This minimizes interference frm fast-rising high-vltage spikes frm the mains Fr the same reasn ther leads shuld be kept away frm the bdy f the trigger unit. It is recmmended that the minimum 5mA cntrl current be increased t 10mA t allw fr ageing f the ptical cmpnents If simultaneus triggering is required fr a number f series-cnnected thyristrs, it is advisable t use pulse shaping fr the transmitter input. An RC netwrk with a time cnstant f 10µs can be used t create an initial current f 20mA, decaying t 10mA. It is als advisable t maintain the cntrl signal during the required cnductin perid f the thyristr. 11 Active Trigger units fr firing Pwer Thyristrs The principle f the EZYTrigger was develped and first emplyed by Bernhard Rudert in the mid-1970s fr T cranes. At that time the main custmer fr the prduct was the Suth African electricity utility (Eskm) which required reliable speed cntrl fr installing and maintaining their turbines. The EZYTrigger was als then supplied t the German crane manufacturer, Demag. By the 80 s Wlf Cranes was using the units fr 10 25T cranes and later fr 180T ladle cranes. The biggest ladle crane t date using the EZYTrigger is 600T. The units are used extensively in harsh and hazardus envirnments in the irn and steel industry, harburs and mines where the device had nt nly t stand up t high temperatures, but cntinuus high mains vltage spikes which were the cause f pulse tranfrmer breakdwn. The scpe f applicatins has grwn and nw encmpasses industries acrss the pwer spectrum wherever thyristrs are used. The riginal pen bard cnstructin went thrugh a number f design cycles t imprve perfrmance, reliability and ease f use. Tday, the EZYTrigger is a fully encapsulated, stand-alne cmpnent which requires nly input infrmatin frm a micrprcessr, CPLD r FPGA surce and cnnectin t the gate and cathde f the thyristr, thus eliminating the need fr an extra pwer supply and pulse transfrmers. Every single unit prduced is tested twice times in the prcess: nce befre encapsulatin and nce after encapsulatin. Test parameters f the EZYTrigger are such that similar cnditins wuld rarely be encuntered in the field, a fact which is reflected in the zer failure rate which has been achieved ver the past decades f use. Any unit which drps ut in either f these test prgrams, is subjected t a rigrus investigatin t preclude a recurrence f the cause.
