5 The purpose of this maual is to assist you i operatig ad maitaiig your Power Box Rake. Read it carefully. It furishes iformatio ad istructios that will help you achieve years of depedable performace. These istructios have bee compiled from extesive field experiece ad egieerig data. Some iformatio may be geeral i ature due to ukow ad varyig operatig coditios. However, through experiece ad these istructios, you should be able to develop procedures suitable to your particular situatio. GENERAL INFORMATION The illustratios ad data used i this maual were curret at the time of pritig, but due to possible ilie productio chages, your machie may vary slightly i detail. PREPARATION Always check with your skid-steer maual or dealer for couter weight ballast that may be required for machie stability. Before operatig or allowig ayoe to approach the equipmet, purge ay air i the system by operatig all hydraulic fuctios several times after coectig equipmet, coectig hoses, or doig ay hydraulic maiteace. Hoses must ot be twisted, bet sharply, kiked, frayed, piched, or come ito cotact with ay movig parts. Operate moveable compoets through full operatioal rage to check clearaces. Replace ay damaged hoses immediately. Always wear relatively tight ad belted clothig to avoid etaglemet i movig parts. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes ad protective equipmet for eyes, hair, hads, hearig ad head. Esure implemet is properly attached, adjusted ad i good operatig coditio. Skid-steer coupler lock-pis must be fully exteded ad properly egaged ito attachmet retaiig slots. Skid-steer must be equipped with ROPS ad seat belt/operator restrait. Never use the skid-steer attachmet to carry loads that exceed skid-steer rated operatig capacity or other skid-steer specificatios. Positio hydraulic hoses so they will ot be piched whe coectig the power rake. The skid-steer coupler hadles should be i the ulocked positio ad the lockpis retracted. Figure 2. Skid-Steer Coupler Hadles - Ulocked Move to the skid-steer operator seat ad start egie. Lower skid-steer lift arms to their lowest positio. Carefully move ad alig the skid-steer to the power rake. The top of the skid-steer coupler must idex ito the power rake flage, Figure 3. Roll the skid-steer coupler ito the power rake so the coupler hadles ca be egaged. 12

Move the skid-steer coupler hadles to the locked positio. The lockpis must be completely exteded ad secured ito the slots provided o the power rake, Figure 4 ad Figure 5. Coect hydraulic hoses to skid-steer auxiliary quick couplers. Mout the agle cotrol switch i a coveiet, easyto-reach locatio. The switch bracket is magetic ad will attach to ay flat steel surface. Coect the power cord to the cable comig from the switch. Be careful whe routig the cable that sharp edges or movig parts will ot damage the cable. Figure 4. Back of Attachmet - Slot Locatios POWER RAKE FUNCTION The power rake hydraulic motor drives the roller, which digs ito the groud, cultivatig ad pullig up rocks, roots, ad debris. The clea soil goes betwee the roller ad barrier, while the rocks, roots, ad debris work to the side i a widrow. With the edplates mouted i the workig positio ad the rake straight (edplates parallel with skid-steer tires), material ca be moved alog, fillig i the low spots. Also, rocks, roots, ad debris ca be collected ad moved to aother locatio for haulig away. PRE-OPERATION CHECK LIST (OWNER S RESPONSIBILITY) Review ad follow all safety rules ad safety decal istructios o pages 5 through 8. Check that all safety decals are istalled ad i good coditio. Replace if damaged. Check that all shields ad guards are properly istalled ad i good coditio. Replace if damaged. Check that all hardware ad cotter pis are properly istalled ad secured. Check that equipmet is properly ad securely attached to skid-steer. Do ot allow riders. Check ad keep all bystaders away from equipmet workig area. 13

16 Check all lubricatio poits ad grease as istructed i the Maiteace sectio startig o page 18. Check that all hydraulic hoses ad fittigs are i good coditio ad ot leakig before startig skid-steer. Check that hoses are ot twisted, bet sharply, kiked, frayed, or pulled tight. Replace ay damaged hoses immediately. Make sure skid-steer ROPS ad seat belt are i good coditio. Keep seat belt securely fasteed durig operatio. OPERATION Start skid-steer egie. Lower power rake slowly to the groud. Egage hydraulic cotrol lever for auxiliary implemets. Icrease egie rpm to give desired rpm at the roller. Normal operatig speed is approximately 270 rpm. If operatig i heavy rock, reduce the speed slightly. Move the skid-steer forward or backward as desired. For the roller to operate effectively, it must rotate i the opposite directio of the skid-steer wheels (see Figure 6). Roller rotatio directio is cotrolled by skid-steer hydraulic cotrols. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Read ad uderstad the power rake ad skid-steer Operator s Mauals before operatig the power rake. Failure to do so may result i death, serious persoal ijury, or property damage. Never raise the power rake more tha a few iches off the groud whe travelig from job site to job site. Shut off the egie, set brake, remove key, remove seat belt, ad release operator restrait. Dismout the skid-steer. WARNING Improper operatio ca cause the machie to tip or roll over ad cause ijury or death. Keep skid-steer lift arms ad attachmet as low as possible. Do ot travel or tur with skid-steer lift arms ad attachmet raised. Tur o level groud. Go up ad dow slopes, ot across them. Keep the heavy ed of the machie uphill. Do ot overload the machie. I heavy rock, reduce the groud speed to 1 to 3 mph. Directio Cotrol Switch A three positio switch is provided to agle the rake left or right. The switch is equipped with a magetic mout ad may be attached to a coveiet steel surface ear the operator. The directio valve uses a small amout of hydraulic oil bypassed from the roller drive motor ad will oly operate with the skid-steer auxiliary hydraulic system egaged ad with the roller turig clockwise. With the skid-steer auxiliary hydraulic system egaged, move the sprig loaded switch i oe directio ad the 14

17 rake will agle left or right. Retur the switch to ceter positio ad rake will maitai the agle selected. Pivot rake to place the widrow left or right of the skid-steer. Hydraulic Drive Motor The hydraulic drive motor rus off the auxiliary circuit of the skid-steer. The power rake should be ru at 30% power for oe hour for proper motor break-i. Power Roller Roller should be level with the groud. The power rake should also be level with the groud frot to back. To accomplish this, raise or lower gauge wheels ad/ or use the skid-steer s tilt cylider. To allow the roller to peetrate deeper ito the groud, loose the hadle ad raise the gauge wheels. To achieve the opposite, lower the gauge wheels. The chai case ed of roller weighs about 90 lbs. more tha the other ed of roller. To compesate for this, you should set the tire closest to the chai case dow 1" lower tha opposite tire. This will still give a eve grade whe ladscapig, but will prevet uusual or excess wear o the teeth o that ed of the roller. Durig operatio, further depth cotrol ca be achieved by tiltig the rake forward o gauge wheels to raise roller, or by tiltig the rake back to raise gauge wheels ad allow more roller peetratio. Be sure to check the air pressure i each tire regularly so that a eve, cosistet grade will be maitaied. The ormal gap betwee the roller ad barrier for average coditios is about 1-1/4". This gap ca be adjusted either wider or arrower by looseig the U- bolt that holds the barrier mout ad slidig it up or dow. A wider opeig will allow more dirt ad rock to pass through. For fier rakig, reduce the gap. (Be careful ot to let roller hit barrier.) The gap should be the same all the way across. Barrier adjustmet is show i Figure 7. The roller o the power rake is bi-rotatioal. You ca operate the roller i both directios - clockwise ad couter-clockwise. The roller operates most efficietly whe it rotates i the opposite directio of the skid-steer wheels. OPERATION Operatig Depth Whe power rakig, the depth will determie how much dirt is carried ahead of the roller. The ideal depth will vary with coditios ad ca be aywhere from skimmig the surface to about 3" deep. See istructios i Power Roller above to set roller depth. Whe makig the first widrow, the level of dirt may be halfway up o the barrier. Whe movig the widrow two or three times, the level of the dirt may be to the top of the barrier. However, try to prevet material from flowig over the top. The power rake allows fast rakig of large areas of groud by beig able to move widrows several times. Of course, the volume or desity of the material beig raked will dictate how may times a widrow ca be moved. Edplates The fuctio of the edplates is to cotai the material i frot of the roller while the clea material passes betwee the roller ad barrier. With the edplates mouted i the workig positio ad the rake straight (parallel with skid-steer tires), material ca be moved alog, fillig i the low spots. By decreasig the gap betwee the roller ad barrier, more material ca be pulled alog. Barrier adjustmet is show i Figure 7. These plates ca be mouted to the frot or back of the power rake, depedig o the rakig directio. Whe you move the edplates from frot to back, you must move the left oe to the right side ad the right oe to the left side. Make sure the discoected power rake is stored o a hard, level surface. Use the edplates mouted o attachmet side of rake to esure stability. Parallel Arms The fuctio of the parallel arms is to allow the power rake to float ad follow the cotour of the groud. Lock-out pis are supplied to allow more aggressive actio. However, the hydraulic motor may stall out if too much dow pressure is applied. See Figure 7 for pi float ad lock-out positios. Operator Productio Successful operatio of the power rake will come with operator experiece. The rake s performace also depeds o the type ad size of the skid-steer it s mouted o. A operator that masters the techique of adjustig the agle of attack of the roller agaist the soil will also fid ideal settigs uder various coditios to give the desired results. 15

The attachmet plate is rolled back to take the guide wheels off the groud so oly the toothed roller is i cotact with the groud. Maitai sufficiet rpm to avoid stallig the toothed roller i its progress. The rake ca be straight or agled, but the edplates should ot be mouted i order to allow material to move out of the way ad ot slow the process. OPERATION Thatchig Existig Grass Areas This procedure is doe with parallel arms i the lockout positio so maximum depth cotrol ca be maitaied. The skid-steer attachmet plate should be tilted forward to support the rake o the frot gauge wheels ad toothed roller raised so teeth are just grazig the surface. Travel speed should be slow ad careful. Shuttig Dow Stop egie. Lower the lift arms ad power rake to the groud. Purge ay air i the system. Hydraulic system leak dow, hydraulic system failures, mechaical failures, or movemet of cotrol levers ca cause equipmet to drop or rotate uexpectedly. Shut off egie, set brake, remove key, remove seat belt, ad release operator restrait before leavig the skid-steer operator s seat. WARNING Debris Removal Oce the surface has bee looseed, the process of removig debris ca begi. The parallel arm lockig pis are removed ad stored i the float positio holes. This allows the rake to begi the early stages of the fial gradig process. The skid-steer attachmet plate is tilted forward util the guide wheels cotrol the depth of the toothed roller. The rake ca be agled at this time for widrowig debris or the rake ca be set straight with both edplates istalled to collect debris. Skid-steer travel speed should be icreased for this process. Fiish Gradig For this operatio, set the rake s parallel arms i the float positio ad mout both edplates i the forward positio. The rake is tilted forward util the teeth of the toothed roller are barely touchig the soil. Skid-steer speed ca be icreased for this operatio, the idea beig to collect material from the high spots ad leave it i the low areas. Spreadig Fill ad Topsoil Start with parallel arms i lock-out positio ad rake tilted o gauge wheels, sice depth of cut is ot the objective. Edplates ca be istalled ad the widrow agle set as eeded to cotrol the material movemet. Chagig Grade Grade modificatio ca be accomplished durig fiish gradig by aglig the rake to collect ad widrow the maximum amout of material toward targeted areas. (See Safety Decals sectio for locatio.) QUARTERLY MAINTENANCE Chage oil i chai case ad add 1.5 pits of 140 wt. lube. PRELIMINARY CHECK The best maiteace is regular prevetive checks, particularly whe the machie is ew. Check that all uts ad bolts are tight. CHAIN MAINTENANCE The drive chai should be ispected weekly. New chai has a tedecy to stretch, so it is ecessary to MAINTENANCE check the chai tesio to prevet floppig aroud, thus causig potetial problems. Chai tesio is preset with the extesio sprig. If the chai becomes excessively loose, it may be ecessary to remove oe lik (two pitches). If uable to reassemble, add a offset lik to legthe the chai. IMPORTANT Replacemet chai should be oly high quality origial equipmet chai for loger life. Whe beig stored for a log period or at ed of seaso, chage the oil, addig EP 140 wt. oil, ad rotate the roller several times allowig the chai to be coated with oil, ehacig chai life. Rotate the roller periodically to maitai lubricatio. I order to rotate the roller ad chai you must hook the two hydraulic hoses together. MAINTENANCE 21 HYDRAULIC MOTOR Removal Remove chai from top sprocket. The remove top sprocket by removig the hex bolt ad washers. Reassembly Apply a liberal amout of silicoe sealer to iside of flage. Attach hydraulic motor to chai case with two bolts, lock washers, ad uts. Replace collar ad sap rig over shaft. Slide top sprocket, sprocket teeth first, oto shaft. Use machie bushigs o the iside or outside or sprocket for proper aligmet. BEARINGS Highest quality bearigs are used o the power rake. Oly triple-seal bearigs are used o the roller which operates dow i the dirt. Lubricatio of bearigs will vary cosiderably with coditios. As a rule, bearigs should be uder-lubricated rather tha over-lubricated. Over-lubricatio ca cause seals to blow out. IMPORTANT Replacemet bearigs should be oly high quality origial equipmet bearigs for loger life. Istall ew complete bearig housig if eeded or just replace the bearig isert. The shafts should be straight, free of burrs, ad up to size. If shaft is wor, replace or have the shaft built up to stadard prior to completig assembly. Protective Collars The special protective collars protect bearigs from vie ad wire wrap, ad dirt buildup ext to the bearig seal. The bearig protector is sadwiched oto the shaft which rotates withi a close clearace from the outer race of the bearig. Grease comig from the bearig oozes ito the protectig collar, keepig dust ad particles from eterig the seal area, icreasig the bearig life. Left Roller Bearig Remove drive chai. The remove lower sprocket by removig cotter pi, slotted hex ut, ad washers. Remove the two bolts holdig the chai case to the frame.

24 NOTE: Have roller blocked up or supported ad slide chai case ad bearig off roller shaft. Loose bolt o the bearig tube that holds cartridge bearig i place. Remove bearig ad O-rig. To replace, reverse the procedure. Be sure all parts ad wear surfaces are thoroughly clea ad i good coditio. Be sure O-rig is also i good coditio. Whe replacig bearig, first put O-rig o bearig. Apply a coat of grease o O-rig. Slide bearig i ad apply moderate pressure o bearig so O-rig will seat ad spread slightly, thus keepig the oil i chai case from escapig through the bearig. Right Roller Bearig Remove the hex bolt ad bearig cap from outside of bearig. Loose bolt o the bearig tube that holds cartridge bearig i place. Pry bearig tube apart to free bearig assembly. NOTE: Have roller blocked up or supported. Pry bearig off of shaft ad out of bearig holder. To replace, reverse the procedure. Be sure all parts ad wear surfaces are thoroughly clea ad i good coditio. ROLLER REPLACEMENT It will be ecessary to have a liftig device or additioal help while removig ad replacig the roller. The roller weighs approximately 190 lbs. Remove upper ad lower chai case covers. Discoect the two hydraulic hoses from motor. Protect hose eds ad fittigs from beig cotamiated. Remove tesio sprig ad drive chai. The remove lower sprocket by removig cotter pi, slotted ut, ad washers. Remove the sleeve behid the sprocket you just removed. NOTE: Have the roller blocked up or supported. Remove the two bolts holdig chai case to frame ad slide chai case, with hydraulic motor attached, off of roller shaft. The roller bearig will stay i the chai case. MAINTENANCE NOTE: If chai case bearig is also beig replaced, see Left Roller Bearig above. Loose the bolt o the bearig tube of the o-drive ed, slidig roller ad bearig out of frame. Remove hex bolt, bearig cap, bearig, ad protective collar from roller. O roller to be istalled, place machie bushig ad protective collar agaist edplate of roller. Place bearig ad bearig cap o roller. Clamp i place with hex bolt ad lockwasher ito ed of roller shaft. Slide roller ad bearig ito bearig tube o o-drive ed of frame. Do ot tighte bearig tube at this time. Place spacer ad protective collar from splied ed of removed roller oto replacemet roller. Apply sealat to bearig area of shaft. Slide chai case back oto roller ad bolt to frame. Replace sleeve, sprocket, ad washers o driveshaft. Clamp solid with the 1" slotted jam ut. Check that roller clears frame o both eds. Adjust if required. Now, tighte 3/8" bolt i bearig tube o o-drive ed of frame. Reistall chai ad tesio sprig. Replace lower cover, beig careful ot to pich the O- rig. Fill the chai case with 1.5 pits of 140 wt. gear oil. Replace upper cover. Ru power rake ad watch for ay iterferece betwee roller ad frame. 22

25 DIRECTION CONTROL VALVE A three positio switch (ormally ope) is used to operate the directio cotrol valve. 12V cotrol power is supplied by the skid-steer power cord attached to the skid-steer electrical system. The switch wires are coected to the directio cotrol valve as show i Figure 9. The directio cotrol valve uses a small amout of hydraulic oil bypassed from the roller drive motor circuit. The skid-steer auxiliary hydraulic system must be coected ad egaged to provide agle directio adjustmet; the roller must be rotatig clockwise. Upackig Crate Be careful of ails i boards whe ucratig. Remove top, sides, ad eds of crate. Remove attachmet plate. Remove edplates. Remove gauge wheel assemblies. Remove parts box. Remove power rake from crate. Remove loose ails from boards ad dispose of crate accordig to local codes. SET-UP INSTRUCTIONS The power rake is shipped partially assembled. Assembly will be easier if compoets are aliged ad loosely assembled before tighteig hardware. Recommeded torque values for hardware are located o page 3. 24

27 ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE For referece, frot, back, left ad right directios are determied by sittig i the skid-steer operator s seat. Do ot permit ay bystaders withi 10 feet of power rake durig assembly. WARNING Do ot allow other people i the area whe operatig, attachig, removig, assemblig, or servicig equipmet. Avoid electrical system hazards. Never work o the electrical system uless you are qualified ad thoroughly familiar with system details ad the special hadlig requiremets. Discoect battery before workig o electrical system. Remove groud cable first. Whe recoectig battery, coect groud cable last. ASSEMBLY Raise frot of rake up so pivot frame is horizotal. Mout the left ad right edplates. Put i place with 3/4" X 2-7/8" pis with hairpi clips. These plates ca be mouted to the frot or back of power rake, depedig o rakig directio. Whe you move edplates from frot to back, you must move the left oe to the right ad the right oe to the left. Move attachmet moutig plate ito positio i frot of rake. Attach the four lik arms to the attachmet plate (lower arms first). Tighte uts after all four arms are i place. Replace the 5/8" X 4 5/8" pis i either the lockout or float positio (see Parallel Arms o page 15). 28 Istall skid-steer power cord by coectig the red wire to a positive 12 volt power source ad the white wire to groud. The power cord icludes a i-lie fuse ad sprig-loaded battery clamps. The red (positive) cable is fused ad should always be coected to the positive side of the battery to esure proper operatio of the electrical circuit. Be careful whe routig the cable that sharp edges or movig parts will ot damage it. Check the oil level i the chai case. If eeded, add EP 140 wt. gear oil. See istructios ear fill/vet plug, Figure 11.
