3 Car Clearance Prcedures ( ) - Fr Trainers (Whle Clearance) Befre starting any driving clearance check with the supervisr, yu need t get their permissin t start any clearance prcess (driving r equipment). 4 Equipment Clearance 2 sessins - 1 hur each sessin Supervisrs will give the permissin t start any clearance prcess (driving r equipment) Sessin 1 (1 hur) 1. Yu will need t reserve a van and have a wheelchair fr this clearance. 2. Take staff t the Van and shw them safety features. - If emergency brake is engaged yu will nt be able t put the van int drive. (Large White Chair Van s Only) - Back up sensr and camera (Nte - with the bench seat dwn it is difficult t see ut the back) (Large White Chair Van s Only) - Pwer lcks, windws and side mirrrs. 3. G ver use f the lift stressing each safety feature f the lift. - Fllw 2013 CC Equipment Infrmatin sheet fr this part f the training 4. Lading a student n the lift - Facing ut is preferred as it des nt put as much stress n the lift. - Yu can lad the student nt the lift facing int the van, but please be aware f student flipping backward ff the lift. It als puts mre wear and tear n the lift. 5. G ver the steps t take if the lift is nt wrking. - Check the switch n the cntrl. Staff will need t demnstrate that they can use the lift (manual t), secure a wheelchair in the van and stw/deply the back seats withut any cues frm the trainer. 3. If cleared then send the paper wrk (Car Clearance level, equipment sectin) t the apprpriate peple lcated n the bttm f the page.

5 USE OF PERKINS SCHOOL CARS Overview f Prcedures (Trainer Guide) Trainer Nte: g ver each bullet with staff. Stress each trainer nte. Safe peratin f the vehicle is the driver s primary respnsibility. Trainer Nte: safety is ur tp PRIORTY. All drivers f Perkins vehicles must be "cleared" by an apprved Car Clearance Trainer. In additin, special clearance is needed t perate equipment in the Chair Cars. The schl has a master car schedule and prgrams have individual schedules. Be sure that the car yu are using is assigned t yu. Trainer Nte: G ver master schedule then g ver hw yur prgram assigns the vehicles. Als check Ask Hwe fr maintenance calendar t make sure yur vehicle available. All use f Perkins Schl cars shuld be apprved by yur supervisr r department head (r A.E.C. in case f emergency) Schl cars may nt be used fr persnal use. Als, persnal cars may nt be used t transprt students. Trainer Nte: Except in an extreme emergency Such as evacuating the campus. Perkins staff are nt allwed t drive students in a persnal vehicle while n duty. When ff-duty, Perkins staff are prhibited frm driving students t and frm campus in a persnal vehicle unless there is a signed permissin slip n file. Trainer nte: Frm is n Ask Hwe called Transprtatin frm fr parents Seat belts are t be used by all ccupants at all times. It is the driver s respnsibility t make sure this ccurs. If a staff r student has difficulty wearing a seatbelt prperly, they are nt t be transprted until an apprved plan is in place. Using a seat belt prperly includes using bth the waist belt and shulder belt when available. Trainer nte: Sme students may use seat belt lcking devices. This will be decided by yur supervisr. If a staff is nt in the driver s seat, the car must be ff and the keys may nt be in the ignitin. Trainer Nte: It des nt need t be a cleared staff that sits in the frnt seat. G ver warming up a car in the winter r cling it dwn in the summer. Anther example culd be student lcking the drs while staff is utside cleaning the car ff. The car registratin and a credit card are kept in the glve cmpartment f each car. (The credit card is an Exxn/Mbil card. This ne card will wrk fr bth f these statins.) When using credit cards, be sure t get a cpy f the charge slip, and check that the figure n the slip agrees with the ne at the pump. Speed limit n campus is 15 miles per hur. Since there are students wh are blind, deafblind, and multi-handicapped traveling independently n campus, extreme cautin shuld be taken while driving n the campus. Trainer Nte: The Students are learning t crss the rad independently. Example: We culd talk abut the student s technique n hw t crss the rad (student waiving yu n) All schl cars have handicapped plates. This allws vehicles transprting handicapped peple t park in spaces psted with HP-DV Parking Only signs as well as at cin meters withut paying fees. If there is nt a handicapped persn in the vehicle, d nt use the abve allwance.

6 Please reprt all car prblems (e.g. brken seatbelt r dr lck, missing equipment r supplies) t yur supervisr. Supervisrs will reprt all car prblems n ur electrnic reprting system Schldude. If staff gets in an accident r receives a ticket (speeding, parking, mving vilatin) while driving a Perkins vehicle, it must be reprted t the supervisr immediately. If staff gets in an accident while driving a Perkins vehicle. There is an Accident Kit in every Perkins vehicle. The Accident kit will walk yu thrugh the steps and infrmatin that is needed. There is als a Massachusetts Vehicle crash peratrs reprt lcated n the Ask Hwe. Trainer Nte: The accident kit is a wrksheet s that yu can fill ut the Massachusetts vehicle peratr reprt when yu return t the schl. The Massachusetts vehicle peratr reprt needs t be sent t Jim Earl ASAP. If staff gets in an accident, receives a ticket (speeding, mving vilatin), r receives a DUI (Driving under the Influence r driving while intxicated) while nt driving a Perkins vehicle, it must be reprted t the supervisr Trainer Nte: we will have t check yu license again t make sure ur insurance will still cver yu. The regulatins state that when mre than 7 students are being transprted, an attendant ther than the driver is required. There are triangular reflectrs, chck blcks, and a first aid kit lcated in each car. Trainer Nte: Infrm staff that we d nt expect them t change a tire r jump start ne f the Perkins vehicles. Please call Perfectin Twing. Als pint ut the lcatin f these devices befre yu g ut n the drive. All schl cars have Fast Lane transpnders. This allws staff t drive thrugh the Fast Lane entrance at a tllbth withut stpping t pay a tll. The maximum speed while ging thrugh a Fast Lane gate is 15 miles per hur. Please use cautin while ging thrugh the tllbth since the vehicle in frnt f yu may stp r there may be a wrker passing in frnt f the gate frm time t time. Studies have shwn that drivers wh are distracted while driving have an increased risk f an accident. Therefre, there shuld be n reading (maps, directins), writing, use f cell phnes, r ther similar distractins while driving. If mre than ne car is ging t the same destinatin, each driver shuld have directins and be cmfrtable with hw t get t the destinatin. Drivers d nt fllw the car in frnt f them. This can lead t an unsafe situatin where a driver may speed r rush thrugh a light t keep up with the lead vehicle. Perkins Vans have a 9 ft clearance and can g n Strrw Drive and Memrial Drive. Perkins large white Vans are nt allwed t use cvered garages. Exceptin is Museum f Science. Please call and make arrangements befre yu g t the museum f science. Trainer Nte: Make a plan and make sure yu have parking at yur destinatin.

7 Use f a GPS device Use f a GPS device (Glbal Psitining System) is allwed in a Perkins vehicle with the fllwing restrictins: A passenger may prgram a GPS r use a cell phne GSP during the drive as lng as it des nt interfere with safe driving. The driver may nt prgram the GPS r therwise manipulate the device while driving. The GPS r Cell Phne GPS shuld be munted n the windshield r dashbard s the driver des nt have t lk away frm the rad t see the device. It shuld nt bstruct the view f the driver fr safe driving. If GPS r Cell Phne GPS is NOT munted then staff is nly allwed t use the audible and NOT the visual instructins. The driver shuld be familiar with the GPS prir t starting the drive. If an emplyee chses t use a persnal GPS it will nt be the respnsibility f Perkins if the device is lst, stlen, r damaged When returning the car, please bserve the fllwing: It is staff respnsibility t make sure that any trash/debris in the car is cleaned up befre returning the car t the parking area. Trainer Nte: Fr the next staff member/student (PICA and student thrwing trash can be examples why). Please clean ut the debris even if it was nt yurs. All cars shuld be lcked and windws clsed t deter vandalism. Trainer Nte: please keep credit cards ut f site, it is always a gd idea fr staff t hide the GPS munt, while nt in use. This will help deter thers frm breaking int ur vehicles. All cars shuld be parked in assigned spaces, except fr lading and unlading. They must be returned t the assigned spaces after use. Trainer Nte: This is fr the next Persn using the car. They will be expecting it t be in its assigned spt. Upn return please make sure there is at least a ½ tank f gas fr the next persn.
