Threds on ll fittings re chmfered to ssist ssembly nd void ʻcross thredingʼ. Femle fittings hve chmber behind the thred, permitting the mle thred to be ssembled without restriction or ʻbottomingʼ. Design stndrds ISO 49 : 994 is the interntionl stndrd for "Mlleble cst iron fittings threded to ISO 7-. This stndrd ws revised in December 994 nd, compred with the 98 edition, contined some technicl revisions relting to use of lterntive ferrous mterils, hot dip zinc cotings, disptch condition, pressure/temperture rtings, cceptnce tests, mrking nd qulity ssurnce. BS EN 0242 : 995 is the new British Europen Stndrd for "Threded pipe fittings in mlleble cst iron" first published in August 995 nd very closely follows ISO 49 : 994, the min difference being the inclusion of two informtive nnexes relting to "Assessment of conformity" nd the "Reltionship with the essentil requirements of the Construction Products Directive (84/06/EEC)". All Europen Stndrds hve to be dopted by the member countries of the EU nd ny conflicting ntionl stndrds withdrwn. BS4 nd 256: 2000 hs been retined to cover those fittings not in BS EN It should lso be noted tht BS EN 0242 detils number of fitting types nd sizes which were not included in BS 4 & 256 becuse they were not in regulr demnd nd/or not vilble from UK mnufcturers. BS 4 & 256 : 2000 specifies requirements for the design nd performnce of "Mlleble cst iron nd cst copper lloy threded pipe fittings" nd hs developed over mny yers. BS 4 ws first published in 922 nd BS 256 in 945, subsequently the two stndrds were combined in 968. The BS 4 design requires fittings to hve tper externl threds nd tper internl threds conforming to BS EN 0226 wheres the BS 256 design hs tper externl threds nd prllel internl threds. The 986 revision ws more closely relted to ISO 49 : 98 nd more ccurtely reflected the rnges of fittings vilble from UK mnufcturers. BS 4 & 256 hs lwys been techniclly more demnding thn ISO 49 nd consequently BS EN BS 4 & 256 were mended in August 995 to delete those fittings now covered by BS EN 0242, so the scope of BS 4 & 256 is now essentilly : () BS 4 design nd BS 256 design fittings in mlleble iron not covered by BS EN 0242, (b) BS 4 design fittings threded to ANSI B.20. (NPT) nd (c) BS 4 design fittings mde in cst copper lloy (bronze) mteril. Conformnce of Crne fittings Both mlleble iron nd steel fittings hve been verified by the British Stndrds Institute (BSI) s conforming to BS EN 0242 nd BS4 & 256, s pproprite, nd s such re permitted to ber the British Stndrds Kitemrk Logo - Kitemrk Licence No. KM0082. Some smll size fittings re mnufctured in steel nd will conform to BS EN 024. The Pressure Equipment Directive 97/2/EC (PED) The Directive pplies to the design, mnufcture nd conformity of pressure equipment nd ssemblies of pressure equipment with mximum llowble pressure greter thn 0.5 br. Much unnecessry lbour nd cretion of rndom lengths of pipe might be sved by the ppliction of few simple figures by the engineer when erecting the pipe line. Generlly the pipe line, section by section, is either ccommodted within fixed limits, usully the lines of building construction, or is fixed by prescribed dimensions. Except in the cse of continuous run of piping connected either by sockets or flnges, the engineer needs to know the length of pipe required to mke up between fixed positions of fittings prior to cutting nd threding. UNEQUAL FITTINGS: Unequl fittings (reducing or enlrging) re specified by the sizes of ech outlet, the sequence being dependent on the number of outlets: () For fittings hving two outlets, the lrger outlet is specified first. Shock pressures within pipe systems cn be tolerted with complete sfety. The corrosion resistnce of Crne mlleble iron is good when compred with grey cst iron nd mild steel for most generl pplictions including wter, gs nd stem. Crne bronze Crne bronze hs very good resistnce to corrosion by ggressive wters, stem nd other fluids which promote dezincifiction in certin copper lloys. It is lso suitble for wide rnge of tempertures. Mild steel BS4 nd 256 llow smll size ( 8 nd smller) stright fittings to be supplied in other ferrous mterils e.g. mild steel s n lterntive to mlleble cst iron, providing the mechnicl properties re t lest equivlent to the specified grde of mlleble iron. Glvnising Where dditionl resistnce to corrosion is required, mlleble cst iron fittings cn be hot-dip zinc coted (glvnised) prior to mchining. This process involves coting the fittings with zinc which, in ddition to its nturl resistnce to corrosion, provides electro-chemicl protection where the iron of the fitting is exposed by dmge. Mild steel fittings cn be supplied with proprietry zinc bsed coting. The coting weight on Crne glvnised fittings conforms to the requirements of BS EN ISO nd ASTM 5 with minimum coting of 60 g/m2 (2oz/ft2) equl to thickness of 86μm (0.004 in). Averge cotings re well in excess of this nd exceed the requirements given in BS EN 0242 nd ISO 49. Finished fittings re free of ny polycyclic romtic hydrocrbons. Mrking All Crne fittings re mrked with the logo nd where size permits, the fitting size nd Kitemrk symbol. In ddition, some cstings lso disply pttern identifiction number. This is normlly locted next to the bnd of the fitting. This number is used during the mnufcturing process s prt of the rigorous qulity control procedures to ensure consistent high qulity cstings.
