7 This training will ensure the trainee becmes a qualified M-series trailer peratr an peratr wh has the knwledge and skills t perate an M-series trailer in a safe and prfessinal manner Desired learning utcmes: Understand the safety precautins t be fllwed befre-, during-, and afterperatin f the M-series trailers Understand the purpse f the M-series trailer and its rle in the missin Purpse varius based n vehicle type (carg mvement, passenger mvement, emergency services supprt, etc.) Rle in the missin (Unit/Base/Cmmunity (during natural disasters)/air Frce) M-series trailer design. The design f an M-series trailer varies depending n the vehicle type. Refer t the manufacturer s peratr s manual fr additinal infrmatin n the specific M-series trailer being perated, and t the data plate fr safe lad capacity guidance. The M-series trailer nrmally can be identified by the fllwing characteristics: All trailers are designed t be twed by a twing vehicle withut airbrake cnnectins. A handbrake lever and cable assembly lcated n each side f the trailer activates a handbrake at each wheel. Cntrl f each handbrake is independent In sme cases, in additin t handbrake lever-activated handbrakes, the trailers are equipped with an inertia-actuated hydraulic brake system Flatbed trailers design. See Figure Used t carry munted systems ver highways and crss-cuntry All trailers have an air/hydraulic brake system which receives air pressure frm the twing vehicle thrugh inter-vehicular air hses Leveling jacks n the fur crners f the trailers prvide stability during lading and ff-lading.

8 Figure 5.1. Flatbed Trailer Design Chassis trailer design. See Figure The chassis trailer design is an pen-frame, single-axle, super single r dual wheel cnfiguratin trailer chassis. The chassis trailer is primarily used t transprt electric generatrs. It can be used n imprved and unimprved rads, and can be used with the Mine Clearing Line Charge (MICLIC). Figure 5.2. 9 Brake system. Nte: Later mdels are equipped with ABS The ABS is a self-mnitring electrnic system that wrks with the trailer's air/hydraulic brakes. When pwered by the twing vehicle, the ABS will cnstantly mnitr trailer wheel speed and cntrl trailer brake functin during wheel lck situatins. This system imprves vehicle stability and cntrl by reducing trailer wheel lck during braking. See Figure 5.3. Figure 5.3. Antilck Brake System.

Extend frm the air filters t supply service and emergency air t the emergency relay valve, air reservir and air brake chamber. Cntrls the braking system f the trailer. Based n the air pressure signals received frm the twing vehicle, it will apply r release the service brakes r it will initiate an emergency brake applicatin. The air reservir stres the system air pressure minimum that perates the brake system. Pressure t the reservir is initially supplied and then maintained thrugh the emergency supply line frm the twing vehicle thrugh the emergency valve. The air brake chamber cnverts air pressure t mechanical mtin. This mvement thrugh the hydraulic master cylinder applies the brakes. When air pressure in the air brake chamber is released, spring actin releases the brakes. The hydraulic master cylinder cnverts the mechanical mtin f the air brake chamber t hydraulic pressure which travels thrugh the hydraulic lines t the wheel cylinders. The wheel cylinders cnvert system hydraulic pressure t mechanical mtin and frce the brake lining against the brake drum. Cause frictin t slw r stp the trailer.

Tires may freeze t the grund r have flat spts if underinflated Brakeshes may freeze t brakedrum and will require preheating t prevent damage If applicable, prperly lubricate the trailer in extreme cld weather cnditins Remve all built-up snw r ice as sn as pssible after-peratin Exercise care when remving accumulatins f ice, mud, and snw frm trailer and/r water tank. Fiberglass water tanks are easily damaged by chipping r scraping. This is especially true in extreme cld Operating a water tank trailer in cld cnditins. See manufacturer s peratr s manual fr additinal guidance. Exercise care that drained water des nt becme a slip, trip r fall hazard In areas where temperatures fall belw 32 F, the manhle cver shuld be kept tightly clsed After each succeeding use, drain piping. Clse manifld valve by pushing in and then depress faucet levers t drain water frm piping If perating a stainless steel water tank, use self-draining rear faucet t dispense water when the temperature is belw freezing. Open by turning cunterclckwise. Clse by turning clckwise If the temperature is expected t fall belw 0 F, the trailer shuld be placed in a shelter if pssible Operatin in extreme heat r high humidity. See peratr s manufacturer s manual fr additinal guidance Refer t the peratr s manufacturer s manual fr prper lubricants t use in extreme heat and high humidity.

27 D nt park the trailers in sunlight fr lng perids f time. Heat and sunlight shrten tire life. If available, use canvas cvers t shield trailer Frequently inspect, clean, and lubricate inactive equipment t prevent rust and fungus accumulatin. Inspect tarpaulins fr fungus, rt, and damage Operatin in mud and snw Under n circumstances will the trailer be twed, pulled, r pushed frm the rear as damage t the trailer r equipment may result If ne r mre tires sink int mud r snw, it may be necessary t raise the mired tire and insert planking r matting beneath it Pack wheel bearings as required Clean ff all mud r snw as sn as pssible after peratin Fr mre infrmatin n ff-rad driving and safe vehicle peratin guidance, refer t AFMAN Frding Refer t twing vehicle perating instructins fr infrmatin n frding. Twing vehicle instructins are applicable t the trailer Maximum frding depth can vary based upn the type f trailer being twed Vehicle Operatin General peratin. The fllwing guidance pertains t perating all M-series trailers (with twing vehicle). Later in the sectin, additinal guidance pertaining t the flatbed M- series trailer, chassis M-series trailer, carg M-series trailer and water tank M-series trailer is prvided. This guidance is nt all-inclusive. Trainer and trainee shuld refer t the manufacturer s peratr s manual, Pintle Hk Lessn Plan, Hazardus Material Lessn Plan and AFMAN fr cmprehensive guidance applicable t the specific M-series trailer type/mdel being used Twing prcedures When trailer is cupled, always start and stp twing vehicle slwly and gradually. D this whether r nt trailer is laded Sudden and fast acceleratin will cause hydraulic brakes t apply.

28 When driving twing vehicle and trailer, verall length f unit must be kept in mind when turning and passing ther vehicles. Because unit is hinged in the middle, turning and backing are als affected. Heavier paylads will increase stpping distance and decrease ff-rad maneuverability Turning When turning crners, allw fr the fact that the trailer wheels turn inside the turning radius f the twing vehicle T make a right turn at an intersectin, drive twing vehicle partway int the intersectin, then cut sharply t the right. This will allw fr the turning radius f trailer, and keep trailer wheels ff the curb Backing Always back the twing vehicle slwly and gradually Always use a sptter. The peratr must maintain visual cntact with the sptter at all times. If visual cntact is lst, the peratr will immediately stp the vehicle. See AFMAN fr additinal guidance n standard AF sptter hand signals and additinal sptter safety guidance Adjust all twing vehicle rearview mirrrs befre backing, as needed When backing, rear f trailer will mve in ppsite directin in which twing vehicle is turned. When twing vehicle is turned t the right, rear f trailer will g left. When twing vehicle has turned and backing in a straight line is required, turn the twing vehicle in directin trailer is mving. This will slwly bring twing vehicle and trailer int a straight line Stpping Always stp twing vehicle by applying brakes gradually and smthly.
