Sectin 5 KNOWLEDGE LECTURE AND EVALUATION 5.1. Knwledge Overview (Lecture) A SUSV is a tracked vehicle designed fr use as an all-terrain transprt vehicle. The vehicle has tw track driven cars. Bth cars are made f reinfrced fiberglass plastic and are cupled by an articulated steering assembly. SUSVs vary in size, shape and specificatins, determined by make and mdel; it is imperative t knw the specificatins f the SUSV being perated befre use. Specificatin infrmatin shuld be used tgether t determine the prper use and necessary precautins t take prir t perating the SUSV. This infrmatin is best fund in the apprpriate TO r Manufacturer s Operatr s Manual fr the specific SUSV being perated Track driven cars. The tw track driven cars f the vehicle are steered by hydraulic cylinders in the steering assembly. The frnt car cntains the engine and transmissin, transfer case, breaking system and bth steering systems. Bth cars have its wn differentials. The differentials transmit pwer t the track drive sprckets Specificatins vary fr each mdel. Imprtant specificatins include: Vehicle weight (frnt/rear car), maximum paylad (frnt/rear car), maximum twed paylad (level grund/grade r side slpe), fuel (type/capacity), land perfrmance (maximum speed/grade, climb and descent/side slpe/steering unit), etc. Nte: The lad requires the carg t be evenly distributed thrughut the strage area at the lwest pssible pint.

8 Steering unit. The steering unit cnnects bth cars and permits sme relative mvement between cars. Steering unit specificatins include: Maximum vertical twist. The amunt f vertical twist that the system can take withut causing damage t the equipment. (Ex. Carg Carrier M973A1 maximum vertical twist = 40 ) Maximum mvement between the up and dwn level between bth cars withut lsing track cntact with the rund Steepest crssable ditch that can be crssed withut lsing track cntact with the grund. The ditch must be entered/exited head-n and n level grund Climb rate Turning radius SUSV majr cmpnents.

Directin Signal Lever Operates turn signal, high and lw headlamp beams, hrn, high beam, headlamp signaling, and windshield wipers and washer. See Attachment 3 fr the Seven-Step Inspectin Methd Vehicle Safety and Equipment Hazards and Human Factrs: Backing. Always use a sptter when backing. Sptter must be trained and use hand signals IAW AFMAN

Always wear hearing prtectin while the engine is running Carbn mnxide. Carbn mnxide is a clrless, drless, pisnus gas. Expsure t air cntaining carbn mnxide prduces symptms including: headache, dizziness, lss f muscular cntrl, drwsiness and cma. Expsure can result in permanent brain damage r death. Observe the fllwing guidance t prevent expsure frm engine exhaust fumes: D nt perate heater r engine f vehicle in an enclsed area unless adequately ventilated D nt idle engine fr lng perids f time withut maintaining adequate ventilatin in the persnal cmpartment D nt drive the vehicle with inspectin plates, cver plates r access drs remved Be alert at all times during vehicle peratin fr exhaust drs and expsure Swingfire heater. A blcked cling system may cause damage t water hses. If hses begin t vibrate severely, r appear as if they might cme lse, stp heating peratin and check fr blcked cling system. Damage t equipment r persnnel injury culd ccur.

20 Tw cables. Wear heavy leather wrk glves when handling cables. Frayed r brken wires can injure bear hands. The peratr shuld never let a mving cable slide thrugh his/her hands (even when wearing glves). Ensure all persnnel utside f the vehicle are at least a distance equal t the length f the cable away frm the twing and the disabled vehicle befre starting t tw the vehicle Backing. Always use a sptter when backing. The peratr must keep the sptter in visual cntact at all times. If the peratr lses visual cntact, the peratr must immediately stp the vehicle. Fr additinal guidance n sptting and Air Frce standard sptting hand signals, refer t AFMAN Paylad capacity. D nt exceed the vehicle s paylad capacity fund n the vehicle data plate r in the manufacturer s peratr s manual Always perate the vehicle at the slwest speed pssible while cmpleting any task. Lcal and installatin psted speed limits and written guidance apply Climb rate. D nt exceed the maximum climb rate fr the SUSV being perated. Refer t the vehicle s data plate r manufacturer s peratr s manual fr the maximum climb rate FOD Vehicle peratrs will remve FOD frm tracks/tires. Befre entering the airfield, a physical check fr lse/unsecured bjects and an inspectin f the tire treads/tracks fr FOD will be accmplished, with the exceptin f emergency vehicles respnding t actual situatins Any vehicle which has been driven n an unpaved surface will have a tire FOD inspectin accmplished prir t re-entering the airfield area. Vehicles that frequent the flight line will be equipped with a FOD picker and a cvered FOD cntainer FOD picker will be etched with the vehicle number painted n red r range (r have a red streamer attached) FOD picker will be anntated n vehicle inspectin frm FOD cntainers will be identified with the letters "FOD" and will be emptied daily FOD checks are perfrmed s that aircraft damage can be kept at a minimum.

21 5.6. Vehicle Operatin Refer t the Operatr s Manufacturer s Manual fr detailed, vehicle-specific peratin f the SUSV. Additinally, refer t AFMAN and lcal plicies and prcedures fr further laws and regulatins pertaining t the peratin and use f the SUSV Start engine Befre starting the vehicle, a preventative maintenance check will be perfrmed Ensure transmissin lever is set t neutral (N) psitin Turn ff all accessry switches and electrical cmpnents Turn key in IGNITION switch t ON psitin. Nte: Ensure all warning indicatrs are lit. If any indicatr fails t light, d nt start the engine Depress the acceleratr pedal; turn the key t the START psitin, release the key and acceleratr pedal when the engine starts. Nte: D nt hld the key in the START psitin mre than 30 secnds. Damage t the mtr may result. IF the engine fails t start, wait 15 secnds befre engaging starter again Ensure the engine il pressure gauge reads nrmal D nt run engine abve 1,200 revlutins per minute (RPM) after starting. Wait 5 minutes with engine at idle ( RPM) Befre driving the vehicle, allw 10 minutes after starting the vehicle fr the steering system cmpnents t warm up Transfer case Vehicle must be stpped with transmissin in neutral befre transfer case is shifted int high r lw range D nt place transmissin in gear with the engine running and the transfer case in neutral When changing transfer ranges t high r lw range gearshift lever must be mved in ne mtin quickly thrugh neutral. If transfer shift cannt be made and gearshift lever remains in neutral, shut dwn engine, then mve gearshift lever in high r lw psitin.

22 Driving in frward r reverse Always use a sptter when driving in reverse/backing. The peratr will have visual cntact with the sptter at all times. If visual cntact is lst, the peratr will immediately stp the vehicle. See AFMAN fr additinal guidance n standard AF sptter hand signals and safety prcedures. CAUTION: D nt lean ut f the frnt dr sliding windw r the side hatch f the rear car while driving in frward r reverse The carrier must be stpped with the transmissin in neutral prir t shifting the transfer t high r lw range. D nt place the transmissin in gear with the engine running and transfer in neutral. This will result in damage t the transfer Autmatic transmissin has fur frward speeds and ne reverse speed. The gearshift lever latch must be lifted t change between reverse, neutral and drive psitins. The gearshift lever can be mved freely thrugh drive, 3, and 2 psitins. The gearshift lever latch must be lifted t mve the shift lever frm 2 t 1 psitin Place the transfer shift lever in high range psitin Start the engine Depress service brake pedal. Nte: DO nt shift frm drive t neutral when the vehicle is mving faster than 9 mph. This will cause damage t the transmissin Place gearshift lever in drive (D) psitin. If parking brake indicatr remains lit after the parking brake release is pulled, set the parking brake, shutdwn the engine Release parking brake Ensure that the parking brake light ges ut Gear shifting. The autmatic transmissin shifting is cntrlled by the acceleratr pedal. Depressing the pedal slightly prvides earlier shifting, and shifting is delayed when the pedal is depressed mre fully If n a dwnhill grade, shift the transmissin t a lwer gear D nt shift frm drive (D) t neutral when the vehicle is mving faster than 9 mph.

23 Parking and engine shutdwn Run the engine at a reduced speed in neutral fr 3-5 minutes befre shutting the engine dwn. This will reduce the turbcharger speed and allw the turbcharger and engine t cl dwn Turn the key t the STOP psitin Set the brake Install the grill cvers Plug the vehicle in if the lcal temperature drps belw Operate nrmal driving lights Turn ignitin switch t ON psitin Press stp knb and turn switch t psitin 1 (nrmal lights) Push light switch Winch peratin Release latch, remve pin, and pull winch frm its stwage bracket. Install n frnt f vehicle. Ensure winch-munting pin is installed Plug ne end f pwer cable int vehicle slave receptacle at rear f driver s seat and ne end int the pwer receptacle n the winch Cnnect the remte cntrl cable t winch cntrl receptacle, tp right f winch Engine must be running fr the winch t perate Pull up drum lck, turn it 1/4 turn t unlck the winch drum Pull ut the needed length f the cable by hand.
