4 GENERAL Introducton Ths servce manual s part of the nstructons and contans the techncal nformaton for servcng, confgurng and reparng a küschall wheelchar. WARNING! Danger of accdent and severe njures. If the wheelchar s mproperly set t can cause accdents and severe njures. Changes to the wheelchar may only be carred out by the provder. To mantan the necessary levels of safety and relablty, every wheelchar must be thoroughly examned once a year. Some aspects of the assembly and confguraton of the wheelchar requre a hgh level of expertse. These assembly nstructons therefore break the varous tasks down nto categores: Requrement Easy techncal understandng requred Medum techncal knowledge requred Symbol Dffcult techncal knowledge and expertse n assemblng wheelchars requred The requred tools and ther respectve szes are lsted above each nstructon. The nstructons nclude nformaton on the torques wth whch the respectve screw connectons must be tghtened. Adherng to the gven torques requres the use of a torque spanner. Fastenng wth hexagon socket bolts Hexagon socket bolts are not desgned to wthstand an excessve applcaton of force. When tghtenng or undong a hexagon socket bolt, force must be appled to the nut wherever possble to avod damagng the bolt. 4

5 Tghtenng and undong Turn the nut usng an open-end spanner, or preferably a socket spanner, usng the Allen key smply to stop the bolt turnng. Tghtenng and undong when no nut s present If an Allen screw s drectly screwed nto a screw thread, the screw must be tghtened usng an Allen key. Torque Ensure that the Allen key s of good qualty and not worn. All screw connectons must be tghtened wth the torques specfed n the followng nstructons. Checks Vsual check Prüfen Se alle Komponenten auf Rsse, nsbesondere de Bereche um Verbndungen und Schweßnähte herum. Checkng the screw connectons Check all bolts wth the torques specfed n the nstructons regularly, and adjust f requred. CAUTION! Mehrere Schraubverbndungen wurden mt Schraubenscherungslack geschert. Sollten dese Schraubverbndungen geöffnet werden, müssen se weder mt neuem Schraubenscherungslack geschert werden. Zur Verfügung stehen hochfeste und nederfeste Scherungsmassen n flüssger Form. Be den Drehmomentangaben wrd ggf. darauf hngewesen, ob en Scherungskleber zu verwenden st, bzw. welcher zu verwenden st. 6 FRAME FRAME Adjustng the frame The seat wdth, seat depth, lower leg length and tppng pont are determned by the desgn of the frame and cannot be changed retrospectvely. A modfcaton of the tp behavour can only be acheved by orderng a new, one-off backrest. The seat depth can be adjusted by changng the hole poston. Changng the frame Please contact the Invacare Customer Servce department f you wsh to change the frame. 6

7 SEAT SEAT Adjustng the seat heght The seat heght can only be adjusted by fttng a larger or smaller rear wheel and at the same tme usng a larger or smaller front wheel fork. Possble front seat heghts: SHv [mm] (50*) * From seral number G As the seat angle s dctated by the desgn of the frame, the seat heght rear (SHh) also changes by 0 mm. The followng settngs are possble: A B C D E 5'' 4'' '' 4'' 5'' To ensure that the frame s straght and the axles of the front wheel forks are perpendcular to the ground, choose one of the combnatons lsted n the table. Remove seat cover and replace wth new one. Owng to the tenson nherent n the desgn of the frame, t may not be possble to ft the seat cover. In ths case the axle holders must be undone. 0 Undo axle holders 0 Ft new seat cover usng bolts. 0 Ensure the rear wheels are parallel, Chap. Rear Wheels, Ensurng the rear wheels are parallel, and tghten axle holder bolts. 0 Ft mudguard or clothes guard usng bolts. à 4 Nm 7

8 BACKREST BACKREST Adjustng the backrest heght Readjustng the push handle/telescopc tube Dffculty: Tools: Ã 8 Remove the backrest paddng. Remove the screw connecton and adjust the desred heght of the push handle or the telescopc tube. Insert the screw connecton agan and tghten the nut. Carry out the same settng on both sdes. Reft the backrest paddng. If the desred heght cannot be acheved, you must use a dfferent telescopc tube or push handle. If the backrest heght s too hgh, the backrest tube can be cut off and redrlled. Possble backrest heghts: RH [mm] From seral number G : Readjustng the push handle/telescopc tube Dffculty: Remove the backrest paddng. Tools: Ã Remove the bolt and adjust the desred heght of the push handle or the telescopc tube by brngng the threaded nsert to the approprate poston. Insert and tghten the bolt agan Carry out the same settng on both sdes. Reft the backrest paddng. If the desred heght cannot be acheved, you must use a dfferent telescopc tube or push handle. Possble backrest heghts: RH [mm] Backrest angle If you want to change the backrest angle, then the complete backrest wll have to be replaced. Possble backrest angles: RW Changng the backrest angle also modfes the tppng pont of the wheelchar. Tppng pont of the wheelchar The tppng pont of the wheelchar can only be modfed by fttng a new backrest wth a larger or smaller backrest angle. The seat depth can also be adjusted by changng the hole poston. 8

9 BACKREST Replacng the Standard Lght backrest cover Dffculty: Tools: Ã 8 Ò Remove push handles, f ftted, Chap. Back, Replacng push handles. Remove bolts and, clothes guard or mudguard. Open the hook and loop fastener on both sdes. Pull the backrest cover up and off and slp the new backrest cover over the backrest tubes. Close the hook and loop fasteners agan on both sdes. Ft mudguard or clothes guard. Ft push handles, f requred. Replacng hook and loop tapes for adjustable backrests Dffculty: Tools: Ã, 4, 5 8, 0 Ò The upper backrest bands can be taken straght off, the backrest must be removed n order to access the lower ones. 0 Remove backrest cover. Remove mudguard or clothes guard. 0 Push the backrest band down n order to access the bolts. 0 Remove nuts and bolts on both sdes (From seral number G : Remove bolts on both sdes). 5 0 Pull the push handle and end band out of the backrest tube (f ftted). Pull the upper backrest band off the backrest tube. 0 Remove bolts on both sdes. 0 Remove the seat cover, the bolts on both sdes and the backrest Replace the lower backrest band and put the backrest to one sde. 6 Owng to the tenson nherent n the desgn of the frame, t may be extremely dffcult to reposton the backrest n the frame. In ths case the axle holders must also be undone. 0 Undo axle holders 0 Insert the new backrest and secure usng bolts. 0 Ft the seat cover, nsert and tghten bolts. 0 Ensure the rear wheels are parallel, Chap. Rear wheels, Ensurng the rear wheels are parallel, and tghten axle holder bolts. 0 Pull the upper backrest band over the backrest tube. 0 Reft the push handles and end band and secure usng bolts and nuts on both sdes (From seral number G : secure usng bolts on both sdes). 0 Ft mudguard or clothes guard. à 4 Nm 9

10 BACKREST Replacng push handles wth Lght cover Dffculty: Tools: Ã, 4 Ò 8 0 Remove screw on both sdes. 0 Push the cover down a lttle to expose the bolt connectons. 0 Remove bolt connectons on both sdes. 0 If necessary, remove mudguard or clothes guard. 0 Pull out push handle and replace wth new one. 0 Insert and tghten bolt connectons on both sdes. 0 Ft cover to both push handles usng screw. If a push handle s not gong to be ftted, telescopc tubes wth a new Lght cover that s sealed at the top can be used. From seral number G : Replacng push handles wth Lght cover à 4 Nm Dffculty: Tools: Ã, 4 Ò 0 Remove screw on both sdes. 0 Push the cover down a lttle to expose the bolt. 0 Remove bolts from the backrest tube on both sdes. 0 If necessary, remove mudguard or clothes guard. 0 Pull out push handle and replace wth new one. 0 Insert bolt through the backrest tubes and the new push handles and tghten bolts on both sdes. 0 Ft cover to both push handles usng screws. If a push handle s not gong to be ftted, telescopc tubes wth a new Lght cover that s sealed at the top can be used. Replacng push handles wth adjustable backrest à 4 Nm Dffculty: Tools: Ã, 4 8 Ò 0 Remove backrest cover. 0 Remove bolts and end band. 0 Push the backrest band down a lttle to expose the bolt. 0 Remove bolt on both sdes. 0 Pull the push handles from the backrest tubes. 0 Slp the end band over the new push handles. 5 6 à 4 Nm 0 Ft the push handles n the desred poston usng the bolts. Secure the end band to the push handles agan usng the bolts. 4 0

11 BACKREST Replacng foldable push handles Dffculty: Tools: Hole punch plers 6 mm, Ã, 4 0 Remove the old foldable push handle. 0 Pull down the backrest cover F on the telescopc tube, untl ts hole B s uncovered. IMPORTANT! Make sure that the threaded nsert E (part no ) suppled wth the new push handle s used for assembly. 0 Place the threaded nsert E n the telescopc tube. 0 Punch a hole through the backrest cover wth a dstance of 0 mm from the upper egde, usng hole punch plers (see graphc below). 0 Slde the new foldable push handle A onto the telescopc tube. 0 Pull up the backrest cover, untl t covers completely the rear hole n the pushhandle. 0 Fx the foldable push handle wth screw C and washer G. 0 Check screws D on both sdes of the push handle and re-tghten f necessary. Carry out the same steps for the other push handle. IMPORTANT! Make sure that the foldng force s approxmately 5 N (0.5 kg). C à 7 Nm (low-strength) 0 mm IMPORTANT! Fxng screw C may only be used once. Alternatvely the screw can be cleaned (remove old thread lockng adhesve) and renstalled wth new low-strength thread lockng adhesve. The retroft of foldable push handles requres new tubng.

12 BACKREST Foldable backrest, angle adjustable (optonal) Optonally, a foldable, angle-adjustable backrest can be ftted. For assemblng a specal Invacare tranng s necessary. When swtchng to the foldable backrest, the axle of the rear wheels must also be replaced wth a new one that s cm wder, Chap. Rear wheels, Replacng the axle. Pre-assemblng the foldable backrest Dffculty: Tools: Ã, 4, 5 8, 0 Push the back band onto the back tubes. Ft the end plugs nto the backrest tubes on both sdes. Mount the backrest jont plates on both backrest tubes. Ft the backrest angle adjustor through the back band on both backrest tubes facng forwards or backwards, Chap. Back, Backrest angle. 4 à 9 Nm à 4 Nm Fttng a foldable, angle-adjustable backrest Dffculty: Tools: Ã, 4, 5 8, 0 drll, drll bt: ø6. 4 Remove mudguard or clothes guard from both sdes. Remove the seat cover. Remove old backrest. Drll a new hole n the frame, on both sdes, wth ø 6. mm bt, at a dstance of 0 mm from the rearmost hole. 6 Re-ft the seat cover. Push the seat tube nto the frame on both sdes and secure wth bolt. Ft end plugs nto end of both seat tubes. Push the pre-assembled backrest onto seat tubes and secure on both sdes wth bolt à 9 Nm à 9 Nm à 9 Nm à 9 Nm Secure support plate usng bolt through the seat cover. 9 Secure support plate usng bolt (spacer, plastc washer, washer f requred, bolt) and plastc washer n the requred adjustor poston, Chap. Back, Backrest angle. On both support plates, pull the strap through hole a and make a knot at both ends. Poston the mudguard or clothes-guard on the support plate and drll at poston b. Screw the mudguard or clothes-guard onto the support plate (7 Nm). 7 0 Backrest angle The backrest angle adjustor can be ftted facng forwards or facng backwards: Ftted facng forwards for backrest angles 8, 86 and 90. Ftted facng backwards for backrest angles 74 and 78.

13 SIDES FOOTRESTS Three types of footrest are avalable: A footrest made from alumnum or ttanum and a footrest wth an adjustable footplate. The ttanum footrest requres a dfferent sleeve n order to secure t n the frame. Replacng the footrest Dffculty: Tools: Ã Remove bolts on both sdes. 0 Pull out footrest and replace wth new one. 0 Insert the bolts through the frame and nto the nearest holes at the same heght on both sdes and tghten them. / 4 Nm for ttanum footrest Adjustng the heght of the footrest Dffculty: Tools: Ã 4 8 The footrest can be adjusted n 0 mm steps. 0 Remove bolts on both sdes. 0 Move the footrest to the requred heght. 0 Insert the bolts through the frame and nto the nearest holes at the same heght on both sdes and tghten them. / 4 Nm for ttanum footrest Adjustng the angle of the footrest Dffculty: Tools: Ã 0 For opton angle adjustable only. 0 Undo the four bolts so that the footplate can be moved. 0 Move the footplate to the requred angle and tghten the bolted connectons agan. The bolts must be tghtened very securely to prevent the footplate from movng. à Nm

14 FRONT WHEELS SIDES Fttng the clothes guard Dffculty: Tools: Ã 5, 8, drll, drll bt: ø5, The clothes guard s customsed to ft the geometry of the ndvdual wheelchar. It must therefore only be replaced by another clothes guard of the same sze. Remove bolts and and the old clothes guard. Use the old clothes guard as a template by placng t on the new one and markng the poston of the holes. Drll holes n the new clothes guard. Ft clothes guard usng bolts and. Fttng the mudguard Dffculty: Tools: Ã 5, 8, drll, drll bt: ø5, The mudguard s customsed to ft the geometry of the ndvdual wheelchar. It must therefore only be replaced by another mudguard of the same sze. Remove bolts and and the old mudguard. Use the old mudguard from the other sde as a template by placng t on the new one and markng the poston of the holes. Drll holes n the new mudguard. Ft mudguard usng bolts and. 4

15 REAR WHEELS FRONT WHEELS Replacng the front wheel fork Dffculty: Tools: 0 Remove the sealng cap. Do ths by nsertng two screwdrvers nto the notches and carefully prsng the sealng cap out. Remove nut and washer. Remove the front wheel fork. Check bearngs and renew f necessary. CAUTION! Overtghtenng of the nuts may cause damage to the bearngs. Insert the new castor fork and secure t usng the washer and nut. Ft the sealng cap Functon check: Tp the wheelchar backwards by 90 so that t s lyng on the backrest and the rear wheels. Make sure that the clevs pn s as horzontal as possble. Turn the fork upwards (poston A) and let t tp downwards. The fork has been correctly adjusted f t easly turns to slghtly beyond the bottommost pont (poston B) and then maxmally turns back to the bottommost pont (poston C). If the fork turns back over the bottommost pont or even swngs back and forth, t has not been suffcently tghtened. There s a rsk that the front wheels wll start to wobble at hgh speeds. A B C Replacng the front wheel Dffculty: Tools: Ã x Remove bolts, pull out wheel axle. Remove the front wheel and replace wth a new one or move to a new poston. Two extra sleeves per wheel are ftted for some front wheels. Replace the axle and tghten bolt. Functonal check There must be no play n the wheel but t must turn easly. 4 4 à 4 Nm Cleanng the front wheel bearngs 0 Check that the front wheels turn freely. 0 Remove any drt or har from the front wheel bearngs. 5

16 REAR WHEELS REAR WHEELS Checkng the tyre pressure Tyre Max. pressure Low-resstance tyre 7 bar 700 kpa 0 ps Treaded tyre (marathon) 7.5 bar 750 kpa 08 ps Slck tyres (speed run) 0 bar 000 kpa 45 ps Mountan bke tyre 4 bar 400 kpa 58 ps Tubed tyre, carbon wheel 4 bar 400 kpa 0 ps 0 Measure the tyre pressure. 0 Inflate the tyres to the requred pressure. 0 Check the tyre tread. Change the tyres f necessary. The ar pressure n tubed tyres on carbon wheels must be not less than 0 bar n order to prevent damage to the carbon rm. Checkng the spoke tenson The spokes may not be loose or dstorted. 0 Tghten any loose spokes wth a sutable spoke spanner. 0 Replace broken or dstorted spokes and check that the wheel s runnng true. Checkng that removable axles are seated correctly 0 To check that a removable axle s seated correctly, grasp the rear wheel by the hub and try to pull t off. You should not be able to pull t off and t must only exhbt a very small amount of play. 0 If the rear wheels are not engaged properly, remove any drt or deposts. If the problem perssts, adjust the removable axles. Adjustng the removable axles Dffculty: Tools:, 9 Remove the rear wheel. Hold the end of the removable axle usng the straddle spanner. Adjust the length L of the removable axle by turnng the nut. The length s correctly adjusted f the removable axle engages correctly when fxng the wheel and wheel has just mnmal clearance. The wheels must be exchanged (left to rght sde and vce versa) after adjustng both removable axles. The adjustment must now be checked or carred out agan to ensure the wheels can be swtched. Replacng the rear wheels Dffculty: Proceed as follows f the rear wheels are replaced by ones of a dfferent sze or wth other tyres: 0 Check functon of the parkng brakes. 0 Adjust seat heght, Chap. Seat, Adjustng the seat heght. 0 Check that the mudguard or clothes guard s postoned correctly. 6

17 REAR WHEELS Replacng the axle Dffculty: Tools: Ã 5 Remove the wheels and unscrew bolts on both axle clamp components. Remove both axle clamp components and the axle. Insert new axle, re-attach the axle clamp components and bolts. Tghten the bolts only slghtly. Ensure the wheels are parallel, Chap. Rear wheels, Ensurng the rear wheels are parallel. Ensurng the rear wheels are parallel Dffculty: Tools: Ã 5 The wheelchar wll have deal straght-lne stablty when the rear wheels are exactly parallel to one another. Place the wheelchar on a flat, even surface. Undo the bolts on the two axle clamp components. At the level of the axle, measure the dstance between the wheels at the front (y) and back (x): The dstance at the front (y) must be precsely the same or up to mm greater than the dstance at the back (x). Ths dfference evens tself out when someone sts n the wheelchar. Once the wheels are algned tghten bolts. Check that the wheels are parallel once agan. 0 Check that the parkng brakes are postoned and adjusted correctly. Reparng or changng an nner tube Dffculty: Tool: tyre lever 0 Remove the rear wheel and release any ar from the nner tube. 0 Lft one tyre wall away from the rm usng a bcycle tyre lever. Do not use sharp objects such as a screwdrver whch could damage the nner tube. 0 Pull the nner tube out of the tyre 0 Repar the nner tube usng a bcycle repar kt or, f necessary, replace the tube. 0 Inflate the tube slghtly untl t becomes round. 0 Insert the valve nto the valve hole on the rm and place the tube nsde the tyre (the tube must le rght round the tyre wth no creases). 0 Startng close to the valve, push the tyre wall over the edge of the rm usng both hands. When dong ths, check all the way round to ensure that the nner tube s not trapped between the tyre and the rm. 0 Inflate the tube to ts maxmum operatng pressure, Table, chap. Rear wheels, Checkng the tyre pressure. Check that no ar s escapng from the tyre. Reparng or changng a sold tre Sold tres must be ftted by a qualfed techncan. à 9 Nm 7

18 REAR WHEELS BRAKES Parkng brakes Mountng the parkng brake Dffculty: Tools: Ã 5 Poston the brake holder B around the front frame tube C. Place the brake D n the brake holder. Screw the bolt A wth washer nto the brake assembly but do not tghten. Rotate the brake holder assembly around the frame tube to adjust the lateral dstance of the brake. Rotate the brake n the brake holder to acheve a horzontal poston of the brake rod E to the tre. Fully apply the brake and slde t towards the tre untl the brake rod bears flush aganst the tre. Release the brake and slde t mm backwards and tghten the bolt. A E C B A D Adjustng the parkng brake Dffculty: Tools: Ã 5 A à Nm WARNING! The parkng brakes must be readjusted whenever the rear wheels are replaced or the wheel camber s changed. The parkng brake functon s only guaranteed f the tre has the correspondng ar pressure. Check the tre pressure n the rear wheels and correct f necessary. Slghtly loosen bolt A of the brake holder. Change the poston of the brake assembly as descrbed above. Tghten the bolt. IMPORTANT! The force to apply the brake must be 60 N (maxmum). Very lttle force s requred for actvatng and deactvatng the brake. If necessary, a brake lever extenson can be mounted. Vsual check Check that the parkng brakes are postoned correctly. The brake s set correctly f the brake rod depresses the tre by no more than 4 mm when the brake s appled. (In the case of push/pull and standard brakes ths wll be the case when the brake shoe s approx. 5 mm away from the tre when released.) Functon check Place a weghted wheelchar wth parkng brake engaged facng uphll and then facng downhll on a ramp wth an nclne of 7. The wheelchar must not move. 8

19 BRAKES OPTIONS & ACCESSORIES Fttng an anttpper Dffculty: Tools: Ã 5 Undo bolt and remove the lower part of the axle holder. Secure the adapter bracket wth a bolt and apply a lowstrength adhesve (e.g. Loctte 4). 0 Ft anttpper to adapter bracket. Tghten bolts. Settng the heght 0 Push n adjustng knob and pull the anttpper tube to the requred poston.
