6 0403 EXPLANATION & USE OF RATINGS & SERVICE FACTORS Gear unt selecton s made by comparng actual loads wth catalogue ratngs. Catalogue ratngs are based on a standard set of loadng condtons, whereas actual load condtons vary accordng to type of applcaton. Servce Factors are therefore used to calculate an equvalent load to compare wth catalogue ratngs..e. Equvalent Load = Actual Load x Servce Factor echancal ratngs and servce factor Fm echancal ratngs measure capacty n terms of lfe and/or strength, assumng 10 hr/day contnuous runnng under unform load condtons. Catalogue ratngs allow 100% overload at startng, brakng or momentarly durng operaton up to 10 hours per day. The unt selected must therefore have a catalogue ratng at least equal to half maxmum overload. echancal Servce Factor Fm (Table 1) s used to modfy the actual load accordng to daly operatng tme, and type of loadng. Load characterstcs for a wde range of applcatons are detaled n Table 3 opposte, whch are used n decdng the approprate Servce Factor Fm from Table 1. If overloads can be calculated, or accurately assessed, actual loads should be used nstead of Fm. For unts subjected to frequent start/stop overloads n excess of 10 tmes/day multply factor Fm x Factor Fs (table 2). For applcatons where unts are to operate n extremely dusty or most/humd atmospheres unt selecton should be referred to Textron Power Transmsson applcaton engneers. Foot mounted unts are suppled ether as free standng unts, or f requred, mounted on a standard baseplate wth a foot mounted motor correctly algned and connected by a Textron Power Transmsson flexble couplng. a) Clean shaft extensons and ventlator when ftted. b) Secure unt, or baseplate f ftted to a rgd foundaton usng heavy duty bolts to ISO grade 8.8 mnmum. c) Ensure baseplate s not dstorted Note: Unts not suppled on baseplates should f possble be mounted on the same bedplate as the prme mover. d) Algn unt (see pages 23 and 24) Note: It s mportant to ensure when algnng unt on baseplate that all machned mountng ponts are supported over ther full area. If steel packngs are used these should be placed ether sde of the foundaton bolt as close as possble. Durng the fnale boltng ensure the unt or baseplate s not dstorted ths wll cause strans n the gear case resultng n errors of algnment of shafts and gearng. e) For unts mounted on bedplates after algnment select any two dagonally opposte feet, drll ream and dowel n poston. f) Ft guards n accordance wth the factory acts. g) Check motor wrng for correct drecton of rotaton ths s mportant when a backstop devce s ftted. h) Fll gear unt wth ol (f not factory flled) as detaled n Secton REPLACEENT OF OIL SEALS a) Clean and dran the unt. b) Remove any equpment from the outputshaft such as couplngs and remove the output key. c) Remove the old seal d) Smear ol seals wth grease (NLGI Grade 2 grease). e) Ft replacement seal on a seal gude, slde t along the shaft and press the seal nto the housngs. f) Fll wth the correct amount of an approved lubrcant, see Lubrcaton Secton 6. 17

26 SHAFT ALIGNENT 0108 SHAFT ALIGNENT Fgure 1 A B Errors of algnment fall nto categores of angularty (see fgure 1) and eccentrcty (see fgure 2), or a combnaton of both. Fgure 2 A B Errors of angularty should be checked for and corrected before errors of eccentrcty Algnment n accordance wth the followng procedure wll ensure vbraton levels meetng those set out n ISO Part 1. Fgure A B Errors of Angularty If the faces are perfectly true, the angularty can be checked by keepng both shafts statonary and takng measurements wth a block gauge and feelers at the four ponts 1, 2, 3 and 4 as shown n fgure 3. The dfference between the readngs 1 and 3 wll gve the error of algnment n the vertcal plane, over the length of the shaft equal to the dameter of the couplng flanges, and from ths the dfference n the relatve heghts of the feet of the motor or other connected machne can be found by proporton. Smlarly the dfference between the readngs 2 and 4 gves the amount of sdeways adjustment necessary to correct any errors of algnment n the horzontal plane. Generally, however, the couplng faces wll not be absolutely true and whlst any errors so found could be allowed for n checkng angularty by the statonary method an easer method presents tself. Ths conssts n markng the ponts 1 on both "A" and "B" and rotatng both half couplngs, keepng the marked ponts together. By takng measurements each quarter-revoluton the errors n the vertcal and horzontal planes are agan found. The permtted angularty error s as follows Fgure 4 Fgure 5 4 NOTE: Check the algnment after runnng the unt untl t has attaned ts normal workng temperature. Any dscrepances can then be rectfed. 3 TYPE OF COUPLING ALLOWABLE GAP (G) (Inches or mm) Rgd couplng G = D All other types Please see approprate nstallaton and mantenance manual for couplng type ftted NOTE: D s the dameter (Inches or mm) at whch the gap s measured. 23

27 SHAFT ALIGNENT 0311 Errors of Eccentrcty The procedure for measurng eccentrcty s precsely analogous to that used for angularty. In ths case, however, the measurements are taken n a radal drecton and the most convenent and accurate means of dong ths utlses a dal ndcator sutably clamped to one half couplng, and bearng on the hub or flange of the other, as shown n fgures 4 and 5 on page 23. Care must, however, be taken to ensure the support for the dal ndcator s suffcently rgd to prevent the weght of the ndcator from causng deflecton and, n consequence, naccurate readngs. Extra care should be taken where taper roller bearngs are ftted to ensure that algnment s checked wth shafts n md-pont poston and a fnal check made wth the unt at operatng temperature. The permtted eccentrcty error whch can be accommodated n addton to that of the angularty error s as follows :- TYPE OF COUPLING UNIT SIZE ALLOWABLE ECCENTRICITY (nches) Rgd 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 & 08 09, 10, 13 & All other types Please see approprate nstallaton and mantenance manual for couplng type ftted SPECIAL NOTE CONCERNING RIGID COUPLINGS In lnng up elements nvolvng rgd couplngs t s mportant that no attempt s made to correct errors of algnment or eccentrcty greater than those above by tghtenng of the couplng bolts (Ths apples when the system s cold or at operatng temperature). The result s ms-algnment and the settng up of undue stresses n the shaft, couplng and bearngs. Ths wll be revealed by the sprngng apart of the couplng faces f the bolts are slackened off. A check on the angularty of a pre-assembled job, after boltng down, can be obtaned n the case of rgd couplngs by slackenng off the couplng bolts, when any ms-algnment wll cause the couplng faces to sprng apart. Ths check may not, however, reveal any strans due to eccentrcty owng to the constant restrant mposed by the spgot. SERIES X COUPLINGS Textron Power Transmsson produces standard flexble couplngs to cover the complete range of Textron unts, please contact Textron Power Transmsson for detals. 24
