Unless the proedures and reommendations set out in Volume IV: Duraplus ABS Industrial Piping System Tehnial Manual have been stritly followed, all warranties are null and void. Solvent Cement Welding Duraplus TM ABS solvent ement is speially formulated to withstand the same working onditions as the rest of the Duraplus Industrial omponents. The ement operates by hemially attaking the outside of the pipe and the inside of the fittings and therefore the effiieny is greatly redued if these surfaes are not absolutely lean and properly prepared. NOTE: All warranties are ontingent upon the use of the orret Duraplus TM ABS Industrial Cleaner and Solvent Cement. IPEX takes no responsibility for any Duraplus System onstruted with other primers or solvent ements, or not fabriated with the instrutions ontained herein. joining pipe & fittings Preautions Do not thin solvent ement with leaner. NOTE: Solvent ement and leaners ontains toxi and flammable solvents. Suitable preautions must be taken to safeguard the health of the installers. Do not join near open flames and avoid smoking in the working area all ements and leaners are flammable. Do not use ements or leaners in onfined spaes under these onditions, solvents may have a naroti effet. Speial are should be taken if solvent ementing is done in the rain or in wet onditions. Always use lean appliators and do not use the same appliator for different types of ement. Always use a lean rag and appliator with the IPEX supplied leaner and solvent ement. Make sure ement ans are losed after use solvents evaporate and the ement effiieny may be impaired if the ontainer is left open. IPEX does not reommend the solvent ement joining of the Duraplus Industrial system to PVC. If neessary, this transition is best aomplished through the use of flanges. 1 Before beginning, assemble proper materials for the job (IPEX MEK leaner, Duraplus Industrial ABS ement, and appliator for the size of pipe and fittings to be assembled). Assemble proper Personal Protetive Equipment (PPE) for the job (Respirator, safety glasses, gloves and protetive lothing). 3 of 26

4 Handling & Installation Proedures 2 To make sure that the pipe is ut as square as possible. Use a miter box saw, a power saw with a blade designed to ut plasti or a pipe tube utter. The blade must be kept sharp. Use a square on the ut end of the pipe to make sure it has been ut squarely. If plasti tubing utters are used any, raised bead at the end of the pipe must be removed with a file or deburring tool. If not removed it may srape the ement away during pipe insertion into the fitting during the solvent ementing proess. 3 Use a knife, plasti pipe deburring tool, or file to remove burrs from the end of small diameter pipe. Be sure to remove all burrs from around the inside as well as the outside of the pipe. A slight hamfer (bevel) of about 15 should be added to the end to permit easier insertion of the pipe into the fitting. Failure to hamfer the edge of the pipe may remove ement from the fitting soket, ausing the joint to leak. For systems of 2" and above, the pipe must be end-treated with a 15 hamfer ut to a depth of approximately 3/32" (2.5mm). If burrs are not removed, they an srape hannels into surfae of the fitting soket during solvent welding. 4 Remove all dirt, grease and moisture. A thorough wipe with a lean dry rag is usually suffiient. (Moisture will retard ure of the solvent ement; dirt or grease an also prevent adhesion). 4 of 26

5 Handling & Installation Proedures 5 Before solvent welding make sure there is an interferene fit between the pipe and fitting soket. Pipe should be able to be inserted 1/3 to 2/3 the way into the soket before an interferene fit is enountered. If the pipe goes all the way into the soket do not use. Set aside and use another fitting. Contat your pipe and fitting supplier for replaement. 6 1 st Mark 2 nd Mark Measure the fitting soket depth. This distane will then be used to draw a line on the OD of the pipe. Mark this distane (fitting soket depth) on the pipe OD, 1 ST Mark. Cleaner and solvent ement will eventually over the end of the pipe up to this line. Make a 2 nd Mark on the pipe OD. The distane, from the seond mark to the 1 st Mark should be the same as the fitting soket depth. This is used to hek that the pipe is bottomed out (properly inserted) in the fitting soket after solvent welding. 7 It is ritial that the right size appliator be used on the pipe and fitting being solvent welded. The appliator should be 1/2 the size of the pipe diameter (for example; use a 2" appliator on a 4" pipe). The right size appliator will ensure that suffiient quantity of ement is applied to the pipe and fitting soket. Pipe OD Appliator ½ OD 5 of 26

6 Handling & Installation Proedures 8 Using a lean dry rag, or appliator to apply the leaner into fitting soket, keeping the surfae and appliator wet until the surfae has been leaned. When the surfae is leaned, quikly remove any puddles of leaner from the soket. 9 Next, apply the leaner to the end of the pipe. Cleaner should be applied approximately 1/2" beyond the 1 st mark (1/2" beyond the depth of the fitting soket). 10 Using right size of appliator, and while surfaes are still wet, apply the Duraplus industrial ABS solvent ement on the outside of the pipe. NOTE: Do not add primers, leaners or other thinners into the tin of solvent ement. 11 Without delay apply a full, even layer of solvent ement to the pipe-end equal to the depth of the fitting soket (1 st mark) do not brush it out to a thin paint type layer, as this will dry too quikly. 6 of 26

7 Handling & Installation Proedures 12 Immediately apply a medium even layer of solvent ement into the fitting soket; aggressively work the solvent ement into the soket wall without allowing the ement in the soket to puddle. 13 Immediately, apply a seond, full even layer of solvent ement on the pipe wall. NOTE: The majority of joint failures are a result of improper or insuffiient appliation of solvent ement. 14 Without delay, while ement is still wet, insert the pipe into the fitting soket. While inserting the pipe in the fitting soket, twist the pipe 1/8 to 1/4 turn until reahing soket bottom. NOTE: If ement oatings have hardened, ut off pipe end and dispose of fitting and start over. Do not attempt to assemble pipe or fittings with partially ured surfaes. Do not ontinue to rotate after the pipe has reahed the soket bottom. Seurely hold the pipe and fitting assembly together, for a minimum of 30 seonds to eliminate push-out or movement. NOTE: After assembly, a joint should have a lean ring or bead of ement ompletely around the mouth of the fitting soket. Note, if voids (gaps) in this ring are present, suffiient ement was not applied whih an be an indiator of a weak joint. 7 of 26

8 Handling & Installation Proedures 15 Remove exess ement from the pipe and fitting. This an be done using a lean dry rag. Pay speial attention to the ring or bead of solvent ement around the soket entrane, as it will needlessly soften the pipe and fitting, and does not add to joint strength. Exess ement around the soket entrane will also unneessarily extend the ure time of the solvent ement. Avoid disturbing or moving the joint. 16 Measure the distane from the 2 nd mark on the pipe to the mouth of the soket. If the pipe has been fully inserted into the soket, the distane should equal the soket depth previously measured. 17 Exerise are when handling newly assembled joints until initial set has taken plae. Stritly follow set and ure times before handling or hydro-testing the piping system (for joint and ure times refer to page 11). 8 of 26

9 Handling & Installation Proedures Reommended proedure for joining large diameter pipe & fittings (6" diameter and larger) As pipe diameter inreases, so does the diffiulty in installing it. Using the Solvent Welding instrutions listed previously along with the following additional reommendations, the professional installer should be able to suessfully assemble large diameter pipe and fittings. 1 Using the orret size appliator is extremely important to ensure enough ement is applied to fill the larger gap that exists between the pipe and fittings. For example, a 3" applitor is required for 6" joint, a 5" appliator is required for a 10" joint et. 2 End of pipe must be ut square and hamfered (beveled). It is important in large diameter joining that the ement be applied simultaneously to the pipe and fittings. 4 Make sure to apply a seond, full even layer of solvent ement to the pipe. 9 of 26

10 Handling & Installation Proedures 5 IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE PIPE FULLY INSERTED INTO THE FITTING SOCKET (BOTTOMED OUT). Large diameter pipe is heavy and an develop signifiant resistane during insertion into the fitting soket, before reahing soket bottom. It is for this reason that we reommend above 4" diameter the use of a pipe-puller suh as the one pitured. (Available at IPS Corporation). Courtesy of IPS Corporation 6 Large diameter pipe and fittings require longer set and ure times. (In old weather, a heat blanket may be used to speed up the reommended set and ure times). 7 Prefabriate as many joints as possible in a onditioned spae. 8 Never bury empty MEK leaner or solvent ement ans, rags, brushes, appliators, or anything else ontaining wet ement, or leaner, next to the pipe. Joint Curing Time The drying time for joints will vary with the following variables; joint fit (between the pipe and fitting), amount of solvent ement applied, environmental onditions, and required working pressure of the piping system. Although full rated pressure and test pressure should not be applied for 24 hours, joints in smaller systems an sometime be put into servie within hours of being made. Please refer to Joint Cure Shedule on page 11 for omplete table of ure times. 10 of 26

11 Handling & Installation Proedures Cold Weather Although normal installation temperatures are between 40 o F (4 o C) and 110 o F (43 o C), high strength joints have been made at temperatures as low as -15 o F (-26 o C). In old weather, solvents penetrate and soften the plasti pipe and fitting surfaes more slowly than in warm weather. In this situation, the plasti is more resistant to solvent attak and it beomes even more important to pre-soften surfaes with an aggressive primer. Be aware that beause of slower evaporation, a longer ure time is neessary. Tips for solvent ementing in old weather: Ideally, prefabriate as muh of the system as is possible in a heated work area. Short of this, eret a tent around the joints being made to shield from the elements during the joining proess. Always store solvent ement and leaner in a warmer area when not in use and make sure they remain fluid. Take speial are to remove moisture inluding ie and snow from the surfaes to be joined. All surfaes must be lean and dry prior to joining proess. Ensure that the temperature of the pipe and fittings, to be joined, is similar. Use an IPEX MEK to lean the joining surfaes before applying the solvent ement. More than one appliation may be neessary. Allow a longer ure period before the system is used. NOTE: A heat blanket may be used to speed up the set and ure times. An indiation of the time to make a joint and number of joints likely to be made per quart of Duraplus ement is indiated in the table that follows: Hot Weather There are many oasions when solvent ementing plasti pipe at 95 o F (35 o C) temperatures and above annot be avoided. If speial preautions are taken, problems an be avoided. Duraplus ABS Industrial Solvent Cements ontain solvents whih evaporate faster at elevated temperatures. This is espeially true when there is a hot wind blowing. If the pipe is stored in diret sunlight, the pipe surfae temperatures may be 20 o F to 30 o F (10 o C to 15 o C) higher than the ambient air temperature. In this situation, the plasti is less resistant to attak and the solvents will attak faster and deeper, espeially inside a joint. It is therefore very important to avoid puddling the solvent ement inside the fitting soket and to ensure that any exess solvent ement outside the joint is wiped off. Tips for solvent ementing in hot weather: Store solvent ements and primers in a ool or shaded area prior to use. If possible, store fittings and pipe (at least the ends to be solvent welded) in a shady area before ementing. Try to do the solvent ementing in ooler morning hours. Cool surfaes to be joined by wiping with a damp rag. Make sure that the surfae is dry prior to applying solvent ement. Make sure that both surfaes to be joined are still wet with ement when putting them together. With large size pipe, more people on the rew may be neessary. NOTE: During hot weather the expansion-ontration fator may inrease. Refer to the expansion-ontration design riteria in the Duraplus industrial manual. An indiation of the time to make a joint and number of joints likely to be made per quart of Duraplus ement is indiated in the table that follows: Size (in.) 12 Handling & Installation Proedures Branh Connetions Redutions in branh onnetions an be made as follows: Reduer bushings an be solvent welded into tees, from 1/2" through 8". Reduer bushings offer a neat and simple method of reduing soket size in onfined spaes. They are telesopi and may be solvent welded into fittings or into eah other. Care must be taken to properly prepare all jointing surfaes per the solvent welding instrutions. Reduer saddles an be used, from 2" up to 6". Saddles permit branh onnetions to be made without utting the main pipe in two. Follow the fitting proedure below arefully: 1 Carefully, ut a hole into the pipe wall with a hole saw to suit the onnetion. The size of the hole and utter to be used for eah size of saddle is indiated in the table below. These are needed to lamp the saddle into position after the solvent welding proedure. The lamping straps reommended are of the worm-drive type. They should be left on either side of the saddle until the joint has ured. 12 of 26

13 Handling & Installation Proedures 3 Lightly abrade the mating surfaes of the pipe and the saddle with lean medium sand paper or 60-grit emery loth. 4 Clean and abrade the surfaes of the pipe and saddle using Duraplus MEK leaner. Replae the lid on the an one ompleted. 5 Apply Duraplus ement to the pipe area marked and to the saddle, taking are that ement is applied to the inside of the drilled hole and the outside of the spigot loated on the underside of the saddle. Joints require two oats of ement on eah surfae. 13 of 26

14 Handling & Installation Proedures 6 Plae the saddle into position, ensuring that the spigot is loated in the hole against the pipe wall. Clamp the saddle with the straps. 7 Wipe off exess ement. 15 Handling & Installation Proedures Threaded Connetions Plasti-to-Plasti A range of threaded fittings is available with molded NPT threads. These threaded adapters an be emented to pipe or fittings to onvert them from plain end to threaded styles. IPEX reommends the use of molded threaded fittings wherever possible. A speial thik-walled Class T pipe is available for threading in sizes up to 2" when molded fittings annot be used. When Class T pipe is threaded, the pipe must be de-rated to 180 psi at 73 F. Teflon tape should be wound onto male threads for a satisfatory seal. Tightening should only be done by hand or, at most, by an extra quarter turn with a strap wrenh. Extra are must be taken not to over tighten or damage the pipe. Never use a pipe wrenh. Any Duraplus Industrial System inorporating a threaded onnetion is restrited to a maximum of 180 psi pressure at 73 F. CAUTION Anaerobi adhesive thread sealants e.g. Lotite 542, 572, an hemially attak ABS and must not be used. We reommend the use of Teflon tape only. 15 of 26

16 Handling & Installation Proedures Plasti-to-Metal There are several reommended methods of onneting metal and plasti systems. Flanged Joints Composite Unions Flanges Soket/Male Threaded Adapters Spigot/Female Threaded Adapters The inorporation of a metal threaded omposite union into the system means that a threaded plasti omponent need not be used and therefore pressure de-rating is not required. Composite unions are available with brass female threads up to and inluding 1". The Duraplus Industrial range onsists of two types: Full-fae flanges from 1/2" to 6" Stub flanges from 2" to 12" A galvanized mild steel baking ring and the appropriate neoprene gasket must be used with both types of flanges. The full-fae flange has a serrated fae and makes use of a flat drilled gasket. The stub flange has a serrated fae and makes use of a plain, flat, undrilled gasket. Stub-type flanges make bolt hole adjustment very simple. Note: Metal pipes and heat exhangers should be flushed thoroughly if they are to be onneted to Duraplus ABS. This will ensure that if there are any harmful hemials or settlement they will not ontaminate or attak the ABS pipe. Connetions for Instrumentation On 6" diameter pipe and above, small diameter onnetions up to 1/4" NPT an be made by drilling through pipe and fitting where the material is at its thikest and tapping the hole to reeive a threaded fitting. 17 Handling & Installation Proedures Testing Site Pressure Testing The purpose of an onsite pressure test is to establish that the installed setion of the piping system and in partiular all joints and fittings will withstand the design working pressure, plus a safety margin, without loss of pressure or fluid. Generally a test pressure of 1-1/2 times the safe working pressure, but not exeeding the maximum Rated Pressure of the piping system, for the installed pipe is adequate. Whenever possible, it is reommended that hydrostati testing be arried out. It is reommended that the following hydrostati test proedure be followed after the solvent-welded joints have been allowed to ure for a minimum period of 24 hours at 73 F (timed from the last joint). However, please refer to Joint Cure Shedule on page 11 for omplete table of ure times. Hydrostati Test Proedure 1. Fully inspet the installed piping for evidene of mehanial abuse and/or dry, suspet joints. 2. Split the system into onvenient test setions. 3. Slowly fill the pipe setion with old water, taking are to evauate all entrapped air in the proess. Use air release valves at any high points in the system. Do not pressurize at this stage. 4. Leave the setion for at least 1 hour to allow equilibrium temperature to be ahieved. 5. Chek the system for leaks. If lear, hek for and remove any remaining air and inrease pressure up to 50 psi. Do not pressurize further at this stage. 6. Leave the setion pressurized for 10 minutes. If the pressure deays, inspet for leaks. If the pressure remains onstant, slowly inrease the hydrostati pressure to 1-1/2 times the nominal working pressure but not exeeding the maximum Rated Pressure of the piping system. Storage Prolonged Storage in Sunlight Prolonged storage in sunlight may lead to degradation and some loss of impat resistane beause of the ombined effet of heat and ultraviolet radiation. White opaque and well ventilated tarps should be used wherever possible to prevent this from happening. On-site Storage The high-impat strength of the Duraplus Industrial System provides some protetion against damage to plasti pipe often inurred during handling and storage on-site. However, it is reommended the following preautions are taken: 1. The storage site should be flat, level and free from sharp stones, et. 2. Pipes should not be staked to heights exeeding the following: Pipe Size (in.) Up to Max Staking Height 20 x pipe size 12 x pipe size 7 x pipe size 4 x pipe size 4 x pipe size 3. Smaller pipes may be nested inside larger pipes. 4. Side braing should be provided to prevent stak ollapse. 7. Leave the setion pressurized for a period not exeeding 1 hour. During this time, the pressure should not hange. If there is a signifiant drop in stati pressure or extended times are required to ahieve pressure, either joint leakage has ourred or air remains in the line. Inspet for leakage and if none is apparent, redue the pressure and hek for trapped air. This must be removed before further testing. Any joint leaks should be repaired and allowed to ure fully before re-pressurizing for a minimum of 24 hours. However, please refer to Joint Cure Shedule on page 11 for omplete table of ure times. 17 of 26

18 Handling & Installation Proedures CAUTION Freezing Conditions Preautions should be taken to prevent ontents from freezing, as this an ause pipe work to split. Glyol an be added to the system to lower the freezing point. Thermal Insulation Some insulation produts an ontain substanes apable of having a detrimental effet on thermoplasti pipe work (eg. ertain types of foam rubber insulations an ause pipes to fail where the ABS is onveying liquids at temperatures above 86 O F (30 O C.) Common insulation materials known to be suitable with ABS pipe work are: fiber wool, suh as 'Rokwool' Armaflex Class 1 HT Koolphen K Phenoli foam Polystyrene Note: Please ontat our Tehnial Customer Servie if further assistane or reommendations are required. Some adhesives an be detrimental. Do not bond insulation to ABS. (This omment also applies to any tapes, adhesives, or other substanes used to seure the heating tape to the pipe work.) Trae Heating The seletion of heating tapes with silione rubber, woven wire, or woven polyester outer sheaths will eliminate the risk of plastiizer migration. These tapes are therefore preferred for use on thermoplasti systems. Pipe Contents Identifiation Do not put self-adhesive labels diretly on to pipe surfaes as this may be detrimental to pipe performane. It is reommended that some sort of barrier, suh as aluminum foil, is plaed between pipe and identifiation label. Sealants Certain sealants are formulated with phthalates. Phthalates are known to be extremely aggressive toward ABS materials, and therefore onfirmation of the suitability of any masti sealant should be determined before being used in onjuntion with ABS pipe work. Contat with Syntheti Oils Some syntheti oils used for drawing tubes and tube bending in the prodution of equipment suh as fan oils, refrigeration display ases and other metal oiled devies are unsuitable for use with thermoplasti piping systems. The main types of syntheti oils identified as being inompatible with thermoplasti piping systems inlude but are not limited to Esters, Polyalkylene Glyols, and Organi Phosphates. Some metal equipment manufaturers use these oils in their manufaturing proess and normally remove these oils after manufaturing the part. However, IPEX reommends flushing the metal equipment thoroughly before installation with the thermoplasti piping system to ensure that residual oil left in the equipment annot ome into ontat with the ABS. IPEX USA, LLC. reommends flushing the equipment with methylated spirits, however the equipment manufaturer should always be ontated for ompatibility and omplete flushing proedures. It is important to ensure proper drying time after flushing before onneting the equipment to the ABS piping system. Please note that only the metal pipe in the equipment should be flushed, ABS piping should not be flushed with methylated spirits. Contat with Fluxes Some fluxes an be detrimental to ABS. Care should be taken when soldering opper pipe work diretly above, or lose to, ABS pipe work. Pressure Surges Pressure surges should not be allowed to exeed the maximum ontinuous working pressure of the system. Insulation Some insulation produts may be unsuitable for use with Duraplus ABS Industiral piping systems. They may ontain harmful plastiizers whih an migrate into the ABS material. Certain insulation produts are suitable for use with ABS but may need to be installed using adhesives that ontain harmful solvents. It is important to ensure ompatibility of the insulation material as well as installation materials, suh as adhesives, with your IPEX representative. 18 of 26
