2 Diaphragm Seals Produt Overview Introdution Diaphragm Seals (or Chemial Seals) use a flexible barrier, or diaphragm, to isolate a pressure sensor (swith or transduer) from adverse effets of the proess fluid. Diaphragm seals are useful to: s s s s s s HOW IT WORKS Protet the sensor from the proess media (orrosive, abrasive, visous, rystallizing media, or high proess temperature) Protet the proess from the ontaminants (sanitary proess requiring lean-out, or high purity media). A diaphragm seal, when properly mounted to a sensor and filled, will aurately transmit proess pressure to the instrument. The pressure applied by the proess media is hydraulially transmitted from the flexible diaphragm, through the fill fluid between the diaphragm and the instrument, to the pressure element, thus engaging the swith or transduer. 3 Diaphragm Seals Produt Overview Appliation Considerations The following should be onsidered when hoosing a diaphragm seal: NOTE s s s s s Proess Charateristis:, temperature, hemial ompatibility, and visosity. Seal Mounting: Connetion to proess (threaded, flanged, lamped, or remote) and onnetion to instrument (usually NPT). Ambient Charateristis: Temperature, orrosive atmosphere, et. Instrument Considerations: Suffiient fluid displaement is required to drive instrument through its full range. This means, for example, you an t put an instrument with a large displaement on a seal with a small displaement. Remote instrument plaement requires a apillary onneting instrument to seal. Vauum Considerations: High vauums (over 25 Hg) or vauums with high temperatures require speial fill seletion, preparation, and proedures, as well as areful diaphragm seletion. Improper seal seletion may result in inreased system error, system failure, and possible damage or injury. SEAL TYPES Threaded Off-line Seals: Threaded off-line and flanged off-line seals are ommonly used in a variety of appliations. These have a standard leanout feature, allowing removal of the proess flange or lower housing without losing the fill. Mounted on a nipple off the line or using a standard ANSI flange. Flush Fae Seals: Designed for low displaement appliations where a build-up of solids aross the diaphragm is a onern. Threaded proess onnetion. Sanitary Seals: Designed for food, pharmaeutial and other sanitary appliations. Available to fit most standard piping systems with Tri-lamp onnetion. Standard fill is food grade glyerin. Mini-Seals: Designed for low displaement appliations where size or eonomy are the primary onsiderations. Speial Designs: Barksdale is ready to work with you on any high-performane diaphragm seal appliation, (that might exeed the stated limits) suh as high vauum, high temperature, high sterility, ustom design, high stati pressure with a low differential span, or high vauum with high temperature. Barksdale s eletro-mehanial swithes use a sensor suh as a diaphragm, dia-seal piston, or bourdon tube whih atuates an eletro-mehanial limit swith that opens or loses a iruit. Mehanial swithes do not require any power input to operate, and thus make exellent fail-safe devies. 5 Diaphragm Seals Appliable Eletroni Produts The following Barksdale transduer and solid state produts are approved for use with diaphragm seals. Barksdale s eletroni swithes use a piezo-resistive pressure sensing tehnology that transmits a voltage or urrent signal proportional to the system pressure or vauum. These swithes provide added funtionality to any system they are used in. 6 Threaded Off-Line Diaphragm Seals Series TS & TC Threaded Off Line Diaphragm Seals are a popular hoie for most appliations. The flush port is reommended for appliations where there may be a build up of solids and requires a simple means of leaning. These seals are available in all stainless steel onstrution, as well as a arbon steel upper flange for a more eonomial hoie.
