5 GRINDING AT THE RIGHT SPEED The key to productivity Die grinding Smll precision deburring die grinding is performed with either tungsten crbide, high speed steel burrs or mounted points. The choice of burr depends on the size of your job. A lrger volume of removed mteril will require bigger size of the burr s hed. Select the tool r/min depending on the dimeter of the burr hed, the mteril to be ground nd the mteril in the rotry burr. Use tungsten crbide burrs for hrd nd tough mterils. High speed steel burs re recommended for unhrdened nd medium hrd mterils. Exmple, see tble below: Similr to rough grinding, rough surfce, ground with corse grit will benefit from high rottionl speed. The limittions re, however, the mximum llowed speed of the bcking pd nd the fibre disc. Norml snding speeds for fibre discs of dimeter 5 mm, 80 mm nd 0 mm re 000 to 6000 r/min. Polishing with different pstes nd compounds require low speed in combintion with high torque. Suitble speeds re 800 to 00 r/min. Snding with wet coted brsives is best performed t low speeds, prtly becuse wter is thrown out into the periphery nd prtly becuse of the fine grit. Scotch-Brite, Ber Tex nd flp wheels perform best t 50% of their mximum llowed rottionl speeds. Rough grinding Pure mteril removl, regrdless of whether it is removed from crmped or n open spce, is determined by the power generted t the grinding process. The pplied feed force nd the rottion of the wheel genertes cutting force which multiplied with the peripherl speed of the wheel represents the power removing mteril, (Power = Peripherl speed x Cutting force). A powerful grinder will provide enough power with lmost mintined rottionl speed, when pplying feed-force. Higher feed-force requires higher effort from the opertor which leds to ftigue. A suitble combintion of opertive rottionl speed, suitble feed-force pplied by the opertor nd the necessry power of the grinder will give you the best combintion for the mteril removl required. As rough grinding is performed with bonded brsives, limittion of rottionl speed is necessry in order to prevent wheel frctures due to centrifugl force. The peripherl speed is limited to 80 m/s for fibre reinforced depressed centre, stright nd cutting off wheels. Resin bonded cup nd stright wheels re limited to peripherl speed of 50 m/s. Snding nd polishing Unlike die nd rough grinding, snding nd polishing pplies to requirements of surfce. A fine surfce will require fine grit pper, fine Scotch-Brite, Ber Tex or soft polishing bonnet. Rougher surfce grinding will require higher mteril removl rte nd thus corser grit pper. The speed governor The mount of mteril removed in the grinding process depends on the power of the tool nd the opertive rottionl speed. The digrm below shows the correltion between torque, power nd rottionl speed of non governed pneumtic grinder. In order to remove mteril, the opertor hs to pply feedforce on the work-piece. Consequently the rottionl speed decreses nd hving pssed pproximtely 50% of the free speed, the opertive power outtke strts to decrese. Theoreticlly, the most mteril would be removed t pproximtely 50% of the free speed on non governed grinder, (digrm ). The Atls Copco grinders re built smll nd smooth, prtly due to their speed governor. The ir is governed to the ir flow necessry to mintin the rottionl speed regrdless of lod, (to the extent of the power of the grinder). HOW TO MAKE IT SAFER Check the free speed The mesured speed t pressure of 6. brs should not exceed the rted speed of the grinder. A tolernce of +0% is cceptble if stted in the documenttion of the tool. The wheel must be removed before the grinder is checked. The checks should be crried out regulrly, especilly fter longer stndstill. Mke sure tht the speed mrking on the tool is redble. 5 Check tht flnge nd wheel combintions correspond to ntionl regultions. Check tht the flnges re undmged nd tht they re clen. Check the wheelgurd Alwys use the recommended wheelgurd nd check tht it is not dmged. Never use grinder without the wheelgurd when the grinding wheel requires one. 6 Wer personl protection goggles er protection gloves (helmet in hevier pplictions) Mtch the mximum speed of the wheel to the right grinder Mke sure tht the stted mximum speed of the grinder never exceeds the mximum speed of the grinding wheel. 7 Test run your grinder in protected re fter hving ssembled the wheel Keep the spce round the grinding opertion free from other people. Check the grinding wheel Mke sure tht the grinding wheel is not crcked or dmged in ny wy. The grinding wheel should hve the correct hole dimensions nd should be fitted properly on the spindle to void unblnced vibrtions. 8 Mintennce Mke sure to follow prescribed service instructions nd intervls. Do not disssemble security prts, e.g. speed governor or overspeed shut-off. These prts hve to be completely replced when dmged.
