7 Gear unt selecton s made by comparng actual loads wth catalogue ratngs. Catalogue ratngs are based on a standard set of loadng condtons, whereas actual load condtons vary accordng to type of applcaton. Servce Factors are therefore used to calculate an equvalent load to compare wth catalogue ratngs..e. Equvalent Load = Actual Load x Servce Factor echancal ratngs and servce factor Fm echancal ratngs measure capacty n terms of lfe and/or strength, assumng 10 hr/day contnuous runnng under unform load condtons. Catalogue ratngs allow 100% overload at startng, brakng or momentarly durng operaton up to 10 hours per day. The unt selected must therefore have a catalogue ratng at least equal to half maxmum overload. echancal Servce Factor Fm (Table 1) s used to modfy the actual load accordng to daly operatng tme, and type of loadng. Load characterstcs for a wde range of applcatons are detaled n Table 3 opposte, whch are used n decdng the approprate Servce Factor Fm from Table 1. If overloads can be calculated, or accurately assessed, actual loads should be used nstead of Fm. 57 OVERNG & AXIAL LOADS (NEWTONS) ON SAFTS axmum permssble overhung loads When a sprocket, gear etc. s mounted on the shaft a calculaton, as below, must be made to determne the overhung load on the shaft, and the results compared to the maxmum permssble overhung loads tabulated. Overhung loads can be reduced by ncreasng the dameter of the sprocket, gear, etc. If the maxmum permssble overhung load s exceeded, the sprocket, gear, etc. should be mounted on a separate shaft, flexbly coupled and supported n ts own bearngs, or the gear unt shaft should be extended to run n an outboard bearng. Alternatvely, a larger gear s often a less expensve soluton. Permssble overhung loads vary accordng to the drecton of rotaton. The values tabulated are for the most unfavourable drecton wth the unt transmttng full rated power and the load P appled mdway along the shaft extenson. ence they can sometmes be ncreased for a more favourable drecton of rotaton, or f the power transmtted s less than the rated capacty of the gear unt, or f the load s appled nearer to the gear unt case. It s therefore dangerous to use naked lghts n the proxmty of gearbox openngs, due to the rsk of fre or exploson. (b) In the event of fre or serous overheatng (over 300 o C), certan materals (rubber, plastcs, etc.) may decompose and produce fumes. Care should be taken to avod exposure to the fumes, and the remans of burned or overheated plastc/rubber materals should be handled wth rubber gloves. 2) Guards - Rotatng shafts and couplngs must be guarded to elmnate the possblty of physcal contact or entanglement of clothng. It should be of rgd constructon and frmly secured. 3) Nose - gh speed gearboxes and gearbox drven machnery may produce nose levels whch are damagng to the hearng wth prolonged exposure. Ear defenders should be provded for personnel n these crcumstances. Reference should be made to the Department of Employment Code of Practce for reducng exposure of employed persons to nose. 4) Lftng - Where provded (on larger unts) only the lftng ponts or eyebolts must be used for lftng operatons (see mantenance manual or general arrangement drawng for lftng pont postons). Falure to use the lftng ponts provded may result n personal njury and/or damage to the product or surroundng equpment. Keep clear of rased equpment. 5) Lubrcants and Lubrcaton (a) Prolonged contact wth lubrcants can be detrmental to the skn. The manufacturer's nstructon must be followed when handlng lubrcants. (b) The lubrcaton status of the equpment must be checked before commssonng. Read and carry out all nstructons on the lubrcant plate and n the nstallaton and mantenance lterature. eed all warnng tags. Falure to do so could result n mechancal damage and n extreme cases rsk of njury to personnel. 6) Electrcal Equpment - Observe hazard warnngs on electrcal equpment and solate power before workng on the gearbox or assocated equpment, n order to prevent the machnery beng started. 7) Installaton, antenance and Storage (a) In the event that equpment s to be held n storage, for a perod exceedng 6 months, pror to nstallaton or commssonng, applcaton engneerng must be consulted regardng specal preservaton requrements. nless otherwse agreed, equpment must be stored n a buldng protected from extremes of temperature and humdty to prevent deteroraton. The rotatng components (gears and shafts) must be turned a few revolutons once a month (to prevent bearngs brnellng). (b) External gearbox components may be suppled wth preservatve materals appled, n the form of a "waxed" tape overwrap or wax flm preservatve. Gloves should be worn when removng these materals. The former can be removed manually, the latter usng whte sprt as a solvent. Preservatves appled to the nternal parts of the gear unts do not requre removal pror to operaton. (c) Installaton must be performed n accordance wth the manufacturer's nstructons and be undertaken by sutably qualfed personnel. (d) Before workng on a gearbox or assocated equpment, ensure that the load has been removed from the system to elmnate the possblty of any movement of the machnery and solate power supply. Where necessary, provde mechancal means to ensure the machnery cannot move or rotate. Ensure removal of such devces after work s complete. (e) Ensure the proper mantenance of gearboxes n operaton. se only the correct tools and approved spare parts for repar and mantenance. Consult the antenance anual before dsmantlng or performng mantenance work. 8) ot Surfaces and Lubrcants (a) Durng operaton, gear unts may become suffcently hot to cause skn burns. Care must be taken to avod accdental contact. (b) After extended runnng the lubrcant n gear unts and lubrcaton systems may reach temperatures suffcent to cause burns. Allow equpment to cool before servcng or performng adjustments. 9) Selecton and Desgn (a) Where gear unts provde a backstop faclty, ensure that back-up systems are provded f falure of the backstop devce would endanger personnel or result n damage. (b) The drvng and drven equpment must be correctly selected to ensure that the complete machnery nstallaton wll perform satsfactorly, avodng system crtcal speeds, system torsonal vbraton, etc. (c) The equpment must not be operated n an envronment or at speeds, powers, torques or wth external loads beyond those for whch t was desgned. (d) As mprovements n desgn are beng made contnually the contents of ths catalogue are not to be regarded as bndng n detal, and drawngs and capactes are subject to alteratons wthout notce. The above gudance s based on the current state of knowledge and our best assessment of the potental hazards n the operaton of the gear unts.
