, A/C), tire pressures, delta between tires, estimated trip distance and utside temperature. Screen 5, when enabled, adds a Service screen that allws viewing and changing service infrmatin nrmally nly available t the dealer such as reading/clearing Diagnstic Truble Cdes (DTC), reading all the ECU versin numbers and battery serial number and changing the aut headlight n/ff, interir light n/ff and aut dr lck/unlck cnditins. 2

3 OBDII Hardware In rder fr LeafSpy t cmmunicate with a Leaf a user supplied OBDII adapter must first be installed in the Leaf's OBDII scket lcated under the dash abve the driver's left knee. The Leaf must be turned n (dash gauges active, nt just ACC mde) and after starting LeafSpy fr the first time the OBDII adapter must be selected using the "Select OBDII" ptin. LeafSpy supprts three types f OBDII adapters: Bluetth 4.x LE, standard Bluetth and WiFi. The recmmended OBDII adapter type is the newer Bluetth 4.x LE which is lw pwer and requires n pairing. There are tw supprted Bluetth 4.x LE adapters the LELink available frm Amazn and the PLX Kiwi 3. Of the tw the LELink is the recmmended adapter. The cheap standard Bluetth OBDII adapters available n ebay and ther places are hard t recmmend due t tw issues. The first is that mst standard Bluetth OBDII adapters are cheap clnes f the riginal ELM327. This was riginally nt a prblem as they supprted the required ELM327 cmmands t cmmunicate with the Leaf. But a year r tw ag these cheap adapters started t change as utline belw in mre detail. They were cst reduced resulting in critical ELM327 cmmands nt needed t cmmunicate with a gas car being drpped. Instead f reducing the versin number (fewer cmmands supprted) the versin number either stayed the same (1.5) r changed t 2.1. Making the versin number meaningless. An adapter that really supprted the ELM327 v1.2 r v2.1 cmmand set wuld wrk with LeafSpy. The secnd issue is with the Bluetth OBDII adapter that had previusly been recmmend which was the Knnwei KW This supprted the required cmmands but has recently been cst reduced. Hwever, the cst reductin is nt the issue as the supprted cmmands are still there. Instead the wrng resistr is being used t terminate the +/- CAN signals. Due t a design r manufacturing errr instead f a 120 hm resistr being used it was changed t a 20 hm resistr. If plugged int the Leaf this lw resistr value will prevent the CAN bus frm functining prperly and can result in an i- Key fault, nt being able t drive the Leaf and ther strange behavir. If yu have a Knnwei KW-902 yu shuld check the resistance between pins 6 and 14. A reading f 20 hms indicates a defective adapter which shuld nt be plugged int yur Leaf. The CAN bus is fault tlerant s if yu have plugged it in unplugging shuld allw the Leaf t resume nrmal peratin. If yu are lucky enugh t already have r buy a standard Bluetth OBDII adapter that still supprt the full cmmand set the adapter must first be paired with the Andrid device using the Andrid Bluetth Settings menu. The typical PIN is "1234". Then when LeafSpy is first started g int the LeafSpy Menu and select the "Select OBDII" => "Bluetth Paired Devices" t bring up a list f paired device. Frm the list select the OBDII adapter then reenter the PIN. At this time it seems all WiFi OBDII adapters supprt the required ELM327 cmmands and can reprt v1.5 r v2.1. Mst are large and will extend abut 3" dwn frm the bttm f the dash s culd interfere with yur legs. Being WiFi they have a much lnger range but the tradeff is much higher pwer drain frm the Leaf 12v battery when the Leaf is ff. When LeafSpy is first started g int the LeafSpy Menu and select the "Select OBDII" => "WiFi Devices" t bring up a list f Netwrks. Select the OBDII adapter netwrk and if a passwrd is required enter it n the next screen Recently it has becme harder t find a lw cst OBDII Bluetth adapter that wrks with the Leaf due t a recent cst reductin change made by many f the Asian manufactures f clne ELM327 adapters. These manufactures have eliminated the dedicated PIC prcessr that decded and execute the ELM cmmands. That functin has nw been cmbined int the existing Bluetth prcessr saving several dllars in cst. Whether because f cde space limitatins r inexperience in the ELM cmmand set the critical cmmands needed t cmmunicate with the Leaf have been drpped. T make things cnfusing fr the buyer these lwer cst (t prduce) ELM327 adapters are given a versin number f 2.1 instead f the previus 1.5 designatin. Since cmmands have been drpped nt added it is ttally inaccurate t label them as 2.1 which shuld match the versin f the ELM cmmand set supprted. Adapters bught frm the same seller befre and after the change can lk exactly the same utside. Only by pening them up fr examinatin can a difference be seen (lack f PIC prcessr). 3

4 LeafSpy des nt lk at the versin number reprted by the ELM327 adapter. It is nt until LeafSpy attempts t cnfigure the ELM327 fr cmmunicatins with the Leaf des LeafSpy discver the lack f supprt fr the needed ELM cmmands. If the ELM327 reprting a versin number f 2.1 actually supprted the fficial versin 2.1 ELM cmmand set it wuld wrk with LeafSpy. This incrrect labeling as versin 2.1 gives the impressin that LeafSpy des nt supprt ELM versin 2.1 which is ttal incrrect. 4

5 Recent Changes New Service functin (VSP) t allw cntrlling the inside and utside sunds generated by the Leaf. On screen 1 the difference between the highest and lwest cell vltages is nw displayed in a large fnt in the upper right side f the screen. Optinal "mnitr" infrmatin is displayed n the left side. Added an "Efficiency" Graph that displays efficiency fr the last 32 km in 1 km intervals. Three new Service functins. Cnfigure Headlight aut turn n/ff cnditins, Cnfigure Interir light turn ff cnditins and read/display ECU versin infrmatin. The ECU infrmatin read als includes the battery pack serial number which nce read will alternate with the VIN at the tp f screen 1. Service functin nw supprts reading DTCs frm the VSP and AVM ECUs. The DTC clear functin supprts clearing the special P0AA1 DTC. Server supprt that allws infrmatin t be peridically sent t a predefined server. Server cnfiguratin is dne n the Settings/Server panel. At the bttm f screens a perid "." after the date indicates that the server functin has been enabled. Tire pressures can nw be displayed in kpa units. Mtr and Inverter temperatures are displayable in the user selectable area n screen 4. The efficiency used t calculate remaining range t event can nw be autmatically calculated using current Trip average, since last charge average r last km average. Fur new ptins n the Settings/Optins panel. One t disable the autmatic selectin f the energy usage graph n screen 4 if the PTC heater is active, thers t disable all sund, save Trip/Charge lg when exiting app and a special "Cyangenmd" mde t try t wrk arund that OS's pr Bluetth implementatin. Supprt fr tw Bluetth 4.x Lw Energy (LE) OBDII adapters (LELink and PLX Kiwi 3). These adapters require n setup r pairing but nly that Bluetth be enabled. They are recmmended ver the previus standard Bluetth and WiFi OBDII adapters because f their ease f use and lw pwer frm bth the Andrid device and the Leaf. In BMS nly mde the maximum lgging rate has been increased t less than nce per secnd. If Drpbx has been enabled then exiting LeafSpy will frce a final synchrnizatin f the selected files. At the start f a drive tire pressures warnings are suppressed until the TPMS units wake up and start sending pressure data. Used a better calculatin fr Ambient temperature. A manual adjustment is n lnger needed. Used a new calculatin fr mtr pwer which gives a mre accurate value fr bth and the newer Leafs. Fixed prblem where crrupt cnfiguratin files wuld cause LeafSpy t crash n startup. Elevatin and Charge graphs time axis nw scales t minutes, hurs and days. Charge graph has the ptin (by swiping up/dwn) t fill in missing data thrugh straight line apprximatin. 5

6 Key Features Drpbx Synchrnizatin Added supprt fr syncing selected file types with yur Drpbx. The Drpbx app des nt need t be installed t use this feature. A sync interval f 1, 2, 5, 10 r 15 minutes can be specified. By default the Trip/Charge lg is always synchrnized. The ther types f files that can be synchrnized are: Lg Files Charge & Elevatin Files Trace & Errr Files A new flder structure is created in yur Drpbx t hld the upladed files. The new flders are: Apps/LeafSpy Pr/ - fr Trip/Charge lg Apps/LeafSpy Pr/Lg Files - fr Lg Files Apps/LeafSpy Pr/Charge & Elevatin Lg - fr Charge and Elevatin lgs Apps/LeafSpy Pr/Trace Files - fr ELM traces Apps/LeafSpy Pr/Debug Lgs - fr debug files Alternate Methd t Read Tire Pressures Use this new ptin n the Settings/Tire Pressure panel when the default methd des nt wrk (seen n 2015 UK Leafs). Remap Tire Pressures As an alternative t ding a Tire Registratin this ptin n the Settings/Tire Pressure panel allws yu t simply mve the pressures readings arund t match their actual lcatin n the Leaf. Virtual Tire Registratin This ptin n the Settings/Tire Registratin panel is used after the tires have been rtated t autmatically remap the tires t their new lcatins based n the type f rtatin selected. T use this ptin the tires must have been displayed in their crrect psitin befre the tires were rtated. Sft Menu A sft Menu key (marked by three dashes) is available in the upper right crner f screens 1 thru 4. Tapping this area brings up the menu t Select OBDII, Settings, View Trip Lg, Abut & Help r Exit. This prvides a way t bring up this menu n newer andrid devices that d nt have a dedicated menu key. Overlay Help In additin t bring up the Menu the upper right area als serves as a way t verlay the current screen with help infrmatin abut tap sensitive areas. By pressing and hld dwn n the upper right crner (marked by the three dashes) an verlay will appear. Areas marked in a gld clr are single tap areas and areas marked in green have bth a shrt and lng tap functin. Cuntdwn Cunter On screen 4 a user settable distance Cuntdwn cunter can be displayed by ding a lng tap n the distance remaining t event number. When enabled the Cuntdwn cunter will be displayed t the left f the distance t event number. The Cuntdwn cunter number will als have a dwn arrw t its right. The default starting distance is cntrlled n the Settings/Trip Distance panel. The value can als be changed n screen 4 by hlding dwn either the plus (+) r minus (-) buttn. The fnt size f these tw numbers can be changed by placing the screen in "Screen Frzen" mde (tap lwer right status bx) and then using the +/- buttns t adjust the fnt size. Backgrund Lgging is supprted. This means that if Lgging is enabled it will cntinue even if Leaf Spy lses fcus as when anther applicatin is started. Depending n yur Andrid device lgging may cntinue even when the Andrid device is placed in sleep mde.. Yu can determine if yur Andrid device supprts backgrund peratin while in Sleep mde by running Leaf Spy until it cnnects t the Leaf then place the Andrid device in Sleep mde. Lk at the OBDII adapter and if yu see a light flash every 5 t 10 secnds the backgrund functin is still active. Lgging des nt need t be active t run this test. 6

7 Brake Frce graph & Mtr Pwer graph are experimental features f Leaf Spy Pr. It cnsists f a new graph screen that can be tggled, by tapping it, between shwing a Brake Frce screen r a Mtr Pwer screen. Warning: If yu experience any cnnectin prblems r prblems mving between screens then Disable this feature! Bth screens shw regeneratin either as a prtin f the braking frce being applied t the wheels r as pwer being generated by the mtr. T enable this functin g t the Settings/Braking & Mtr Mnitr panel and check Enable. This panel als has an ptin t cntrl the Brake Windw size which cntrls the number f secnds f Brake histry that is displayed. Anther ptin cntrls whether braking frce is displayed at the tp f the Mtr mnitr screen. If yu have the Service Screen enabled it will verride displaying these graphs. T see these graphs just disable the Service Screen in Settings. 7

8 Navigatin There are tw ways t mve between screens. Swiping - Use yur finger t Swipe left r right. Chse an area f the screen that des nt have active tuch areas (Buttns). Starting yur swipe ff the active screen als seem t wrk better. OR Tapping - T mve t the next screen Tap the *O*** area at the bttm left half f the screen. T mve t the previus screen Tap and hld yur finger dwn.,,,, In this area swipe left r right t mve between screens Avid swiping ver "Active" areas such as buttns : :,,,, Tap/Lng Tap t Status *OOOO Chg Scrns Area : :: : : : Status Area The bttm right crner f mst screens cntains a status bx. This clred status bx indicates the current state f the cnnectin t the ELM OBDII adapter and the Leaf. The general meaning f the clrs is:...status... Yellw: trying t cnnect t ELM Adapter...status... Orange: ELM k, trying t cnnect t Leaf Cnnected Green: cnnected t Leaf, cmmand number Screen Frzen Gray: the screen is frzen fr viewing Offline Blue: means the link is Offline Tapping the clred status bx will tggle between shwing status and the Screen Frzen state. When in the Screen Frzen updates t the screen are suspended. Data is still read frm the Leaf but is nt updated t the screen. Use this mde t study the data n the screen withut it being updated with anther sample. This mde als suspends displaying the peridic cnnectin retry messages. Menu The Menu buttn (three stacked lines) is lcated in the tp right crner f the screen. Tapping the Menu area will bring up a menu f items acrss the bttm f the screen. The five menu items are Select OBDII, View Trip Lg, Settings (Gear), Abut/Helpand Exit. 8

9 Select OBDII - Use this ptin when LeafSpy is first installed r when changing t a different OBDII adapter. Select frm a list f OBDII types. Device list Bluetth 4.x LE Bluetth Paired Devices WiFi Devices Wrk Offline Bluetth 4.x LE - Selecting this ptin causes LeafSpy t autmatically search fr ne f the tw supprted Bluetth 4.x OBDII adapters (LELink & PLX Kiwi 3). There is n pairing needed r pssible with a Bluetth 4.x LE device. Bluetth Paired Devices - Selecting this ptins brings up a list f currently paired Bluetth devices. Be sure t pair any new Bluetth OBDII device befre selecting this ptin r it will nt be in the list. G t the Andrid Settings/Bluetth screen t search fr and pair with any new OBDII device. When prmpted enter the passwrd used during pairing. WiFi Devices - Selecting this ptins brings up a list f WiFi netwrks. Frm the list select the netwrk f yu WiFi OBDII adapter then if needed enter the netwrk passwrd. Wrk Offline - Select this temprary ptin if yu wish t use LeafSpy t review data withut cnnecting t a Leaf. It des nt change the previusly selected OBDII adapter. It nly disables using it during this LeafSpy sessin. View Trip Lg - Selecting this item displays the Trip Lg. Once the trip lg appears a single tap will frce a jump t the mst recently cmpleted trip lcated at the bttm f the screen. 11 [O****] Screen 1 Battery Status The Battery Status screen can be divided int three sectins: tp, middle and bttm. Pressing the three dashed line area in the upper right crner will bring up the screen help verlay that identifies areas that can be tapped t change what r hw things are displayed. Orange areas have a single tap functin and Green areas have bth a shrt and lng tap functin.,, _, Tp Battery Status Area Sectin _:,, _, Middle Sectin Tap tp half t zm ut Tap bttm half t zm in : : _: _, Bttm vltage range & temp Sectin _:,,,, Tap/Lng Tap t Status *OOOO Chg Scrn Area : :: : : : Tp Sectin has the fllwing infrmatin: AHr Ampere/Hur is a rating f the present battery capacity. This is determined by the Battery Management Cntrller in the Leaf and decreases as the battery ages. It gives an estimate f the battery's capacity t hld energy when fully charged, nt hw much energy is currently in the battery. Think f it as the size f the tank nt hw much is currently in the tank. As the battery ages this number will decrease indicating that less and less energy can be stred in the battery when fully charged. If yu have a laptp yu have seen this happen. The amunt f time the laptp can run n a fully charged battery decreases as the batteries get lder. SOH State f Health is anther indicatin f the battery's ability t hld and release energy and is reprted as a percentage. When the battery is new SOH=100%. When SOH drps t 85% fr a mnth r s the Leaf lses the first capacity level segment displayed n the right side f the Leaf's central dash display. The capacity gauge is the rightmst uter curved clumn f segments next t "1" at the tp and "0" at the bttm with the last tw segments being clred red. xxx.xxv Vltage f high vltage battery. Example "380.21V" r 380.2V depending n which ECU prvided the reading. xxx.xa Amperage f the high vltage battery is displayed in landscape mde and als in prtrait mde if yu have a high reslutin screen. A psitive value indicates current ut f the battery and a negative value current int the battery (Regen r charging). VIN/Battery Serial # The vehicle identificatin number indicates which vehicle the data came frm. It is surrunded by parentheses if the data being displayed is saved data as ppsed t data just read frm a Leaf. If the ECUs have been read using the Service functin then the High Vltage battery pack serial number will alternate with the VIN. Use the Freeze Screen functin t temprarily stp the alternating. 11

12 Hx The meaning f this number is nt fully understd but it appears t be inversely related t the battery internal resistance. As the internal resistance f the battery pack increases it is thught this percentage decreases. As internal resistance increases mre energy is lst within the pack and the pack heats up mre under lad. xa yv Example 31A 244V r 31A 5V (Only available n Mdels 2011/2012) When an EVSE is plugged int the Leaf these numbers indicate the maximum available current the EVSE can prvide the Leaf and the vltage supplied by the EVSE. Fr the first example the EVSE can prvide up t 31 amps f current and is supplying a charge vltage f 244 vlts. The secnd example shws the reading when the EVSE is attached t the Leaf but the Leaf is nt charging. In this case a vltage reading f arund 5 vlts can be expected. Od Odmeter reading in either miles r km depending n units selected in Settings/Units. QCs Number f Quick Charges. Each time a Quick Charge ccurs this number increments by 1. L1/L2s Number f L1/L2 cnnectins and charges. This number increases each time the J1772 charge crd is plugged int the Leaf. It als increases by ne fr each delayed charge that takes place. If the Leaf charge timer is nt active, s charging starts immediately when the charge crd is plugged in, then the cunt will increase by nly ne. But if the timer is active then the cunt will increase by tw. Once when the charge crd is initially plugged in and a secnd time when the timer starts the delayed charge. 13 SOC State f Charge indicates the amunt f charge currently in the battery. The amunt f energy this represents is nt fixed but decreases ver time as the battery ages. Since capacity decreases with age a new battery at 50% SOC hlds mre energy than a 5 year ld battery at 50% SOC. Nte: The SOC displayed here is nt the same as the ne displayed n the dash f later mdel Leafs. What is displayed by LeafSpy Pr is the true SOC as reprted by the battery management cmputer. The ne n the dash is adjusted t respnd like a traditinal gas gauge. The dash gauge will shw 100% and 0% whereas the real SOC never reaches thse values in rder t prtect the battery and extend its life. Cell Vltage Lss Inspectin This test is run autmatically anytime the Leaf is ON (nt ACC mde), in Park and the minimum cell pair vltage is belw vlts (i.e. belw lw battery warning level). This "Cell Vltage Lss Inspectin" test is based n Nissan's riginally published algrithm (2011 April Service Manual, sectin EVB-67) with the additin that there must be at least a 200 mv difference between the maximum and minimum cell pair vltage t run the test. The results f the inspectin replace the battery temperature sensr status line just belw the x axis n screen 1. Any weak cells are listed as "Weak Cells: xx yy zz" in red with xx yy zz being the weak cell numbers. If the test finds n weak cells the message "All Cells OK" will be displayed in green. 13

Displayed units (Fahrenheit r Centigrade) can be changed n the Settings/Units panel. The tp f the screen lists the available sensrs. Starting in 2013 Nissan remved sensr 3. The maximum, minimum temperatures and in parentheses the temperature difference between the highest and lwest sensrs is displayed belw the x axis. The y axis aut scales depending n the temperatures. A sample Quick Charge graph is displayed when LeafSpy is first installed. The first title line displays tw pwer numbers in kw. The first number is the pwer in kw ging int the battery pack and the secnd number is the pwer the charger is reprting. Nrmally these numbers are the same r almst the same. Fllwing the tw kw numbers is the file name if the data has been saved. If the data has nt yet been saved the wrds "Nt Saved" will be displayed. The data is autmatically saved at the end f a charge sessin. Fr an L1/L2 charge sessin the file name will be f the frm Qxx_Lyyy where xx is the number f Quick Charges and yyy is the number f L1/L1 charges/cnnectins. Fr a Quick Charge the file name will be f the frm Qxx_yyy (withut the "L") where xx and yyy are the same as fr an L1/L2 charge. The name difference makes it easy t distinguish an L1/L1 file frm a Quick Charge file. The secnd title line and ptinally third title line shw the current (charge in prgress) r last (if charge has ended) SOC percent, Gids percent and if a Quick Charge the battery pack temperature. The clr used t graph each f these parameters is als given. The y axis label lists the clrs used t plt the pwer. The left side y axis numbers aut scales in units f kw. The right side y axis label is in percent 0 t 100 and is used t read %SOC and %Gids. There is n scale fr the battery pack temperature but the 100% mark crrespnds t 150F/65.6C and the 0% mark t 0F/-17.7C. Use tw fingers t zm in/ut and a single finger t scrll left/right. 4) Elevatin Graph Since elevatin changes can affect driving range this graph allws yu t see the elevatin changes alng the rute as yu drive. The elevatin and speed data des nt cme frm the Leaf but instead frm the Andrid device's GPS. Therefre this graph nly applies t devices that have a built in real GPS functin. Accuracy f the pltted data is dependent n the number f satellites and hw lng it takes the GPS cntrller t acquire these satellites. As a result, the graph will give a general idea f the tpgraphy driven ver but is nt an abslute indicatin in terms f elevatin pltted. A sample elevatin graph is displayed when LeafSpy is first installed. Due t the inherent inaccuracies f GPS determined elevatin it is nt uncmmn when driving a rund trip fr the starting and ending elevatin t nt match up even thugh yu returned t the exact same spt. The graph will autmatically clear at the start f each drive and can als be manually cleared by tapping the Save/Lad buttn and selecting Clear. The tp title line displays the file name if the data has been saved. Once GPS has lcked n t sufficient satellites, the secnd title line displays the elevatin, (accuracy), speed and (clr f speed plt) (Elevatin 285 (+/-13) Speed 19 mph (Red)). The left axis label gives the units f elevatin and the clr f the elevatin plt. The right y axis units are mph r km/h. The x axis autmatically scales as mre data is added t the graph. Orange areas have a single tap functin and Green areas have bth a shrt and lng tap functin. There are five buttns n this screen. The text n all but the Reset buttn is used t displays additinal infrmatin. "Reset" This buttn nly appears if the energy usage cunter can be reset. This is cntrlled with the Cnfig Wh Cunter pulldwn n the Settings/Battery panel. "F" r "C" & type Use this buttn t change the type f temperature displayed t either the maximum, average r minimum battery temperature. The buttn text shws the units, type and in parenthesis the delta between the highest and lwest sensr readings. "miles" r "km" This buttn and the fllwing buttn are nly enabled when using the manual methd fr setting efficiency. They are disable when "Trip" (T), "Since Last Charge" (C) r "Instantaneus" (i) mdes are selected. The efficiency mde used is selected n Screen 4. In manual mde use this buttn t increase the efficiency number used t calculate the range t event. The text shws distance units (miles/km) and the currently select event (LBW, VLBW, x% r x.xkwh). The event can be changed n Screen 4 and fr the percent r kwh selectin n the Settings/Range panel. Efficiency Use this buttn t decrease the efficiency number used t calculate the range t event when using the manual methd fr determining efficiency. The tp line f the buttn lists the current efficiency number being used. If that number is prefaced with a letter the efficiency is being autmatically calculated based n distance traveled and energy used. There are three autmatic mdes based n distance used fr the calculatin. The fllwing table lists the letter and distance used in the calculatin. (n letter) - Efficiency manually entered T - Distance f current trip C - Distance since last charge i - Last km The text n the bttm f the buttn shws the units f efficiency (miles/kwh (km/kwh) r Wh/mile (Wh/km)) which can be changed n the Settings/Range panel. "GIDs" Use this buttn t switch between displaying the Gids value r Gids percent t the left f the buttn. The value nt being display t the left f the buttn is displayed n the buttn. The percentage is based n the maximum Gids entered n the Settings/Battery panel. Default is 281 Gids fr the 24 kwh pack and 357 Gids fr the 30 kwh pack. In landscape mde this buttn is mved t the tp. The fllwing infrmatin is displayed n the upper sectin f the screen. SOC = State f Charge: This is being read directly frm the Leaf's battery management system (BMS) and is based n the current capacity f the Leaf battery. That means if yu charge yur Leaf t 80% then at the cmpletin f the charge the SOC will always be 80% even after 8 years when the battery capacity has drpped t say half its riginal 17

18 capacity. It is nt an indicatin f the energy cntained in the battery. (Think f a shrinking gas tank. It can always be filled t the tp s 100% full but its size has shrunk frm 10 gallns t 5 gallns.) Nte: What is displayed here is the true SOC and may differ frm the ne displayed n the Leaf dash. T prtect the battery Nissan prevents the battery frm being fully charged t 100% and drained t 0%. Hwever, this wuld be cnfusing t drivers expecting a full charge t be 100% s the dash SOC is adjusted t display 100% when in fact the SOC is less. What is displayed here is the true engineering SOC value. Ah This is a prrated Ah number based n full charge Ah times present %SOC. S if SOC=50% then Ah displayed here wuld be half the fully charged Ah displayed at the tp f screen 1. V This is the vltage f the high vltage battery pack. A vltage frmat f xxx.xx indicates the reading is cming frm the BMS unit and a frmat f xxx.x indicates the reading is cming frm the VCM unit. When the BMS is nt respnding the VCM value is reprted instead. kwh = Apprximate energy currently stred in the battery. This number is calculated by multiplying the number f Gids read frm the Leaf times the Wh/Gids set n the Settings/Battery panel. The default Wh/Gids is The calculated kwh gives the best indicatin f available energy in the battery. Wh Resettable cunter that keeps track f energy changes in the battery. As the available energy in the battery changes this number is updated. In general as yu drive this number will increase giving an estimate f the energy used. While charging r during mtr regeneratin this number will decrease indicating an energy increase in the battery. If present, tapping the Reset buttn while a trip is active will clear all but the energy fr this trip. If n trip is active then pressing the Reset buttn will clear all energy used. What this cunter accumulates (Drive/Charge energy) and when it gets reset is cnfigured n the Settings/Battery panel. Temperature Battery temperature either in C r F depending n the units selected n the Settings/Units panel. The number in parenthesis is the difference between the minimum and maximum sensr reading. Tapping the label t the right f the number cycles the number displayed thrugh minimum, average and maximum temperature readings. Range Is an estimate f the remaining range t event based n the selected efficiency. The selected units f the distance (miles r km) is displayed n the first buttn. The current efficiency selected is displayed n the secnd buttn. When using a manually entered efficiency, pressing the first buttn increases estimated efficiency and pressing the secnd buttn decreases estimated efficiency used t calculate the remaining range t event. The units f efficiency are set n the Settings/Range panel. The chices are Miles/kWh (km/kwh) r Wh/Mile (Wh/km). The distance remaining may include a selectable reserve determined by the Settings/Range panel. GIDs This field indicates the remaining energy in the battery in terms f Gids. Gids is the name given t a value fund n the Leaf CAN bus that tracked clsely with the amunt f energy remaining in the Leaf Battery. It was first discvered by Gary Giddings. Later it was determined that Nissan uses this field t indicate the amunt f usable energy in the battery by multiplying it by On a new 2011 Leafs the maximum Gids is typically 281 r (281 x 77.5) kwh f usable energy frm the 24 kwh battery. Tapping the label t the right f the value will tggle the value between Gids and percent Gids. The fllwing infrmatin abut the Climate Cntrl system is display n the lwer sectin f the screen. CC Mde This field displays the climate cntrl (CC) mde which can be in ne f the fllwing nine mdes: blank Status f the climate cntrl system has nt yet been read by LeafSpy. Off Climate cntrl system is Off On Climate cntrl system is On but there is n air flwing because the fan is ff and recirculate mde is active. The third panel displays a distance t event estimate where the event can be either Lw Battery Warning, Very Lw Battery Warning r distance t a predefined reserve amunt f energy (defined n Settings/Range panel).
