MS9001E A New 100 MW Gas Turbine A new 100 MW gas turbine has been designed fr electric pwer generatin fr either simple cycle r cmbined cycle applicatins. This paper describes the basis fr design, new design features, perfrmance, and test prgram. INTRODUCTION Directed tward wrld-wide 50 Hz utilities, the MS9001E is the latest and largest gas turbine designed and develped by the General Electric Cmpany. Majr bjectives f this design prgram, utilizing the same majr frame size dimensins frm an earlier design, were: Imprved efficiency High pwer utput Operatin with heavy fuels High reliability Base lad perfrmance with #2 distillate il fuel and simple cycle peratin is MW with a heat rate f 10,900 BTU/KW-HR at an intrductry firing temperature f 1955F (1068C). The turbine's gas path design is 120% scale f the successful MS7001E while the remainder f the machine utilizes the latest cmpnents and systems design f prven reliability frm predecessr machines. A mdified cmbustin system cnfiguratin, intrduced n the earlier MS6001A, is a majr change frm bth the MS7001E and MS9001B. Mst utility applicatins fr this turbine are expected t be cmbined cycle plants with efficiencies f 43%. The first unit, shipped t Germany in August, 1980, is a cmbined cycle unit utilizing exhaust recvery fr repwering existing steam turbines. It will be part f a system supplied by AEG t the Electrizitaetwerk Minden Ravensberg GmbH Utility, including an AEG-Telefunken generatr which als prvides the starting functin. The unit will prvide peaking service utilizing gas fuel with #2 distillate hack-up capability. Cmmercial peratin is set fr December, Units #2 and 113 are part f a repwering statin fr the Electricity Supply 2 Bard in Dublin, Ireland, with Alsthm-Atlantique prviding the generatr and statin design. These units are designed t perate n either prpane gas, #2 distillate il, r residual il. Shipment is scheduled fr May, 1981, with Octber, 1982, cmmercial peratin. PERFORMANCE Since the flw path f the MS9001E is a direct scale f the MS7001E, the MS9001E perfrmance can be predicted based n the measured MS7001 perfrmance. Fr gemetrically similar gas turbines, the airflw is prprtinal t the cmpressr inlet annuy area. Thus, the MS9001E air flw is 144% (1.200 ) f the MS7001E flw. Since the shaft utput is prprtinal t airflw, the MS9001E utput is designed t prduce 144% f the MS7001E utput. The MS7001E has a base lad rating f 73.2 MW at 1985F (1085C) turbine-inlet temperature. Accrdingly, the MS9001E will have a future base rating f MW. 2 base lad rating f MW. Operatin at the MS7001E firing temperature f 1985F (1085C) will take place after field tests f the first three units. Estimates fr the final peak package pwer plant rating at 2085F (1141C) is 115 MW. Table I cmpares the simple cycle, base lad ratings f the three majr General Electric single-shaft gas turbines used as a design reference with the MS9001E. INTRODUCTORY RATING DESIGN BASIS Evlutin f the MS9001E design stems frm three recent General Electric designs: MS7001E, MS6001A, and MS9001B (see Figure 1) plus sme additinal features recently develped. 100 s s BASE LOAD OUTPUT-MW 50 and still be shippable in factry assembled mdules like the MS5001M. The result was a new gas turbine mdel, with a 17-stage cmpressr and a 3-stage turbine, perating at 3600 RPM. Subsequent t the design f the MS7001A, a series f design mdificatins was initiated t increase utput and further imprve thermal efficiency. These imprvements were made ver several mdel changes and ver the years 1970 thrugh 1978 as shwn in Figure 1. The initial mdificatins invlved the additin f an air cled first stage bucket and an increase f 190F (105.6C) in turbine inlet temperature. These changes characterized the MS7001B. The MS7001C included an increase in cmpresssr air flw, a cled secnd stage nzzle, and a cled secnd stage bucket. The MS7001E develpment cncentrated n imprving the simple cycle gas turbine efficiency and the cmbined cycle efficiency. This was achieved primarily by increasing the cycle pressure rati and making turbine nzzle and bucket changes that permitted anther increase in turbine inlet temperature. One f the imprtant techniques used in the design f the MS9001E is the "principle f scaling" as applied t turbmachinery and by which existing designs may be increased r reduced in size with a predictable effect n perfrmance. When designs are scaled, in additin t predicting shaft utput and thermal efficiency, it is pssible t predict cmpnent dynamics such as vibratin and thermal/ mechanical stresses. By maintaining all peripheral velcities n the rtr the same, the scale factr becmes the rati f the shaft speeds. 3 Table II summarizes the main activities cmpleted and thse remaining t supprt a cmplete engineering evaluatin f the design capabilities f the MS9001E. The perid between initiatin f design thrugh factry test was accmplished in 2.5 years. Cmpletin f the remaining tests are a functin f field site availability currently scheduled by the custmer utilities. MS9001E GAS TURBINE - DESCRIPTION Air enters the 17-stage, axial-flw cmpressr (Figure 2) and is discharged at abut 11 atmspheres int the plenum at the center f the unit. The air then flws int the annular space arund each f the 14 cmbustin liners and thrugh cling and dilutin hles in the liner int the cmbustin zne. Gas path design is primarily a scale up f the MS7001E with a shrter length cmbustin system arrangement. This arrangement is similar t the MS6001A in that the dwnstream end f the individual cmbustrs are slanted inward t the machine axis at a 13 angle. Each cmbustin chamber discharges int a transitin duct which cnveys the ht cmbustin prducts frm the liner t a sectr f the turbine inlet. The ht gas expands frm the 11 atmsphere pressure levels t atmspheric pressure thrugh a 3-stage, axialflw turbine and exhausts thrugh the annular diffuser and exit-turning vanes t the exhaust stack. The cmpressr rtr cnstructin has individual rtr discs (wheels) fr each stage. Fllwing the standard General Electric design in use n all heavy-duty gas turbines, sixteen thrugh-blts clamp the rtr discs between the frward stubshaft and the seventeenth stage wheel. The first stage rtr blades are munted n the wheel prtin f the frward stubshaft. The seventeenth stage rtr blades are munted n the wheel prtin f the aft stubshaft. The aft stubshaft als serves as a flw passage fr the turbine cling air which is extracted frm the cmpressr between the sixteenth and seventeenth stage wheels. The aft stubshaft is used as a jurnal fr balancing the cmpressr rtr during manufacture. The turbine rtr is f thrugh-blted cnstructin, cnsisting f the frward wheel shaft, the first stage wheel, first t secnd stage spacer, secnd stage wheel, secnd t third stage spacer, third stage wheel, and the aft wheelshaft. After the turbine rtr has been assembled and dynamically balanced, it is mated t the cmpressr rtr by the blted flange cnnectin n the seventeenth stage wheel. The entire rtr assembly is then ready fr installatin in the turbine. Figure 3 shws the MS9001E cmpressr rtr belw a MS7001E rtr and prvides a view f the thrust bearing runner, the N. 1 jurnal, and the cmpressr rtr blading. Figure 4 shws the turbine rtr with the N. 2 bearing jurnal and N. 3 bearing jurnal. Fig. 3 - Cmpressr Rtrs: MS9001E and MS7001E Fig. 2 - MS9001E Crss Sectin The rtr is supprted by three bearings, tw which are pressure lubricated, elliptical jurnal bearings and ne tilting pad jurnal bearing. A tilting pad thrust bearing is als lcated at the cmpressr inlet end, in the same husing as the frward jurnal bearing. Generatr pwer takeff is at the turbine end f the rtr. All three turbine stages have investment cast, lng-shank buckets. The design is typically applied t all General Electric units and has been prven successful by many years f field service. This cnstructin effectively shields the wheel rim and the bucket rt fastenings frm the high temperatures in the main gas stream. In additin, the lng-shank cnstructin aids in damping bucket vibratins. As a further cntrl against vibratin, the secnd and third stage buckets have interlcking shruds at the bucket tips. 3 Dwnladed Frm: n 06/29/2018 Terms f Use:

4 All three turbine stages utilize investment cast segmented nzzles. The first and secnd stage nzzle vanes are hllw, with impingement air cling and film cling f the trailing edges. The first stage nzzle segments are held in place by a cylindrical retaining ring at the uter circumference f segments. This ring is supprted at fur equidistant pints abut the circumference such that its centerline cincides with the turbine centerline regardless f thermal transients and is psitined axially by cntact with the first stage turbine statinary shrud. The first stage shrud is supprted frm the turbine shell (uter casing) and frms the uter bundary f the ht gas path ver the first stage buckets. This shrud is cled by cmpressr discharge air that flws thrugh hles in the shrud and then int the secnd stage nzzle vanes. Fig. 4 - MS9001E Turbine Rtr The turbine bucket cling air flw path is shwn in Figure 5. Air extracted frm the cmpressr inner diameter flws radially inward between the sixteenth and seventeenth stage wheels, and then thrugh the bre. The first and secnd stage bucket cling air flws radially utward between the first and secnd stage wheels. Air enters the shanks f the buckets and flws utward thrugh radial hles in the bucket vanes, The statinary shruds ver the secnd and third stage buckets are supprted by the turbine shell in the same manner as the first stage shrud. The secnd and third stage nzzle segments are in turn supprted by the statinary shruds. The number f nzzle vanes and segments is the same as the MS7001E, i.e., the first stage has 18 2-vane segments, the secnd stage has 16 3-vane segments, and the third stage has 16 4-vane segments. Figure 7 shws the nzzle segments fr stages 1, 2, and 3. Fig. 7-1st, 2nd, and 3rd Stage Nzzle Segments discharging int the gas path at the bucket tips. Figure 6 is a view f the bucket tips, shwing the exit f the cling hles. The cmbustin system cnsists f 14 individual cmbustrs, riented unifrmly arund the periphery f the cmpressr discharge regin. The cmbustin liners are f slt-cled cnstructin and are the same as the MS7001E, thereby sharing cmmnality f parts. Cmbustin gas flw path is shrtened with the canted cmbustin system, thereby permitting a strnger structure encased in a smaller pressure vessel. This is accmplished thrugh the use f a shrt transitin piece (Figure 8) between the liner and the first stage nzzle. A cntured flw sleeve guides the incming cmpressr discharge air t the liner, thereby imprving velcity distributin and liner heat transfer. 5 Turbine Wheels - Cr-M-V Frging Turbine Shell - Ductile Cast Irn The first stage turbine buckets are cated with a platinum-chrmium-aluminide cating t prvide prtectin against xidatin and crrsin. This cating has been field prven, starting in 1974, and has demnstrated a significant imprvement in crrsin resistance. Fig. 8 - Cmbustin Transitin Piece Cmpressr discharge air, which surrunds the liner, flws radially inward thrugh small hles in the liner wall and impinges against rings that are brazed t the liner wall thus frming a film f cler air whic ityphields the liner wall frm the ht cmbustin gas''. The MS9001E uses 20 f these slts spaced alng the length f the liner. Crssfire tubes cnnect adjacent liners, ensuring that flame in ne chamber will ignite all f the ther chambers. One each f tw redundant spark plugs is lcated in diametrically ppsite chambers t assure initial firing success. One each f the tw redundant flame detectrs is lcated in a chamber adjacent t each spark plug t cnfirm cmbustin ignitin. Bth spark plugs are autmatically retractable, utilizing a design feature successfully demnstrated in previus General Electric turbines. The MS9001E has prvisins fr internal inspectin f the gas turbine withut remving the uter casings. Openings are prvided in the cmpressr, turbine, and cmbustin casings t permit insertin f a brescpe fr visual inspectin f cmpressr blades, turbine nzzles and buckets, cmbustin liners and transitin pieces, and ther critical parts. A remvable plug was added t the aft wheelshaft t permit brescpe inspectin f the turbine wheels during maintenance perids. Figure 9 shws the brescpe access hles in the turbine area. The same penings can be used t insert eddy-current prbes fr inspectin f turbine bucket vanes and t prvide access fr measuring turbine nzzle clearance. Each cmbustr has a fuel nzzle, which can utilize either il r gas fuel, r a cmbinatin f il and gas. When il is used, the fuel is atmized by pressurized air t ensure gd atmizatin. The materials and prcesses used in the MS9001E are the same as thse used in the crrespnding MS7001 parts. The materials fr the majr cmpnents are: Cmpressr Blades - 12 Cr Steel Cmpressr Wheels - Ni-Cr-M-V (stages 1-15) Cr-M-V (stages 16 & 17) Cmpressr Casings - Grey Cast Irn Cmbustin Liner & Transitin Piece - Hastelly-X Cmbustin Wrapper Cast Steel Turbine Nzzles - FSX-414 Turbine Buckets - 1N738 (stages 1 & 2) U500 (stage 3) Fig. 9 - MS9001E Turbine Brescpe Access Hles In designing the MS9001E, sme deviatins were made frm a direct scaling f the MS7001. A brief descriptin f these deviatins is as fllws: TURBINE ROTOR Increasing the first stage bucket airfil leading edge radius t imprve perfrmance als permitted increasing the cling hle diameter, thus imprving life expectancy. TURBINE SHELL COOLING Cling air is intrduced at the uter shell f the exhaust frame assembly. One half f the air flw is directed frward thrugh hles in the uter structure f the turbine shell. The air discharges int the turbine cmpartment where it mixes with the cmpartment ventilatin air and is exhausted t the atmsphere by a suctin fan. 5 Dwnladed Frm: n 06/29/2018 Terms f Use:

6 The remaining half f the air intrduced at the dwnstream end f the turbine is used fr cling the exhaust frame. While mst f this air is channeled int the lad tunnel area (which includes the aft turbine rtr bearing and lad cupling shaft), a prtin is metered int the space aft f the third stage wheel. CONTROLS AND ACCESSORIES The MS9004 gas turbine is equipped with the Speedtrnic Mark II cntrl, prtectin, and sequencing system which includes a micrprcessr temperature cntrl system identifie e d 1,, as the Integrated Temperature System (ITS). ITS perfrms the temperature cntrl functin in additin t the cmbustin mnitr functin and the mdulated cmpressr inlet guide vane functin. The standard MS9001E starting system is pwered by a 1250 HP electric mtr driving thrugh a hydraulic trque cnverter directly cupled t the turbine rtr. The trque cnverter is equipped with variable guide vanes t prvide cntrl f crank speeds during start-up. This trque cnverter facilitates restart by eliminating the need fr having the rtr at standstill prir t restart. An alternate starting system utilizes the generatr as a cranking mtr by applying variable frequency pwer t the generatr thrugh a lad cmmutated cnverter. This system is being used n the first MS9001E installatin. The atmizing air system includes a psitive displacement lw pressure cmpressr and an utward flw centrifugal high pressure cmpressr. The fuel il pump and the cntrl il pump are f psitive displacement design. The flw divider is f a circular cnfiguratin with the furtee-u eter'n 1 (4 g elements munted arund the single sun gear T. PACKAGE POWER PLANT A typical package pwer plant arrangement as shwn in Figure 10 cnsists f the fllwing: Fllwing cnnectin t an electrical grid and a cmpatible fuel supply, this equipment cnstitutes a cmpletely self-cntained pwer plant. Architectural siding and acustical barriers can be prvided t meet site installatin requirements. Exhaust ducting may be riented t either the right r the left t prvide flexibility in statin arrangement. TURBINE AND ACCESSORY COMPARTMENTS Figure 2 shws the turbine and accessry mdules less their external utdr enclsures, r cmpartments. The exhaust plenum is shwn munted n its separate base. These mdules cntain the auxiliary equipment necessary fr starting and perating the gas turbine. The lubricatin system f the accessry package is designed t prvide all the il requirements f the gas turbine as well as the generatr. Cmpartments are ventilated by mtr driven fans. Space heaters are prvided t maintain a minimum temperature f 40F (4C) during shutdwn perids. A CO ire prtectin system is cntained in bth the 2 f turbine and accessry cmpartments. INLET DUCT SYSTEM The inlet air system includes a filter sectin and a silencer sectin in each f the three inlet ducts which are cmbining in a cmmn elbw; a transitin element is munted t an expansin jint at the inlet plenum. The inlet filter cmpartment shwn in Figure 10 cntains a bank f inertial separatrs, fllwed by high efficiency media filters. The standard inlet silencing system uses 12 feet (3.7 meters) f parallel batt silencing t achieve an verall package nise level f 60 DBA at 400 feet (122 meters). Lwer nise levels can be btained by increased silencing treatment. EXHAUST DUCT SYSTEM Turbine cmpartment Accessry cmpartment Inlet duct system Exhaust duct system Cntrl cmpartment Generatr cmpartment Cling water mdule The exhaust system cnfiguratin f the MS9001B was used n the MS9001E with nly minr mdificatins. Lining material, insulatin details, and stiffener cnfiguratins were taken frm the MS7001E design. Five (5) lw frequency silencer panels and eleven (11) high frequency panels are utilized. The exhaust frame is designed fr an exhaust back pressure f 40 inches H 2 O. The exhaust plenum and exhaust ducting are designed fr 20 inches H 2 O exhaust back pressure. Plenum and duct designs fr higher back pressures are dependent upn specific custmer and site requirements and the designs mdified as required. CONTROL COMPARTMENT Fr the package pwer plant, the cntrl cmpartment is psitined in line with the accessry cmpartment and cntains the fllwing: Fig Typical MS9001E Package Pwer Plant 4. 7 Variatins in the lcatin f the cntrl cmpartment t meet custmer and site requirements are acceptable. GENERATOR COMPARTMENT The standard MS9001E generatr fr bth simple cycle and cmbined cycle peratin is a hydrgen-cled design. This unit is cmpletely enclsed with a self-cntained ventilatin system including gas-t-water heat exchangers and circulating fans. This generatr has an ISO 50 Hz gas lad rating f 142,500 KVA with 0.8 pwer factr capability and a peak rating f 145,900 KVA. The gas turbine is directly cnnected t the generatr by a single piece cupling having sufficient flexibility t accmmdate transient alignment changes between the turbine and the generatr. Acustical materials are used in the inlet and exhaust cling duct t minimize sund levels. An alternate pen-ventilated, air-cled generatr design fr the simple cycle MS9001E is als available. This generatr has an ISO 50 Hz base lad rating f 141,000 KVA and a peak rating f 143,429 KVA. Design flexibility has been enhanced by adding prvisins fr direct air cling if required. Excitatin fr bth designs is prvided by a static hybrid thyristr and silicn dide bridge using a pwer ptential tranfrmer cnnected directly t the generatr utput leads. COOLING WATER MODULE The MS9001E Package Pwer Plant is equipped with a self-cntained clsed lp water-t-air cling system. The cling fluid is a water and ethylene glycl mixture. Fr the air-cled generatr applicatin, a single heat exchanger mdule having fur 40 hp mtrs driving separate end-munted fans, is lcated ver the accessry cmpartment and dissipates heat frm the lubricating il and the atmizing air pre-cler. Fr the hydrgen-cled generatr applicatin, an ff-base twin heat exchanger mdule arrangement is used t prvide the additinal generatr cling. INITIAL TESTING In cnjunctin with the standard factry n-lad perfrmance testing f the first unit, a series f special engineering tests were perfrmed t evaluate varius design parameters. The fllwing is a partial list f the gas turbine systems and cmpnents frm which engineering data was recrded: Fig Turbine Mdule i ivi ng:: ism wirr gaill t1 Fig MS9001E During Factry Test Data acquisitin equipment shwn in Figure 13 was installed t recrd the special engineering test data. This equipment included tape recrders, spectrum analyzers, pltters, and strip chart recrders. The pltters are especially useful in this type f test since they prvide a rapid means fr "n line" evaluatin f the data. Cmpressr perfrmance Cmbustin system dynamic pressures Unit vibratin Figure 11 is a view f the fully assembled turbine mdule, including the inlet plenum, en rute t the test stand. Figure 12 is a view f the MS9001E installed in General Electric's Greenville, S.C. Prductin Test Facility. Althugh the test stand installatin has dual side inlet and dual side exhausts, the standard custmer installatin wuld be verhead inlet and single side exhaust. 8 Vibratin spectra were taken frm a ttal f 15 separate sensrs lcated n the three bearing husings as well as the statr casings. Within the frequency range f interest all velcity measurements were within the acceptance level f 0.24 in/sec. Evaluatin f the factry test data shwed favrable results in all areas. Final perfrmance evaluatin will be established after the gas turbine is tested at full lad at the custmer site. Data frm all ther turbine and accessry systems was fund t be satisfactry and well within design limits. 2. D. ENGINEERING TEST PLAN Engineering testing f the first unit will cntinue fllwing installatin f the unit at the custmer site in Germany. This testing is intended t validate varius design parameters assciated with statr cmpnents f the gas turbine, under full lad cnditins. Gas path temperature prfile data will be taken at each turbine stage. Turbine nzzle and statr casing cling flws and temperatures will be measured alng with cmbustin liner and transitin piece metal temperatures and strains. The testing will include transient as well as steady state peratin. The secnd unit, which will be lad tested after installatin in Ireland, has an increased number f statr sensrs. In additin, there are 86 rtr sensrs t prvide bucket data. The bjective f the instrumentatin n this secnd unit is t validate metal temperatures fr statr and rtr cmpnents. This data will frm the basis fr defining the ptential fr the MS9001E. SUMMARY This paper describes the design f the MS9001E. Prduct design f this new large, heavy-duty 50 Hz gas turbine is derived frm the MS6001, MS7001E, and MS9001B mdel series, with the gas path design a direct 20% increase in size ver the MS7001E. A descriptin f the majr design features includes the cmbustin system, which has a canted cnfiguratin patterned after the MS6001A. One MS9001E has been built, factry tested, and shipped. Test results cnfirm that the turbine light-ff is sft, cmbustin peratin smth, vibratin levels very lw, and perfrmance better than expected.
