A information in this pubication is based on the atest product information at the time of printing. The iustrations in this manua are based on the FR700 tier. 4 TILLER SAFETY - Honda tiers are designed to give safe and dependabe service if operated according to instructions. Read and understand this Owner s Manua before operating the tier. Faiure to do so coud resut in persona injury or equipment damage. Before operation, inspect the area in which you wi be operating the tier. Remove debris and other obstaces the tier might strike or throw, as that may cause injury or damage to the tier. Inspect the tier before operating it. Repair any damage and correct any mafunction before operation. Make sure a fasteners are propery secured. If you hit an obstace whie operating the tier, stop the engine immediatey, and check for damage. Damaged equipment may increase the possibiity of injury during operation. Never operate the tier without the V-bet cover and the recoi sarter cover. These covers protect you against possibe injury from contact with rotating parts. Do not use the tier when visibiity is poor. Under conditions of poor visibiity, there is a greater risk of striking an obstace or causing injury. Chidren and pets must be kept away from the area of operation to avoid injury from fying debris and contact with the tier or tier attachments. Know how to stop the tier quicky, and understand the operation of a contros. Never permit anyone to operate the tier without proper instruction. If peope or pets suddeny acpear in front of the tier, immediatey reease the cutch ever to stop the tier to avoid possibe injury from the rotating attachments. Aways stop the engine before ceaning the tines or making adjustments. Never touch the attachments whie the engine is running; serious persona injury coud resut. Gasoine is extremey fammabe and is exposive under certain conditions. Refue in a we-ventiated area with the engine stopped. Do not smoke or aow fames or sparks in the refueing area or where gasoine is stored. Do not overfi the fue tank. After refueing, make sure the tank cap is cosed propery and securey. 3

5 When tiing on an incine, fue spiage may occur. Keep the fue tank ess than haf fu to minimize spiage. Be carefu not to spi fue when refueing. Fue vapor or spied fue may ignite. If any fue is spied, make sure the area is dry before starting the engine. Never run the engine in an encosed or confined area. Exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide gas; exposure can cause oss of consciousness and may ead to death. The muffer becomes very hot during operation and remains hot for a whie after stopping the engine. Be carefu not to touch the muffer whie it is hot. Let the engine coo before storing the tier indoors. Wear protective cothing and shoes when operating the tier. Whie operating the tier, hod the handebars firmiy; they may tend to ift during cutch engagement. Be especiay carefu when operating the tier in reverse gear. You can more easiy ose your footing when waking backward.

10 OPERATION Pre-Operation Check Aways check the foo wing before using the tier: (A) Engine oi eve. (B) Transmission oi eve. (C) Air ceaner (condition and oi eve) (D) Rotary oi eve. (E) Fue eve.

11 A. ENGINE OIL LEVEL Oi Recommendation CAUTION: Engine oi is a major factor affecting engine performance and service ife. Nondetergent and 2-stroke engine ois are not recommended. 0 Running the engine with insufficient oi can cause serious engine damage. Use Honda4-stroke, or an equivaent high detergent, premium quaity motor oi certified to meet or exceed U.S. automobie manufacturer s requirements for service cassification SE or SF (Motor ois cassified SE or SF wii show this designation on the container). SAE ow-40 is recommended for genera, a temperature use. If singe viscosity oi is used, seect the appropriate viscosity for the average temperature in your area. a. Pace the tier on a eve surface. b. Remove the oi fier cap and wipe the dipstick cean. c. Insert the dipstick into the oi fiuer neck, but do not screw it in. d. Check the oi eve shown on the dipstick. 12 B.TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL With the tier on a eve ground, remove the oi fier cap and check if oi is up to the tip of the dipstick. Add oi if necessary. (1) Oi fier cap C. AIR CLEANER (CONDITION AND OIL LEVEL) Remove the cover and inspect the eements, cean them if necessary (see p. 32). With the tier in a eve position, check the case oi eve. If necessary, add oi to the mark on the case. CAUTION: Never run the engine without the air ceaner. 13 D. ROTARY OIL LEVEL Pace the tier on eve ground and remove the oi eve check bot. The oi eve shoud be up to the ower edge of the check bot hoe. If the eve is ow, add oi unti it begins to fow out of the hoe. (1) Oi check bot 12 (2) Oi fier cap

14 E. FUEL Use automotive gasoine with a pump octane number (R ; M, of 86 or higher, or a research octane number of 91 or higher (uneaded is preferred to minimize combustion chamber deposits). Never use an oi/gasoine mixture or dirty gasoine. Avoid getting dirt, dust or water in the fue tank. After refueing, be sure to tighten the fue tank cap firmy. Gasoine is extreme& fammabe and is exposive under certain conditions. Refue in a we ventiated area with the engine stopped. Do not smoke or aow fames or sparks in the area where the engine is refueed or where gasoine is stored. Do not overfi the tank and make sure the fier cap is securey cosed after refueing. Be carefu not to spi fue when refueing. Fue vapor or spied fue may ignite. If any fue is spied, make sure the area is dry before starting the engine. i L_^^ (1) Leve mark 13

15 Gasoines Containing Acoho If you decide to use a gasoine containing acoho ( gasoho ), be sure its octane rating is at east as high as that recommended by Honda. There are two types of gasoho : that containing ethano, and that containing methano. Do not use gasoho that contains more than 10% ethano. Do not use gasoine containing methano (methy or wood acoho) that does not aso contain cosovents and corrosion inhibitors for methano. Never use gasoine containing more than 5% methano, even if it has cosovents and corrosion inhibitors. NOTE: Fue system damage or engine performance probems resuting from the use of such fues are not covered under Power Equipment Warranties. Honda cannot endores the use, of fues containing methano since evidence of their suitabiity is as yet incompete. Before purchasing fue from an unfamiiar station, try to confirm whether the fue contains acoho, and to what percentage. If you notice any undesirabe operating symptoms after using a gasoine that contains scoho; or one that you think contains acoho, switch to a gasoine that you know does not contain acoho. 14

16 Starting the Engine with the Recoi Starter c?em!e Never run the engine in an encosed or confined area. Exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide gas: exposure can cause oss of consciousness and may ead to death. The muffer becomes very hot during operation and remains hot for a whie after stopping the engine. Be carefu not to touch the muffer whie it is hot. Keep away from rotaing parts whie the engine is running. (1) Fue vave (2) ON 1. Turn the fue vave ON. 2. Turn the ignition switch to RUN. (3) Ignition switch (4) RUN 15

19 5. Make sure the cutch is disengaged and the transmission is in neutra, then pu the starter rope brisky to start the engine. CAUTION : 0 Be sure the cutch is disengaged and the transmission is in neutra to prevent sudden uncontroed movement when the engine starts, 0 Do not aow the starter grip to snap back against the engine. Return it genty to prevent damage to the starter or housing. (1) Starter 6. Aow the engine to warm up, then push in the choke rod to the open position. 18 (2) Open

21 FR700 modes with eectric starter 1. Turn the fue vave to the ON position. 2. In cod weather and when the engine is cod, pu the choke knob to the CLOSE position. 20 (1) Choke knob

22 3. Move the throtte ever about 30 degrees from the extreme right (ide position). 4. Turn the engine switch to START and hod it there unti the engine starts. NOTE: The battery wi automaticay recharge whie the tier is operated. If the tier is not operated frequenty enough to keep the battery charged, there wi be a decrease in starter motor speed. If the battery is too discharged to run the starter motor, use the recoi starter. (1) Engine switch 21

23 5. After the engine starts, et the engine switch return to ON. / (1) Engine switch 6. Let the engine warm up for severa minutes. If the choke has been pued out to the CLOSE position, return it graduay to the OPEN position as the engine warms up. (2) Choke knob 22

24 7. Move the throtte ever to the eft as desired to I increase engine speed. High atitude operation At high atitude, the standard carburetor air-fue mixture wi be excessivey rich. Performance wi decrease, and fue consumption wi increase. High atitude performance can be improved by instaing a smaer diameter main fue jet in the carburetor and readjusting the piot screw. If you aways operate the tier at atitudes higher than 6,000 feet above sea eve, have your authorized Honda Tier deaer perform these carburetor modifications. Even with suitabe carburetor jetting, engine horsepower wi decrease approximatey 3.5% for each 1,000 foot increase in atitude. The affect of atitude on horsepower wi be greater than this IY no carburetor modification is made. CAUTION: Operation of the tier at an atitude ower than the carburetor is jetted for may resut in reduced perfomnce, overheating, and serious engine damage caused by an excessivey ean air/fue mixture. 23

25 Stopping the Engine 1. Disengage the cutch (reease the ever) and shift to IV (neutra). 2. Move the throtte ever to the extreme right. 3. Turn the ignition switch OFF to stop the engine. Recoi starter type I Eectric starter type o-- 4. Turn the fue vave OFF. NOTE: To stop the engine in an emergency, disengage the cutch and turn the ignition switch OFF (4) Fue vave

26 Gear Seection The transmission has two forward speeds and one reverse speed. CAUTION: Return the throtte ever to the ide position, and disengage the cutch, before moving the shift ever. Avoid using excessive force on the shift ever. 1. Move the throtte ever to the ide position (extreme right). 2. Reease the cutch ever and move the shift ever to the desired position. Neutra- Forward 1 st - Forward 2nd- Reverse -up bottom center right of neutra fuy up from neutra and toward the right to the center from neutra and to the eft NOTE: If the shift ever wi not engage the desired gear, engage the cutch and move the tier sighty to reposition the gears.

27 Rotary Cutch Operation/Tiing To work the tier 1. Start the engine. 2. With the throtte at ide and the cutch disengaged, seect a forward gear. 3. Return the throtte to the engine start position (about 30 from ide), and engage the cutch. 4. Move the rotary cutch forward (position 1) and the tines wi turn. 5. Increase engine speed as necessary. To stop the tier 1. Move the rotary cutch to (position 2) and stop the engine. (1) ON position (3) Rotary cutch ever (2) OFF position (4) Shift ever Tire Pressure Excessive tire pressure wi reduce traction, and underinfation may resut in abnorma or acceerated tire wear. For bast performance, keep the tires infated to 1.2 kg/cm* (17.1 psi). 26 (5) Tire vave

28 Handebar Height Adjustment CAUTION: Before adjusting the handebar, pace the tier on firm eve ground to prevent the hande from faing accidentay. To adjust the handebar height, oosen the adjuster knob, seect the appropriate hoes in the hande coumn and handebar bracket, and tighten the knob. (1) Height adjuster knob Handebar Ange Adjustment The hande can be adjusted at two different anges in either direction. To adjust, oosen the ange adjuster and move the coumn. After adjustment, be sure to tighten the a,djuster securey. (2) Ange adjuster 27

29 Whee Weight Instaation The whee weights improve traction on soft or marshy ground. To insta the weights, insert two bots and secure them with the nuts suppied. Tighten the bots and nuts securey to prevent them from being turned out during operation. (1) Whee weight Tiing depth adjustment The tiing depth adjustment can be made by removing the retainer and siding the drag bar up or down as necessary. (2) Drag bar (3) Retainer 28

30 MAINTENANCE m Shut off the engine before performing any maintenance. If the engine must be run, make sure the area is we ventiated. Exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide gas; exposure can cause oss of consciousness and may ead to death. CAUTION: Use ony genuine Honda parts or their equivaent for maintenance or repair. Repacement parts which are not of equivaent quaity may damage the tier. Periodic inspection and adjustment of the Honda Tier is essentia if a high eve of performance is to be maintained. Reguar maintenance wi aso insure the ongest possibe ife of your Honda tier. 0 Performed by owner. 0 Shoud be performed by an authorized Honda deaer uness the owner has the proper toos and is mechanicay proficient. 31 Engine Oi Change NOTE: Change the oi when the engine is warm to assure rapid and compete draining. 1. Remove the oi drain bot and the fier cap. 2. Tit the engine forward sighty and aow a of the oi to drain. 3. Reinsta the drain bot and fi the crankcase to the maximum eve with the recommended oi. 4. Reinsta and tighten the fier cap. Oi capacity: FRSOO - 0.7!?(0.74 US qt) FR700 - j.2!z(1.3 US qt) CAUTION: Used motor oi may cause skin cancer if repeatedy eft in contact with the skin for proonged periods. Athough this is unikey uness you hande used oi on a daiy basis, it is sti advisabe to thoroughy wash your hands with soap and water as soon as possibe after handing used oi. NOTE: Pease dispose of used motor oi in a manner that is compatibe with the environment. We suggest you take it in a seaed container to your oca service station for recamation. 32 Transmission Oi Change NOTE: Change the oi when the engine is warm to assure rapid and compete draining Remove the oi fier cap and drain bot, and aow the oi to drain. Reinsta the drain bot and fi the transmission case up to the tip of the fier cap/dipstick with recommended oi. Reinsta the fier cap. Oi capacity: 1. Q (1.2 US qt) (1) Oi fier hoe (2) Drain bot

33 Air Ceaner Service A dirty air ceaner wi restrict air fow to the carburetor. To prevent carburetor mafunction, service the air ceaner reguary. Service more frequenty when operating the engine in extremey dusty areas. CAUTION: Never run the tier without the air ceaner. Rapid engine wear wi resut from contaminants, such as dust and dirt, being drawn through the carburetor, into the engine. 1. Remove the air ceaner cover. Remove and cean the eements in non-fammabe or high fash point sovent. Aow the eements to dry. B Never use gasoine or ow fash point sovents for ceaning the eements. A fire or exposion coud resut. 2. Saturate the eements with oi and squeeze out any excess. 3. Empty the oi from the air ceaner case and wash out any accumuated dirt with sovent. Dry the case. 4. Fi the case to the oi eve shown on page Reassembe and reinsta the air ceaner. (1) Air ceaner cover 32 (2) Air ceaner eements (3) Air ceaner case (4) Oi retainer

34 Spark Pug Service Recommended spark pug: BR4HS (NCR), W14FR-U (ND) To ensure proper engine operation the spark pug must be propery gapped and free of deposits. B The muffer becomes very hot during operation and remains hot for a whie after stopping the engine. Be carefu not to touch the muffer whie it is hot. 1. Cean any dirt from around the spark pug base. 2. Remove the pug cap and use the wrench to remove the spark pug. 3. Visuay inspect the spark pug. Discard it if the insuator is cracked or chipped. 4. Measure the pug gap with a feeer gauge. The gap shoud be mm ( in). Correct as necessary by bending the side eectrode. 5. Attach the pug washer. Thread the pug in by hand to prevent cross-threading. 6. Tighten a new spark pug /2 turn with the wrench to compress the washer. If you are reusing a pug it shoud ony take /8-1/4 turn after the pug seats. CAUTION: The spark pug must be securey tightened. An impropery tightened spark pug can become very hot and may cause engine damage. Use ony the recommended spark pugs or equivaent. 35 Throtte Cabe Adjustment Loosen the ock nut and turn the throtte cabe adjusting nut unti free pay at the throtte ever is between 5-10 mm (/4-3/8 ir,, (1J J1VI1. 116A,LVIL the ock nut securey. I (1) Lock nut (2) Throtte cabe adjusting nut (3) Free pay 34

36 Cutch Cabe Adjustment 1. Remove the V-bet cover. 2. Loosen cutch cabe the ock nut and turn the adjusting nut so that distance (A) is within the foowing imits, when the cutch is disengaged. 3. After adjustment, tighten the ock nut securey, and repace the V-bet cover. Then start the engine and check for proper cutch ever operation. NOTE: If the distance A measurement can t be set by the adjustment, the bets are probaby worn beyond use and shoud be repaced. Aways repace both bets as a set. 37 V-bet Adjustment 1. Remove the cover. 2. Engage the cutch and measure distance (A), it shoud be within the imits shown. To adjust, oosen five engine mounting bots and shift the engine forward to tighten the bets. (A FRj60 ( ;rYn). FR mm ( in) Tighten the bots securey.. 3. Measure cearances (B) and (C) to see if they fa within the foowing specifications: (B) 3-5 mm ( in) (C) 6-8 mm ( in) To adjust, oosen the bet stopper tightening bots and side the stoppers as required. 4. Tighten the bots securey and reinsta the cover. NOTE: If the cearances can t be obtained by adjustment, the bets are worn beyond use and shoud be repaced. Aways repace both bets as a set. 38 Upper Chain Adjustment 1. Remove the primary chain case cover. 2. Check chain sack midway between the sprockets; it shoud be mm ( in). To adjust tension, oosen the tensioner adjusting bots and move the tensioner up or down as necessary. (1) 8 mm adjust bot (2) Primary chain 37

39 Fuse Repacement (FR700 with eectric starter) If the fuse has bow, repace it with a SA fuse after checking the cause. If the fuse is changed without finding the cause, the new fuse may bow again. CAUTION: Do not substitute a higher capacity fuse, and do not use a wire or other materia in pace of the fuse; damage to the eectrica system may resut. NOTE: When the fuse case cover is removed, 2 fuses can be seen. One of these is the spare fuse.use it to repace the bown fuse. (1) Spare fuse 38

40 TRANSPORTING/STORAGE - To avoid severe bums or fire hazards, et the engine coo before transporting the tier or storing it indoors. When transporting the tier, turn the fue vave to the OFF position, and keep the tier eve to prevent fue spiage. Fue vapor or spied fue may ignite. Preparation For Storage (Over 30 days): Cose the IN. & EX. vaves and the contact breaker points. Pu the starter hande unti it becomes hard to pu (the piston is coming up on the compression stroke). Both vaves and the contact breaker points wi be cosed. This wi protect the vave seats and the points from corrosion. Drain the gasoine from the fue tank and carburetor: Remove the fue ine from the fue vave, turn the vave ON and drain a gasoine from the fue tank into a meta container. Remove the carburetor dram bot to drain gasoine from carburetor. Reinsta the fue ine and tighten the drain bot securey. Turn the fue vave OFF. B Gasoine is fammabe and is exposive under certain conditions. Do not smoke or aow fames or sparks near the equipment whie draining fue. Drain the engine oi and refi the engine with fresh oi. Cean the tier and coat areas of possibe rust with a ight fim of oi. Coat the cyinder was with oi. (If anticipated storage wi exceed 1 year.) Remove the spark pug and pour two or three tabespoonsfu of cean oi into the cyinder. Pu the starter hande sowy to distribute the oi over the cyinder was. Leave the piston on compression to cose the vaves and points. Reinsta the spark pug. Cover the tier and store on a eve surface in a dry, dust-free area. Once a month, recharge the battery (FR700 modes with eectric starter). 39

41 Remova From Storage Remove the spark pug and pu the starter hande severa times. Check that the spark pug is cean and propery gapped, then reinsta and tighten the pug. Check engine, transmission, and air ceaner oi eves. NOTE: Oi wi deteriorate if eft in an engine for a ong period of time. Change the engine oi if the tier has been stored for severa months. Check that the battery is fuy charged (FR700 modeswith eectric starter). Fi the fue tank. c!zm!m Gasoine is extremey fammabe and is exposive under certain conditions. Refue in a we-ventiated area with the engine stopped. Do not smoke or aow fames or sparks in the refueing area or where gasoine is stored. Do not overfi the fue tank. After refireing, make sure the tank cap is cosed propery and securey. Be carefu not to spi fue when refueing. Fue vapor or spied fue may ignite. If any fue is spied, make sure the area is dry before starting the engine. Check operation and condition of a contros. (If any parts are required, use ony genuine Honda parts or their equivaent). Turn the fue vave ON, start the engine and check operation. (Note: If the cyinder was oied for storage, the engine wi smoke for a whie after it starts. This wi cear up.) 40
