28 EC MOTOR APPLICATION EC MOTORS Mtrs With Built-in Variable Speed Optinal E r "M" Fan/Mtr Cde (see Nmenclature,pg. 2) Units with an "E" mtr designatin use an EC (electrnically cmmutated) mtr / fan cmbinatin t prvide variable speed cndenser cntrl. Units with a "M" mtr designatin use EC mtr nly with a remveable fan blade. Ideally the mtrs n the cndenser shuld all be EC and simultaneusly slw dwn/speed up tgether. This prvides fr maximum energy savings. Hwever sme applicatins may exist where just the last fan r pair f fans (nes clsest t header) are slely EC mtrs. (The remaining cnventinal type mtrs are then cycled ff by fan cycling pressure cntrls).! Imprtant Warnings: (Please read befre handling mtrs) 1. When cnnecting the unit t the pwer supply, dangerus vltages ccur. Due t mtr capacitr discharge time, d nt pen the mtr within 5 minutes after discnnectin f all phases. 2. With a Cntrl vltage fed in r a set speed value being saved, the mtr will restart autmatically after a pwer failure. 3. Dangerus external vltages can be present at the mtr terminals even when the unit is turned ff. 4. The Electrnics husing can get ht. 5. The cycling n and ff f EC mtrs shuld be cntrlled by the DC cntrl vltage (i.e. 10V DC will turn mtr ff). Excessive cycling f the mtr by line vltage cntactrs may cause stress n the mtrs and reduce the mtr life. Speed Adjustment Characteristics The EC mtr varies its speed linearly based n a 10-0V input signal. At 0 VDC, the mtr runs at full speed. At 10 VDC, the mtr turns ff. A chart f the speed cntrl curve is shwn belw. The mtr can be cntrlled at any speed belw its nminal RPM. Full RPM RPM OFF Cntrl Vltage (V dc) Cntrl Signal The input cntrl signal can be supplied by an external cntrl signal r frm a factry installed prprtinal pressure cntrl. Units with factry installed prprtinal pressure cntrls require n installatin wiring and are adjusted with initial factry settings. These may require further adjustments t suit lcal field cnditins. External Cntrl Signal (Supplied by thers) Cntact cntrl manufacturer fr setup f external cntrller t prvide a 10-0 VDC cntrl signal. Wire the cntrl signal t terminal bard in unit cntrl bx. Refer t the cndenser EC wiring diagram fr typical external signal cntrl wiring. 10 T50-TCL-PDI

35 CONDENSER THEORY THE BASIC REFRIGERATION CYCLE The cndenser first desuperheats the vapr dwn t its saturatin pint. This saturatin pint can be expressed as the cndensing temperature f the refrigerant and varies with cndenser size, lad and ambient temperature. Nw the cndenser must remve the latent heat f cndensatin frm the refrigerant s that it may fully cndense. After the refrigerant has fully cndensed, it will be subcled t sme extent.the liquid leaving the cndenser is still at a high pressure but at a much lwer temperature and drains int the receiver. As the liquid level in the receiver increases, the vapr is allwed t vent back up t the cndenser via \the cndensate line. The purpse f a refrigeratin system is t absrb heat frm an area where it is nt wanted and reject this heat t an area where it is unbjectinable. By referring t the diagram belw, it can be seen that nly a few cmpnents are required t perfrm this task. High pressure/high temperature vapr leaves the cmpressr and is frced int the cndenser via the discharge line. Because the dip tube almst reaches the bttm f the receiver, nly liquid will enter the liquid line. This liquid nw passes thrugh the metering device where its pressure is reduced t the evaprating pressure. The temperature will drp with pressure since the refrigerant will always attempt t meet its saturatin pint during a change f state. The cndensing temperature decreases as the ambient temperature drps and/r as the cndenser surface increases. Balance pint - after a system stabilizes, the heat added t the refrigerant during the refrigeratin cycle will equal the heat rejected at the cndenser. The balance pint usually refers t the actual TD that the system is perating at. The balance pint culd refer t a lw side balance r a high side balance. Fr example, a system perating with a 120 F (48.9 C) cndensing temperature in a 90 F (32.2 C) ambient will have a cndenser balance pint f 30 F (-1.1 C) TD. Circuit - a circuit can be cnsidered a grup f feeds. A cndenser may be sized t handle several refrigeratin systems at ne time. Each system is cnsidered ne circuit and the number f feeds required fr each circuit depends n the THR fr that particular system. Each circuit has its wn inlet and utlet header. The number f circuits n a cndenser can nt exceed the ttal number f feeds available. Cmpressin Rati - Cmpressin rati equals the discharge pressure in punds per square inch abslute (psia) divided by the suctin pressure in psia. The cmpressin rati in a cmpressr increases as suctin pressure decreases and as discharge pressure increases. (at sealevel, psia is equal t psig plus 14.7). Cmpressr Capacity - can be defined as the actual refrigerating capacity available at the evapratr and suctin line after cnsidering the verall system balance pint. Cmpressr capacity is mainly affected by the evaprating and cndensing temperatures f the system. Cndensate Line - (als called Drain Leg ) is a term that describes the refrigerant line between the cndenser and GLOSSARY OF TERMS the receiver. The cndensate line shuld drp vertically and is typically larger than the liquid line. This is t prmte free draining f the refrigerant frm the cndenser t the receiver. Cndenser Temperature Difference (TD) - is the difference between the cndensing temperature f the refrigerant and the temperature f the air entering the cndenser. Cndensing Temperature (CT) - is the temperature where the refrigerant vapr cndenses back t a liquid. This temperature varies with cndenser size. Cndensing temperature shuld be kept as lw as pssible t maintain higher refrigerating capacity and system efficiency Desuperheat - refers t the lwering f refrigerant superheat. Ht vapr entering a cndenser must first be desuperheated befre any cndensing f the refrigerant can take place. Evaprating Temperature - the temperature at which heat is absrbed in the evapratr, at this temperature, the refrigerant changes frm a liquid t a vapr. This evaprating temperature is dependent n pressure and must be lwer than the surrunding temperature fr heat transfer t take place. Feed - a single path fr refrigerant flw inside a cndenser. This path begins at the inlet header and terminates at the cndenser s utlet header. These feeds can be gruped tgether t accmmdate ne r mre circuits. T50-TCL-PDI
36 GLOSSARY OF TERMS (cnt'd) Heat f Cmpressin - heat is added t the refrigerant as it is cmpressed. Evidence f this can be bserved n the pressure-enthalpy diagram fr the refrigerant being used. The amunt f this heat is dependent n the refrigerant type and cmpressin rati. Additinal heat frm frictin als increases the heat f cmpressin. All f this heat alng with the heat absrbed in the evapratr, suctin line and any mtr heat must be rejected by the cndenser. Latent Heat f Vaprizatin (als Latent Heat f Cndensatin) - refers t the heat required t fully vaprize r cndense a refrigerant. This latent heat varies with temperature and pressure. Latent heat is ften referred t as hidden heat since adding heat t a saturated liquid r remving heat frm a saturated vapr will result in a change f state and heat cntent but nt a change in temperature. Liquid Line - is the piping between the receiver and the metering device. On systems withut a receiver, the liquid line runs between the cndenser and the metering device. remved frm a saturated vapr will result in cndensatin. Cnversely, any heat added t a saturated liquid will result in evapratin f the refrigerant. Temperature pressure charts fr the varius refrigerants indicate saturatin values. Fr a single cmpnent refrigerant, each temperature value can nly have ne pressure when the refrigerant is either a saturated vapr r saturated liquid. A single cmpnent refrigerant can nt change state until it appraches its saturatin temperature r pressure. Fr refrigerant blends, the pressure-temperature relatinship is mre cmplex. Simply stated, Dew pint temperature (saturatin pint in evapratr-lw side) and Bubble pint temperature (saturatin pint in cndenser-high side) are used t define their saturated cnditin. Subcl - t reduce a refrigerant s temperature belw its saturatin pint r bubble pint. Subcling f the refrigerant is necessary in rder t maintain a slid clumn f liquid at the inlet t the metering device. Subcling can take place naturally (in the cndenser) r it can be accmplished by a suctin liquid heat exchanger r a mechanical sub-cler (separate refrigeratin system). Open Drive - This term is given t a cmpressr where its driving mtr is separate frm the cmpressr. In this type f cmpressr, mtr heat is nt transferred t the refrigerant. Refrigerating Effect - the ttal amunt f heat absrbed by the evapratr. This heat includes bth latent heat and superheat. This value is usually expressed in BTU/Hur, (BTUH), r 1000 BTU/Hur (MBH) Saturatin - ccurs whenever the refrigerant exists in bth a vapr and liquid state, example: a cylinder f refrigerant is in a saturated cnditin r state f equilibrium. Any heat During a cndenser selectin prcess, the applicatin engineer shuld chse a cndenser which is large enugh t reject all f the heat added t the refrigerant during the refrigerating cycle. When the cndenser is sized t equal the ttal heat f rejectin (THR) at design cnditins, enugh heat will be rejected t maintain the required cndensing temperature. This will ensure that sufficient refrigeratin capacity will be maintained at the evapratr during the warm summer perid when it is needed the mst. UNDERSIZED CONDENSER CONDENSER SELECTION PROPERLY SELECTED CONDENSER Superheat - t heat a refrigerant abve its saturatin pint r dew pint. The amunt f superheat is the difference between the actual refrigerant temperature and its saturatin temperature. This value is usually expressed in degrees Fahrenheit r degrees Celsius. Ttal Heat f Rejectin (THR) is the heat absrbed at the evapratr plus the heat picked up in the suctin line plus the heat added t the refrigerant in the cmpressr. Cndensers are sized accrding t the required THR. Cmpressr capacity and the heat f cmpressin are usually enugh t determine the THR. If a cndenser is undersized, the cndensing temperature (CT) will be driven upwards. This naturally ccurs as the system seeks its newbalance pint. As the CT increases, the perating temperature difference (TD) f the cndenser als increases. Even thugh the capacity f the cndenser increases with the higher TD, the refrigerating capacity f the cmpressr will decrease due t the higher cndensing temperature. An undersized cndenser may perfrm satisfactrily when ambient temperatures are belw design, but the verall system capacity will nt be high enugh during the warmer perids. Oversizing a cndenser increases prject csts and can als lead t undesirable perating cnditins. Lw ambient cntrl devices such as pressure regulatrs and fan cycling switches perate t maintain a sufficient pressure in the cndenser during lw ambient perids.on systems utilizing a receiver and flding type f head pressure cntrl, mre refrigerant will be required t fld the cndenser in rder t achieve the desired cndensing pressure. T50-TCL-PDI
37 CONDENSER SELECTION Cnsider an air cnditining system with an versized cndenser which is nly used during the summer time and des nt have any type f head pressure cntrl. This particular system may experience prblems due t a lack f subcling. Since the cndenser was versized the amunt f natural subcling available is less. The maximum amunt f natural subcling pssible is the difference between the cndensing temperature and the ambient temperature. If this amunt f subcling is nt enugh t ffset the pressure lsses in the liquid line, then flashing is certain t ccur. Flashing prduces vapr at the metering device which was designed t meter 100% liquid. One cure fr this is t apply head pressure cntrl devices t the system that will increase the head pressure and ensure adequate liquid subcling PRELIMINARY DATA REQUIREMENTS There are several factrs that influence the size f an aircled cndenser. Befre a cndenser can be prperly selected, this infrmatin must be btained. It may be cnvenient fr yu t refer t the calculatin wrksheets as yu read thrugh the fllwing infrmatin. 1. What are the Desired Evaprating and Cndensing Temperatures? The evaprating temperature is needed t determine the THR (ttal heat f rejectin) f the cndenser. As the evaprating temperature is lwered, the heat f cmpressin increases due t the higher cmpressin rati. This affects THR. The required cndensing temperature (CT) must be knwn befre the temperature difference can be determined. This is necessary since cndenser capacity varies with temperature difference. The required cmpressr capacity will determine the maximum CT since the cmpressr can nly prvide this capacity at certain perating cnditins. Yu culd als refer t Table 1 fr CT recmmendatins. The heat f cmpressin varies with cmpressin rati. Bth evaprating and cndensing temperatures affect the cmpressin rati.often custmers may request a specified TD value (i.e 10, 15 F, (5.5 C, 8.3 C) etc.). The cndensing temperature is then established as being the sum f this TD value and the design ambient temperature. (i.e = 105 F ( = 40.5 C)) 2. Cmpressr Capacity Determine the capacity f the cmpressr at the desired evaprating and cndensing cnditins. Remember, tns refrigeratin des nt necessarily equal hrsepwer. As the evaprating temperature decreases and/r the cndensing temperature increases, tns refrigeratin per hrsepwer decreases. One tn refrigeratin equals Btuh (3519W). 3. Cndenser Ambient Design Temperature This will be the maximum design temperature f the air entering the cndenser. It is typical t add abut 5 F t the maximum utdr design temperature in sme instances t cmpensate fr radiatin frm a dark surface such as a black rf. 4. Type f Cmpressr It is necessary t identify the type f cmpressr t be utilized in the applicatin s that accurate heat f rejectin infrmatin may be btained. Fr example, pen-drive cmpressrs can be belt driven r direct cupled t the mtr. Electrical energy frm the mtr is cnverted t heat energy which is nt transferred t the refrigerant as in a refrigerant cled cmpressr. In a hermetic refrigerant cled cmpressr, the cl suctin vapr picks up heat as it travels thrugh the warm mtr windings. The cndenser must be sized t reject this heat alng with any ther heat absrbed by the refrigerant. It can be bserved in Table 2 that hermetic refrigerant cled cmpressrs have higher heat f rejectin factrs. 5. Heat f Cmpressin As the refrigerant is cmpressed in the cmpressr, its heat cntent increases due t the physical and thermdynamic prperties f the refrigerant. Additinal heat frm frictin between mving parts in the cmpressr als increases the heat cntent f the refrigerant. The amunt f heat added t the refrigerant is dependent n the refrigerant type, the cmpressin rati and the type f cmpressr. Accurate THR r heat f cmpressin factrs may be available frm the cmpressr manufacturer. Always attempt t access this infrmatin prir t using ther methds. If this infrmatin is nt available, refer t the heat f rejectin factrs in Table 2. Hwever, in situatins where yur applicatin exceeds the limits f this table, such as in cmpund cmpressin and cascade systems, ne f the fllwing calculatins may be perfrmed. Fr OPEN DRIVE COMPRESSORS Ttal heat f Rejectin = Cmpressr Capacity (Btuh) + (2545 x BHP) (KW) + (3410 x KW) (BHP - Brake Hrsepwer f the mtr) Fr SUCTION COOLED COMPRESSORS: Ttal heat Rejectin = Cmpressr Capacity (BTUH) + (3413 x KW) (KW may be btained frm the pwer input curve fr that cmpressr) 6. What is the Refrigerant Type? A cndenser s capacity can vary by 8 t 10% due t differences in physical and thermdynamic prperties. Refer t the crrect refrigerant capacity table r use factr as indicated. 7. Altitude The vlume f a given mass f air increases as it rises abve sea level. As its vlume increases, its density decreases. As the air becmes less dense, its heat capacity decreases. Therefre, mre air vlume wuld have t be frced thrugh the cndenser at 6,000 feet (1852 m) abve sea level than at sea level. Since cndenser capacities are based n peratin at sea level, an altitude crrectin factr must be applied t the ttal heat f rejectin. Basically, the lad n the cndenser will be increased t a pint which will cmpensate fr the higher altitude. T50-TCL-PDI
38 CONDENSER SELECTION 8. Are yu Replacing a Water Cled Cndenser with a Remte Air Cled Cndenser? If this is the case, it shuld be remembered that the cmpressr will perate at a higher discharge pressure after cnverting t air cled. T help minimize the resulting lss in capacity, the cndenser shuld be sized generusly. In ther wrds, yu may cnsider keeping the balance pint f the cndenser as lw as pssible. 9. Is this an applicatin fr multiple circuits? If yu wish t utilize the cndenser fr multiple circuits, then all f the abve data must be btained fr EACH circuit. After btaining this infrmatin, prceed t the MULTIPLE CIR- CUIT WORKSHEET (fr single circuit applicatins refer t the SINGLE CIRCUIT WORKSHEET) TABLE 1 - CONDENSING TEMPERATURE GUIDELINES Evaprating Temperature Lw Temp Systems F (-40 F t + 9 F Evap Temps) ( C) (-40 C t C Evap Temps) Medium Temp Systems F ( +10 F t +34 F Evap Temps) ( C) (-12.2 C t 1.11 C Evap Temps) High Temp Systems F ( +35 F t +50 F Evap Temps) ( C) ( 1.6 C t 10 C Evap Temps) Air Cnditining Systems F ( +40 F t +50 F Evap Temps) ( C) ( 4 C t 10 C Evap Temps) * TD - Cndenser TD guideline EVAPORATOR TEMPERATURE Cndensing Temperature Guidelines ( at 85 t 105 F ( 29.4 t C) A m bient Temperature) TD* 85 F ( C) 90 F ( C) 95 F ( 35 C) 100 F ( C) 105 F ( C) F ( C) F ( C) F ( C) F ( C) F ( C) F ( C) F ( C) F ( C) TABLE 2 - HEAT OF REJECTION FACTORS F C OPEN F ( C) F ( C) F ( C) F ( C) CONDENSING TEMPERATURE F ( C) F ( C) F ( C) F ( C) F TD* ( C) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) 90 F ( 32 C) 100 F ( 38 C) 105 F ( 41 C) 110 ( 43 C) 115 F ( 46 C) 120 F ( 49 C) 130 F ( 55 C) 140 F ( 60 C) * , ,09 HERM OPEN * HERM OPEN * HERM OPEN * HERM OPEN * * HERM OPEN - Direct Drive r Belt Drive pen cmpressrs HERM - Hermetic r semi-hermetic, Refrigerant (suctin) cled mtr cmpressrs. 41 LOW AMBIENT OPERATION GENERAL When air-cled cndensers are installed utdrs, they will be subjected t varying ambient temperatures. This variance culd be as much as 120 F (48.9 C) f swing thrughut the summer and winter seasns and will have a majr impact n the perfrmance f the cndenser. As the ambient temperature drps, the cndenser capacity will increase due t the wider temperature difference between ambient and cndensing temperature. As this happens, the cndensing temperature will als drp as the system finds a new balance pint. Althugh verall system capacity will increase, ther prblems can ccur. The capacity f an expansin valve is affected by bth the liquid temperature entering the valve and the pressure drp acrss it. As the cndensing temperature decreases, the pressure drp acrss the metering device als decreases. This lwer pressure drp will then decrease the capacity f the valve. Althugh lwer liquid temperatures increase the capacity f the metering device, the increase is nt large enugh t ffset the lss due t the lwer pressure drp. T prvide adequate pressure drp, sme frm f head pressure cntrl is required. Refer t the fllwing design methds (cvered in rder f simplicity and features). (i) Fan Cycling (Multiple Fans) Cycling f the cndenser fans helps regulate the cndensing temperature. Using this apprach, as the ambient drps the fans are taken ff-line either ne at a time, r in pairs. With multiple fan cndensers, it is nt recmmended t cycle mre than tw fans per step. The reasn is that the pressure in the cndenser will increase drastically as several fans are taken ff-line at the same time. This will result in erratic peratin f the refrigeratin system and applies additinal stress t the cndenser tubes. It is preferable t regulate the cndensing temperature as smthly as pssible. Fans shuld be cycled independently n single rw cndenser fan mdels. On duble wide cndensers, when used with a single refrigeratin circuit, the fans shuld be cycled in pairs. (ii) Variable Mtr Speed Cntrl Variable Mtr Speed Cntrl If additinal head pressure cntrl is required beynd the last step f fan cycling variable fan mtr speed may be used. Variable mtr speed is ptinal n all cndenser mdels. A varying mtr speed may be accmplished using a mdulating temperature r mdulating pressure cntrl. A variable EC mtr varies the RPM f the mtr depending n the temperature r pressure f the medium being sensed. (iii) Refrigerant Regulating Cntrls Pressure regulating cntrls are available frm a number f valve manufacturers. The purpse f such a cntrl is t regulate the refrigerant flw in such a way as t maintain a pre-selected cndensing pressure. In lwer ambient temperatures, these valves thrttle t maintain the desired pressure and in ding s, fld the cndenser with liquid refrigerant.the larger the cndenser surface is, the higher its capacity will be. When a cndenser is flded, its useful cndensing surface is reduced. This is because the refrigerant ccupies the space which wuld therwise be used fr cndensing. Sme cntrl/check valve cmbinatins will regulate refrigerant flw depending n the pressure at the inlet f the cndenser.these are ften referred t as inlet regulatrs. As the valve clses, ht gas bypasses the cndenser thrugh a differential check valve t increase the pressure at the receiver. Ambient temperature r pressure sensing cntrls can be set t bring n (r ff) certain fans when the utdr temperature r cndensing pressures reach a predetermined cnditin. Temperature r pressure set pints and differentials shuld be crrectly set t prevent shrt cycling f the fans. Cnstant shrt cycling will prduce vlatile cndensing pressures, erratic refrigeratin perfrmance, decreased fan mtr life, and added stress t the cndenser tubes. Fr recmmended fan cycling switch settings, refer t Tables 4 and 5. Differential settings n fan cycling temperature cntrls shuld be n lwer than 3.5 F (2 C). On fan cycling pressure cntrls with R404A, a differential f apprximately 35 psig is recmmended. On supermarket applicatins remte cndenser fans may be cycled individually (nt in pairs) and therefre lwer differential settings may apply and will depend n the specific applicatin. Fans clsest t the inlet header must run whenever the cmpressr is running and shuld NEVER be cycled since sudden stress changes placed n these inlet tubes and headers will dramatically shrten the life f the cndenser. Table 1 shws the fan cycling cnfiguratins and ptins available fr all remte cndenser mdels. T50-TCL-PDI
42 LOW AMBIENT OPERATION (cnt'd) CONDENSER CONDENSER SINGLE VALVE HEAD PRESSURE CONTROL ORI VALVE DIFFERENTIAL CHECK VALVE LIQUID RECEIVER SINGLE VALVE CONDENSER PRESSURE CONTROL (Regulates inlet pressure r utlet pressure depending n valve design) LIQUID RECEIVER ORI / ORD CONDENSER PRESSURE CONTROL This will fld the cndenser until the cndensing pressure increases t a pint which will again pen the valve. Other valves regulate the refrigerant at the utlet f the cndenser t prvide a similar effect. These are cmmnly referred t as utlet regulatrs. There are als cmbinatin inlet/utlet regulatrs with a differential check valve r ther type f cndenser bypass arrangement incrprated within the valve. Cntrls which regulate the flw f refrigerant based n cndenser inlet pressure are typically used in cnjuctin with a check valve having a minimum pening differential acrss the cndenser. Outlet regulatrs typically require a check valve with a fixed pressure differential setting f between 20 and 35 psi. The differential is needed t cmpensate fr pressure drp thrugh the cndenser during flding and assciated discharge piping. Systems equipped with a cndenser flding arrangement shuld always use a receiver having sufficient liquid hlding capacity. Additinal liquid required fr flding is nly required during the winter lw ambients and must be stred smewhere in the system at the higher ambients. Failure t use an adequately sized receiver will result in liquid back-up in the cndenser during the warmer summer mnths. This will cause the system t develp very high pressures in the high side resulting in a high pressure safety cntrl trip. Determining Additinal Flded Refrigerant Charge Additinal charge will vary with the cndenser design TD and the cldest expected ambient temperature. Cndensers designed fr lw TD applicatins (lw temperature evapratrs) and perating in clder ambients will require mre additinal charge than thse designed fr higher TD applicatins (high temperature evapratrs) and warmer ambients. Refer t pages t determine the required added refrigerant charge at the selected TD and ambient temperatures. These charges are based n cndensers using Fan Cycling ptins with their last fan (Single Rw Fan Mdels) running r last pair f fans running (Duble Rw Fan mdels). WARNING: D nt ver charge when charging by a sightglass. Liquid lines feeding the TXV at the evapratr must have a slid clumn f liquid (n bubbles) hwever bubbles at the sightglass (lcated adjacient t the receiver) may be nrmal due t the result f a higher pressure drp at that pint. Bubbles culd als appear in the glass whenever the regulating valves start t fld the cndenser. Always recrd the number f drums r the weight f refrigerant that has been added r remved in the system. Overcharged systems may result in cmpressr failure as well as ther serius mechanical damage t the system cmpnents. T50-TCL-PDI

51 INSTALLATION REFRIGERANT PIPING All refrigeratin piping must be installed by a qualified refrigeratin mechanic. The imprtance f crrect refrigerant pipe sizing and layut cannt be ver-emphasized. Failure t bserve prper refrigerant piping practices can result in equipment failure which may nt be cvered under warranty. All air cled cndensers are supplied cmplete with headers and refrigerant cnnectins sized fr cnnecting t standard refrigeratin tubing. These cnnectins may nt be the same as the actual line sizes required fr the field installatin. Refer t a recgnized surce (ASHRAE charts, manufacturer s engineering manuals etc.) fr line sizing. DISCHARGE LINES The prper design f discharge lines invlves fllwing bjective: t minimize refrigerant pressure drp, since high pressure lsses increase the required cmpressr hrsepwer per tn f refrigeratin. Discharge lines must be pitched away frm the cmpressr t ensure prper drainage f il being carried in the line. A discharge check-valve at the bttm f a vertical riser will prevent il (and liquid refrigerant) frm draining back t the cmpressr during the ff-cycle. When the vertical lift exceeds 30 feet (9 m), insert clsecupled traps in the riser at 30 feet (9 m) intervals An alternate methd f handling the il prblem wuld be the additin f an il separatr see Figure 4 (b). A reverse trap shuld be installed at the tp f all vertical risers. The tp f the reverse trap shuld be the highest pint in the discharge line and shuld have an access valve installed t allw the reclaimatin f nn-cndensible gas frm the system. Pulsatin f the ht gas in the discharge line is an inherent characteristic f systems utilizing reciprcating cmpressrs. The discharge line must be rigidly supprted alng its entire length t prevent transmissin f vibratin and mvement f the line. CONDENSATE LINES The cndensate line must be designed t allw free drainage f refrigerant frm the cndenser cil t the receiver. Refer t Fig. 5 fr typical cndensate line piping when utilizing head pressure regulating valves. Any wiring diagrams shwn are basic and d nt necessarily include electrical cmpnents which must be field supplied. (see pages fr typical wiring diagrams). Refer t the Electrical Specificatins table n pages 5, 10 and 15) fr vltage availability and entering service requirements. SYSTEM START-UP CHECKS 1. Check the electrical characteristics f all cmpnents t be sure they agree with the pwer supply. 2. Check tightness f all fans and mtr munts. 3. Check tightness f all electrical cnnectins. 4. Upn start-up, check fans fr crrect rtatin. Air is drawn thrugh the cndenser cil. T change rtatin n 3 phase units reverse any tw (2) fan mtr leads. 5. All system piping must be thrughly leak checked befre a refrigerant charge is intrduced. MAINTENANCE The mst effective way t prevent ptential prblems with this air cled cndenser is t have a SEMI-ANNUAL INSPECTION perfrmed by a qualified refrigeratin service mechanic. 1. WHEN SERVICING EQUIPMENT, THE MAIN POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DISCONNECTED TO PREVENT POTENTIAL HAZARDOUS RISK. 2. Check all electrical cmpnents fr damage. Tighten any lse cnnectins. 3. Check settings f all cntrls t ensure prper peratin. 4. Lk fr any wear n wires r refrigerant lines that may have been caused by excessive vibratins r rubbing n metal parts 5. Shrt cycling fan mtrs can result in premature failure f the fan blades and/r mtrs. Failing t crrect this prblem may, ver time, cause the rivets n fan blades t becme lse. If this happens, the fan blade may crack r tear, causing extreme vibratin, ptentially triggering the mtr and munts t fail. 6. Check the tightness f all fan blades and mtrs. Remve any dirt r debris that culd affect the balance f the fan blade. 7. Fan mtrs are permanently lubricated and require nly visual inspectin T50-TCL-PDI
