1 Driving a Perkins Vehicle - Safety is a Pririty When driving a Perkins vehicle, safety must always be a pririty. The fllwing safety tips shuld be cnsidered, especially in adverse rad cnditins. Thank yu fr yur high attentin t safety. 1. While driving, keep distractins t a minimum. The prime functin f the driver is an undivided attentin t the task f driving. Watching students, use f a phne, reading a map, etc. shuld nt be dne by the driver. 2. During inclement weather, vehicles may be grunded. If nt sure if vehicles are grunded, check with yur supervisr prir t yur drive. 3. Always use turn signals when making turns r changing lanes. 4. D nt impede the flw f traffic. It is best t stay in the right hand lane t allw thers t pass if yu are nt passing cars. 5. With snw r ice, assure gd visibility frm the start. Clear all windws - frnt, side and back as well as headlights. 6. At night, assure headlights are clean. This can be dne at the beginning f a trip r during the trip if needed. Rad splatter can cut headlight efficiency in half. 7. In heavy snw, fg r sleet - use lw beams day r night. This alerts ther drivers t yur presence and lw beams give less glare and increased visibility. 8. During winter driving, anticipate stps since stpping is much slwer in snw. 9. D nt slam n brakes if pssible - skids may ccur. It is better t exert slw, even pressure n the brakes. 10. During adverse cnditins ice usually frms first n bridges. Exercise extreme cautin during icy cnditins. 11. Hydrplaning: During rain strms, tires can ride n the water n the surface f the rad as ppsed t n the rad itself. This causes a substantial lss in tractin. Preventin: Slwer speed. 12. During the first 30 minutes f light rain, il and dust n the rad frm a very slick substance causing increased pssibility f skidding. 13. Three Secnd Rule: When the vehicle directly ahead f yu passes a nn-mving landmark (e.g.: a sign, a tree), cunt t three--"ne ne-thusand, tw nethusand, three ne-thusand". If yu pass the landmark befre yu finish cunting, yu are t clse. Pr rad cnditins due t bad weather may require cunting t fur secnds. Therefre, increase distance between yur car and the car in frnt f yu n snw-cvered rads.

3 USE OF PERKINS SCHOOL CARS Overview f Prcedures Safe peratin f the vehicle is the driver s primary respnsibility. All drivers f Perkins vehicles must be "cleared" by an apprved Car Clearance Trainer. In additin, special clearance is needed t perate equipment in the Chair Cars. The schl has a master car schedule and prgrams have individual schedules. Be sure that the car yu are using is assigned t yu. All use f Perkins Schl cars shuld be apprved by yur supervisr r department head (r A.E.C. in case f emergency) Schl cars may nt be used fr persnal use. Perkins staff are nt allwed t drive students in a persnal vehicle while n duty. When ff-duty, Perkins staff are prhibited frm driving students t and frm campus in a persnal vehicle unless there is a signed permissin slip n file. Seat belts are t be used by all ccupants at all times. It is the driver s respnsibility t make sure this ccurs. If a staff r student has difficulty wearing a seatbelt prperly, they are nt t be transprted until an apprved plan is in place. Using a seat belt prperly includes using bth the waist belt and shulder belt when available. If a staff is nt in the driver s seat, the car must be ff and the keys may nt be in the ignitin. The car registratin and a credit card are kept in the glve cmpartment f each car. (The credit card is an Exxn/Mbil card. This ne card will wrk fr bth f these statins.) When using credit cards, be sure t get a cpy f the charge slip, and check that the figure n the slip agrees with the ne at the pump. Speed limit n campus is 15 miles per hur. Since there are students wh are blind, deaf blind, and multi-handicapped traveling independently n campus, extreme cautin shuld be taken while driving n the campus. All schl cars have handicapped plates. This allws vehicles transprting handicapped peple t park in spaces psted with HP-DV Parking Only signs as well as at cin meters withut paying fees. If there is nt a handicapped persn in the vehicle, d nt use the abve allwance. Please reprt all car prblems (e.g. brken seatbelt r dr lck, missing equipment r supplies) t yur supervisr. Supervisrs will reprt all car prblems n ur electrnic reprting system Schldude. If staff gets in an accident r receives a ticket (speeding, parking, mving vilatin) while driving a Perkins vehicle, it must be reprted t the supervisr immediately. If staff gets in an accident while driving a Perkins vehicle. There is an Accident Kit in every Perkins vehicle. The Accident kit will walk yu thrugh the steps and infrmatin that is needed. There is als a Massachusetts Vehicle crash peratrs reprt lcated n the Perkins intranet.

4 USE OF PERKINS SCHOOL CARS Overview f Prcedures If staff gets in an accident, receives a ticket (speeding, mving vilatin), r receives a DUI (Driving under the Influence r driving while intxicated) while nt driving a Perkins vehicle, it must be reprted t the supervisr The regulatins state that when mre than 7 students are being transprted, an attendant ther than the driver is required. There are triangular reflectrs, chck blcks, and a first aid kit lcated in each car. All schl cars have Fast Lane transpnders. This allws staff t drive thrugh the Fast Lane entrance at a tllbth withut stpping t pay a tll. The maximum speed while ging thrugh a Fast Lane gate is 15 miles per hur. Please use cautin while ging thrugh the tllbth since the vehicle in frnt f yu may stp r there may be a wrker passing in frnt f the gate frm time t time. (Fast Lane transpnders can be used anywhere E-Z Pass is accepted in New Yrk, New Jersey, Delaware, and West Virginia.) Studies have shwn that drivers wh are distracted while driving have an increased risk f an accident. Therefre, there shuld be n reading (maps, directins), writing, use f cell phnes, r ther similar distractins while driving. If mre than ne car is ging t the same destinatin, each driver shuld have directins and be cmfrtable with hw t get t the destinatin. Drivers d nt fllw the car in frnt f them. This can lead t an unsafe situatin where a driver may speed r rush thrugh a light t keep up with the lead vehicle. Perkins Vans have a 9 ft clearance and can g n Strrw Drive and Memrial Drive. Perkins Vans are nt allwed t use cvered garages. Exceptin is Museum f Science. Please call and make arrangements befre yu g t the museum f science. Use f a GPS device Use f a GPS device (Glbal Psitining System) is allwed in a Perkins vehicle with the fllwing restrictins: A passenger may prgram a GPS r use a cell phne GSP during the drive as lng as it des nt interfere with safe driving. The driver may nt prgram the GPS r therwise manipulate the device while driving. The GPS r Cell Phne GPS shuld be munted n the windshield r dashbard s the driver des nt have t lk away frm the rad t see the device. It shuld nt bstruct the view f the driver fr safe driving. If GPS r Cell Phne GPS is NOT munted then staff is nly allwed t use the audible and NOT the visual instructins. The driver shuld be familiar with the GPS prir t starting the drive. If an emplyee chses t use a persnal GPS it will nt be the respnsibility f Perkins if the device is lst, stlen, r damaged

5 USE OF PERKINS SCHOOL CARS Overview f Prcedures When returning the car, please bserve the fllwing: It is staff respnsibility t make sure that any trash/debris in the car is cleaned up befre returning the car t the parking area. All cars shuld be lcked and windws clsed t deter vandalism. All cars shuld be parked in assigned spaces, except fr lading and unlading. They must be returned t the assigned spaces after use. Upn return please make sure there is at least a ½ tank f gas fr the next persn.

This feature "lcks ut" the rear and passenger dr windws fr this car. Nte: In general, use the abve tw lckut features fr safety reasns. Otherwise, d nt activate the lckut features if nt needed. The Accrd seats five ttal passengers. The utside rear view mirrrs are adjusted electrnically frm the driver's side dr. Turn the cntrl t the left fr the driver's dr r t the right fr the passenger dr. The Odyssey seats seven ttal ccupants, six plus the driver. Rear drs have childprf lckuts levers that allw staff t keep the drs lcked at all times frm the inside f the car. This means that the student cannt pen the dr frm the inside, althugh the staff can pen the dr frm the utside. The use f the electric windws can be disabled frm the cntrls n the driver s dr by pushing the buttn with the windw icn that has an X thrugh it. This feature "lcks ut" the rear and passenger dr windws fr this car. Nte: In general, use the abve lckut feature fr safety reasns. Otherwise, d nt activate the lckut features if nt needed. If the windws are dwn in the sliding back drs, they will nt slide all the way back. This is a safety feature t prevent an arm frm being caught when the dr is being pened. The Fuel Fill Dr Release fr access t the fuel tank is lcated n the flr t the left f the driver. If the fuel fill dr (lcated n the driver s side) is pen, the sliding back dr n this side will nt pen. There is a pump lever fr the driver s seat which will raise r lwer the seat. The lever is lcated n the lwer left part f the driver s seat. T raise the seat, pump up. T lwer the seat, pump dwn. T adjust the angle f the backrest n the secnd rw f seats, lift the lever n the upper side f the backrest and adjust. Lifting this lever and pulling the backrest all the way frward will als mve the seat frward t allw access t the third rw. The utside rear view mirrrs are adjusted electrnically frm the driver's side dr. Select "L" fr the driver's dr r "R" fr the passenger dr. The height f the steering wheel can be adjusted using the lever under the steering clumn. The parking brake is perated by a ft pedal. Windshield Wipers are lcated n the lever t the right f the steering clumn. This lever als perates the windshield wipers fr the rear windw. The High/Lw beam is adjusted by mving the directinal lever t the left f the steering clumn frward r back. There are tw temperature adjustment cntrls. The cntrls fr the frnt are lcated n the dashbard. Cntrls fr the back are lcated n the ceiling and behind the driver. T allw peple in back t adjust temperature independently using the separate rear cntrls, mve the Rear Cntrller dial n the dash t ON.

23 HONDA ODYSSEY MINI-VAN The seatbelt fr the middle persn in the third rw is in a retractable unit n the ceiling. The anchr latch must be put int the anchr buckle n the seat t the right f the persn in the middle seat. The regular Latch Plate fits int the buckle as with any seatbelt. T return the seatbelts t the retractable ceiling unit, insert the latch plate int the slt n the side f the anchr buckle and release. (Pages 17 & 18 in the Owners Manual have mre infrmatin.) The height f the frnt driver and passenger shulder belts are adjustable. T adjust the angle f the backrest n the third rw f seats, pull the strap cming ut f the backrest and adjust. Switches n the driver and passenger dr marked with a key icn will lck and unlck all drs. Please remve keys when car is ff s that keys and peple are nt lcked in by this switch. A First Aid Kit, Chck Blcks, and Triangular Reflectrs are lcated in the strage area in the flr behind the driver. The hd release is lcated n the left f the driver, belw and t the side f the Fuel Fill Dr Release. T set the interir lights s they will nt cme n when the drs are pen, press the Dr buttn n the dash (this buttn has an icn f a light) t the ff psitin. There are tw glve bxes, ne abve the ther. There is a buttn n the dash t the left f the driver that is labeled VSA. This means Vehicle Stability Assist, which is a functin that helps maintain stability during crnering. Pushing the VSA buttn defeats this functin. Generally, there is n need t press this buttn. The Hazard Warning Buttn fr the fur way flashers is lcated n the dash between the center air vents. 24 PASSENGER VAN Belw are sme features t be familiar with abut the Vans. These Vans seat eight ttal passengers. The utside rear view mirrrs are adjusted manually. The parking brake is engaged by a ft pedal. Windshield Wipers are lcated n the directinal lever t the left f the steering clumn. This lever als cntrls High/Lw beams fr lights. The height f the frnt driver and passenger shulder belts are adjustable. There are separate fans and cntrls fr the frnt and back f the van. A First Aid Kit, Chck Blcks, Triangular Reflectrs, and Jack are lcated in the strage area ver the driver. When in drive, the Vans are autmatically in Overdrive. This functin is used fr nrmal driving and will deliver better fuel ecnmy. Generally, just leave the car in Overdrive. T verride this functin, press the verdrive buttn at the end f the gearshift lever. (This might be dne fr hilly rads r inclement weather t prevent dwnshifting.) The utlet marked "Pwer Pint" is used t plug in accessries. All windws have manual cntrls. Clearance under bridges r verhang: 8 1/2 feet

26 2013 FORD CHAIR VAN GERNRAL INFORMATION General Infrmatin The Chair Cars seat eight ttal ambulatry passengers and 1 wheelchair The Chair Cars transprt a maximum f tw wheelchairs depending n the size f the wheelchairs. Seats fr ambulatry passengers may be lst depending n the situatin including the size f the wheelchairs and where they are placed in the vehicle. Clearance under bridges r verhang: Nine feet Bth f the utside rear view mirrrs are adjusted electrnically by the knb n the driver side dr. The drs lck and unlck with the fb as well as with buttns n specific drs. When unlcking drs with the fb, ne press f the buttn will unlck driver s dr and the driving lights will blink. Tw presses f the buttn will unlck all drs. When lcking drs, ne press f the buttn will lck all drs. Tw presses f the buttn will lck all drs and hrn will beep t ntify drs are lcked. There are tw batteries in this vehicle. The lights in the cab are LED lights that require much less pwer than regular lights. These tw upgrades shuld help prevent drain n the battery. Parking break must be disengaged and back dr clsed befre the van can be put int gear. Parking break is engaged by pressing n it with yur ft. It is disengaged by pulling the lever right abve it. This van is equipped with a vide camera and back up sensrs t ensure safety while in reverse. These features will autmatically cme n as yu put the van int reverse. The vide display will cme n in yur rear view mirrr. and The sensr display is attached t the rear view mirrr and gives yu are read ut in inches. While backing and as yu get clse t smething the sensrs will start t beep faster. A First Aid Kit, Chck Blcks, and Triangular Reflectrs are lcated in the strage area ver the driver. Raising/Lwering - (Bench Seats)-Key Pints T raise seat s wheelchair can be used: The frnt bench seat must be raised first. Pull up n the red lever n the side f the seat. Try t have the angle f the straps arund 45 degrees and within angles shwn in the illustratin. Slide Tie Dwn base nt flr Anchrages. Assure they are lcked int place. The frnt tw straps shuld be 2-4 inches utside the frnt wheels f the wheelchair. The back tw straps shuld be just inside the back wheels f the wheelchair. When finished securing the wheelchair, assure that all straps are tight. Securing Seat/Shulder Belts-Key Pints The Lap and Shulder belts that are designed fr use with the Chair Car shuld be used with all wheelchairs. Secure the Lap Belts with the buckle (female end) t the attachment n the right (passenger side) back Tie Dwns (near the flr Anchrages). Assure the buckle is as clse t the lwer right hip f the student as pssible. Secure the Lap Belts with the Silver Metal Clip that riginates frm the mvable attachment strip n the wheelchair driver s side wall t the attachment n the left (passenger side) back Tie Dwns (near the flr Anchrages). Then attach the silver metal clip t the buckle f the lap belt. The shulder belt shuld cme ver the left shulder f the student. If it des nt, either mve the attachment n the wall further back r repsitin the wheelchair s that it is clser t the left (driver s side) wall.

Only staff cleared n Mini-Van equipment shuld lad wheelchairs/use tie dwns and secure wheelchair safety belts. The Mini Van Chair Car seats the fllwing (includes the driver): a. N Wheelchairs - 4 ambulatry b. 1 wheelchair in frnt psitin 2 Ambulatry (if chair size fits in frnt) c. 1 wheelchair in middle psitin 2 Ambulatry d. 1 wheelchair in back psitin 4 Ambulatry (if chair size fits in back) If the battery ges dead that is in the car r in the Key Fb transmitter, there is an emergency key in the Key Fb fr lcking/unlcking the drs. If the Key fb is in the ignitin when the battery dies, it will becme lcked in the ignitin. D nt attempt t remve Key Fb until the battery is charged r the car is jump started. The use f the electric windws can be disabled frm the cntrls n the driver s dr by pushing the buttn with the windw icn that has an X thrugh it. This feature "lcks ut" the rear and passenger dr windws fr this car. Nte: In general, use the abve lckut feature fr safety reasns. Otherwise, d nt activate the lckut features if nt needed. The Fuel Fill Dr fr access t the fuel tank is lcated n the driver s side. T adjust the angle f the backrest n the secnd rw f seats, pull the strap n the back f the chair. The utside rear view mirrrs are adjusted electrnically frm the driver's side dr. Select "L" fr the driver's dr r "R" fr the passenger dr. The height f the steering wheel can be adjusted using the lever under the steering clumn. The parking brake is perated by a ft pedal. Windshield Wipers are lcated n the lever t the left f the steering clumn. This lever als perates the windshield wipers fr the rear windw.
